- Larry Flynt
One of the best things with crossfit, apart from the WODs and the results, are the warm-ups at a crossfit affiliate. For example, frankensteins, scorpions, mountain walks, bear walks, and other crazy warm-up exercises. Do the folks who get their WODs from crossfit.com and do them at their own garage gym or at some non-crossfit gym do those super warm-ups before the WOD? Or just stretch a little and then 3,2,1…GO?
The warm-ups are also what makes crossfit so much fun.
Cool WOD today by the way!
do a "regular" warmup with a cardio (skip, run row for example) and then stretch and do some calisthetics movements etc. Then 3-2-1 GO!
I meant I do the above...
Are these dead hang pull ups or kipping? Or does it matter?
@ thomas, thats the beauty of crossfit. it doesnt specify which type of pullup so do which ever you feel that you need to work on. kipping, butterfly, deadhang, L-deadhang. just do work!
i heart death by pullups!
Really HQ? A quote from Larry Flynt? And a quote of him invoking God into what he does, no less. God did not make the human body to be lusted after and viewed as an object. Yes, the human body is beautiful, but that is completely different than pornography.
Seriously, guys. You can find more respectable people to quote than Larry Flynt.
Good thing I learned to tape my hands
Do you do 1 pullup, land & then jump up & do another 1 as fast as you can & repeat for 1 minute & then do 2 & land & repeat the second minute?
Wow, gotta echo Eamon here, good thing he got here first. If you invoke God, Larry, you gotta listen to what He says. God has given us guidelines for how and when the human body is up for display. My wife's body is beautiful, and I love seeing it. But she doesn't need to display it for others, just like I don't need to flaunt my body elsewhere.
Should it be a max set of unbroken pullups? Or can we drop off the bar and count the set as long as we get the full number of reps inside the minute?
I dont get this wod, I could use some details and explanation on how to do it....thank's
These days my warmups are five or ten minutes cussing while I jump rope in the pursuit of the elusive double under.
do one pull-up the first minute..then rest the rest of the minute..2 the second minute..rest the rest of the minute..3 the third..rest the rest of the minute..etc until you can't complete the number of pull-ups within the minute
#6 I AGREE! One of my favorite WODs.
#4 I did kipping pull ups
#11 Thanks Coach!
#12 first minute (0-59 sec.) do 1 pull up. You will have loads of time to rest. You then have from 1 min.-1:59 to do 2 pull ups, 2 min-2:59 to do 3 pull ups, etc until you can not get the prescribed number of pull ups done in the allotted minute.
6 sets +4
Using bands. I suck at pull ups.
For those asking about how to do the workout.
Start a clock. Then in the first minute do 1 pull up, only one. Do not do any more pull ups in that minute. Rest for the next 59 seconds or so. Then in the second minute do 2 pull ups. Only 2 and rest for the remaining 58 seconds or so. Then in the third minute do 3 pull ups and rest and so on and so forth until you reach a point where you have to do say 26 pull ups in the minute and you cannot complete the set withing the minute. That is where you stop. Your score would then be 25 minutes plus however many you did manage to complete.
Any pull ups style is allowed, a normal kip is probably the most common.
OK,BIV and stef:
1 Start the clock.
2 Do a pullup (your choice of style).
3 Stand around, flex in front of a mirror, talk to your neighbor, or whatever until the clock says 1 minute.
4 Do two pullups.
5 Repeat step 3.
6 Do three pullups
7 Continue increasing the # of pullups until you cannot finish within a minute.
8 Record the last set of pullups you completed and the type of pullup you chose.
9 Do more next time.
Death by Pullup:
1. start the clock
2. do a pullup
3. when the clock says 1:00, do 2 pullups
4. when the clock says 2:00 do 3 pullups....workout's over when you can't do the number of pullups required before the next top of the minute.
Easiest first 5 minutes of a WOD ever :)
BIV and stef, as Philbert said above just one pullup and then stand around, two then wait, three, etc.
If you can do a lot of pullups, this WOD is really boring for the first ten minutes or so. But it gets tough really quickly.
I'm shooting for 23+minutes if the hands hold up.
Crossfit Sri Ram Ashram, India
Warm up is our weakness. We do a little something then 1,2,3 go. Really should do more.

