Is there a difference between push press and shoulder press? We did shoulder press on 9/23....
Great cert, learned a ton and had a great experience....can't wait to apply it all.

#2 On a shoulder press your leg should not move at all, on a push press, you must make a small dip and drive (like when jerking), by keeping your chest up, but you don't go under the bar after, you press it up.
Fantastic timing! There was a BS article in the NYT Magazine today about fitness, how some people fail to gain any fitness with an exercise program. I'll try to find an ungated link. Suffice it to say that two key aspects of fitness were glaringly absent:
1) a definition of fitness
2) a real exercise program
WCABTMD covers #1. There are many exercise programs that would cover #2, many that would shame the investigators. Crossfit just happens to be the best.

The tip on being aggressive from the WOD demo really helped on this one, especially after missing the first rep on two of those sets.
@Cheese N' Casey: Start with elevating your feet on a box or bench while doing pushups, and continue to raise the elevation height as you progress. As the elevation goes up, you get closer to a HSPU. You can also try full vertical HSPU with less range of motion and slowly work up to getting your head to the ground. A combination of those two worked really well for me. The most important thing is to keep working on them!

cert at atlas was horrible: parking was 14 bucks each day out of pocket, no lockers for us, no drink and stink (we totally got ripped off), no desks to write on, room was too small to accommodate all of us, only 4 bathroom stalls for everyone, just to name a few. my friend got his cert at cpd last year and totally loved the facilities!
I love the CF training methodology and community....always will. I also believe that the core philosophy of "constantly varied......" is unmatched by any other fitness program.
I also acknowledge the great vision, passion and desire to continually improve / develop CF that is evident in Glassman and his inner circle of colleagues....they have made CF what it is today.
BUT....I do not believe that any 'CF science' will ever be truly recognised as such by the broader scientific community. As with the self-proclaimed 'worlds fittest' games, much of what gets done (in application and in theory) within CF is not supported by science at all.
I hope that this study and ongoing development of a scientific research direction within CF changes that and delivers some legitimate results to back up the many claims that CF so proudly boasts.
BTW.....quality of life = 'work capacity across broad....."? C'mon Coach....CF is a lifestyle that rewards people in many ways, but lets not get ahead of ourselves.
The Level 1 Cert at 'Norn Iron' was by far the most magical way for us to say goodbye to the box.

I'm not sure what the CrossFit community in Southern Illinois looks like. But would anyone that reads this be interested in an affiliate in or around the Waterloo area? Or does anyone know people that are CrossFitting in that area?
Cert in Texas was awesome. Great energy and enthusiasm. Coaches were terrific in their instruction and willingness to help.
Amazing cert in Park City. We had amazing trainers! Thanks Chris, Eric, Miranda, Tyson & Tommy for all the information and help. I think it will take me at least a year to absorb and apply everything I learned. Congrats to everyone who participated. It was a fun group.

Tough mudder 12-miler in Englishtown NJ this past Saturday. Done and done. I actually started CrossFit several months ago mainly to get ready for this race. It definitely paid off; breezed through all obstacles and even got a decent time (despite hardly ever running for distance during my training). The race may be done now, but I'm not done with CrossFit. It's back to the WODs tomorrow...
Had an amazing time at the Park City cert this weekend. So awesome to spend some time with some CrossFit Elite, and really inspirational to watch Eric workout during lunch (had to leave before the others started). Can't wait to get back in the gym and up my intensity using what I've learned.

Why did you attend a Level 1 CrossFit certification? My guess is that 99% of attendees all across the world this weekend came because of their passion for CrossFit and their desire to learn, either for themselves or to be a better coach and teacher. I think anyone of us would take education, experience and learning over amenities offered. The trainers that HQ sent to teach you and the material that was presented should have been your main concern. They did a fantastic job and deserve appreciation for their teaching, enthusiasm and the attention given to each and everyone of you. You should take a good hard look at your motives for being involved in this community if these are the things that concern you.

165 was my best; I got a pair of singles with 175, but I wonder if those 72 push presses in 'Collin' yesterday trimmed a few reps off today's top end.
Otherwise, I stuck with 155 for the duration for good, hard, honest sets. (bdywt.- 170 lbs.)

I have to agree with Jennifer...the comment you made is one of the reasons I love CrossFit. No BS, no extra fluff, just good technique and hard work! If you're so worried about fancy locker rooms and extras, there is a nice LA Fitness nearby. Everyone at Atlas was very welcoming and helpful throughout the weekend, and the trainers knew their sh*t...the whole experience more than exceeded any expectations that I had and solidified my belief that CrossFit is the best thing out there!

Finished with 12 100's on the football field at my high school. Been admiring this community from afar for some time now and figured it was time to give it a shot. Psyched for more tomorrow!
Excellent Level 1 Cert. at Crossfit NI. All staff were friendly, approachable and delivered the material really well. Special mention to Todd for his nutrition lecturer. Simple and effective approach, trying not to complicate the topic (which many people seem to do.) My nickname for my first child will be 'the dude.'

