OMG, you can see his whole head! My kids will be so offended. They've only seen people with hair. Seriously though, I want to know how many people who were so offended yesterday came back today. Most, if not all of them, I presume.

There is nudity. You can see her arms all the way up to her elbows, and as Nate pointed out, he is bald. He should cover his head, for shame. And why isn't she wearing her burqa?

Last time I was doing push jerks I had a torn Calf muscle that tweaked out on me. had to stop. so prob going to start light here and could work up... not sure..

Ah, the obligatory January WOD with GHD sit-ups so that we can talk about scaling and Rhabdo. Here we go!

These are pretty cool WOD's, a relatively new phenomenon since I've been around, arriving last year some time. 5 rounds for time (RFT) of the couplet 20 GHD Sit-ups/5 Push Jerks. Wait. What? Where's the load? What's the weight for the Push Jerks? How will I know if I'm doing it "as Rx'd" or not? Hehe, that's the newness, the coolness of this WOD type: you get to choose your poison! Too heavy= too slow=bad choice, Bozo. Too light=too fast=wimp. See article from yesterday. Umm...on second thought...

There's the beauty of this WOD. YOU choose the weight for the Push Press. Are you really strong? Got some experience with Oly lifts? Verrrry cool. Pick a big number. Did you see Kristan Clever? Yah, she did more than MY body weight, and she's 6+ inches shorter and lots of pounds lighter than I. It looks like the target time for this WOD, the time domain we are aiming for is 10:00. Pick a weight that will put you in that range.

Sticking with movement 2, what is a Push Jerk? We have three foundational overhead lifts, the Press, the Push Press, and the Push Jerk. Well now, any guesses where you might find a video or two on the difference? YES! The "Exercises and Demos" section top left on the Main Page. Johnny, tell our contestant what they've just won. The Push Jerk begins with the weight, whatever you have chosen, in the rack position, across your upper chest and anterior delts. The first move is a DIP, a bend in the knees, followed by an explosive DRIVE or your legs, arms, and explosive opening of your hips. In mid-drive there is a second DIP as you complete the overhead move by "catching" the weight above in a 1/4 squat. Stand up with the weight overhead. One. Do five.

20 GHD sit-ups. Glute Ham Developer. A devious device, that. Have you used one before? Do you regularly and routinely do GHD sit-ups as part of your warm-up? Of COURSE you haven't! Of COURSE you don't! You're a Newbie. NOBODY comes to Crossfit having done GHD sit-ups. Silly goose. You're not going to do GHD sit-ups. Heck, anybody who is here who doesn't regularly and routinely practice GHD sit-ups SHOULD NOT DO GHD SIT-UPS in this WOD.

A couple of stories, if I may. I visited CF San Diego a couple of years ago. Lisa Lugo invited me to join her class, and the WOD called for 30 GHD sit-ups total. She only allowed me to do 15 since I had never done one before. 15. Total. The following morning I could not walk. Nope. Moved like some sort of prehistoric crab-like thing. Hurt for days. Not as bad as the knucklehead who didn't listen to me a couple of years ago and did all of the as Rx'd GHD sit-ups despite no experience with then. Yah...localized ab muscle trauma/rhabdomyolysis requiring hospitalization/ $crotum the size of a grapefruit from descending edema.

Don't do it.

Newbies and anyone not experienced with GHD sit-ups should sub either regular SU or Ab-mat SU, same number. If you insist on GHD's do 5 per round. 5. FIVE. Cinco. Cinq. Seriously. You've been warned.

Post your time and the load you chose to the comments. Work hard, tomorrow is Rest Day. Ready? 3-2-1...Go.

Comment #18 - Posted by: bingo at January 12, 2011 5:51 PM

I looked damn good the first 12 days of the year at my globo gym doing muscle ups and hspu's.

How am I supposed to impress the NYE crowd and the fly hunnys in the pole dancing class doing GHD sit-ups and push jerks? Rows and push-ups?

I guess its back to the ol' college antics and puking in trash-cans.

"Christmas" trees are actually paganism. We should all be offended. Unless of course you are a pagan. Which is OK with me even though I don't think I am one. Except perhaps on certain holidays when I know all the in-laws are going to show up and eat all my food and drink all my beer. Not on the paleo diet here...Mr. Ashley (like myself) is "follicly challenged" Comments about our collective baldness are highly offensive. Come to think of it I have more hair on my "backside" than his head!

Comment #30 - Posted by: noobinator at January 12, 2011 6:51 PM

push jerk.... maybe kipped handstand push ups, or push jerk from your knees depending on the load you are working and what you can manage... or just shoulder press.... i think the point is to kill the shoulders, so find a way!

GHD... check youtube, it is a horizontal rig where you sit with feet out, lay back, touch the floor (but and feet supported) sit up and touch your toes... to the rx'd # reps

To echo Bingo, DO NOT DO ALL THESE GHD SITUPS IF YOU HAVEN'T BUILT UP TO THAT VOLUME.

