One of the best things with crossfit, apart from the WODs and the results, are the warm-ups at a crossfit affiliate. For example, frankensteins, scorpions, mountain walks, bear walks, and other crazy warm-up exercises. Do the folks who get their WODs from crossfit.com and do them at their own garage gym or at some non-crossfit gym do those super warm-ups before the WOD? Or just stretch a little and then 3,2,1…GO?

Just wondering…

The warm-ups are also what makes crossfit so much fun.

Cool WOD today by the way!

Comment #1 - Posted by: Paul at March 9, 2011 5:02 PM

do a "regular" warmup with a cardio (skip, run row for example) and then stretch and do some calisthetics movements etc. Then 3-2-1 GO!

Are these dead hang pull ups or kipping? Or does it matter?

Comment #4 - Posted by: Thomas at March 9, 2011 5:11 PM

@ thomas, thats the beauty of crossfit. it doesnt specify which type of pullup so do which ever you feel that you need to work on. kipping, butterfly, deadhang, L-deadhang. just do work!

i heart death by pullups!

Comment #6 - Posted by: shaw at March 9, 2011 5:16 PM

Really HQ? A quote from Larry Flynt? And a quote of him invoking God into what he does, no less. God did not make the human body to be lusted after and viewed as an object. Yes, the human body is beautiful, but that is completely different than pornography.

Seriously, guys. You can find more respectable people to quote than Larry Flynt.

Comment #8 - Posted by: fintann mchugh at March 9, 2011 5:22 PM

Do you do 1 pullup, land & then jump up & do another 1 as fast as you can & repeat for 1 minute & then do 2 & land & repeat the second minute?

Comment #9 - Posted by: BIV at March 9, 2011 5:28 PM

Wow, gotta echo Eamon here, good thing he got here first. If you invoke God, Larry, you gotta listen to what He says. God has given us guidelines for how and when the human body is up for display. My wife's body is beautiful, and I love seeing it. But she doesn't need to display it for others, just like I don't need to flaunt my body elsewhere.

Comment #11 - Posted by: Seriously at March 9, 2011 5:38 PM

Should it be a max set of unbroken pullups? Or can we drop off the bar and count the set as long as we get the full number of reps inside the minute?

Comment #15 - Posted by: Jim S. at March 9, 2011 5:49 PM

do one pull-up the first minute..then rest the rest of the minute..2 the second minute..rest the rest of the minute..3 the third..rest the rest of the minute..etc until you can't complete the number of pull-ups within the minute

Comment #16 - Posted by: clinton at March 9, 2011 6:13 PM

#6 I AGREE! One of my favorite WODs.

#4 I did kipping pull ups

#11 Thanks Coach!

#12 first minute (0-59 sec.) do 1 pull up. You will have loads of time to rest. You then have from 1 min.-1:59 to do 2 pull ups, 2 min-2:59 to do 3 pull ups, etc until you can not get the prescribed number of pull ups done in the allotted minute.

Using bands. I suck at pull ups.

Comment #18 - Posted by: slowweak at March 9, 2011 6:24 PM

For those asking about how to do the workout.
Start a clock. Then in the first minute do 1 pull up, only one. Do not do any more pull ups in that minute. Rest for the next 59 seconds or so. Then in the second minute do 2 pull ups. Only 2 and rest for the remaining 58 seconds or so. Then in the third minute do 3 pull ups and rest and so on and so forth until you reach a point where you have to do say 26 pull ups in the minute and you cannot complete the set withing the minute. That is where you stop. Your score would then be 25 minutes plus however many you did manage to complete.

Any pull ups style is allowed, a normal kip is probably the most common.

Comment #19 - Posted by: Daniel B at March 9, 2011 6:25 PM

Excellent.

Comment #20 - Posted by: chuck-O at March 9, 2011 6:32 PM

OK,BIV and stef:
1 Start the clock.
2 Do a pullup (your choice of style).
3 Stand around, flex in front of a mirror, talk to your neighbor, or whatever until the clock says 1 minute.
4 Do two pullups.
5 Repeat step 3.
6 Do three pullups
7 Continue increasing the # of pullups until you cannot finish within a minute.
8 Record the last set of pullups you completed and the type of pullup you chose.
9 Do more next time.

Comment #21 - Posted by: Philbert at March 9, 2011 6:32 PM

Death by Pullup:
1. start the clock
2. do a pullup
3. when the clock says 1:00, do 2 pullups
4. when the clock says 2:00 do 3 pullups....workout's over when you can't do the number of pullups required before the next top of the minute.

Easiest first 5 minutes of a WOD ever :)

Comment #22 - Posted by: Jon at March 9, 2011 6:33 PM

BIV and stef, as Philbert said above just one pullup and then stand around, two then wait, three, etc.

