Sub for sand bag carry could be either a weight plate carry vs. a med ball cary or find a heavy duty backpack and fill it up with stuff.

Comment #10 - Posted by: Robert at November 20, 2010 7:04 PM

#4 Lisa,

A few sub options for sandbag carry:

-Grab a 45lb plate (or a lower weight if you need) and run 400m with that

-Load up a backpack with books and carry that 400m

-Carry a medicine ball 400m

If you aren't able to run (no track or treadmill). Just sub farmer's walk (carrying dumbbells at your side) for ~400 steps.

My first post. Rx: 32:19 minutes. Food for thought. I used a 50 lb sack of concrete wrapped in duct tape to keep it from tearing open when dropped; makes an awesome sandbag for just a couple of bucks. I have been crossfitting for almost two years. It never fails: you introduce something new and dicey into a workout, in this case the sand bag carries, and everything else becomes easy. I push-pressed like a champ with fast, unbroken sets. I must have forgotten that was actually kind of heavy.

Chief Collin Thomas, the strange looks and bizarre comments from my neighbors made this one of the more memorable WOD's I've done. My thanks and appreciation can not begin to alleviate the pain your family and fiancé are feeling. But, it is brave young men like you that allow my neighbors to flash those strange looks and make those bizarre comments.

Fighting a cold morning in Denver luckily the wind died down a little.

This WOD was unusual in that not one of the exercises was unbearable but, in the aggregate they took a toll on the legs.

Slow time, awesome workout.

Used 70# sandbag, its what I got
push press 115 as rx
box jumps as rx
did ring rows instead of sumo deadlifts, not a true substitution at all, but i only have the one barbell.

Awesome workout.

The quarter mile walk with the shifting sandbag allowed my heart rate to slow while burning my shoulders and biceps; the rest flew by with my heart in my ears, then it was time for the walk again.

Two very different feelings of exhaustion. Awesome.
Thank you, RIP.

Comment #76 - Posted by: BigShew at November 21, 2010 1:58 PM

Sunday musings...

1) Annapurna. Just dreaming, out loud.

2) Richly poor. "I'd like to live as a poor man with lots of money." Pablo Picasso. I like this. There is a simplicity in a life without extra; having money would mean that any and all needs would be covered. Food, shelter, clothing. Medical care when necessary. Travel if needed or wanted.

I've been living quite comfortably, without any need for myself or my family going unmet, after an 80% pay cut some 5 or 6 years ago. No raise yet. When asked about this I always say I DO miss the money--it's much more convenient to have lots of money. But the situation does, indeed, focus one's attention on the needs in one's life, and makes the myriad want/need decisions simpler.

Picasso just says it more elegantly, more economically than I.

3) Small. When did my Dad get so small? Close your eyes. Think of your Dad. What does he look like? How old is he with your eyes closed? He's younger, isn't he? And bigger. MUCH bigger.

I spend most of every day in the company of people decades my senior. I've watched some of them age over 20 years or so. There are a few with whom I've bonded, who I remember and can conjure up an image if asked. I never appreciate the change in size in them, though.

It's a strange phenomenon. It's uncomfortable, no? There really IS a physical change that occurs as we age; we really DO shrink physically. No, it's more than that when you look at your Dad, more than the physical decrease in size, the loss of vigor and all that goes along with it, the stuff I might actually notice in my patients. What makes it so striking when it's your Dad is that it's more than just physical, but a diminution in all dimensions and domains including the one inside your head.

He WAS strength when I was a kid. Literally, a rock. Immovable and unshakeable at all times. Unmoved by excuses or explanations when he knew he was right, or if he MIGHT be right. The final arbiter of discipline ("wait 'til your FATHER gets home...") in a very traditional family, every thing about the guy was just huge.

When did he get so small? It's almost scary, you know. He was the guy who stood between me and everything that might be dangerous, at least figuratively. At least in my mind. It's hard to reconcile the guy I just put on a plane back to RI with my Mom, and the guy who's there--right in front of me--when I close my eyes. So small now, almost frail. That classic love/fear thing now replaced with something more like love/protect. Does he see it, too? How small?

