Loving the different wods lately
Lipson and Camille: Nice WORK.....Pulp Fiction Soundtrack was a nice touch! ha CrossFit Nation!!!!
EXCITED, EXCITED, EXCITED!
Nice to see Lipson again. Very impressive performance! Isn't he the son of a rabbi, not a preacher man?
HOLY LIPSON!!! Great work.
nervous, excited, soar from yesterday...this is only day 5 of crossfit and i am loving it. you guys motivate me!
If you know you can pull the SDHP but your OH squat blows, would you increase the SDHP and decrease the OH squat (say to 135/45) to keep the same-ish amount of work done? I would feel like I let myself down subbing the OH squat and leaving the SDHP as is. Any help would be awesome!
#8 If I were you I'd keep the SDHP the same and either increase the amount of reps done on OHS or just struggle my way through prescribed weight. Doesn't really matter though. The last thing I'd do is increase the amount of the exercise I'm strong at and not hit my weakness.
great form in giardina's vid, those three guys know what they are doing, lipson and camille on the other hand very disappointing, poor form and range of motion
I have never been to Sweden and am ignorant of the climate. Is it that nice there already? I would not think so and guess this photo is from another time. Can someone answer this? Thanks
Some close squatters up in ATL. Nice recovery Mike!
#10, Fab
Dude really, you have to start this?
Their squats were fine, all OHS's hit that 90 degree or lower mark. I watched it like 4 times just because of your comment.
Chach,
Not to create a comment war but c'mon. He is pulling the sdhp to his nipple line, the bar should be hitting his chin. Makes a big difference those couple inches. I think Giardina's is way more impressive to recover like that and with great form the whole time!
Thank you for the advice @adamk
Mike G's form was impressive. Dude is bad ace! Keep good form! Gotta get to the chin on SDHP!
Standard for the SDLHP is between the clavicle and the chin.
Looking forward to this one :) Nice sprint. Maybe I'll get some accessory stuff in!
I guess the slop factor lets the VERY BEST top athletes to cheat ROM. Games standards to bottom of chest?
Lipsons and Camille vid, are you serious? Not a single rep to range of motion, someone as strong as lipson pulling to his nipple? And #14, i watched it like 4 time too because of what you said, and not a single rep made it to 90 much less breaking 90. wow.
Mike G, Ken G, and Lucas B, nice work! way to have some integrity of movement even when it made your times a bit longer, at least those are legit times. Strong work.
Horrendous form... Lipson and Camille.
I have a Question Is 50 to old to do a Cert 1 course? thoughs on this
@Gary, not at all. Level 1 Certs are for any and all. Remember infinitely scalable. And participation is not mandatory, just highly encouraged.
Go for it dude, can't recommend it enough.
Not usually one to hate but I must admit that it seems like the ATL crew was held to a much higher standard on ROM than Lipson and Camille. I'll give them the squats since that's one of the worst possible angles to check for depth, but the height reached on the SDLHP was not to par. Tremendous athletes, but questionable performances.
Gary, sign up! Age is just a number, baby! :)
# 12 - it´s winter in sweden right now.
SDLHP is a wide sumo stance, if I'm not mistaken, and when the arms bend, the power ends, core to extremity violation if you will. That's all I'm going to say.
#25 Gary...man, you're only half way there!! Definitely go for it; I got eight years to go and I can't wait to look 40 while acting 30 at 50...go big!
Scaled and used two bars:
SDHP: 37kg
OHS: 31.5kg
in 6:22
IF YOU DO NOT COMPLETE THE FULL ROM FOR EVERY REP IN EVERY EXERCISE IN THE RX'D WOD...THEN YOU DID NOT DO THE WOD AS RX'D!
Still great efforts!
Hei Perfekt sommer bilde :-) Lykke til med all trening Kristin
After a nasty car smash a few years ago, I'm slowly getting back into action. I've had to cancel my Level 1 Cert twice - once in Milan, Italy, and once in Basel, Switzerland. Let's hope I can get it done this year.

