I'm so glad there has been a distinction made on this classic CrossFit move. If it's knees to elbows, know where your elbows are.

First attempt... I did it, yay!!! =D

Filthy Fifty:
50 Box jump, 24 inch box
50 Jumping pull-ups
50 Kettlebell swings, 1 pood (16.5kg dumbbell swings)
...Walking Lunge, 50 steps
50 Knees to elbows
50 Push press, 45 pounds (21kg - 46.2#)
50 Back extensions
50 Wall ball shots, 20 pound ball (18.5kg thrusters - 40.7#)
50 Burpees
50 Double unders

In 51:40... I thought I was gonna break 50 minutes but I lost my stride in the double unders and wasn't stringing together more than 1 for a few sets until I managed to get it back together...

The Burpees and jumping pull-ups were probably the most time-consuming, when I got to burpee #7 I thought I was going to keel over, but then saw I was still <35 minutes and thought "No way I'm giving up!"

Box Jumps= pretty much straight through unless odd unbalance
Jumping pullups= breks taken when unable to pull, pretty good
Kb swings= probably could do it all the way through but took breaks at 30 rep to save grip for k2e
walking lunge= good
k2e= a lot of missed reps try to kip harder
pushpress= good range of motion taqke less breaks? i dunno
back extension= same
wallball= first break at rep ten try for rep 15 all reps 5 after
burpees= always the worst just try to go through as fast as possible
double unders. first break at 20 due to death. try for 30

Sometimes I get so frustrated because it takes me twice as long to complete these WODs as the featured athletes movies.

But after watching Heather Bergeron and Mel Ockerby on today's WOD, I feel much better.

From now on, all my jumping pull-ups will be consided complete when my head is 2 inches away from the bottom of the bar.

For burpees, instead of jumping in the air as high as I can, I'll just wave my arms in the air while keeping my heels on the ground. , and consider that a jump.

Hey Crossfit - why don't you pick videos that inspire us to do better, not make us want to work less hard?!

This WOD is special to us. A few weeks after starting to do CF with the ashram older boys we did this WOD on my 50th birthday. It was the first WOD where the all others in the ashram started to get interested in Crossfit. I will never forget the younger children coming out and counting reps with us. Re: comment 11, Brendan-

I personally think bending the elbows during a knee to elbow is not Rx'd. It may not be considered "cheating" in the sense that the person doing it may not realize what they're doing. What it does is shorten the range of motion.

Consider the start of a KTE with arms fully extended, dead hang, hips open, etc. There is a certain distance between the elbows and knees which must be covered. Pulling the elbows "down" which is effectively what bending the elbows during the move is shortens that distance, thus less has to be traveling by bringing the knees up. Does it get the work done? Yes. It is in the "spirit" of what I think the move is intended to be (primarily an ab/hip flexor exercise, not necessarily a modified pull up or chin up)? No.

Having done both versions many times I can say that elbows straight through the entire move is much harder. The knees move through a greater range of motion.

Comment #46 - Posted by: leon at December 10, 2010 5:50 AM

The problem with many of these vids is the lack of an active "coach" during the workout; someone with the nads to call out bad reps, a 4' wide stance during burpees or ridiculously bent elbows during "swings." True, form will break down during the intensity but that is exactly why a third party needs to be there to correct or even stop somone when the reps get downright stupid. Maybe these folks are the Big Dawgs at their gym, but if they maintain a healthy culture there, SOMEONE present should feel comfortable calling out the crap.

Comment #54 - Posted by: Juli at December 10, 2010 6:25 AM

Ali, regarding what is the Rx'd weight for women. The filthy fifty is a benchmark workout. as with all benchmark workouts, there is technically no men and women weight. Fran, Dianne, Grace, all of these have 1 Rx'd weight. you will notice that all the women will put their weight in ( ). the reason is that there is no such thing as a woman's weight, it is a scaled weight. I'm not ignorant on the fact that women are not as proportionally strong as men, but there is no such thing as women's weight, they are scaled weights. There was an article a while back in the CF Journal regarding this. So , if a woman does a lesser weight, it is not Rx'd.

I have to disagree. In my gym there is women's weight and men's weight. Fran is 95/65, Grace 135/95, diane 225/185.