Man, nudity police, form police, and now, quote police. I knew CrossFit was a popular regimen for men and women in law enforcement, but who knew so many other self-proclaimed "protectors" would join in!?
We're moving further and further away from a separation of church and state. Any chance we could get a separation of church and CrossFit? God bless the first amendment!
Yeah Gillian!! Nice shot girl! TFBA
interested to see what i can do now that i can butterfly!
I jump around and get loose like a boxer for a couple minutes then stretch starting with my neck and work my way down to my calves. Then I do the "official crossfit warmup" 2-3 times. THEN DO WORK!!!
Attaboy Larry Flynt. Well said sir, well said.
Please . . . The human body should always be embraced! Invoking god into this forum is less important than reminding people how beautiful the human body is.
Flynt stood for many more important things besides pornography.
Nice quote . . .
Most definately on the warm up, love the expression "Your workout is my warmup". A lot of things have changed since doing CF, better overall. I doubt I would do certain things because weightlifting didn't call for it. 3 2 1 Go.
Seeing as you are in the business of quoting such inspirational and respectable people as pornographers, why not take a few lines from guys like Adolf Hitler? The quote itself is obnoxious enough without revealing who actually said it. Only weak individuals resort to pornography and only weaker ones feel any kind of affinity with people like Larry Flynt.
Im kind of confused, people are actually post there times right? No one ever really does, I feel like if you want to make a comment you should post your time at the end of the comment.
i was just wondering what "Use as many sets each minute as needed" means. can anyone clarify?
The video posted "Weightlifting and Kids" raises an issue that I find reckless to promote as 'safe'. I understand that the video is a short segment of a larger presentation. However, the video is presented in truncated format to entice individuals purchase the full Journal. It would be foolhardy to assume that everyone that utilizes the crossfit website is willing and/or able to purchase the full journal. I find the reference to growth plate injuries as an issue that, "maybe thirty years ago surgical techniques weren't as good as they are today, but they're repairable." While in the context of a larger presentation this may be sufficient, I feel that it is unacceptable to promote surgical repair of childrens' growth plates in a 1:50 video.
I have great respect for Crossfit and I very much enjoy its website contributions. But I must note that considering parents/coaches may use the short clip out of context (outside of Crossfit's intentions), I would wish that a link to further, more comprehensive, information on this topic be readily available.
Why is there always arguments on the mainsite? It's like people like to be mad. Life is to short.
Equating Larry Flynt with Hitler is pretty dumb.
Hey Crossfit community. Just wanted to wish everyone out there who is competing good luck! I'm still in a set back mode from shoulder surgery 10 months ago. I keep pushing it but the damn thing is still weak and tight. I wish I could compete or just participate at a box. I'll go it alone and work on other weak points in my fitness. My one piece of advice is "Don't Get Injured!", it sucks!
Just had to put that out there. Much love from the "D".
@ #7 & others who will not be able to help themselves "moralizing" the rest of us now that the bait has been cast upon the waters...your attack is ad hominem (and therefore false and unfounded).
...takes a pretty large sack to quote larry flynt~!
#29 Aaron - It means that it doesn't matter how you complete the required number of pull-ups every minute, as long as you only take a minute to do them. So for example, say you are on minute 8 and you need to complete 8 pullups within that minute... If you can grab the bar and do all 8 without getting off the bar, GREAT! If not, you can do 4, get off the bar, catch your breath, then do the other 4, or do them 1 at a time if you need to, so long as you complete all 8 within that minute.
Hell yeah Gill nice overhead position
Weird comments today. 7 and 11 don't like the quote because it came from an absolute scum bag (even though it IS kinda funny). Mark F recognizes there are varied opinions and beliefs but doesn't think 7 and 11 should state theirs. Ian misuses Latin phrases. It's a crazy world.
Aaron, "use as many sets as needed" means do one at a time, two at a time, whatever you want as long as you complete the round within the minute. They don't have to be unbroken.
@ #7 well said. I think the quote is an attempt to justify the position taken by HQ. If your going to debate God's position on modesty, look to the Bible, not Larry Flynt.
16:00 + 7 p.u.
You can post that comment but not my other one?!
22 rounds + 21 reps, as Rx'd
One of my favore WoD cycle's to date! This will be a fun one as well! Lance here I come!!
22 chin over butterfly
13 chest to bar reg kip
Hmm, haven't seen the 10k run come up for a while...
18 minutes for 18 reps.
Outside bar in 40 degree makes those calluses hard as rocks and more painful than the burn in my arms/lats. Press on and get work done though.
10 rnds, 2 pu
