Love that pic!

Tried a workout of my own creation today, needed something shorter an brutal. It's a brutal form of Helen, however it didn't end up being as short as I wanted. Fun anyway though.
3 rounds for time:
200m sandbag run (50# bag)
21 KB Swing (2 pood)
12 Muscle ups

It was worse than I expected it. Did it in 16:45.
I'd love to see some crazy guy like Mikko or Rob do it sub 9. Or Karianne or Kristen could do it an probably just as easily beat me.

Is an axel clean different than any other clean? His hand placement seems a little off.

Comment #3 - Posted by: josh at November 30, 2010 5:14 PM

It's a fat bar. Not necessarily different in essence. But, the girth of the bar calls for modifications and adaptation to the movement to get it up off the ground.

Check out Rob O or Curtis Bowler's strongman stuff in the CrossFit Journal. It's much different. Because you can't grip the entire axel a conventional grip isn't strong enough and a hook grip is physically impossible. It's pretty cool stuff to check out.

Sweet wheels.

Comment #6 - Posted by: CrossFit North County at November 30, 2010 5:20 PM

I might be an idiot, but how is he going to clean that with an underhand grip? I just don't understand how he is going to rack the bar.

Comment #7 - Posted by: what at November 30, 2010 5:33 PM

#7 I had the same problem understanding but after watching a few videos I understand it now. It's basically a mixed grip deadlift as high as possible and than changing that underhand grip and finishing the clean. I hope this gives an idea.

Comment #8 - Posted by: josh at November 30, 2010 5:36 PM

The axle can be cleaned like a barbell if you have ENORMOUS fingers but for us regular folks you can use a method called the "continental" clean. Check it out here--

Axles rule. I've been using them for years and they help ALL of my regular lifts. Enjoy.

Really enjoyed the Crossfit Southie video, it's interesting to hear what it takes for an affiliate to start up. Looks like you've got an awesome box there, congrats guys!

Comment #11 - Posted by: Rob Orlando at November 30, 2010 5:39 PM

Ok those videos are insane. He seemingly holds the bar in mid air. Pure insanity.

Comment #12 - Posted by: what at November 30, 2010 5:45 PM

Also noteworthy is the fact that the big f-ing axle his holding, it doesn't spin like your normal oly bars.

Comment #13 - Posted by: Mowgli at November 30, 2010 5:47 PM

Never thought I would see a Bukowski quote here. Very cool.

last photo of the second Wired article-Somali pirates holding French hostages-really speaks deeply to me at this point in my life.

since i was a little kid, i wanted to be a US marine. though, i was medically DQed from american military service, i'm still eligible for the French Foreign Legion. it's my understanding that they are elite troops but with a mixed reputation, with a penchant for brutality and crime abroad and at home. however, i also know that they were instrumental in the (mostly) successful rescue of those hostages in the photo. And, to be honest, ocean battles with Somali pirates just has a romantic ring to it. However, i also realize that those Somalis were probably driven to piracy because of greater problems in their nation, society, and culture, and maybe volunteering myself to be the muscle for a Western political entity is not the best way to do the most good for the most people.

i know the crossfit comment board seems a strange place to solicit opinions, but as many military and para-military crossfitters there are across national and continental boundaries, i figure its worth a shot.

thoughts on the Foreign Legion, military service in general, or Westerner's guilt over the vestiges of the white man's burden?

Anyone knows what kind of kicks he is wearing? Look like Nikes...

Comment #16 - Posted by: TJBag at November 30, 2010 8:19 PM

Look at his hands, he's not "cleaning" the bar he's doing a bicep curl.

Comment #17 - Posted by: Rick at November 30, 2010 8:23 PM

Badass pic. Looks freakin tough. Ill have to try grace like that. Props to Pusch

They can have the AK. I'll keep my AR, thanks.
Love that axel clean. Rob O is right on; unless you're Phil Pfister you're lucky to even get that thing off the ground with a double overhand grip.

If you are medically DQ'd from US military entry, you will have a hard time getting into the FFL. During recruitment, they are very fussy. If anything is slightly suspect, you are gone. They now reject 90-95% of all applicants. The Legion is just part of the French military. Also, there is nothing particularly romantic about being in the legion.

Comment #20 - Posted by: Legio Patria Nostra at November 30, 2010 11:03 PM

The clean the guy is doing is called a Continental Clean, as Rob O. Mentioned. It's actually a pretty fun move, and almost necessary to clean heavy weight with an axel unless you have extra long fingers or the grip strength of a gorilla.

Rob O. runs a strongman seminar which is absolutely amazing. You learn things like the continental clean, how to shoulder stones, flip tires and use the strongman log. In my opinion, there's nothing better to build strength than the strongman stuff. It's helped me improve my deadlift by 50#'s in just a couple months (doing it one or two days a week) and jumped my clean up by 30#'s in the same timeframe. Check out his site www.hybridathletics.net for seminar information. There aren't too many at the moment, but if you want to host one at your box you can talk with him. It's one of the best "certs" out there!

At some point the human body reaches its limit.

After that, form goes out the window.

The human body can only do so much.

Hi...looking into a personal training certification...wondering if there are any thoughts on which program best complements Crossfit? NSCA appears to be "the best" cert...true? Thx much.

I'm looking for a good WOD to do today that doesn't put a lot of stress on the feet. I strained my peroneal tendon trail running the other day, and need to give her a little rest. Thanks.

At some point Jose Carnish reaches his limit.

After that, he really has to blog about it.

Comment #28 - Posted by: Jordan D. at December 1, 2010 2:21 PM

@ #27:

When you say "doesn't put a lot of stress on the feet," do you mean like a low-impact WOD? If so, give "Karen" a try.

150 wall ball throws
10'/20# med ball for men
8'/12# med ball for women

Simple, short, and very, very brutal :^)

Not sure if I'm going to be around the gym for a workout tomorrow so I ran an easy 30 minutes today. Not because I chose it to be easy, it HAD to be easy! Wow, were the hips, quads and back barking today after the hero WOD yesterday.