Level 1 cert at Atlas in Chicago was great. The instructors did a fantastic job..they were knowledgable, informative, personable and funny. I thought the facility was really nice too...plenty big enough for the group. Although, it would have been nice to have a smaller group (less than 60) but breaking up into small groups helped. I read the article you posted. It is obvious that Wells has not done adequate research, especially when it pertains to his comments on this program specifically. Anyone who has been training with this program correctly will realize that Wells does not know what he is talking about.
For instance, he asks the question, " If you are always doing something different, how can you know if you are improving?"
Crossfiters do many different things, but we have bench mark workouts, as well as standard lifts that pop-up numerous times throughout the training regimen.
He also goes on to say something like, this way of training is a gimmick, and that people end up weaker. Let me dig into my personal archives to prove this wrong:

Jennifer, you obviously have a vested interest in that your owner of Atlas CF. Therefore, I can understand you don't appreciate any sort of criticism. And the crossfit community is great in that we want to learn and educate ourselves to be better athletes, trainers, etc. under the tutelage of good teachers. However. . .
Crossfit is also a business, and when you are charging $1K/per for a level 1 cert, a certain level of professional amenities is expected. Free parking (or at least notification of costs), water, and a place to stash your gym bag. Classroom lectures should have classroom facilities (desks or tables?). Maybe you bit off more than you could chew, and need to limit the cert size next time.
Since I started Crossfit I have seen improvment in areas I have never been able to really get an edge on and my strength has increased at suprising rates, I ahven't had gains like this since High School. Although I dont always have the time to do the WOD and using the University gym here at App State doesn't always offer the necessary equipment, I still have NO complaints. I LOVE crossfit. This is the challangew I have been looking for!!!

Regarding the certs, I had thought about it but was shocked by the $1,000 price tag for a weekend. I paid myself through a private education to get my engineering degree and have no problem with exchanging money for knowledge but I thought the price was very high and if the amenities were sub-par, I would be pissed too. That being said, the classes must in general be completely awesome because the bottom line is they sell out all the time. There is so much good and free information out there, plus my $25 fee to the journal- there is already more information than I have time to absorb.

Really strange because my max jerk is 235, but I guess its increased a lot considering I push pressed my max three times.
I started at 95 and finished at 135. I could have maybe went up 10-20 lbs, but I wasn't in the best environment to be dumping weights.
What a great weekend. The Chicago Level 1 Cert. was awesome on many levels. First of all, the facility was amazing. Lot's of great equipment and lot's of space. I only hope some day my box will be that awesome. Second, the instructors were amazing. Rudy, Jon, Joe, Joe, Nadia, and Adrian,are very seasoned instructors and taught the material very well. I got my first muscle-up, thanks for the tips Adrian and Rudy. I got a PR for Fran and passed the written test for my certification. As for #40 Matt, the bathrooms, I didn't have to wait in line very long (5 minutes). They did have lockers which I put my bag in. Parking??? Really?? It is Chicago for God's sake. 14 bucks is cheap. Take the train next time when you come back to retake your test that you probably failed. Get a life and join Gold's Gym.

You guys serve as role models to so many people and I felt honored just to be in your presence! The knowledge I took away from the seminar will undoubtedly enable me to become a better trainer and CrossFitter. Keep doing what you're doing and spreading the CrossFit message.
To the dissenters above (#40 Matt and #168 dani), not sure what you are b*tching about. I parked for free both days (1 block from the gym on Erie - one of the cross-streets of the gym), had access to plenty of water ($1 cold bottles sold from the enormous refrigerator in front of the gym) including the water fountain, and stored my gym bag in the men's locker room and my lunch in the refrigerator in the pit. I can't imagine it would have been too difficult to actually find this information out for yourself, let alone to ask just about anyone local (which was about half the people there). It appears your perception of "value" was slightly skewed when you signed up for the cert and for that I feel sorry for you. Hopefully the experience minus the parking you paid for was worth it.

Hey not to be a spoil sport or anything, but what's up with Lipson wearing a "lifting belt" in his video?
I thought crossfit looked down on lifting aids, e.g. lifting straps, belts, braces, etc.?
The dude is certainly strong, but that being said a good "lifting belt" gives you a serious advantage by increasing intra-abdominal pressure and therefore assisting in the stabilization mechanism.

Sending a HUGE shout out to the cert trainers in KCMO this past weekend - EC, Chuck and Kurtis. It was an amazing training. They were all great speakers, trainers and demos. I learned more in two days than I ever thought possible. Today was my first day back at the box and I had more confidence/knowledge than ever - thanks!

AND if I had the opportunity I would ask Lipson to his face. AS I said, the goal is NOT to be a dickhead or spoil sport, but to understand what is standard practice or isn't acceptable crossfitting. If Lifting belts are considered legit, then by all means we should use them in the pursuit of PR's. But, if they are NOT considered legit by the crossfit community as a whole, then we should be open about that as well.

trainers at atlas crossfit last weekend were awesome, but I had to take my scantron test on my lap, trip over other's bags because there were no lockers (certainly not one for every participant) and paid 14 bucks for parking on top of my $1000.00 training.
I respect the atlas members/trainers for sticking up for their facility, as you guys probably got free trainings for hosting, but telling people to take the train? Really? Assuming that all that wanted a locker and parking didn't pass the test? Really?

Today was weird. I did this at Globogym today, and the weight felt light. So light that I had to go weigh the barbell afterwards to make sure it was a men's bar. Turns out it was ~2 pounds light, stupid globo. Anyway - this destroys my old 3RM (160), AND my previous 1RM of 175.

Felt good after the presses, so I thought I'd go for the 500m. Although this is a PR, I was shooting for sub-1:30. I think I just didn't have very efficient pulls today. I always forget how the erg can just smoke you - I was seeing stars after this, and my hamstrings and glutes were cramping up.