If you can do a lot of pullups, this WOD is really boring for the first ten minutes or so. But it gets tough really quickly.

I'm shooting for 23+minutes if the hands hold up.

Flynt stood for many more important things besides pornography.

Nice quote . . .
Great workout!

Comment #32 - Posted by: ay at March 9, 2011 7:44 PM

Most definately on the warm up, love the expression "Your workout is my warmup". A lot of things have changed since doing CF, better overall. I doubt I would do certain things because weightlifting didn't call for it. 3 2 1 Go.

Comment #33 - Posted by: jason at March 9, 2011 7:54 PM

Seeing as you are in the business of quoting such inspirational and respectable people as pornographers, why not take a few lines from guys like Adolf Hitler? The quote itself is obnoxious enough without revealing who actually said it. Only weak individuals resort to pornography and only weaker ones feel any kind of affinity with people like Larry Flynt.

Comment #34 - Posted by: Gary at March 9, 2011 8:04 PM

Comment #36 - Posted by: Aaron at March 9, 2011 8:23 PM

The video posted "Weightlifting and Kids" raises an issue that I find reckless to promote as 'safe'. I understand that the video is a short segment of a larger presentation. However, the video is presented in truncated format to entice individuals purchase the full Journal. It would be foolhardy to assume that everyone that utilizes the crossfit website is willing and/or able to purchase the full journal. I find the reference to growth plate injuries as an issue that, "maybe thirty years ago surgical techniques weren't as good as they are today, but they're repairable." While in the context of a larger presentation this may be sufficient, I feel that it is unacceptable to promote surgical repair of childrens' growth plates in a 1:50 video.

I have great respect for Crossfit and I very much enjoy its website contributions. But I must note that considering parents/coaches may use the short clip out of context (outside of Crossfit's intentions), I would wish that a link to further, more comprehensive, information on this topic be readily available.

Comment #37 - Posted by: Bryce at March 9, 2011 8:24 PM

Comment #40 - Posted by: Mikes at March 9, 2011 8:29 PM

Hey Crossfit community. Just wanted to wish everyone out there who is competing good luck! I'm still in a set back mode from shoulder surgery 10 months ago. I keep pushing it but the damn thing is still weak and tight. I wish I could compete or just participate at a box. I'll go it alone and work on other weak points in my fitness. My one piece of advice is "Don't Get Injured!", it sucks!
Just had to put that out there. Much love from the "D".

...takes a pretty large sack to quote larry flynt~!

Comment #43 - Posted by: randy@crossfitdenver.com at March 9, 2011 8:45 PM

#29 Aaron - It means that it doesn't matter how you complete the required number of pull-ups every minute, as long as you only take a minute to do them. So for example, say you are on minute 8 and you need to complete 8 pullups within that minute... If you can grab the bar and do all 8 without getting off the bar, GREAT! If not, you can do 4, get off the bar, catch your breath, then do the other 4, or do them 1 at a time if you need to, so long as you complete all 8 within that minute.

Comment #44 - Posted by: PVB at March 9, 2011 8:46 PM

Hell yeah Gill nice overhead position

Comment #45 - Posted by: W^3 at March 9, 2011 8:53 PM

Weird comments today. 7 and 11 don't like the quote because it came from an absolute scum bag (even though it IS kinda funny). Mark F recognizes there are varied opinions and beliefs but doesn't think 7 and 11 should state theirs. Ian misuses Latin phrases. It's a crazy world.

Aaron, "use as many sets as needed" means do one at a time, two at a time, whatever you want as long as you complete the round within the minute. They don't have to be unbroken.

16 rounds.

Comment #46 - Posted by: Max Effort! 6 3 205 pound 43 year old guy at March 9, 2011 8:56 PM

I usually hit a big wall around 10 or 11 on this one - others finding the same thing may be interested to try (once you've got to the maximum you can do) what I then do - have a 1 minute rest, then go back down the numbers. So if you got to say 10 (for me probably involving doing the last 1 just as the minute ticks over), take one minute off, then do 9 in the next minute, 8 in the one after that and so on.

It's always interesting to me how fired up some people get when you say something against pornography, like you've personally attacked everything they stand for. We've had someone reference the pope and child abuse (how creative of you), several call us close-minded, and Sam Harris tell us God is a "nincompoop" who doesn't exist. And Ian, look up the definition of "ad hominem" please.

No one seems to have a problem with bingo's page long posts but if you make a post questioning why HQ put up a certain quote, watch out! You're wasting forum space and shouldn't be posting anything but your time!

I seriously doubt any of you who are for pornography look at it and think only, "That's an example of the beauty of the human physique." If so, you're different than 99% of the other people who look at pornography and see the woman as an object and not a person. That's my problem with it--it turns people into objects. Of course, me thinking that shouldn't happen apparently equates to me being "close minded". The only reason I brought up God is because He was referenced in Larry Flynt's post. So those who said God has no place in our forums is 1) wrong and 2) should have a problem with the HQ quote as well.