Will I see it, when I've become small?

I'll see you next week...

I decided to only do half today to save some energy for a soccer match later in the day. I put two 25lb weighs in a messenger bag and hugged the weight while I was running. This WOD still kicked my butt. 40# bag. Only had dbells for push-press and SDHP, until bbell opened up at my Y.

Pretty sure I look like a lunatic running with the bag. But, I'm loving CF too much to care.

C/D: casual walk, 400m.

Runs on outdoor road course (54F, 64% humidity, wearing VFF).

First time doing a sandbag carry. Made my own sandbag using the design from Rob Shaul of Mountain Athlete. Worked out great. Low back was sore all day, but didn't really bother me during the WOD. It's already very tight though. Neck is feeling it a bit too, since I cranked my neck forward on a lot of the runs.

Very proud of my wife, who did this one with me. She's just starting CF and gutted out a full six rounds in excellent time.

Done in your honor, Chief Thomas. RIP.

i am curious, do most of the crossfitters do a paleo diet? i follow a paleo diet 85% of the time, but i do like a piece of good bread once a week and maybe a sweet once a week. im just wondering how everyone else feels out there. i dont over do starchy carbs. i dont eat pasta, cakes or white potatoes rice etc. breakfast: mainly protein drink upon rising - eggwhites and spinach/mushroom omlet - snack apple and almonds - lunch: salad and lean protein. snack protein drink or 1/2 no impact bar. dinner fish lots of veggies. snack sugar free fudge bar; or other 1/2 of bar. about 100oz water a day

bingo- thanks for this particular musing.

Was just telling Goat how I wish he had met my pops a few years ago when he was a firebreathin' runner, strong and agile even in his early 70s. A nasty MRSA infection and a few hospitalizations have left him 10lbs lighter and with a slight hobble. His daily outings are now just walks.

The athletes from my box had a chance to meet him recently. I introduced him "This guy is why I'm such a tough coach". I am fiercely proud of him.

I will be smaller too, in many years. In the meantime, I've got lots of heavy stuff to lift!

31:24. six rounds of:
carried 45 lb sack 1200 ft.
112 lb push press
22 inch box jumps
75 lb SDHP.
Sacrum felt a little locked up so I scaled back the SDHP from 95 to 75LBs. Did box jumps first round and 1/2 of second round. then did alternating step ups all other rounds. Used the tail board of the fire truck for the box jumps. Did this at station 10.

these Hero WODs are extra motivation to finish. unfortunately there are probably enough Heros to dedicate to each day. much easier to complete the last quarter mile while chanting "Collin."

as rx'd, but subbed in:
-covered 2 25lb dumbbells with towel and put in close-fitting bookbag with thick shoulder straps and an across-the-chest strap. worked well.
-50lbs dumbbells for push press.

I am way out of shape. Had to do the box jumps on the tailgate, which was fun, but man those runs wore me out. Almost did the first two sets of pp unbroken so thats good. Was so slow that I cut it to 3 rnds. Best wishes to those left behind.

Started at dusk and finished in the dark on a gravel road with patches of ice. I used a 50# bag of grout that I dropped and broke about 100m into the last round. I carried about 2/3 the weight cradled in front of me for the final 300m. Transitions were slow putting on and taking off gloves/hat/jacket.

We had to change this up because neighbors wanted to join (not enough equipment) and kids wanted attention. We dialed down to 4 rounds and carried kids on our backs as we ran up the hill. As rx'd, 36:23. Did this in honor of my middle son, Colin, who turned 4 today!

Sandbag runs were surprisingly the worst. It was hard to hold the sandbag in place - forearms were burning - and it was just slow and painful. My runs were more like jogs, they took about twice as long as running a 400. It felt like a small victory to not walk though. Everything else felt pretty good - went unbroken for the most part. Middle rounds were 6:00 to 6:30; first and last rounds were 5:30 to 6:00.
