155 pound Squat Clean and Jerk, 30 reps
The barbell goes from ground to overhead, passing through a front squat in which the crease of the hip passes below the height of the kneecap. The finish position is with the arms, hips and knees fully extended, arms overhead, with at least a portion of the ear visible in front of the arm. Dropping the barbell is acceptable.
Austin Malleolo 3:01, Camille Leblanc-Bazinet 3:53 (105lbs).

Did this a few days ago, but mod from jerk to thruster..
30 x squat clean to thruster (70kg)
I think you could go sub-3 if you did more of a jerk than a thruster...Nicely done!
And, if you can do 30 C&J in sub3 you have to up the weight, as K-star once said: 225 is the new 135.
Did Barbells for Boobs: Amazing Grace today at Crossfit Ero. PR'd my Grace by 1 min! Finished at 2:53!
So, heavy Grace basically.
Sounds like #6 is in love.Rx'd 7:09 was heavier than I thought. What's Austin's stats(height and weight) He's a machine
155 pound Squat Clean and Jerk, 30 reps
Not real happy with it but I'm not going to wine about it. Only real post is bad form, missed a few reps. Enede up on my toes on the clean in the squat for some reason whic I almost never do. But glad I got it done.
This will be fun, just wish I could drop weights at my Globo Gym...
5:08 not RX'ed. 150 pounds.
do the times still count when someone is helping control the bar from bouncing away from you every time you drop it?? That has to help a little right??
RE: vid of Austin and Camille...
Not a great example of coaching a class of athletes - Austin shouldn't need a cheerleader for every rep, intensity needs to come from within. Also, everyone else in the class was basically ignored from a coaching standpoint for at least the first 3 minutes. As an paying crossfit affiliate athlete, that is not the kind of environment that I would be looking for.
Great work output though.
As Rx'd 13:51 :(
Second WOD of the day
Ok I have to ask.. Why does everyone have blue shoes? haha what are they? and whats so special about them?
did 9km hill run 39min.. toasty!
#16- They're called Inov8 running shoes. Yu can check them out off of crossfitendurance.com website........simply THE best shoes for running ever.
#16...Better than my Vibram Bikila's??? :)
Why is it that the video names never match the workout names? Is there a video demonstration of the squat clean and jerk? very frustrating...
#13 and #21.
You guys don't know the whole story. Maybe it's his personal coach? He's helping him with pacing and timing throughout, so clearly they had a plan worked out that takes 100% attention to do correctly. When you're one of the best CrossFitters out there, that's the kind of attention you get.
Everyone else seems okay with it there - must be a reason.
What's with all the sparring? It's Maleolo! It's on class....I'm just as much a purest as the next guy but look at it this way....Camille is being ignored? That's what's crazy. The coach is ignoring Camille! In the voice of Will Ferrell/Old School to the coach... "yerr craaazy man...yer crazzy, but I like you"
7:04 Rx'd for the W.O.D. Just happy to be here! Happy Halloween to the CrossFit Nation
Felt really heavy today. I have been feeling like ass lately, I took three days off and just not feeling it today.
Camp Dwyer, Afghanistan
c/j 135-30 reps
camp dywer afghanistan
Wow...hard to win here at CrossFit these days. Either someone has bad form or their coach making sure all their reps are legit is ignoring the class.
As that coach "ignoring" the rest of the class I'd have to agree with comment #21 and make sure you know the whole story before posting your thoughts to the world.
If you knew "Austin's Coach" Jay you would know that he is a great guy who hosts a lot of high end CrossFit events with the utmost enthusiasm, at his CrossFit facility in Albany: One of them being the "Northeast Regionals." I've met him and Austin and they're great people. In watching that video, and based on the fact that there's not one, but TWO game's competitors, I would assume that it was likely a "class" of coaches who are just thrilled to be training with athlete's of that caliber. In knowing Jay from many events, I HIGHLY doubt he would ignore his other athletes, and I highly doubt that Austin being the coach he is would allow it...
My thought was that they had that coach qualifying every rep in response to the constant nit-picking of form that has been posted here about his previous demos. Some people just love to complain no matter what you do.
Amazing performance & from his previous positive responses here to the "sour grapes" negative feedback it's clear he's thinking like Colin Cowherd says: "Don't let people with no lives ruin yours"
For perfect form:
135 lb squat clean and jerk, 30 reps
full rom on cj's, but scaled to 135lb. interesting to see difference btw this and grace (grace time ~7 min with power cleans). thought i would do better here.
THIS is my FAVORITE wod! My PR in this was like 8:09 (105#)and I was about as excited as a kid.
Been CF'ing but not been able to post.
21 PC, 80#
35 WL, with 2(25#) DB overhead
10 1-Arm snatch R
10 1-Arm snatch L
Lots of trail running and yoga this weekend. Off to the gym later today
Happy Halloween everyone ;)
2010-10-31: 17:58. 5's@4:42,6:30,6:45. Should've scaled, too heavy for me to go any quicker.
1) Armadillo. We could all use a thicker skin, myself included.
2) Natural. Are you a natural athlete? Know one? Someone who can do pretty much ANYTHING physical and do it really well, that's my definition of a natural. My brother is like that, truly gifted. When he applies himself (as he has done in basketball as a young man and golf forever) the results are astonishing.
The cool thing, at least for me, is watching those natural athletes when they run up against the limit of their natural ability. What do they do they? Some pack it in, so accustomed to succeeding without any extra effort they lack the ability or will (or both) to use their natural gift as the foundation and WORK to achieve more.
Others, like my brother, accept the challenge and apply themselves to achieving whatever the absolute limit of nature and nurture might be. Character lies there, in that pursuit, for us all.
3) Fit. In a similar vein I am reminded once again of the vast variety of goals we have here, chez Crossfit. My goal is simply to be physically fit, healthy, able to thrive tomorrow regardless of what tomorrow might entail, and to do so for as many tomorrows as possible. Others need or want more, but at 50 I'm actually asking quite a lot.
