Great wod. Not pulling any punches with low skill movements. There was a lot of speculation at our box that the first wod would be Cindy or Angie or something widely accessible without a large skill component. Apparently not!

What a great couplet of two high skill movements.

It is interesting to see how the wods options will be working within the constraints of what can be submitted via video. E.g. Running wods would be logically impossible.

Thanks for the great video explaining the standards. It is very clear.

Michael Kloster
P.S. Thanks for all the hard work on the games site. Launching a site to accommodate 16k concurrent users all hitting the refresh button is no easy challenge. I'm sure its been a long day and even longer night for the IT folks.

Comment #14 - Posted by: CrossFit Perth at March 15, 2011 11:58 PM

I like the AMRAP format because it eliminates the possibility that a competitor will get DQ'd for failing to complete a "required" number of reps.

I predict we will see more of the AMRAP format going forward and at least one 1 rep max strength movement since those will be fairly easy to judge on video.

Deadlift, squat or clean and jerk would be good choices IMO.

Comment #15 - Posted by: Doug at March 16, 2011 12:00 AM

I'm a male, in the open category. I have a 45lbs bar but no bumper plates. I only have the small metal plates at my gym to do this WOD with. Should I still touch the ground with every rep?

Comment #16 - Posted by: KAL S at March 16, 2011 12:01 AM

#14

Check out the video on the standards. It answers your question. If you are using 5lb plates, the bar needs to lower below your knees.

In the video they are discussing that as it pertains to the women's weight, so perhaps you are seeking a clarification that the same standard applies for men. It seems to me that would be the case.

You are the man Tony Budding! Great workout to start things off. Gotta love it!

Comment #18 - Posted by: Jeremy Kinnick - Crossfit Kinnick at March 16, 2011 12:10 AM

KAL S
If there's no way for you to get full size bumpers like this, you can just use the other standard of passing the bar below the knee cap. It should be fully below the knee cap (probably closer to mid-shin) to count.

Comment #19 - Posted by: Tony Budding at March 16, 2011 12:11 AM

Kal S, watch the instruction video or download the pdf, will answer all your questions.

Great start, everyone shouls be able to do this, plain, all out, 10 minutes of push, who has the gas. Love it. There will def be heavier wods, this is an awesome start. Good luck everyone, have fun.

Kal, the WOD1VidDemo, from 00:42 to 00:50 aprox, shows hang power snatches (barbell above the knee cap). The WOD1 prescribes a power snatch: the bar below the knee cap, as Tony has said, not necessarily touching the ground if plates are small.
Ryan, good and unexpected question!

Your leaderboard for the masters is going to confuse a lot of folks. It looks like this:

45-50
50-55
55-60

those 50 year olds are going to wonder exactly which bracket they are in. I suggest you correct this.

Week 3 of CrossFit

Ran 15 Minutes 1 1/2Mile
Spent 10 minutes trying to do 1 Double under. I don't know how to jump rope. Started over and switched Double-under for 10 Burpees. The Bar weight was 40kg couldn't find the right weight combo.

10 Minutes I did 6 rounds of 10 Burpees / 7 Power Snatch, first time doing the movement and it kicked my butt.

There is a very interesting read in the NY Times today about the genetics influencing the propensity for athletes to become more fit. Unfortunately, the study has a very limited definition for fitness. Maybe it is worth a look.

I see someone subbed singles for the double unders. Is this official or just a personal choice? I was hoping for a scaling like this for 60+ on the games open but I didn't see it. Any info?

Comment #43 - Posted by: Wayne Hinton at March 16, 2011 5:05 AM

Intersting, I wonder if it was smart to post the fact that some athletes were previlage to this info before the rest of us. I guess it doesn't matter for Khalipa, who's in the games anyway. Anybody know if Laurie G is competing?

This is perfect for us. We origionally had Randy on the schedule at my gym for this Saturday, now it will probably just be this.

#39- That's just silly nit-picking. I can vouch for the fact that Laurie told NO ONE what the workout was ahead of time, not even her best friends or family. and besides, she found out the workout like 10 minutes before she had to do it. Id say all of us, who found out 16 hours later but have 5 DAYS to think about it and do it have the advantage over her only having like 10 min to think about it. I believe she is required to submit that score. Seems totally reasonable and legit to me. And besides, wouldn't you rather see an elite athlete completing the WOD rather than a non-competitor? It is much better to learn from the experience of the elite.

