funny, I just did 100 burpees for time at the gym, come home and see this. I did not do the pull ups though. Concentrated on full ROM with real jumps and real push ups. First time I did this many consecutive.

Comment #14 - Posted by: sevan at February 4, 2011 6:46 PM

hmmm, no bar 1 foot above reach - how hard would this be to do with rings one foot above my reach? Freakishly hard i'm assuming, but...think about the co-ordination it would involve.

I'm tempted to do it, but I've never consciously made a mainsite WOD harder than prescribed - the mere thought gives me chills.
I'll sleep on it:)

Judas that's impressive Heather!

Love this WOD no matter how pathetic I feel after a few reps under my belt.

Comment #16 - Posted by: Apolloswabbie 72.5 209 46yoa at February 4, 2011 7:23 PM

If you got the feeling from the NY Times opinion paragraph (in the vein of "This I Belive", who could possibly be anti-American after listening to "This I Believe"? send tapes of "This I Believe" to the Parisians and even they will come knocking - for a fourth time?) that Babcock has a serious case of ADD, have a look at http://www.econ.ucsb.edu/~babcock/LeisureCollege_4.pdf for a short (but longer) and better statement of his analysis.

Or just marvel at Heather the Lion-hearted.

Hey, Apolloswabbie, its good to see you posting....

Also,

The Two-Ply Shirt video is cool. I always wonder about stuff like "bench shirts". I have talked to Rip and others about these "tools of the trade" and I think its cool, at least to know of its existence. I probably have a different prospective on this stuff than most folks who read this blog now but..... Knowledge is power.

I choose to lift without aids and I love exercise period. I would love to see more articles on topics like "two-ply" shirts and everything else that fit people use to focus or enhance performance.

C'mom coach, please, please, present more info on sh!t like this.... and feel free to post scantily clad ladies as well. You can call it "throw back" to the old, "pre crossfit games" days :-)

Have Fun, Train Hard,

Billy

Comment #19 - Posted by: CrossfitBilly - Olympic Crossfit at February 4, 2011 7:50 PM

Is it just me or the way Heather does it completely destroys the purpose of burpees?

Burpee = pushup + squat thrust (+ transitions)

This is a different effort from doing a pushup, basically getting up from a crouching position and then jumping with the calves onto a bar.
Still a great effort on her part but I think the objective is compromised a bit.

Comment #20 - Posted by: psycopathlete at February 4, 2011 8:04 PM

I have to disagree psychoathlete. The purpose is doing the work. In other words moving X amount of weight over Y amount of distance in the least amount of time. That's power; and that's CrossFit. (Of course, I do agree with the "great effort" part.)

Comment #21 - Posted by: John Seiler at February 4, 2011 8:15 PM

Anyone have any ideas for dealing with a pull up bar that is too high? I need it lower than one foot since I'm still developing my pullups. I'm thinking of putting a box under the bar, doing a jump up onto the box, jump into the pull up and jump back off the box and back into a burpee. But.... besides making it a lot harder, I'm not sure it would flow like it should.

Comment #22 - Posted by: jordan at February 4, 2011 8:21 PM

Say what you want about Heather's form... I don't care; I'm in love. Burpees hurt my soul.

Re the video about 2 ply shirts. I never understood it. Why say you can something if you really cant do it unless it is with help? Those guys cannot lift that weight without the aid of the shirt right? Then whats the point? Lose the 2 ply shirt and post your actual lifting numbers....unaided. Thats what people want to see. If I use a scuba tank, should I brag to everyone that I can breath underwater?

#34 Jim:

I completely agree. What's more is, according to the video, these shirts are also dangerous, as it promotes going to a weight people can't handle, and when they slip up on form, even slightly, they end up cracking their face or skull.

I started doing crossfit because of all of the gear powerlifters started using. Don't get me wrong I know it is still very hard but it isn't a true lift. I think crossfit is being watered down now also with spandex clad athletes and lifting straps. I miss the old shorts and maybe a tshirt days.

The most simple monk, Elder David, would tell his visitors about this kind of criticism: "Be careful, do not say one person does this and the other does that. If you do so, you lose Christ's grace. Even if you see a person acting like an ass, do not criticize. Love your neighbor as you would your own self. This is what Christ tells us to do."

The highest pullup bar I had access to I could touch with my fingertips flat-footed. However, the ceiling was about 8-10" above my reach, so I did burpees and touched the ceiling with my knuckles then jumping pull-ups.

12:37. The pullup bar was only 5 inches above my fingertips. Highest we had at the gym.

Comment #116 - Posted by: SB at February 5, 2011 1:21 PM

gonna try this tomor. when i have done this exercise in the past i have used my momentum from the jumping part of the burpee to help my pull up upon gripping the bar.

Is this cool? Not that i'm gonna cry if it's not i just noticed from the vid that Heather doesn't seem to use her momentum. I figured it speeds it up. kipping vs strict.

Forgot to stop the timer but it was about 15 minutes.

Ring pull-ups. Rings were actually about 6 inches from reach instead of 1 foot.

Comment #228 - Posted by: James at February 7, 2011 11:34 AM

Highest bar was only 6" above my reach, so I made all the pull ups C2B instead.

I really paced myself. I think I should have gone a little faster, but at the end I did the last 18 pretty close together and was spent for a few minutes for sure.
I always like/ hate this workout.
I really try to explode up from the bottom of my burpee position upward to the pullup bar and through the pull-up.
I had a bit of a nagging back muscle pull and wasn't sure if I'd be able to do this WOD but since I've been somewhat babying it and avoiding pullups for over a week, I tried the workout.
Not too bad overall.