You see, I am on a plateau at the moment. I am becalmed at this particular level, one that is frankly a little less lofty than others I have occupied, due to a LACK of will. I have quite simply not been able to go as hard or as far or as fast as I have in the recent past, and I believe my inability to do so is nothing but a failure of will. I'm having trouble leaving myself in a heap, trouble pushing the intensity needle into the red.
Nothing has changed about that red zone, that dark place I visit that builds both fitness and resilience. What is lacking for the moment is the willingness to go there. I'll find it again, maybe even this afternoon in the WB/SU/BackExt WOD. Maybe just saying it out loud is all that is needed.
Our goals may be different, and our outcomes may differ in terms of degree, but how we achieve them, as Crossfitters, always comes back to intensity.
I'll see you next week...
30 rep, 105# - 11:45
Why does this workout torch my body and soul so bad? I should never have taken time off crossfit, I feel so weak now!
Scaled weight down to 85#. Time - 5.17
Getting better after starting doing crossfit again after being on hiatus for so long. Looking forward to raising the bar!
25 C&J x 155 lb. 14 min.
Wrong weight, wrong technique, wrong morning after a night out, wrong athlete? Great WOD however even scaled.
First 3 were 155#. Form degraded quickly, so I dropped to 95# for the rest.
most were done clean and thruster
next time try working the jerk into the top of the clean
(Previous was 9:59 but I noted that I had some power cleans that time).
These were all legit.
Abs are wrecked from GHD yesterday. Trick-or-treating was last night here in the bible belt so a belly full of 65(c) blocks of candy probably didn't help.
im not normally one to get all bent out of shape about form or technique in the videos but I do feel sorry for Camille's knees by the end of the video.OUCH..
scaled to 135#
Probably should have kept it at 155#...
This was a terrible WOD for me. No excuses...I just lack power at heavy weight. lol
So every rep for me was a split jerk and I had to control lower to the ground, because of the metal weights at the gym I was at today.
18:09 Rx'd :(
Thank you Bingo, I enjoy the thinking that your 'musings' prod each Sunday.
Thanks Suzanne! Appreciate the kind words!
Most of the people on here who have negative comments and think they know more than the elite athletes are usually people who never accomplished anything in their lives. If you know so much about crossfit, why not try to qualify for the games? You are the kind of people that get really frustrated with your favorite NFL teams every Sunday afternoon and think you know better than the head coach. Grow up and stop talking trash about these athletes.
Ignore the haters, keep the videos coming. Awesome work from Austin, Camille, and Ackerman!
13:51- had no energy at 6am-
Metal plates as well so no drops
#13 @ Cam
Really glad you don't train at my gym.
As rx'd 15:50
This WOD really helped me with my form on cleans. I actually thought jerking would make this WOD easier but, to my amazement doing a thruster was much more productive and helped work on my explosiveness out of the bottom.
Not that my time was anything to write home about but, considering that 165 is about the max I can do a legitimate squat clean with I was happy with my ability to get under the bar as fatigue setr in.
scaled to 135
olympic techniques still eluding me....
I did 10 clean and jerks with 45# bar and shoulder and wrist hurt so I decided on a different workout.
Helen a la rue Chartrand (our block)
3 rounds of
21 1 pood USA kb swings
5 forehead to bar pullups.(yeesh!)
First time doing over the head kb swings in a long time.
Hanging from the pullup bar didn't hurt.
Running wasn't exactly swift and the extra 750m made for a longer workout.
Forehead to bar..... that's gotta change....
This workout was killer today after being a bicycle medic for the Marine Corps Marathon all morning. Great work to all the participants at JBB, Iraq!
Did Fran with 45# bar as my warm up(theres a Fran contest coming up in a few weeks so I'll prob do this on a daily basis)
As Rx'd in about 10:00
40 k2e, and 100 4 count flutters to end things
Firefighter in Balad, Iraq
20 second pace (3 reps per minute). I think I did one or two extra reps in a sprint in the last couple of minutes. Obviously there was some gas left. Next time I'll try 155 pound and/or a faster pace.
We will be doing this WOD today after the Bronco (yes I know they suck) game.
This is not an attempt to bash as I know I am very far away from fully understanding CF. I am very much a beginner and still looking to better myself here. Please keep in mind this is the reason for my question.
In watching the WOD video with Malleolo I am having a hard time discerning the difference of what he is doing and thrusters. In reading the title of the WOD, I expected times to be higher than this due to the setup at the top for the jerk.
Is there a minor movement that I am missing? I just don't think my "eyes" are really able to see the details in all CF movements. If I am not able to see the difference I know my times are going to be very high. I will be setting up at the top for the jerk. Sort of a pause I guess... Is this wrong?
Some insight would be greatly appreciated before this WOD works me over.
I can't drop it in my gym, but it was a lot heavier than I remember.
Why are the videos loading extremly slow nowadays, or is it just for me?
135 lb. Squat cleans
3:01 as RX'd, oh my god! Austin Malleolo must be a monster!!
My own, um, more human performance . . .
Didn't do any oly lifting over the summer because I was traveling for pretty much 3 months straight. LOML got me bumper plates for my birthday though, so hopefully my oly lifting will start improving.
crazy how Austin can move all that weight that fast, what is also even out of this planet is how Spealler can move that much weight as fast as Austin. (it makes no sence) his working capacity is out of the planet, Insane. Camille = Beast, Everyone that can do this under 5 minutes, you need to go up in weight and you are a strong mofo. :) my 2 cents.
5:45 as Rx'd
Gotta say...I watched the video...I'll have to go back and watch it again because I didn't even notice Austin was in the video. It was probably a ploy by Jason and Austin because by putting Camille in the video, everyone wouldn't pay so much attention to range of motion and they would be distracted by her. But I'm sure there are some real die hard purists out there who will find plenty of faults. As for me, I looked at my watch at 3:04 and I still had 10 reps to go...that is movin'!
*cooked from cyclo-cross race yesterday. Right calf took a pedal beating too.
Thank you for your posts. They are one of the few reasons I even bother to look at the comments nowadays.