I'm trying to register both my affiliate and myself. Once I hit the confirm button at bottom of first page it takes me to the shopping cart.
Then it doesn't store the profile created.
I want to power snatch this pc then do double unders on it!!!!

Comment #52 - Posted by: Mike J at March 16, 2011 5:57 AM

@ Wayne Hinton:
My understanding is that if you are competing with hopes of going on to regionals you have to do everything rx'd...if you aren't competing and just trying out the WODs its fine to do singles but all people who wish to advance to regionals must do rx'd for everything
Hope that helps! :)

Am I the only one who is still bummed about Reebok and seeing everyone sporting Reebok crap? Or, are these sorts of comments being block from public consumption? Okay, so in two years they will have legit gear that someone might actually wear that isn't getting paid to do so?

I have a couple of athletes that are trying to join my team but the join button seems to be gone from the team page. What to do?

As an affiliate owner who do I get to endorse my wod effort?

Comment #62 - Posted by: Ron Haskins at March 16, 2011 7:05 AM

A couple of observations...

20 kg = 44.1 lbs
25 kg = 55.1 lbs
30 kg = 66.1 lbs
34 kg = 74.96 lbs
35 kg = 77.2 lbs

Would 34 kg + collars be acceptable? My plates only go down to 2.5 kg increments, so I couldn't do this if I wanted to, but I am curious as to how the "powers that be" plan to handle such questions.

One more: If the standard for snatch depth is below the knee, could a competitor (most likely a tall one) obtain a significant competitive advantage by using small plates and positioning some sort of landing pad under each side that would allow the bar to go clearly beneath the knee on each rep before touching, but not necessarily as low as it would go if they had been using regulation bumpers?

Once again, I am not advocating that anyone try this, and I certainly wouldn't allow it in my gym. I just think that clarifying such things as early on as possible will minimize similar questions or problems with them during the weeks to come.

Comment #63 - Posted by: Dane Thomas at March 16, 2011 7:20 AM

Reebok sponsorship is not the end of the Crossfit movement it's just a better way for the community to reach out and share our principles with thousands of people that otherwise wouldn't have know about them. The more people instilled with these principles the better our world will become this is just the beginning of something amazing to become

Today-
10 min AMRAP of:
30 DUs
45# power snatch, 15 reps

2 complete rounds + 30 DUs + 5 power snatches

DUs were all broken, the most I strung together at one time was about 10.

Quick question. I would like to take my family to the 2011 Crossfit games as a spectator/fan. The only way to get tickets that I have been able to find is through ticketmaster. I have no problems purchasing tickets for my wife and I, but it seems a little excessive to spend $100 dollars for the twins. Is there an exception for young children? If not, I will probably end up buying one and not two tickets.

Thanks, and good luck to the competitors.

That is correct! If you google "100 day burpee challenge" you should be able to find official rules online.

Basically you just add a burpee everyday. I am doing the challenge along with wods, and so far I am doing them all unbroken. Although it is hard physically, I think thr real challenge is mental. You just have to force yourself to do them everyday even if you are sore/tired.

Some have submitted requests and I am not seeing them...

Others cannot find the "join" button when they search for the team.

Thanks again!

I am also having trouble registering as an athlete for the games. After placing all my info into the site (including the three checkboxes for what I'm "agreeing to" - even though there's no info there to tell you what you're agreeing to), it kicks over to the empty Shopping Cart.

The frustrating part is, there is no place on the CF Games site to CONTACT ADMINISTRATORS about the problem. I hope they happen to read about the issues here and get 'er fixed up!

Not participating in the CF Games aspect of these WODs. For the foreseeable future, my competition is solely with the little voice in my head that often says "stop!".

Comment #111 - Posted by: Scott at March 16, 2011 10:26 AM

Well I think I know which weight I would choose if I was competing. 35 Kg is just a hair over 77lbs. What they will count as 75 lbs is actually 74 lbs since a standard olympic bar is only 44.1 lbs, not 45 lbs. That's a three pound difference! 15 snatches x a lot of rounds x 3 extra pounds equals a lot more weight.