It's a big accomplishment for a lot of women to reach "women's Rx:d". I'd never wan't to take that away from them. I will ALWAYS put Rx:d next to any girls name that has used women's weight.

I don't know why you would feel the need to try to take that away from us.

The ROM violations on some of these videos is questionable. On Burpees, aren't we supposed to coach that not coming vertical or the "I'm moving fast clap behind the head" doesn't count? Also on K2E's pulling the elbows in shortens the movement! I'd much rather see a 1 min slower time with better form so that I can tell my clients, "check this performance out--see, you CAN have good work capacity without sacrificing ROM! Isn't that what is taught at Level 1?

I've been watching these vids for years now, so have those who are now posting vids and comments. So there is no dang reason for any total slop technique to EVER show up on a vid these days! If you do the Filthy Fifty and record it, watch it before you post. If you see all kinds of slop, then don't post the video! Use it as a teaching tool to improve your performance NEXT time, then post a clean vid of good reps and respectable, LEGITIMATE finishing time. There is no need to post something you KNOW is going to garner critique, which then garners accusations of "haters", which garners defense of ...

Elite IS as Elite DOES. Not as Elite Tries or Intends.

And while we're at it, a burpee at the bottom should look somewhat like a PROPER pushup; Nothing should touch the floor but the hands, feet and chest. I don't care what the CF "standards" are; If the whole body just flops on the ground, it is crap.

My first "Filthy Fifty"! Thats was nuts. I only did 25 burpees b/c I couldn't push myself up anymore... Its amazing after how many WOD's I end up saying I've never been that exhausted, but I've never been that exhaused!!!

Wonderful effort by the two gals in the demo WOD video today.
However, most concerned about poor form on nearly all movements! Seems that "fast" times are becoming or over-taking proper form.
When comparing times and competing it matters!

This was my first CrossFit WOD on April 14, 2010. I scaled to 20 reps of everything and only 15# DBs for the push presses and as a sub for the wall balls with thrusters. I didn't complete the burpees or double unders (I was gonna sub tuck jumps).

Can't wait to try this one again and complete it.

I don't understand all this talk about form. The videos I watched everything was pretty decent.

K2E with an arm bend just burns your arms more... the work is still there? This is the exact same conversation as kipping pullups. If they write strict K2E then you can complain.

It's the same with the Burpees... its my belief that you go down, you make contact chest to ground, you stand back up, straighten out, leave the ground and touch your hands behind your head. Boom, 1 rep... No matter which way you go down and which way you go up the total work is the same. It might be loaded on different muscles but who gives a crap. Go back to isolation moves if you don't want to utilize the effort of your whole body to maximize intensity.

In your training you should be striving for both max intensity and good form. In nearly all workouts, oly days aside, there will be a balance. If you're not trying to ride that line one way or the other day in and day out then I don't know what you are doing.

I'd first like to say that all the videos are extremely impressive. The times being achieved by these athletes are insane. However, I must agree with some of the criticism of form. My biggest confusion with this community is how defensive people get when their heroes are criticized for something. Why does it bother you so much when someone calls out a bad burpee? Does a basketball team get 2 points every time they TRY to score, or does the ball actually need to go in the net? Our sport is timed one, intensity will eventually hurt form, but we don’t need to get bent out of shape because someone calls out a bad rep!

Some of ya'll get pretty fired up about what you view as violations of form. If your such a stickler for form, submit your videos. It would be great to see some everyday folks busting out a WOD, so that an largely anonymous forum of users could bash your technique and tell you what a slacker of a crossfitter you are. In all of the events I have seen (games, sectionals, etc) the judging is up to par. If folks are sacrificing form for speed in everyday WOD's then it's likely reps will be taken away at a judged event . The whole my time is slower but my form is better argument is petty. You don't have to watch the videos and HQ doesn't have to post them for free. If I remember correctly we do this to stay/get in great shape, but mostly we do it because it's fun, lets not forget that at the end of the day were just a bunch of adults pushing our bodies and moving weight around

On the form debate: cut the athletes some slack and give them an "atta boy" for taking the time to film and send the videos in. Be constructive if you must criticize. The athletes aren't responsible for posting them to the website anyway. CrossFit has always been, at its core, a competition with yourself and the possible unknown event. It's all over the foundational literature - firefighters, LEO, military, etc. Last time I had to get up from the ground with a rucksack on my back, I was not concerned with the plank position on my way up! Life is your ultimate judge, not a semi-anonymous post on a workout site.