New to the overhead squat, and felt like a sissy with the 45lb bar. Finished this 3day cycle with arms, calves, and abs, then a nice long slow run tomorrow.
With form like that I could slash my times also.. All you would here where I train is no rep... No rep... No rep for pretty much all 21-15-9.
But hq will delete my post then block me and carry on justifying Everything..
The gods may do what the cattle may not..
What is Dave Lipson wearing on his wrists ? Is that to help with stabalizing his wrists during the OHS ? My trouble with them is it hurts my wrists to have them bend sideways and also in the palm of my left hand it feels like the tissue in the hand is going to split apart its so tight.
So do those things he has on help with keeping wirst tight, if so what are they called ?
One thing that might be worth taking into consideration is that the actual work put into this WOD might have been greater for Lipson than the other dudes on the other video. Simply because he is pretty tall, so the actual height he lifted the weights might be greater. Just saying...
#36 It is just exercise and if a 50 Year old new to CF woman had performed like that at my box I would say Great work!! For everyone else CF has standards and for two of the world's BEST, I say FAIL.
#12 The photo was taken in August, 2010.
OKAY I love CrossFit!! BUT, We are held to a certain level technique, striving for virtousity, yet we continue to post videos displaying partial and incorrect movement patterns!
WE are NOT going to let this happen!
The standards for the SDHP , up until today apparently, have been Full hip extension , shrug, HIGH elbows and bar to the chin.
New standards = no shrug, bar to chest, elbows below bar.
NO!
Cosmo, where are you? I need a time to shoot for!
As rxd. (65 lbs). 11:16. All the way up, all the way down.
Wow it feels so good to do a wod at rxd weight. Xfit!!!
6:22. SDLHP @ 95#. OHS @ 45#.
5:42 rx. Dropped one rep into 15 overhead squats because of an intense pain in my hand, but other than that I did each movement unbroken. Just too much rest between movements.
I have to agree with the ones who call out bad form. If everyone does it right..then its fair for everyone. We all compete at crossfit WODs to see how we rank as competitors amoung one another. I know when Im attempting a WOD at R'xd, I only think about two things..proper range on each rep and not quitting. So much sometimes that I often lose my rep count. Sponser athletes doing mainsite WOD's and posting there Videos R'xd on the mainsite should expect their Vids to be held at the highest standards. I wouldnt even send in my video if it wasnt done right. Just saying. If this workout was one of the open workouts and they sent it in as R'xd would it count as far as HQ is concerned since it is Lipson and Camille....
21-15-9 reps of:
95 pound Sumo deadlift high-pull
95 pound Overhead squat
time 8:36
set of 21 both unbroken, but sumos were slow, I didn't push for speed here.
set of 15 sumos 10 and 5, OHS unbroken
set of 9 unbroken.
The sumos were not fast, I took my time through them and focused on good back and breathing.
OHSs were as they are. Breathing was good on them all though I lost balance here and there and had to tighten back up to go again, but I didn't put the bar down.
I took to long inbetween sets. Alot longer then I'd have liked, but happy with everything else.
Oh the form haters are out in force. Last I checked the instruction was to post times to comments. I didn't see anything about posting video critiques, or bad mouthing the athletes in the videos. Somebody always says, oh I go lower, or I pull so much higher, or no wonder their times are so fast they dont do the full ROM. Get over it, you are doing crossfit for you right? How does anyone elses performance affect you? Its all fun and games until The Games and then you get ROM judged so anyone taking short cuts is hurting only themselves. Happy WOD'ing everyone.

OHS
Primary Points of Performance :
• Lumbar curve maintained
• Weight in heels
• Depth below parallel
• Knees track over feet
• Active shoulders throughout movement
• Bar stays overhead, in the frontal plane
SDLHP
Primary Points of Performance :
• Hips open before shrug and arm bend
• Bar is pulled up to just below the chin
• Fast and aggressive
• Elbows travel and finish high and outside; elbows are higher than the hands at all times during the movement