4 months after a torn rotator, this was my first shot at any overhead lift in a wide grip....so 55 lbs made me happy. I actually did 58 lbs so I could use bumper plates & a 33 lb bar (10's & 2 1/2's).

I completed 4 rounds and 40 reps. The bottoms of my feet went into a cramp??? Interesting, but it felt good to finish it.

Still unable to successfully do double unders. Did single unders and attempted doubles every 5 - 10. In 10 min using 40 lb for snatch, 3 rounds + 30 SUs + 5 PS. Definitely felt the burn on this one.

Complete as many rounds and reps as possible in 10 minutes of:
30 Double-unders
15 Power snatches

4 rounds DUs 14snaches

Broke every 5 reps like the video. DUs hard after the snaches, the snaches make your shoulders tired. I can get 5 plus rounds on it now that I've done it.

Just a quick note on the "history of the games" piece. Maybe I'm a bit too sensitive about this, but I felt the cutting between Everett's deadlift attempt from the original footage to the fake reebok footage of him wearing their shoes made my stomach turn a little. I understand that the sponsorship is great for everyone including myself for the growth and support of the sport, but this takes away some of the authenticity of Crossfit for me. This is a great piece about the history of the games, but in reality it is a commercial branding exercise by reebok. I know a lot of thought went into this, but please try to be more sensitive in the future. Sponsorship and commercials are all fine and great, but I have a problem when they blur the lines of history and authenticity. If anyone knows this best it's you guys...Alex

I went to the Games site to check this out - this question is in the FAQ - but when you click on it to expand it, nothing shows up. I exported the page to Excel and found this:

"Yes. You will need to use another email address of yours to register multiple accounts."

Hope this helps some people out.

I have registered as an affiliate and been approved to test. I can not find my affiliate on the site under the "search for an affiliate" button. I also have no way of setting dates/times for people to test at my facility.

I understand this is new but this is frustrating as an affiliate who has been advertising this and has athletes ready to test.

With the "millions" of dollars rolling into CrossFit HQ now I would think they would have had a better website developed and a better staffed support team to deal with these issues.

Sorry for the rant. Just frustrated and want to get my athletes tested and submitted.

I have a question just like #63 (Dane Thomas). I don't have bumper plates but I do have a full sized bar and small (2x10# & 2x5#). Would it be legal to use a set of parallettes (if they allow the bar to go below the knee caps) to substitute for touching the ground or can there not be anything there?
I feel this is an important question because having to reverse direction while moving at 100% output without a stop is very taxing especially when doing the WOD as Rx'd.

This past weekend, on a whim, she entered her first powerlifting competition. She ended up setting a WORLD RECORD in the Deadlift for over 40 women! Figured I'd try to do this WOD. I actually did a round before I started the timer just to see if I could even PS? I used 65 lb for the PS and a gym rope to jump, not the best. I did one round with out time and in the 10 minutes rx'd I did 3 rounds + 30 DU's. I don't know if that was a good time for me or not? But seeing as I've been having so much trouble rehabing my shoulder from surgery, I guess it is what it is? Least I have a starting point. Good luck out there everyone! Go for it! Leaderboard shows 388 reps for him, but mainsite says he did 7 rds +30DU, +3 Snatches. That's (7*45)+30+3=348, which is 40 points off.

What gives? Is there some crazy formula for calculating points or did he just do it again, get a better score of total reps, and then submit that?

CFWU x 3 Std

4 Rds in 19:49; I'm just so slow. 2 Rds in 10:09 didn't see enough.

DUs are still broken with a single hop between a DU; not effecient

too much stopping to catch breath, too many misses on the DU's, wind was definitely the limiting factor

I'm not competing because I'm pregnant, and not that good. :-) But I did the Crossfit Mom's Pregnant Alternative - 10 minutes of 30 double unders and 15 hang power snatches (35 lb bar) and I got 4 rounds. Woo hoo!!

I'm 35 years old, 10 weeks pregnant, 5'11" and 170 pounds.

Comment #351 - Posted by: Gerard Dawson at March 29, 2011 6:40 PM

Rounds of:
30 Box jumps, 24 in
15 Power snatches w/ 75 lbs

3 1/3 rounds in 10 minutes

Wanted to get 100 box jumps and 50 snatches and hit it with 5 seconds left, so felt pretty good about this one.