Did 30 rep. C & J @ 65 lbs. w/ SBCA Mask on the other day my time was 3:20.
Today I did 30 rep. 135 lb. Dead-Lift
So sore from climbing ladders yesterday.
"The red zone, that dark place I visit..." nice picture painting through those words. So often my WOD times basically blow chunks compared to others. But then I need to recognize I am reaching my capacity and I am doing my best. My #1 measure of effectiveness is the muscle soreness the next day (or 2 or 3). It is pain but that pain has come to be a welcome friend.
and HUGE thanks to all my extended family at my local box that encourage me to navigate through that dark place I visit on a regular basis to get to the other side where there are always smiles and high-5's and the feeling of a job well done. It is only that which brings me back to do it again tomorrow.
Really pleased with work but still want to be better. Almost as good as my last 135 Squat Grace though. Made sure to actually do a Jerk and not Thruster.
scaled to 125
great workout. never done something like this or grace.
as Rx'd in 10:45 (weight was never dropped, I have metal plates without covering)
did Kalsu today with a buddy - scaled down to 95#
9:54 as rx'd (while weighing 170)
I'm happy with that level of horsepower, knocking them out in combinations of three and then two touch-and-go's. I went 3-2, 3-2, all the way up to 30 reps.
The wife posted a 23:50, fighting with 85 pounds and screaming enough to make Monica Seles blush. She woke the entire neighborhood. Who knows what everyone imagined.
I wonder how fast Camille would have gone if she had someone settling her bar after every rep....
Had to skip today. I was told to avoid anything involving hip flexors for a week. Ran Tabata (not sure if that is allowed but felt ok). And the stretch workout I did had me sweating bullets and almost crying--I would have rather been doing Fran.
Scaled to 111#
First time on this one, scaled weight.
SQCJ: 105lb x30
Alright, I'm going to play devil's advocate again: hasn't it occurred to anyone that throwing or dropping the weight from shoulder height is both unnecessary and MORE difficult than riding it down. If you watch Camille on the WOD she goes much faster when she isn't dropping the weight uncontrolably. I know that bumper plates were created for a reason, but come on people. Dropping the weight from eight feet in the air doesn't make you any more "fit." It has the potential to be dangerous and DOEs damage bars....I've seen the same phenomenon when DBs are used as kettlebells and then tossed needlessly.....NOT COOL.
This is over a minute longer than my last Grace, which is understandable. Sure felt the burn in my quads by the end. Always love the Olympic lifts.
Wall Ball/Sit-up/Back Ext WOD, details there.
No stops; no rests; a little gray there at the end.
WOD @ Ryan's garage Gym
WU with some ROM before leaving the house.
Then some sit up medicine ball throws 2x10 12# ball.
WU 65#x5; 95#x4; 115#x1 (Planned to do the wod at 115 but this told me no so sub'ed at 95# instead)
WOD 95#x30 C&J Time = 9:46
As the athlete in the video right behind Austin and Camille and a coach at Albany Crossfit, I can tell you Ackerman was coaching Austin for this particular WOD to ensure proper range of motion. We all had about 20 other people in the room watching and cheering us on.
In no way did me, or the other coaches and athletes that hit that WOD during lunchtime of a Weekend Crossfit Revival feel neglected.
wanted sub 5
The fact that this workout was done in 3:01 is absolutely absurd.
As rx'd 7:54 .. strangely enough my forearms are just as sore as my hip flexors after this one. Also, I know that I need to work on the range of motion going all the way down on the squat cleans, but good workout overall .. definitely brought it to me today.
Also, got the look of wide eyes today at the globo-gym as I was trying to get myself through the last 5-7 reps of this one, they weren't sure wth was going on, it was glorious to watch.
Started out more Thruster but that weight adds up.
As rx'd 12:35. Not thrilled about the time, but form was perfect for all 30.
did it with 130 lbs
6m53s not too good/bad
Two 5k bike rides front and backside of the wod