The extra squats last night were a bad idea.
On sdhp's are you supposed to pop it up from the crease like on a snatch? I played around with my form a bit and found a sweet spot where I could get extra pull on the bar by imitating my snatch movement in my lower body. I used to just straight pull off the ground, but these new ones had a slower first pull...and were much easier (more efficient)
Really it's not a matter of how other peoples movements are affecting me, it's the fact that we preach form to our clients and when newbies come to the site and check out the videos they should be seeing good examples every time. There are plenty of people out there doing these workouts correctly and getting blistering fast times, why not show them? If a WOD video is posted it is the duty of those posting to be sure that form is correct throughout the workout so that people viewing them know the right way to do the movements... Doesn't hurt my feelings that these phenomenal athletes cheated, didn't make a shred of difference in the way I approached the workout. I do however think it's funny that the CF Facebook page recently posted a pic of a guy doing some "cheating" and the title was "penalty's for cheaters?" So what's the penalty??

Scaled this one to 70lbs. Legs and shoulders still torched from last two days. Great, short and intense workout. As far as bashing other athletes and the ROM I see it like this, if you hit every rep with every bit of ROM then you know your time is legit. If you see a WOD video that is done with slightly less ROM then you know how your time really stacks up. Crossfit is for you! Sharing times and weights is part of the fun.

have a great weekend crossfit world
The two sets of videos showing the variances in range of motion brings up the question is to what is acceptable video submission/judging for the cf open. I don't think the problem will be the guy posting a 1.40 fran time then showing up at the regionals and not being able to string together 5 pull ups but rather the difference of two people with close times with different ROM and it being the deciding factor between making the cut or just missing it. Between Lipson and Giardina is 17 seconds, ROM could make all the difference.
On the other hand what is the person who misses/makes the open cut likely to win the games games...problably not so who cares just have fun with it.

Lipson, that is so poor. How is this guy a famous crossfitter now? Because he can squat a lot? Just bring in some guys (or gals) from Westside if thats all that matters. I have not seen him perform a single workout with full range of motion. Sad, this will be the last time i watch a video posted of him, unless its to show someone how to cheat a WOD. No integrity of movement, a bit surprising HQ allowed it to be posted, maybe they did to see if they could stimulate conversation around poor form and cheating standards.
Created my new standard in honor of todays posted video standards.
Went Bar to Belly Button on SDHP and must break 45 degrees on squat.

Perfect squat form with serious weight.
eeee, i'm a Lipson fan usually, but i have to say that workout was substandard, by a long ways.
I look at it like this. I focus on my form and make sure I I have strict form, and let people do there own thing. over head squads need a lot of work sdlhp's loved them.
There's a positive to be taken from Lipsons and Camille's video in my opinion. I will use this as an example in my box on how cheating your range of motion not only cheats yourself, but can effect the people around you. From what I've seen, Camille has always been good on range of motion and form. In all fairness Lipsons range of motion has been questioned many times before, it seems to me that in this situation, Camille defaulted to Lipsons standard and performed differently than maybe she normally would have. I want the people in my Box to know that everything they do effects the people around them.
To all those people that rag on us for picking on the form well people if you were in a comp and the guy next to you is doing half the work and getting away with it you wouldn't be to happy! You pumpin 12 ft wall balls and they are hitting 10.5 and it's getting through you would be on here moaning about it.
As someone said before the workout is not as it should be..
Maybe it's ok for you to go through life half arsed.. But not for me thanks...
worked on rowing technique today.
I think the Lipson/Camille video was clearly intentional. With the open coming up, I think HQ asked them to perform a workout that was clearly below standard to show how people can get called out using video to record their wod. Maybe I'm wrong here, but having 2 of Crossfits best perform a workout like that, seems obvious to me, at least I hope so.

It is good to finally see the community calling out these 'elite' athletes on ROM. That video was repulsive, and it says something about the character of those athletes to be willing to put their own names and post to the world such disregard for mechanics of movement. Didn't you two go to a Level 1 ?! Mechanics and Consistency over Intensity. Sorely disappointed.

A word on the decorum of those in the Lipson debate:
Lipson is not a god. Lipson is not everything that is wrong with CrossFit, either. Lipson did not achieve the range of motion that the folks in the other video did. But his form wasn't "horrendous." From reading these comments, you'd think that the only two adjectives in the English language are "beautiful" and "terrible."
I mean, I understand the frustration: a lot of folks think that Lipson's video isn't a good example for CrossFitters worldwide. And maybe it isn't. But a lot of you are talking about it like he killed somebody. This is just exercise, everybody. We'll survive.

