Dave L., nice bench press hump. One of the Hump Series!! LOL.

Comment #1 - Posted by: Ben at December 3, 2010 5:11 PM

Cool! In January I called this CFT-2. One way to think about this is as another CFT. I described how one might approach it in post #23 in the "compare to" link. Any time we've done a WOD before the "compare to" is a significant resource.

Very nice cycle, Tony. Thanks.

Comment #2 - Posted by: bingo at December 3, 2010 5:13 PM

Why didn't James go heavier on the squat clean, seems like his max would be north of 285.

Comment #3 - Posted by: Paul at December 3, 2010 5:17 PM

Shocked Hobart only benched 245.

Comment #4 - Posted by: Boston Ben at December 3, 2010 5:20 PM

James - great arm wrestling - is there anything you can;t do?

Comment #5 - Posted by: Tracy at December 3, 2010 5:25 PM

James Hobart is concrete proof that bench press means nothing. He is so much stronger than me its absurd, yet I out bench him by a lot.

Comment #6 - Posted by: patrick l bateman at December 3, 2010 6:03 PM

Just to be sure, we're supposed to work up to 1RM for each of these, correct? The vid shows each at the max rep, but I just wanted to double check.
I'm stoked about this one, since I did the one back in jan and I think I've gotten stronger... i guess we will see tomorrow in my garage.

Comment #7 - Posted by: Steven M. Platek, Ph.D. at December 3, 2010 6:06 PM

how much did Camille do? =)

Comment #8 - Posted by: PPSP at December 3, 2010 7:03 PM

#7 yeah you have to work up to 1RM, I think it's explained in the FAQ of the website. Anyway doing a 1RM without warming up could be very dangerous, and you would get a crappy score

Comment #9 - Posted by: PPSP at December 3, 2010 7:06 PM

James, nice depth on the OHS... show people what proper depth is since it seems to be lacking on some.

Austin - you make me wonder... who IS the pound-for-pound strongest person in CF?

Comment #10 - Posted by: theburch at December 3, 2010 7:32 PM

It's ridiculous to say that an exercise is meaningless because of the efforts of someone is excels at other aspects of fitness. It is a full range compund exercise that involves multiple muscle groups. Maybe he isn't that goos at it because the 'Fit neglects the exercise.....beyond that it is a perfectly viable exercise.

Comment #11 - Posted by: Eric the Red at December 3, 2010 7:49 PM

I guess I should watch the videos first before I post because now it is clear why Hobart did less than some would expect: he does the exercise correctly with no bar bounce and no hips lifting off the bench. Malleolo's REAL bench weight is probably 275. Not trying to hate, just pointing out why their other two lifts are evenly matched and why the bench is so differenct....

Comment #12 - Posted by: Eric the Red at December 3, 2010 7:57 PM

Bathing DAILY?!? Ha! I wouldn't dream of it!

I was really pleased with my cleans. Did very close-grip (proper) grip bench which might be why that was lower and am just perpetually stuck at 175 OHS! The OHS is annoying, and was killing me after the other two exercises! It's great to see progress! Thanks CrossFIT!

1 year ago, approximately the time I started regularly posting to the main site I'd have never believed I could clean over 200lbs or OHS over 135. Thank you!!!! Crossfit has truly rehabilitated me!

Comment #43 - Posted by: Jay at December 4, 2010 10:31 AM

While a strong bench isn't indicative of overall strength, fitness, flexibility etc., it's a lift that most people have to work at to become proficient at. That is why "Whatcha bench?" is a common refrain at many gyms. The idea behind Cross-fit was to be all inclusive of effective methods of exercise. Bench is a free-weight multiple-joint movement and therefore (when performed properly) is a highly beneficial lift for developing upper body strength. Of course, development should be symmetrical from a push-pull standpoint as well as left and right.

Comment #44 - Posted by: Steve at December 4, 2010 10:36 AM

if you don't like the bench as a lift there's a good chance you suck at it. just like how some people don't like to squat or clean or deadlift or whatever. you listen to all these reasons people have for not doing certain movements and 99% of them are bullsh*t. everytime someone tells me they don't like a lift sure enough it is a lift they are not strong at. so instead of making lame excuses why a certain exercise is not "functional" (the dumbest most overused term in fitness), man up learn how to do it properly, put time and effort into it and excel at it. the bench press is a great lift. if all your lifts are great but your bench is weak than you are weak. just like if all your lifts are great but your squat, or deadlift, or clean, or press, or snatch is weak than you are still weak. you are only as strong as your weakest link. instead of avoiding your weakness attack it, be relentless, make it a strength.

Comment #45 - Posted by: aj at December 4, 2010 10:42 AM

Bench press is functional very important to be able to lift opponents off you in Mma, bjj and wrestling!

and reps with 155. I would have loved to knock out a new Overhead Squat record, but I had to have a little reality check. I was dreading this lift, my 185 last time was a lucky catch, and it was too difficult getting in the groove today - the same way it was last time. Today it was reps with 155 and 135 to start slaying this goat once and for all.

Ugh! The OHS at 185 was a bit shallow (right at parallel) so I'm not very happy with it. Both the BP and the OHS are weaknesses, so it's nice to see progress.

In regards to the ideal bodyweight: its plain and simple, you have to find your specific balance of power, speed, endurance, and coordination.

Another crucial point that is often missed is height vs. body weight. Work is defined by moving (by force) a given object (weight) a certain displacement (distance). If you are taller, you will ALWAYS be moving the prescribed weight further than a shorter person. Overall, you will be doing more work in the same WOD as a shorter person.

Next point necessary to understand is body weight when lifting weights. People love to talk about how these small guys can move so much weight for their body weight and not to take anything away from them, but 1) look at how far they have to move the weight, and 2) look at how their center of gravity supports the weight closer to their body. We all know the example of holding a weight close to your body vs further away.

All this said, nothing should be taken away from the amazing achievements of these individuals, regardless of size. Just keep simple physics in mind when you want to consider ideal sizes, body weight, work capacity, etc. There is a reason why most of the top CF are built the way they are.

question: what kind of warmup is done prior to doing these three lifts? looks like the post above had the lifter holding 300# in an overhead squat. post #43 says the lifter did the same w/ 400#. that is an insane amount of weight to do an overhead squat with...is this for real? as a chemical-free lifter I find it hard to believe.

Had 245 on the clean - caught it, stood 3/4 way up and got stuck and had to bail.