If you don't like the way video demonstrates a burpee, do them your way. Log it, keep track, repeat and have enough common sense to know the difference between yours and theirs. Revel in your superiority if you must. If you have been around CF for a while you will know the mainsite makes very few claims or gives very little guidance (insert good trainer here). I am going out on a limb and guess that is very intentional. One piece of guidance the WOD does give, however, is "post TIME to comments" so I guess we all don't do things as RX'd!

#86 T - As I'm one of maybe two or three people responding positively to the video and not critiquing form I'll respond to your comment directly..

I rewatched the heather/mel video, which seemed to draw the most criticism, and I only saw one missed rep and it was from mel on the jumping pullups. For all I know she didn't count it because she stopped immediately to regain composure. On the burpees it was more difficult to judge from the video but it looked to me that heather left the ground with each rep. Not gorgeous ones by any means but where can you call failed rep? As far as I know there are no stance regulations for a burpee.. but then I've never seen a book of regulations for any of these arbitrary movements we term an exercise.. despite sincerely asking for links to one, or asking that one be made for competitive training reasons...

Your sports analogy... I just don't understand it. This is crossfit..fit..fitness. Not a sport. Maybe at the games, maybe then its a 'sport', but in that gym its exercise. These are two friends at a gym who work hard and give people something to watch. One person commenting on the burpees being weak is cool, and that's fine, they were weak, but when ten people have to jump on the bandwagon I start to wonder why everyone is so excited at the chance to say something negative? It's been said, leave it alone. What I see is not a group of people concerned about form and exercise, I see jealousy.

To the people all popping up saying, my clients watch this etc etc. Then give your clients something better to watch. I'm not being sarcastic I mean that sincerely. Someone working hard as crap right next to you is ten times more motivating then pixels bouncing around a screen. And since when is it Heather Bergeron's job to motivate/inspire your clients? If you demand strict form then demand it. Personally, I like when people ride the line between intensity and form, in the body weight realm, because I feel its working from two different avenues to reach the same goal. Some days you go strict some days you go so hard that things fall apart a little. Not to a great degree, but easily to a degree displayed in the video. But everyone still knows that when its test day its test day and forms need to be perfect. But the every day workouts are practice... and you can't practice without making mistakes. Or else you wouldn't call it practice.

As an aside, I hate it when people call crossfit a sport. This is my own opinion, and I realize I'm no expert on the subject, but sport to me has always been a struggle between two competitors, not one competitor and a bar. A sport is socially nuanced, and what your competitor does directly relates to what you have to do. It's a dance really. In true sport a competitor has the ability to study your game, find your weakness, adapt, and just drive you into the ground. In crossfit the workout is what reveals your weaknesses. In this way the battle of wits is removed from crossfit.

Maybe I'm wrong, but in my definition of sport you have to know your opponents to the same degree that you know yourself, if not more so. It makes it far more complicated, far more intriguing, and far more rewarding.

Comment #112 - Posted by: adamk at December 10, 2010 11:49 AM

@ Boog -

I mostly agree with you regarding form, except your statement about the kettlebell swings. If you have been doing crossfit for years and your swings are still straight armed the entire time, then your form hasn't really progressed much. Technically, in the KBell swing, your arms only have to be straight at the bottom and top of the swing. As you get stronger, you essentially perform a two armed "snatch" (for lack of a better term) the kettlebell from under the hips to overhead. This is what is taught in KBell training. Because the Kbell floats with momentum from the hips to overhead and there is no tension, you can relax the arms and bend the elbows, until the Kbell reaches the locked out pt overhead. Hell, if you can generate enough power the Kbell will pull your arms straight at the top. For efficiency's sake, just use enough power to pop the Kbell up to the exact spot where you would be at full extension. The full straight armed swing is for noobs.