That Lipson Camille vid had to be on purpose, why else would you do a workout like that and then post it for everyone to see!! Embarrassing if not intentional.
Cooper C, "horrendous" is a perfect description of Lipsons range of motion in that workout. There is definitely some range between beautiful and terrible, and many times people get on here and really critique form and range of motion that isnt that bad or pretty close to being good, but you have to be kidding me with those SDHP, this video could be succesfully used as a "how not to" instructional. Below poor.
as rx'd, 8:20. legs, shoulders and back are pretty fried from this cycle. really needed to do some foam rolling first, but didn't have the time.
Don't know if it matters but at the beginning of the video it stated at the bottom of the screen the standard for the sdlhp was between the sternum and the chin. If thats the case the movement was good. Regardless, still a great performance.

Camille and Dave video ... awful!
I keep sending new people to the main site to learn about Crossfit and THIS is the example HQ posts for them to learn from? A terrible example of "time is more important than form", and if new people follow this example they will develop terrible habits and get hurt.
As for me, these examples just make me sick. I thought Crossfit standards were supposed to be higher than that.
I do my best to follow those (original) standards, so I am not inspired by these terrible examples of "speed over form".
There are plenty of Crossfit affiliates who still hold these higher standards, so I guess the answer is to stop visiting the main site and visit those sites instead.
I believe HQ is turning into a commercial beast anyway, and will soon allow McDonald's to advertise on their site. lol!

This was a really good WOD.
I took a bunch of breaks, probably too many, but it was a good hard WOD. I split my first 21 SDHP after 15 reps then finished right into the OHS, and split those into 14,7. I think did 10 + 5 SDHP and then about the same for OHS.
I did both last unbroken, but stopped between two for a few seconds. I tried to always go right into the OHS without a break.

Did it occur to anyone that they posted two videos for a reason? A video with poor form and one with good form.
I'm sorry but but none of the people I saw doing this workout were doing SDLHP's
But don't believe me, open YouTube, and search: "Sumo Deadlift High Pull Courtesy CrossFit Inc."
Here Greg Glassman explains how this lift should be done.
There is way too much movement front to back being demonstrated in the first video, especially by Camille, she barely bends her legs at all, and is placing all the weight of this movement into a sort of swinging movement of her upper body forward and back, instead of up and down, and shrugging with her shoulders.
I sincerely hope no one is injured following her demonstration, her form is very poor!

Not for time but did push it. Wasn't sure if I was going to be able to do it. RT shoulder soar after going heavy last week and trying to climb the rope 3 days ago. 9 months post shoulder surgery 90% mobility. The last 10% is super stiff and hurts because of a little over training. Felt good to push & breath hard!

After all the comments re: form I watched the video of Lispon & Camille and LOL'd. Their form is marginal at best, especially on the SDLHP.OHS were not great either
Sorry, but I wouldn't let my crossfit kids (7 & 9) count those reps. The thing is, when the main site puts up a video of a WOD, most of the people watch it expecting to see THE BEST Crossfitters perform THEIR BEST; not doing half-a$$ reps or in some cases 1/4 a$$ed reps. More often than not, I'd say we see the latter in these videos & it's disappointing.
For those of you defending the poor form in the video, no one is attacking Liipson or Camille personally, we are just saying this is not the best example of how to do a WOD & it NEEDS to be said so that Crossfit Newbies don't think this is the way things should be done.
That's it, I will now climb down off my 30'' soap box.

Did this workout on Friday, March 4, 2011. I did a quick 3 min. warm-up on the elliptical and raced through one round of the CFWU.
I did both the sumo deadlift high-pull and overhead squats at 65 lbs.
I finished in 10:26. I did pause slightly to ask for a technique spotter after the second round.
My left elbow is pulling higher than my right. My left foot is rolling slightly inward so that the outside edge of my left shoe is lifting slightly. My foot has been a little sore, but not too bad. This was a nice, non-pounding workout.