Gotta love the liberal mindset--embrace and accept everyone's ideas...as long as they're the same as yours.

"If the human body's obscene, complain to the manufacturer not to me."

Just like to observe that saying that God is referenced in the quote comes from the point of view that God made people, which not everyone holds. If I thought the human body is obscene, I'm going to go complain to evolution, or maybe even the big bang instead:-}

What the quote does is paint the critic of Flynt as believing that they human body is obscene, when in reality many of those critics probably object to Hustler's PORTRAYAL of the human body and not the human body itself. Most of those critics would not have a problem with a nude statue of David or painting of Venus. So the real discussion (hopefully not feud) comes down to what is art and what is pornography, which I believe is subjective. If you don't like someone else's art, you are entitled to that opinion but I think that you have to respect others' freedom as long as it does not cause harm (painting over a stop sign or something like that).

This whole debate is lose/lose. People with Religion have faith, and believe in an undeniable truth that can never be shaken no matter what. People who take a more scientific (couldn't think of a better word) approach to life will never accept something that cannot be proven. You cannot argue facts with faith and ever expect to have a winner. So unless, like me, you just like to hear yourself speak you should not post an opinion on anything you know will lead to this debate, unless of course you like to debate. In that case have at it, but you shouldn't take it all so personal and attack the character of others, especially on a crossfit site. Now for one of my favorite quotes, not against any belief or particular faith, but more against the business of organized religions that exist today.
"In dark ages people are best guided by religion, as in a pitch-black night a blinid man is the best guide; he knows the roads and paths better than a man who can see. When daylight comes, however, it is foolish to use blind old men as guides."-Heinrich Heine

I have read the Moral landscape. twice actually. It is a very good book. And while I find Sam Harris to be brilliant, that does not mean that he is correct. At least not right now. I am a huge supporter of science, and I hope that the ideas that he gives can one day be proven. He himself has said what I reitterated above and did so in that book as well.

The evidence he gives in the book can be argued by looking at actions of some folks that we assume should be moral, but I don't see much remorse from them. So for now, each individual gets to choose what they think is right and wrong. And they can choose it using whatever means they wish.

10 minutes + 9 p/u (Kipping)

Last time I tried it, I had 12min + 5 p/u but that was using the door frame pullup bar which I could grab standing up. This time: bar was at 1' over reach. Jumping up definitely makes it harder but way more fun. Will see the real difference next time I try it. I love this workout.

Team,
Well it was short but effective, due to time constraints and USMC Maj A
wanting to do dead hang PU, we took a little different track...

Adams and Anderson...Dead Hang PU, starting at 5 in the first min, then add
1 per min.
Knellinger would do kipping PU.

The team hung together pretty well
5-6-7-8-9-10-11-12
On the 12th the Maj abandoned the race and LTC took a min off, then went
back to try and do the last 12 with better from.

Anderson did rnds of 13-14 with kipping, then did the 15's with Chest to
Bar, and that was that.
Final Score....
Maj A Dead Hang PU = 68
LTC K Kipping PU= 80...did 12, twice.
CDR A Dead Han PU = 68, kipping =25, Chest to bar = 15.

Calories = 167, avg HR was 60%.

Stretch and done.

M/ 37/ 133 lbs/ 5'-6"
As Rx: 19 complete rounds + 13 pullups (PR)
I was breaking them up into 5 & 6 reps to keep me fresh to keep on pumping these out. I was thinking that in this WOD, it's not how many you do in a row, it's how many rounds you complete. For my best results I usually end up breaking my reps into 5s plus or minus and doing them every 15 seconds. In the begining I take big breaks, most of the remaining minute, until around round 12 and then I start to break it up more and get into a groove. Usually, I kind of hit a wall at about 17, last night I didn't warm up that much since the first 10-12 minutes is a gentle warm up entry into pullups. I really only felt it in my back at around round 16 or so. My final minute I hit the wall and then I was all of a sudden doing 2s. That's when my lats were tired and my hands were really getting sore. The bar I use is really smooth, so it kind of hurts after a while.
Post WOD: I did 5 round of overhead walking lunges with 45 lb bar overhead.. I wanted to balance out with a little leg and pressing movement... then foam roller and stretched for a few minutes.

I allowed myself 30 seconds for sets 1-5, 60 seconds for sets 6-10 and 90 seconds for every set after that, so 15 sets were still completed in 15 minutes and I was probably able to do a lot more pull-ups than I otherwise could have done.

19 rounds + 10-PR. Probably could've got more, but hands were torn up real bad. Didn't have pads on bar.