Thanks for the response Adam. For the record, I agree with you about the videos. My point was that I don't see a problem when people criticize constructively and I can't figure out why it makes people so mad. Whether we like it or not this site is the starting point for all things crossfit and the videos should demonstrate the best form possible.
As for the sport debate, you’ve brought up a perfectly valid argument. I was just using sport as an analogy to explain my point about proper execution. However I must say, these athletes we are watching are sponsored and compete. To me it is just exercise; to the elite crossfitters this is very much a sport.

WOD #11. For time:
50 box jumps, 24 inch box
50 jumping pullups (how much knee bend should there be?)
50 DB swings, 35 lbs.
50 walking lunges (is it two "strides" = one "step"? Like, L-R 1, L-R 2, L-R 3, etc. or is it L1, R2, L3, R4, etc.?)
50 knee raises (don't have K2E yet)
50 push press, 45 lbs.
50 back extentions
63 wall balls, 16.1 lb. ball (same weight moved?)
50 burpees
50 double unders

WOD time - 57:50

Majorly segmented, rests between exercises, but got it done. I almost ran away while I was standing in front of the 24 inch box but started jumping instead. Feeling pretty good about myself right now.

Burpees killed my time, coming into them around 17:30+/- ... took me 5 sets of 10 burpees.

We need try this WOD backwards sometime, would it skim some time to get the burpees and wall-ball(s) out of the way early??? (I know, it wouldn't be RX'd, but would be a good variation.)

Prove thy servants, I beseech thee, ten days; and let them give us pulse to eat, and water to drink.

And at the end of ten days their countenances appeared fairer and fatter than all the children which did eat the portion of the king's meat.

Damn, a lot of negative posts. I appreciate the motivation you people who share vids give me, thank you. You get me fired up. I did a fake filthy, subbing crunches (deep ones) for k2es and subbing 150 single-unders for dus. I still felt great about doing it in a little over 27, including walking around gym a lot to get from one exercise to another. I really need to just get a real jump rope and start practicing dus. Oh, and actually do k2es, instead of avoiding them.

Adam K,

your reply was spot on until you got to the sport section. CrossFit is both a modality and then a sport. For the competitors that is why they apply standards to the exercises... just like weightlifting, golf, gymnastics, etc. etc. You are right about not needing to hit the "standards" to obtain tremendous training effect but a lot of crossfit is also about seeking constant improvements and that would mean for these people to both obtain incredible intensities while maintaining the form one might see in the games.

Big, big kudos to anyone willing to post their videos on the web with the hopes that it can motivate and help someone... great job guys.

-Bryan St. Andrews

Comment #196 - Posted by: Bryan St. Andrews at December 10, 2010 9:26 PM

The posted timed vids are awesome because they demonstrate the most critical variable of the crossfit WOD: intensity. However, if you change the workout(kip the KTE, Flop the burpee) then note it. No big deal, it just gives everyone doing the WOD an idea of how you have changed the baseline. I challenge anyone to try regular KtoE and six point burpees on the 50 (as it was originally intended); to break 23 minutes.

Discovered crossfit and this site 9 weeks ago, allready did all kinds of sports but now i think i found what i was looking for :-)

50 Box jump, 40 cm : OK
50 Jumping pull-ups : had to break in 25-10-8-7
50 Kettlebell swings: had to do it with 16 kg dumbell: had to break in 25 -25
Walking Lunge: OK
50 Knees to elbows: break 15-15-12-8
50 Push press, 20kg: break 25-15-10-10
50 Back extensions: break 30-20

I had to stop there because i had to
a. recover because i was going to pass out
b. hadn't time left, I had to go back to work (i'm doing this during lunch break)

total time was 33:25

I always do the 'official' crossfit warm-ups, but is there also a official 'cooling down' ?

I'm taking a hot shower for at least 15 minutes , doing a walk and take some whey protein shake after, but the days after i'm always way too sore, sometime i feel like a crippeld old men :-)
any suggestions??

Ben, Brussels, Belgium

Didn't finish. Stopped at around 33 min after first 10 burpees. Stomach pains and getting over nasty cold this morning. Thought this would be a good cure - but was getting dizzy, light-headed and just out of gas, so I called it a day. Next time . . .
