love the pic...make due with what you've got.

Comment #6 - Posted by: Srawlings m79"259 at November 17, 2010 5:14 PM

#4, I think it basically means that you can have natural talent and achieve several accomplishments based on said natural talent by not having to practice or work for it at all. Therefore, being persistent (say for example, in something you do not have natural talent in) builds confidence because you have ultimately made a bigger achievement in motivating yourself to become better, than the same-old natural-talent accomplishment that doesn't require persistence.
Just my thoughts.

Comment #7 - Posted by: Steve at November 17, 2010 5:24 PM

can someone clarify a technique issue - watching the vids as the weight slides down the leg to the low hang position it tends to drift away from the bodies midline, i noticed with a lot of the lifts as they power upwards the weighte tends to drift even further away and marginally curls outwards and upwards, should the weight come back up more vertically than it appears in these vids, for that to happen it would remain closer to the thigh as the hips extend

My mistake! I only did 5 sets of 3 instead of 7! Actually....there was one more set at 155 where I wasn't able to get the third one that isn't in the video...so that combined with warm up sets...

Oh well! I love me some power cleans!

Comment #14 - Posted by: Miranda at November 17, 2010 5:55 PM

Not to question Dave Lipson's beastliness, but aren't you supposed to hang on to the bar for it to count as a set of three?

I don't know if you really have to hang to the bar, but at the regionals athletes had 40 seconds to complete their 3 reps of clean and jerk, so I guess that's the standard

Comment #25 - Posted by: James H at November 17, 2010 7:00 PM

I just wanted to know how much time are you taking in between sets? Is it typical power lifting rest periods?

Comment #26 - Posted by: Jon Halbreich at November 17, 2010 7:32 PM

I'm noticing a trend between this WOD and the hang-power snatch is that everyone's weight seems to PR around 135% - 145% higher... For those of you looking for a starting point....

Comment #27 - Posted by: Masen at November 17, 2010 7:33 PM

I am gonna go ahead assume that some of us are going to have to let go of the bar to re-grip. I will. I think that either way is gonna be legit. Dave Lipson's lifts where legit. You can't ask someone to regrip 300+ pounds on the way down or hold on to it either. My thumbs would pop off, but my thumbs would pop off with 300+ anyway. I imagine that the 40 sec time stated above in this comments section is good, but I think there needs to be some self integrity with the amount of time spent re-gripping.
I love the elbow speed on some of these lifts. It is the second most important thing after the explosive hip exstension. Austin, you are a stong dynamic guy. Get those elbows around faster and higher at parallel to the ground. I notice you look down in the catch. Try looking at something straight ahead of you, even with your eyes when you are standing up straight. Good lifts! I have been shooting for your lifts and times lately. Your ahead so far. I will keep you posted.

PNF (proprioceptive neuromuscular facilitation) is not the same as contract-relax. PNF involves mass movement patterns which are spiral & diagonal in character & closely resemble the mvmts used in sports & work. The spiral & diagonal character is in keeping with the spiral & rotary characteristics of the skeletal system of bones & joints & the ligamentous structures. This type of motion is also in harmony with the topographical alignment of the muscles from origin to insertion & with the structural characteristics of individual muscles. There are 2 flexion diagonals & 2 extension diagonals for each major part. These patterns take all the joints involved in the movement thru their complete range of motion.
You can use contract-relax within a PNF pattern to gain strength &/or mobility, but that is a seperate technique.
Sorry, Lipson, you are super cute, but I had to correct you on that one!!
Love the road trip vids.

I have not regained my strength from last year, and my technique is lacking, so here is the result:

HPC 3-3-3-3-3-3-3.
WU 45-5-85-95.
HPC 115-125-130-135-135-140F-135-135.

I don’t know what it is but it felt like I needed to do more, cos I felt like I was only getting warmed up so then did HPC 3-3-3-3-3 (125) and HPC 3-3-3-3-3 (135). Felt good so I decided to do one more set (140PR), but then I could only bring it up one rep at a time w/ a short break in between. Nonetheless, that is a PR anyway…

I love the O lifts, keep 'em coming!..

In WODs where power snatches and cleans are prescribed for load, what determines whether a given rep was a "power" c/s, and what reps you failed because it was a full c/s. Obviously, it's dependant on where you catch the bar, but where do we draw the line, and how? Does it matter?

Just getting back into this, not sure what I use to hang power clean, but I do feel like it was more than what I did today!
wooden stick, 20lb bar, 35lb short bar, 45lb long bar, 65lb this was a good weight but I felt I needed to repeat it for form's sake, 65lb second time around was perfect, 70lb good stuff! I'd like to see 95lb in my future!!!

SSS-WWW-EEE-TTT numbers put up by those ladies today!

Feeling so out of the loop with our new affilate and not following main site. Need to get on a schedule in my garage to re join the forces!

CF 033/CF Relentless today:

AMRAP 20 minutes

run 1 mile then for the remainder of the 20 minutes 10 KB swings 1.5/1 pood, 10 wall ball 20/14 to 10' target

I actually ran a mile just under 9 minutes~fantastic for me. 9 rounds+5 swings with 1 pood and 16# ball to 10' target.

Got a little sloppy up high - not transitioning to parallel and letting the hook grip go at the top.

Would've liked to get one set @205...

195 -> put the bar down to adjust grip between 2nd and 3rd rep
200 -> failed the first attempt and got one rep the second attempt, then failed another 4 or 5 times before my second rep, then one fail between second and third
not technically the workout, but this was just a war between me and the other guys i lift with to throw the weight up

i thought it was usually 5 sets of 3 reps for max weight usually, but they just juiced this one up to 7 reps, so no idea where that came from
not complaining though, loved this workout especially after that ass kicker we had yesterday.

So I don't know how formally correct it is to "concentrate on pulling the shoulders back."I think It may send the wrong message. The Idea for oly lifting is to continue in one plane of direction, by throwing the shoulders back and breaking the plane you are creating bad habits.

#161, thought about that too, but I think she's talking about a "layback", which if you watch the bar in slo mo, the bar is still coming up in the frontal plane...look at any good snatch when the athlete is in triple extension, and typically they are seemingly pulling backwards

Topped out at 135, 145x2. Hard to convey how ego-crushing this is and how much work I obviously have to do. This has to be a big-time technique issue; these numbers are near the bottom here, while my DL and squat numbers tend to be at least middle of the pack. Guess I'll try to hit these, the hang power snatches, and the Burgener warmup as suggested.

I tweaked my lower back on the set with 205 and it started to hurt pretty bad by the time I started the last set. It wasn't so much muscular failure as realizing that I was in danger of seriously hurting myself.