I usually hit a big wall around 10 or 11 on this one - others finding the same thing may be interested to try (once you've got to the maximum you can do) what I then do - have a 1 minute rest, then go back down the numbers. So if you got to say 10 (for me probably involving doing the last 1 just as the minute ticks over), take one minute off, then do 9 in the next minute, 8 in the one after that and so on.
12+6 rounds strict pullups, next time I want to try the same with a body swing to see the difference in rounds.
got to minute 15 and callous ripped so I stopped (was feeling great until then tape up next time)
Did the same workout with ring dips and got to minute 14)
learning butterfly pullups
20 rounds (pr) on the dot.
I'm with #7 and the other like minded.
Blah blah blah.....ask yourself....."does anyone really care what I think?".....then post.....
17 + 15 - disappointing
hey everyone....ill be in KEY WEST for the open..anyone know of any friends with a garage gym down there???
21+20 PR (last time 20+15, before 19+15, previous PR 21+15)
Practiced butterfly pull-ups which felt pretty smooth until minute 12, then I started to loose coordination and rhythm and went back to my regular kip.
21+20 are 251 pull-ups total in one workout. This is totally sick and uncommunicable to the non CrossFit population. If I told this to my friends and colleagues they would think that I've lost it completely.
8 rounds + 1
Nice tip #49. Going to give that a try starting ... now.
May I verify.
When it is posted 16 min + 8.
That is you got through the 16 minutes and in the 17th minute got 8?
Just want to make sure I understand.
Scaled using a light band for comparison with last time, but made CTB the standard.
9min + 4 up from 8min + 1 last time. Slow but steady gains :)
I mostly run 1 or 2 miles before the WOD in my vibrams or make up some warm up execises like 8 count push ups, frog kicks, pull ups, etc.
18 rounds + 10 (PR)
11 rounds + 8
#49 Thanks for the suggestion to build up then do the reverse. Got a much better WOD out of it today instead of just being frustrated I crapped out at 11 rounds.
10 min + 10.
Slow and controlled for most part.
#1: I try to shift warm-ups. Y-day I did four Cindy rounds, day before that 25 burpees, day before that 1k row + mobility (shoulders are on constant rehab..). I find rowing, burpees and man-makers excellent for warm-ups anyway, and often mix upp with basic bodyweight exercises like pullups, pushups, squats, situps, back ext.
10 rnds, strict
Rested a few minutes, then
12 rounds, kipping
20 rounds even(PR)
felt sharp pain in shoulder so stopped then
Death by pullups. It was a painless quick death.
7 rounds + 6 in my eighth minute.
Improvement has occured but there is lots of room for more.
13 minutes in good form.
I did two more but my form sucked big time. I couldn't claim either of those two rounds with a straight face.
14 rds + 11
"If Larry Flynt's obscene, complain to his manufacturer not to the CF forum."
10 + 7, strict
A little less than PR.
Kim- great job, as always.
Julie- as long as you are improving, that is all that counts.
@ Sam Harris #90 - I'm sure, if you asked Him, you'd find that the feeling was mutual.
10 + 4
Beginner... my very first official WOD ever!
It's always interesting to me how fired up some people get when you say something against pornography, like you've personally attacked everything they stand for. We've had someone reference the pope and child abuse (how creative of you), several call us close-minded, and Sam Harris tell us God is a "nincompoop" who doesn't exist. And Ian, look up the definition of "ad hominem" please.
No one seems to have a problem with bingo's page long posts but if you make a post questioning why HQ put up a certain quote, watch out! You're wasting forum space and shouldn't be posting anything but your time!
I seriously doubt any of you who are for pornography look at it and think only, "That's an example of the beauty of the human physique." If so, you're different than 99% of the other people who look at pornography and see the woman as an object and not a person. That's my problem with it--it turns people into objects. Of course, me thinking that shouldn't happen apparently equates to me being "close minded". The only reason I brought up God is because He was referenced in Larry Flynt's post. So those who said God has no place in our forums is 1) wrong and 2) should have a problem with the HQ quote as well.
Gotta love the liberal mindset--embrace and accept everyone's ideas...as long as they're the same as yours.
11 min, then 2 callous ripped. This is 3 in 2 weeks on different hands.
I can't speak for everyone, but I've never said someone can't post their opinions as they relate to god, but as with any opinion that makes ridiculous and unverifiable claims for itself, they have to accept the justifiable criticisms that come. just sayin...
Great Pic today main site. Gillian is one of the best Female Crossfiters I have had a chance to train with. She is a great coach and a true threat when it comes to the CF games. Awesome lock out Gill. Court and I miss the hell out of you guys!
Pretty reasonable position and post, presented without rancor or ad hominem. Well done and thank you.
The only inaccuracy is that "no one" seems to object to bingo's page long posts; you should have seen some of the emails I got before they took the email links down!