Then I ran a 5k at 20:05.
D @ 29's
I've never done SC&Js, so I had to scale the weight to get the form right, I'm not a form snob or anything, just didn't want to hurt myself the first time doing these. I scaled the weight to 105.
jordan - did not attempt
tiff- did not attempt
could have gone faster
Oh yeah, then I swam a nice 1500m.
W/U: squat clean & jerk, 10x3 at 45-55-65-75-85-95-105-115-125-135#.
As Rx: 9:05.
C/D: static stretching of hamstrings and quads, 3 min hold each.
Last time we did this, I scaled to 135#. So no comparison time. Full squat on cleans, most jerks were split. Controlled drop after each rep (no bumpers).
Worked a few missed movements:
10 Clean & Thruster with 60# dumbbells
Step up, 20" box, 50#DB's: 2x8/8
first time doing any variant of Grace. Squat cleans felt good today, but jerks were more like thrusters half the time. Much tougher than expected. Pace was 5 reps/min, just couldn't go much faster than that...
No bumpers - 14:27 still PR!
Keho had the best view in the house
1km Row 3:34 warm up
as Rx'd for 7min flat
Jeremy A. Olive at October 31, 2010 11:10 AM
Technically you are correct but if your drive on the squat is strong enough you will get the same dip, drive response out of the bar.
when he was fresh he would rebend to jump under the bar and catch it. But as he fatigued he did lock his knees more.
Zack at October 31, 2010 3:29 PM are you using the hook grip? and are you setting the weight down or dropping?
Did my first official 10k run today. Was a mud run so there were about 8 obstacles including mud pits to crawl through. Finished in 1 hr 3 mins and had a blast. Trained mostly with cross fit and never ran more than 5k prior. Felt great.
95 pound Squat Clean and Jerk, 30 reps
first two reps at 155 and failed after the SC on third, restarted rep 3 at 135.
powercleans in the C&J rather than squat cleans (my legs didn't want to bend!)