Comment #35 - Posted by: Eric at January 12, 2011 8:40 PM

#25 Graham Jorgensen

If you don't know what a GHD is DO NOT DO GHD situps in this Workout. Do regular situps.

Read comment #18 by bingo, and trust me, I'm young and was already in shape when I started CrossFit. My trainer only let me do 8 the very first time I did them... My abs were sore for 3 days.

So you do not want to do 100 if you have never done them. Start with 5 to 10 tomorrow (again, trust me) if you want. After the soreness goes away (around Sunday or Monday depending on the strength of your abs and hip flexors) then do 10 to 15, and so on for a few weeks until you can do 20 to 30 as part of a warm-up without any difficulty.

Only after you can do 20 to 30 as part of a warm-up (read: not for time) and not be sore for 3 days should you start doing GHDs during timed workouts.

Comment #36 - Posted by: PVB at January 12, 2011 8:55 PM

To all you newbies out there. And even the people new to crossfit that think they have the strongest cores in the world.

DO NOT DO GHD SITUPS. Just do regular situps or crunches.

I AGREE WHOLE-HEARTEDLY!

The worst thing about yesterday's blog was the 700+ comments, only a fraction of which related to the actual WOD! >:-O

I do think however, that HQ should do an experiment, if that's not what they are doing already, and increase the occurrence of nudity, maybe even the "quality" and see if the number of comments goes down or up. I mean how long could people keep saying the same stuff? It would be an example of adaptation. We talk about physical adaptation and that's why we use constant variability. I think it's great what HQ has done. They have challenged us physically, mentally, psychologically, and visually. For how many blog posts do we see one of the following: 1)L1 cert pics, 2) someone doing a handstand (in snow, water, sand, mountain, montage, etc, 3) a soldier either head shot or hanging from a tank, turret or other cannon or OHS-ing a rifle, and/or 4) a person OHS-ins or Turkish getup-ing (Word?) another human being? A lot. So the nudity thing is forcig us to deal with our mainsite adaptation. It's visual, not muscle, confusion. That was the lamest interpretation ever, i know.

Hey Bingo - great post. HQ sure is keeping you on your toes! ;-) I also have to reiterate bingo and others' comments about the GHD, I had one athlete that after doing them, because he was "fit enough", but had never done them before, could not get out of bed the next morning and missed a jiu jitsu match.

Correct me if I am wrong, but my dietary "regimen" assumes that our paleolithic ancestors consumed 1-2 pints of fermented beverages each day. I think they probably had a fondness of Guinness and India Pale Ales?

Subbed situps (with legs flat like a butterfly) for GHD SUs.

135# push jerk - Form is lacking, ended up with a good number of them looking more like push presses.

~9 minutes (failed to stop stopwatch). Good WOD but frustrated I couldn't nail the push jerk form.

If you dont have a GHD machine, try using the lat pull down machine.

I know this isn't ideal but set the holder firmly against your quads, position your feet somewhere (other than the weights, you'll break the machine if you press too hard on the stacked weights) and do situps.

2 problems (that i know of):
1. I have to frequently readjust my position b/c the holder on your quad rolls you around potentially flipping you over if you move downward too quickly
2. Not enough negative range on the downward motion.

Thoughts? Suggestions?

He said I'm squatting wrong: too deep and too far back on my heels. My knees and back are so screwed up that I'm going to listen to him for awhile.

Great job Carole, Kevin and MajorDad. Thanks bingo.

yesterday, when a controversial photo was posted on a non-rest day, 824 comments, very few of which were about the WOD or even fitness related- most were either complaining about the photo or complaining about people who complained about the photo

Gmoney:

If you are a de-conditioned athlete or new to CrossFit or both, you should in particular be on the watch for:

Strange urine color like dark or red or cola-color.
General weakness.
Muscles stiffness or aching or pain, which you seem to have already described.

At this point you should consider an err on the side of caution and visit your local ER or Urgent Care center and tell them exactly what you did.

Great WOD, I like that the Crossfit warm up is becoming truly just a warm-up for me.

Times are still a little slow, but I'm feeling SO MUCH more capable.

squat rack safety rail was just the perfect height to slide a bench under it perpendicular, and use the frame of the rack as a foothold. tops of my feet still hurt from being uncushioned, but whatev, I figured out ghd at gold's gym! woo woo!

Push Jerks morphed into split jerk with fatigue. Somehow they just seemed easier. Easier to balance maybe?

Push jerk unbroken in all 5 rounds. I had planned to go heavier but tweaked my right shoulder during the warm up. So I figured I'd better take it easy on the load (wasn't that easy). Next time I'll try 65 or 70 kg.

Maybe a tad aggressive on the push jerk weight; those got heavy fast. First round unbroken, in other rounds got the first 3 before breaking. Stabilizing the weight overhead was tough after GHDs destroyed the core. Tried to do all of these as push jerks, but I think a couple split jerks snuck in there.

I used 135 lbs, in about 14:30
I did this but the fact that the GHD area and the weight are separated by a floor and about 150 yards was a challenge in itself. I just jogged from station to station and did the work.
My time was approximate at best.