"If the human body's obscene, complain to the manufacturer not to me."
Just like to observe that saying that God is referenced in the quote comes from the point of view that God made people, which not everyone holds. If I thought the human body is obscene, I'm going to go complain to evolution, or maybe even the big bang instead:-}
What the quote does is paint the critic of Flynt as believing that they human body is obscene, when in reality many of those critics probably object to Hustler's PORTRAYAL of the human body and not the human body itself. Most of those critics would not have a problem with a nude statue of David or painting of Venus. So the real discussion (hopefully not feud) comes down to what is art and what is pornography, which I believe is subjective. If you don't like someone else's art, you are entitled to that opinion but I think that you have to respect others' freedom as long as it does not cause harm (painting over a stop sign or something like that).

I'm pretty sure there is a hundred other quotes that are VERY similiar to todays. I think you are all just getting hung up on who said it. Probably not the best person to quote, but the quote is still powerful.

Oh man I am getting to hate this workout. I didn't break a set till round 18, then it was ALL BROKE UP. my arms just sore of gave up, I had no push from the top. I'd just fall.
Morality is a matter left up to the conscience of each individual. And no matter what anybody thinks, no one is technically more right than the other. period. The only kind of morality that isnt left to the individual are laws.
Used butterflies the whole time. Went unbroken until my set of 24. Did this WOD after my speed bench day and some bi's and tri's.
16 - up from 14 last time around
Rough cycle! A little hard M, hard W yesterday, and hard G today has made for some D-O-M-S!
11 rounds +9, harder than it looks. I've been doing crossfit for about 2 months now, and i love it. The results are great, i feel more fit than i ever did with traditional bodybuilding/weightlifting!!
This whole debate is lose/lose. People with Religion have faith, and believe in an undeniable truth that can never be shaken no matter what. People who take a more scientific (couldn't think of a better word) approach to life will never accept something that cannot be proven. You cannot argue facts with faith and ever expect to have a winner. So unless, like me, you just like to hear yourself speak you should not post an opinion on anything you know will lead to this debate, unless of course you like to debate. In that case have at it, but you shouldn't take it all so personal and attack the character of others, especially on a crossfit site. Now for one of my favorite quotes, not against any belief or particular faith, but more against the business of organized religions that exist today.
"In dark ages people are best guided by religion, as in a pitch-black night a blinid man is the best guide; he knows the roads and paths better than a man who can see. When daylight comes, however, it is foolish to use blind old men as guides."-Heinrich Heine

I love the fact that they do a pull-up WOD after a Bench and Squat WOD!!!!! Good stuff guys.......3-2-1 GOOOOOOO!!!!
I figured that since I can do 50+ kipping pull-ups straight, it was best to challenge myself and do these as strict dead-hangs.

I have read the Moral landscape. twice actually. It is a very good book. And while I find Sam Harris to be brilliant, that does not mean that he is correct. At least not right now. I am a huge supporter of science, and I hope that the ideas that he gives can one day be proven. He himself has said what I reitterated above and did so in that book as well.
The evidence he gives in the book can be argued by looking at actions of some folks that we assume should be moral, but I don't see much remorse from them. So for now, each individual gets to choose what they think is right and wrong. And they can choose it using whatever means they wish.

I think this is about the same as I got last time. Unbroken and fairly easy through round 10, and once I started breaking sets its was all over. Doesn't feel like much of a workout, more of a test of your failure threshold.
Finished up with 400M run on treadmill, 6 sets. Started at 8mph, increased by 0.5mph each set, finished at 10.5mph for last set.