95 pound Squat Clean and Jerk, 30 reps
Finished in: 11:30
- HR Avg 161 / HR Max 174
- Was a lot harder than expected, esp. on the cardio
- Could've handled a bit heavier weight (115lbs?) but it would have slowed me way down
- Right wrist was acting up
- Cashed out with CFE Tabata WOD (Treadmill sprints 7mph@12' incline); damn near killed me
CFWU x 3
Rushed, going TDY again
#95; really good squat(s) at this wt, hard enough.
As Rx'd 11:42
I still loved it.
135# Squat Clean and Jerk
Tried the 155# for the first 4 reps and could tell that wasn't going to work. Still sucked at 135. Broken set all the way through.
49 / 181
only did the squat clean part
Not sure what I was thinking. Started with 115# but pace was so slow and wanted to make sure ROM/jerk was solid.
Total: 12:55 (left some in the tank and that stinks)
Stick with #115 next time and better time... then 135#

3x5 squat, 315,315,315
as Rx'd 4.55 about a min slower than I wanted to go sub 4 squats right before slowed me down substantially
As rx'd, 5:36.
Ouch, this one hurt like Fran. I split this up into sets of 5, with forced breaks in between - but tried to keep the breaks really short. After the first of these, I was about 1 minute per 5 C&J's. Did most of these thruster-style instead of true "jerks", but as I fatigued, I didn't have enough coming out of the front squat, so the last 5-10 were all jerks. Missed on the first attempt on jerk #30, but caught it instead of dropping it. Rested in rack position for a few breaths, and then was able to get it on the second try, barely.
4:59 rx'd, :06 better than 08
Should have gone heavier...but form was perfect throughout.

