Comment #4 - Posted by: Masen at November 15, 2010 5:24 PM

are those their starting weights? It seems pretty light for their last rep.

Comment #5 - Posted by: av4bama at November 15, 2010 5:33 PM

@av4bama

You lose a lot of power when you only get a slight dip before you explode, rather than coming off the floor. Check back to your last snatch PRs, and see what they are when you finish... you probably won't hit them.

Comment #6 - Posted by: Masen at November 15, 2010 5:39 PM

Lipson definitely had that junk yard dog attitude !!

Comment #7 - Posted by: PPSP at November 15, 2010 5:43 PM

last hang snatch PR was 250. I have been doing hang snatch for the last ten years though.

Comment #8 - Posted by: av4bama at November 15, 2010 5:47 PM

Man... I so want to hit this. I'm doing this at night, in the dark - probably on waterlogged lawn unless it stays dry.

My snatch is poor, this is just gonna make it more obvious. Great WOD for me then :)

Comment #9 - Posted by: David 26/5'7"/75kg at November 15, 2010 5:55 PM

I feel like I learn more about snatches just watching Hobart snatch and going through his movements frame-by-frame than by all the WOD demos and exercise walkthroughs all together.

His form is perfect.

Hope my back is up to this tomorrow, but I'll probably get more from it just going really light and working form.

Austin, keep your head up when you pull yourself under. My guess is that you're compensating for lack of speed to get under the bar. It'll also help with shoulder stability...I may be wrong, but it's an observation.

...Hobart may have said all of this but my sound if messed up, so it was on mute.

That road trip video is amazing! I can't wait for part two. The snatches and lunges workout + burpees had me about to vomit just watching it. Definitely something worth trying sometime. Keep up the good work with the films, guys!

Lipson is a big guy, but I think Orlando is a more fit and all around better crossfit athlete. Lipson is cool because he lives in California, that's a given, but other than that he is just too voluminous to be a threat as a crossfit athlete. He is a very strong man, but bodybuilders are too. Crossfit is about being fit, in every dynamic of exercise and fitness, including weight lifting, but not limited to it. I could just never see a big guy like him being a threat in crossfit, because even Orlando had to lose a lot of weight to be a pound for pound competitor. Spealler is the best, this a given for his otherworldy ability to lift many times his bodyweight, while at the same time flies through the body weight workouts.

Comment #28 - Posted by: adrian at November 15, 2010 10:18 PM

Unlike in life and all the major pro sports, there is NO advantage to being big and strong in crossfit.

Comment #29 - Posted by: Mike at November 15, 2010 10:33 PM

I thought myself out of getting that first 55 kg, happy to break through that. But I'm happiest most of all because I got my first bar muscle-up, followed by 5 more! Finally, no more subbing triple dips and pullups. Now if only I had some rings...

Comment #31 - Posted by: THolm at November 16, 2010 12:35 AM

Not to knock the athleticism of the two individuals in video today, but by definition, Michelle Kinney and Dave Lipson were both performing power snatches from the hip, not the hang.

Austin, Dave and anyone else,
When you do your hang from above the knees PS, start from the fully upright position. Then, bring the bar to upper thigh and reverse direction ABRUPTLY!!

Dave- With the power you possess, doing the aforementioned change will yield 5-7.5 kilo increase (or more). I'm saying this from experience. When I could hook grip deadlift 260 kilos, I could Hang PS 105 kilos.

Austin- Scapulas turned back as well (you'll do 80 kilos).

8. 125lbs
9. 125lbs
10.130lbs f. 125lbs got it.

All done in my 15min break, so kind of rushed. I probably could have faught through and got 130, but I didn't have the time. Fun work.

Snatched from the floor today instead...

115x2
135x2
150x1
160x1
170x1 (Ugly, landed too wide)
180x1 (Better)
190x0 (Didn't finish pull)
190x0 (Got underneath and stood up with it, but didn't steady myself before coming up and lost it behind me)
190x1 (PR)

190 PR was a power snatch which was odd because I never power snatch. It was probably the best looking lift out of my last five attempts though.

Hello:)

Well this is my 2nd week with Crossfit! Just finshed the WOD and only used 50lb being I'm new and all:) Anyhow I'm asking if it's beneficial to add a quick 2 mile run to the work out? I'm not sure if I would be "over doing" it considering Im new. However I'm no stranger to weights or Cardio. Maybe a silly question but would like some sound advice! Thanks

The road trip vid is cool. Nice to see my home town getting some press lately, this video, along with the SealFit vids which are from Encinitas. But, the video say's their arrival spot is Cardiff...I do think it is officially Solana Beach.;)

Light warmup today: Unassisted Pull-Ups - 5, 3, 2

5 x 45 warmup hang snatch
65, 75, 85f, 85, 95, 105f, 105, 115f, 115f, 115

Fails consisted of basically pressing weight to stabilize lift. Form on my snatches still stinks. Will keep working.

Cooldown: 15 min on recumbent bike

Made up the 12 min. AMRAP, 400m run and 5x deadlift, got 4 rounds plus 5 deads, 365. Subbed 160 single unders in place of each 400m run, running on the tread would have broken the workout up too much.

"All human beings, from the most orthodox to the most atheistic, are in fact religious. In this sense, religion is understood as the faith that gives meaning to our lives and orients our being. Religion is not an external object for “scientific” analysis, but rather is the omnipresent worldview that guides each of us in our every action. The question is thus not whether we are religious or not, or even what name we give our religion. Instead, what is important is whether the religion we are actually living is one that alienates us, or one which liberates us."

C/D: static hang from pull-up bar, 1 minute.

Might have tried to go a bit heavier, if I had bumpers. These didn't feel too bad.

Exertion headache returned on the final w/u set. Overhead activity is what seems to exacerbate it. Going to keep massaging the neck and shoulders, but that doesn't seem to be doing the trick.

Pulled something in the calf during DU WU.

Did the WOD anyway, a bit hesitant.
Started with empty bar up to 45 or 50 kg. Failed at 50 or 55 kg.
Can't remember.

Need more flexibility in L/T joint.
Need to press more with wider grip.

I didn't get far. I got to 95lbs and my shoulder started to hurt. I was keeping my weights from slamming on the ground so I didn't wake the neighbors (I was doing this at 10:30pm). Keeping the weight from making a bunch of noise is what hurt the shoulder. Will work on fixing that.

This is absolutley wrong - rasing your elbows may force your forward - squeezing your lats and elbows down and tight will force your chest up and help enable you to drive your hips forward - regardless of stance width.