Blew out a callous on rd 18 and babied the last 2 rounds. If the callous hadn't gone I probably would have gone for 21 rds. Decided instead not to do anymore damage before the start of qualifying.
Set a PR on Grace this morning of 4:57. Probably had a little to do with ripping the callous.

Retired Army First Sergeant
Took a yoga class tonight then did the WOD with assisted pull ups:
Also, I completed 12 burpees for day 12 of my 100 day burpee challenge.
13 + 11 (pr by 2 reps - hardly worth noting!)
On the quote - I wish people would think for themselves rather than allow a conditioned response to escape. Doctrine is evil.
the "Sam Harris" I was referring to was the screen name of a poster on this page.
12 minutes for a total of 78 reps
Little embarassing, but you gotta start somewhere, right?
14 rounds + 12 great WOD!!
Well it was short but effective, due to time constraints and USMC Maj A
wanting to do dead hang PU, we took a little different track...
Adams and Anderson...Dead Hang PU, starting at 5 in the first min, then add
1 per min.
Knellinger would do kipping PU.
The team hung together pretty well
On the 12th the Maj abandoned the race and LTC took a min off, then went
back to try and do the last 12 with better from.
Anderson did rnds of 13-14 with kipping, then did the 15's with Chest to
Bar, and that was that.
Maj A Dead Hang PU = 68
LTC K Kipping PU= 80...did 12, twice.
CDR A Dead Han PU = 68, kipping =25, Chest to bar = 15.
Calories = 167, avg HR was 60%.
Stretch and done.

As Rx: 19 complete rounds + 13 pullups (PR)
I was breaking them up into 5 & 6 reps to keep me fresh to keep on pumping these out. I was thinking that in this WOD, it's not how many you do in a row, it's how many rounds you complete. For my best results I usually end up breaking my reps into 5s plus or minus and doing them every 15 seconds. In the begining I take big breaks, most of the remaining minute, until around round 12 and then I start to break it up more and get into a groove. Usually, I kind of hit a wall at about 17, last night I didn't warm up that much since the first 10-12 minutes is a gentle warm up entry into pullups. I really only felt it in my back at around round 16 or so. My final minute I hit the wall and then I was all of a sudden doing 2s. That's when my lats were tired and my hands were really getting sore. The bar I use is really smooth, so it kind of hurts after a while.
Post WOD: I did 5 round of overhead walking lunges with 45 lb bar overhead.. I wanted to balance out with a little leg and pressing movement... then foam roller and stretched for a few minutes.
(didn't try for 13--skin tear...)
5 rounds plus 5

11 rounds + 10 p/u's
pr is 12 - the last time I did this, back on April 6, 2008
Completed 12 rounds + 12 pullups.
well i did 18 in the a.m. and had to stop because my hands ripped apart, so in the p.m. i got pissed and went to redo it and used a roll of tape and covered my whole hand! the tape didnt even help,it just tore apart and i did 18 rounds again! to see my hands go to my facebook randy kirk means is my name! im 100% sure i can do around 30rounds with gloves on! either way, IM SO DAMN SORE!!!!!!!
18 rounds + 18 pull-ups.
No PR - just didn't have it today. Grip was a limiting factor today, just couldn't stay on the bar to string pullups together in later rounds. Unbroken through round 13. Last pull-up in round 19 came a second too late.
12 rounds, 12 reps
19 minutes + 18, That was my first time doing this workout. Sooo much harder than it looked!
19 rounds + 18 - That was my first time doing that WOD definitely snuck up on me!

Bloody hands! I was doing so good, I still had a lot of go at this point and on round 13 I ripped a calouse. I kept going for the next two rounds but it got messy so I stopped. So not impressed. Pretty sure I coulda hit 18+ rounds easily with how I was feelin.
17 rds + 14 pullups
I think I could have gotten through round 18 if my hands hadn't ripped. Fell two rounds short of my goal of 20, but still felt pretty good about doing over 150 pullups total.

Both hands were bleeding a little when I stopped, but I didn't have a catastrophic callus tear, luckily.

I allowed myself 30 seconds for sets 1-5, 60 seconds for sets 6-10 and 90 seconds for every set after that, so 15 sets were still completed in 15 minutes and I was probably able to do a lot more pull-ups than I otherwise could have done.
