So what should we do instead of hand stand walks. I would love to do them but I am pretty positive that i cant.

Comment #4 - Posted by: SteveD at March 3, 2011 5:15 PM

To HQ, can you get the .mov's to load and play on iPhones? A YouTube channel is relatively cheap. I'm full of ideas, I'd love to develop this site given the chance.

Comment #5 - Posted by: Mikes at March 3, 2011 5:18 PM

#4 Go up against a wall as if you were going to do a handstand pushup and alternate raising a hand off the floor and touching the same shoulder. i.e. left hand up left shoulder and just rock back and forth switching hands. I like to do 1.5x more since it's a little easier so 30 reps for tomorrow hope that helps a little

Hello all,

Can the OVERHEAD walk or WAITERS walk appropriately sub for the handstand walk? Would it be better if I did it up and down one flight of stairs?

Thanks!

Hey guys quick question. I'm an Aircrewman in th US Navy and our squadron just had a major loss. Our Commanding Officer CDR Pual Ostrowski just lost a year and a half long
Battle with cancer. I would love nothing more then to honor a great pilot, skipper and man with a crossfit WOD. How can I make it happen. I'd like to make it 7 rounds for His 7 children. Thanks alot guys.

Comment #10 - Posted by: TC Kim at March 3, 2011 6:07 PM

#6 30 total or 30 each ARM? That's sounds like a great sub, I would never have thought of that.

Comment #11 - Posted by: linda at March 3, 2011 6:19 PM

On not being able to do the handstand walk:

I'm headed to a tennis court, where I'll get up belly to the fence and hand stand walk sideways. That was a great scaling idea from Dogtown CrossFit in a Journal piece not too long ago.

I just love watching those kids do today's WOD. As a father of three younger kids, I would love them to get into Crossfit at an early age

I can only imagine the confidence those kids would have in the schoolyard and sports field

great stuff

Comment #16 - Posted by: john s at March 3, 2011 6:48 PM

Mike, I am very sorry for your loss and will pray for his family. I have no insight into how to get an officially recognized Hero WOD, but if you program it, I will do it with honor as a cancer survivor, crossfitter, and grateful civilian. I will suggest it to our box's trainer as well. Let me know. If nothing else, maybe a bunch of us in the community will feel so inclined.

Comment #17 - Posted by: Steve M (34, 6'4 190) at March 3, 2011 6:52 PM

#9 I'm not sure what the best exercises should be, but it could go 7 rounds for each kid and 14 reps for each event to symbolize twice the sacrifice. Just a thought.

#11 Thanks for the great sub suggestion - sideways against a wall.

36:28. Had to wait for squat rack. Totally failed on handstand walks. Ended up against a wall but could barely lift my hands enough to approximate a walk.

Definitely found a new goat to add to the list.

You have to love CF on days like this. Thanks for the challenge. I learned there are no legit subs for HS walks, and did them 1-2 feet at a time, but I still did them. Just as tough as the wall-walks a few weeks back. I love that sense of accomplishment afterwards.

Back squat is one of my major weaknesses
As rx'd 24:10
Handstand walks took only about 2:30-3:00 of the whole time. The other 20+ was from the back squat. 135 lbs was way too heavy for me. Legs are jello right now.

Garage WOD.
-only used 65lbs, no squat rack, didn't feel comfortable doing more weight by myself.
-handstand walk: sloped driveway, tried going up (not so great), tried going down (not so great), tried on lawn (lumpy, not so great), tried 20 hand lifts doing HS agains wall (best).
-only four rounds as friend came by. Oh, the drawbacks of the garage WOD.
-did get good warm up: jog around block, doubleunders, squats, Bergoner warm up.

Subbed walking on my hands sideways along a wall, in my garage, since I still don't have a handstand. I underestimated the distance and only ended up doing 14 yards. I would get light headed after the handstands walks. Shoulders were tired after doing Master WOD #7 yesterday involving push presses and pullups.