PR by over 2:00, insane!
Clean n' jerk 50kg - 30 reps
4 reps 175# (I cant add), 26 reps 155#
Time 16:05 (no bumpers)
I was warming up and thinking ok this going to suck then I hit start. 4 reps later Im thinking wow this is really going to suck, then it hit me. Im an idiot I had 2 45s and 4 10s on the bar, WTF. So I do basic math in my head and 135 + 40 = I Suck at math. Any way C&Js were TRUE C&Js, squat cleaned, stand up, jerk. Nothings wrong with the other methods its defintley faster but for me faster is not always better. I tend to F my self up going balls to wall on complex movements, i.e I tweaked my knee last week doing the C&J/cindy WOD.
no bumpers would have helped alot /did power cleans however
8:40, did full sq. cleans, but lowered weight to 135 cause I was so sore from frisbee yesterday.
15:15 NO DROPS/COLD

That hurt. As rx'd - 8:51
Did only 135lb clean and jerk but finished all 30 reps event though the bar bounced back at my right thumb and hurt the crap out of it...thought i broke it so that took a good 3 minutes out of my workout trying to let the pain pass and assess the damage...I didnt have the luxury of throwing the bar down since I dont have bumpers and I would brake the floor with the iron plates so had to let the bar down slowly each time and that tired me out quick. but my final time nonetheless was:
52kg Squat Clean and Jerk, 30 reps

M.36.168 newbie with 105 C&J for 3:30
Scaled to 125# = 16 minutes.
Right wrist really started getting pissed at me, so about 10 reps in, i had to start resting a few seconds (minutes?) between attempts to stretch and massage it out. Upshot is that the actual C&J felt nice and strong when I finally did it...until the wrist got pissed at me again. :S
Oh yeah...only about 1/3 of my reps were actually SQUAT C&Js, as holding my wrists in the catch position for the duration of a catch in the squat, or a post-catch squat, was murder. I did as many as I could as RX'ed, but easily 2/3rds were not.
Boy, that felt slow. I failed on one rep at around 26 which added a full minute to my time. Don't miss any reps... it'll cost ya. Still, more than 10 minutes faster than last time and no power cleans this time around.
More better faster
18:12 wasn't worried about time, focused on form
12 at 115, rest at 95
Scaled to 95lb
Erased time on watch
Same as 236
I really had to focus on form on this one, the mental prep before each lift was awesomely daunting. I kept imagining Rippetoe/Burgener coaching me (I CF solo). Wish I had bumpers to let it down, too, that certainly made the time fly by faster.
The lift wasn't tough, for me, but performing without breathing (as is the CF par) was tough with form in mind. Thoroughly enjoyable WOD, and panic set in around the 10th rep. Relief and determination at rep 20. Rep 15 felt like I was climbing a mountain...
18:49 as rx'd

I've been off for most of this month due to work, vacation, and illness, so I dropped back to a pack/puppy hybrid. Felt good, but I was very sore the following day.
as rx'd 9:05
Hurt....need bumbers so can drop. Would make a larger difference in time I believe.

As Rx'd - did on Saturday 06 November. First WOD in a week after the birth of my son.
Little harder than I thought. Not been sleeping much and eating like crap, but all excuses, I guess. Felt great just to get in and stretch / warm up
CFWU-3. 12 pushups instead of HSPU 3rd. Superman. Burgener. DU.
Better than last time anyway. Need to get past mental part of high rep sq cleans. Need to get more consistent at keeping knees out all the way through each rep. Little better when I focused staying back on heels at beginning of first pull.
wod: rxd in 5:41
10.02 rx'ed, about a minute off my 08 time, even w better technique now! But a heck of a workout

I know we all try to go as fast as possible on these wods but the wod is called clean and jerks not clean and thrusters c mon guys do the wods correctly.

Next time increase weight to 145 (plan to raise weight if completed in less than 15 min)
Holy Mallelo!!! Just amazing what you elite athletes can do. This workout smashed me. I thought it would be a cinch. Knocked out 5 or 6 continuous and then slammed into a wall. It was 2's and three's, after that, in between gasping for air. Beautiful.