Five rounds for time of:
135 pound Back squat, 20 reps
Handstand walk 20 yards

as RX'd
time 23:27
all squats unbroken
hand walking a mess, fell a few time ect,ect as it goes. actually set 4 and 5 were my best sets on my hands.

squats were good. set 2and 3 really tough. I hit them breathless from the walking, but it was ok, I used it to manage the reps. Set 4 and 5 on the squats it was all just to keep going. I so wanted to stop but I knew in my head I didn't NEED to, it wass just really hard, so i was able to push through.

last time
subbed wall walk 60reps per round.

I did not have an ideal place to do this one at the 24. Next time try to do this one on the BB court.
-Squats definitely killed my time. I did not have a squat rack, so I clean and jerked it before I started each time. Rounds 1 and 3 were unbroken, but slow. Rounds 2,4,5 were broken into two rounds.

-Alternated lifting hands 20 times while in handstand against wall

Back squat felt good-I should go heavier next time.

I also did 6 strict burpees for day 6 of my 100 day burpee challenge!

Comment #106 - Posted by: Sarah (22/121/5'4") at March 4, 2011 3:13 PM

Subbed wall walks for this one...I did 10 per round...I know its "easier" but it didn't feel easier and covered about 60 yards each round!
I didn't realize it was the equivalent to 60 yards until I did the math AFTER the WOD
Anyways 29:58...pretty happy with that time considering all that yardage covered!
Squats were UB/ 11,9/ 11,9/ 12,8/ 11,9

NATO helicopter gunships killed nine young boys on Tuesday in Afghanistan while they were collecting firewood near their home in the northeastern province of Kunar. The boys were all between the ages of nine and 15. The dead included two sets of brothers...
It was at least the third instance in two weeks in which the Afghan government accused NATO forces of killing large numbers of civilians in air strikes. An Afghan government panel is still investigating claims some 65 people, including 40 children, were killed in a U.S.-led attack last week.

I tried to get as close as possible to RX as I could. I knew I couldn't walk on my hands so I subbed wall HS shoulder touches (wall runs) 30 touchs per shoulder and did 135lbs on the squat. When I saw this WOD I was completely unafraid. Three rounds and 13:40 seconds into it and realizing I can go no farther I now see the error of my ways.

Time for 3 rounds 13:40

Did this workout on Monday, March 7, 2011. My body was really sore from the 3 workouts and baseball game I put it through last week. I rode the bike for 5 mins. I did one round of the CFWU, assisted pull-ups at 55 lbs. I did the TRX band overhead squats and a reverse fly to help open up my chest. I modified this workout to squat 95 lbs. and I did 3 wall walk-ups per round instead of the handstand walk. (I'm still building into being able to do a handstand.) I worked on keeping my left foot strong and not caving in too.

I finished the fiver rounds in 29:31. It was hard to get a real high heart rate going.

Five rounds for time of:
135 pound Back squat, 20 reps
Standing shoulder press w/ 45 lb dumbbells, 20 reps

This sub actually worked pretty well. Split the squats into two sets each time, while the presses I was doing in 2's and 3's by the end.

BrandX Pack scaling turned into a Puppy

CFWUx3 (sub 4pu's and 8 dips), row 500m

5 RFT of:
20x95lb back squat
20 yd handstand walk

Turned into 3 RFT of 20x95lb back squat and just trying to get up into a handstand and stuttering forward a few steps until I eventually reached 10 yds. Was not aware of the shoulder touch or wall sideways walk as subs. Will work on those until next time.

Me: 44yo/M/5'10"/184lbs/15%BF

Warm Up: Greg A's Warm Up 10 reps per exercise.

WOD: 22:30

Five Rounds of:

20 reps Back Squat: I broke these into 10 and 10 with about a 30 second rest in-between the two. I did low bar Back Squat all the way down A to A and a completely open hip at the top.

1 minute Handstand Hold: Walking on my hands hurts my right elbow for weeks every time I do them so I did 1 minute of handstand holds. I was able to do this without breaks. 1 minute is just about all I can take, especially on the later rounds.

I wobbled out of the gym. I almost passed out, it was weird. Although it was noon and I had not had anything to eat yet....

Have Fun, Train Hard,

Billy
