155 pound Squat Clean and Jerk, 30 reps

The barbell goes from ground to overhead, passing through a front squat in which the crease of the hip passes below the height of the kneecap. The finish position is with the arms, hips and knees fully extended, arms overhead, with at least a portion of the ear visible in front of the arm. Dropping the barbell is acceptable.

Austin Malleolo 3:01, Camille Leblanc-Bazinet 3:53 (105lbs).
Post time to comments.

Austin,

I think you could go sub-3 if you did more of a jerk than a thruster...Nicely done!

And, if you can do 30 C&J in sub3 you have to up the weight, as K-star once said: 225 is the new 135.

Not real happy with it but I'm not going to wine about it. Only real post is bad form, missed a few reps. Enede up on my toes on the clean in the squat for some reason whic I almost never do. But glad I got it done.

do the times still count when someone is helping control the bar from bouncing away from you every time you drop it?? That has to help a little right??

RE: vid of Austin and Camille...

Not a great example of coaching a class of athletes - Austin shouldn't need a cheerleader for every rep, intensity needs to come from within. Also, everyone else in the class was basically ignored from a coaching standpoint for at least the first 3 minutes. As an paying crossfit affiliate athlete, that is not the kind of environment that I would be looking for.

My .02

Great work output though.

#13 and #21.

You guys don't know the whole story. Maybe it's his personal coach? He's helping him with pacing and timing throughout, so clearly they had a plan worked out that takes 100% attention to do correctly. When you're one of the best CrossFitters out there, that's the kind of attention you get.
Everyone else seems okay with it there - must be a reason.

What's with all the sparring? It's Maleolo! It's on class....I'm just as much a purest as the next guy but look at it this way....Camille is being ignored? That's what's crazy. The coach is ignoring Camille! In the voice of Will Ferrell/Old School to the coach... "yerr craaazy man...yer crazzy, but I like you"

Wow...hard to win here at CrossFit these days. Either someone has bad form or their coach making sure all their reps are legit is ignoring the class.

As that coach "ignoring" the rest of the class I'd have to agree with comment #21 and make sure you know the whole story before posting your thoughts to the world.

Comment #23 - Posted by: Jason Ackerman at October 31, 2010 6:03 AM

If you knew "Austin's Coach" Jay you would know that he is a great guy who hosts a lot of high end CrossFit events with the utmost enthusiasm, at his CrossFit facility in Albany: One of them being the "Northeast Regionals." I've met him and Austin and they're great people. In watching that video, and based on the fact that there's not one, but TWO game's competitors, I would assume that it was likely a "class" of coaches who are just thrilled to be training with athlete's of that caliber. In knowing Jay from many events, I HIGHLY doubt he would ignore his other athletes, and I highly doubt that Austin being the coach he is would allow it...

Comment #24 - Posted by: Suzanne Traitz F/39yrs/5'4"/145lbs at October 31, 2010 6:24 AM

My thought was that they had that coach qualifying every rep in response to the constant nit-picking of form that has been posted here about his previous demos. Some people just love to complain no matter what you do.

Amazing performance & from his previous positive responses here to the "sour grapes" negative feedback it's clear he's thinking like Colin Cowherd says: "Don't let people with no lives ruin yours"

Sunday musings...

1) Armadillo. We could all use a thicker skin, myself included.

2) Natural. Are you a natural athlete? Know one? Someone who can do pretty much ANYTHING physical and do it really well, that's my definition of a natural. My brother is like that, truly gifted. When he applies himself (as he has done in basketball as a young man and golf forever) the results are astonishing.

The cool thing, at least for me, is watching those natural athletes when they run up against the limit of their natural ability. What do they do they? Some pack it in, so accustomed to succeeding without any extra effort they lack the ability or will (or both) to use their natural gift as the foundation and WORK to achieve more.

Others, like my brother, accept the challenge and apply themselves to achieving whatever the absolute limit of nature and nurture might be. Character lies there, in that pursuit, for us all.

3) Fit. In a similar vein I am reminded once again of the vast variety of goals we have here, chez Crossfit. My goal is simply to be physically fit, healthy, able to thrive tomorrow regardless of what tomorrow might entail, and to do so for as many tomorrows as possible. Others need or want more, but at 50 I'm actually asking quite a lot.

You see, I am on a plateau at the moment. I am becalmed at this particular level, one that is frankly a little less lofty than others I have occupied, due to a LACK of will. I have quite simply not been able to go as hard or as far or as fast as I have in the recent past, and I believe my inability to do so is nothing but a failure of will. I'm having trouble leaving myself in a heap, trouble pushing the intensity needle into the red.

Nothing has changed about that red zone, that dark place I visit that builds both fitness and resilience. What is lacking for the moment is the willingness to go there. I'll find it again, maybe even this afternoon in the WB/SU/BackExt WOD. Maybe just saying it out loud is all that is needed.

Our goals may be different, and our outcomes may differ in terms of degree, but how we achieve them, as Crossfitters, always comes back to intensity.

I'll see you next week...

Most of the people on here who have negative comments and think they know more than the elite athletes are usually people who never accomplished anything in their lives. If you know so much about crossfit, why not try to qualify for the games? You are the kind of people that get really frustrated with your favorite NFL teams every Sunday afternoon and think you know better than the head coach. Grow up and stop talking trash about these athletes.

This WOD really helped me with my form on cleans. I actually thought jerking would make this WOD easier but, to my amazement doing a thruster was much more productive and helped work on my explosiveness out of the bottom.

Not that my time was anything to write home about but, considering that 165 is about the max I can do a legitimate squat clean with I was happy with my ability to get under the bar as fatigue setr in.

I did 10 clean and jerks with 45# bar and shoulder and wrist hurt so I decided on a different workout.

Helen a la rue Chartrand (our block)

3 rounds of
650m run
21 1 pood USA kb swings
5 forehead to bar pullups.(yeesh!)

time: 16:29

The good?
First time doing over the head kb swings in a long time.
Hanging from the pullup bar didn't hurt.
The bad?
Running wasn't exactly swift and the extra 750m made for a longer workout.
The ugly?
Forehead to bar..... that's gotta change....

We will be doing this WOD today after the Bronco (yes I know they suck) game.

This is not an attempt to bash as I know I am very far away from fully understanding CF. I am very much a beginner and still looking to better myself here. Please keep in mind this is the reason for my question.

In watching the WOD video with Malleolo I am having a hard time discerning the difference of what he is doing and thrusters. In reading the title of the WOD, I expected times to be higher than this due to the setup at the top for the jerk.

Is there a minor movement that I am missing? I just don't think my "eyes" are really able to see the details in all CF movements. If I am not able to see the difference I know my times are going to be very high. I will be setting up at the top for the jerk. Sort of a pause I guess... Is this wrong?

Some insight would be greatly appreciated before this WOD works me over.

TIA

Gotta say...I watched the video...I'll have to go back and watch it again because I didn't even notice Austin was in the video. It was probably a ploy by Jason and Austin because by putting Camille in the video, everyone wouldn't pay so much attention to range of motion and they would be distracted by her. But I'm sure there are some real die hard purists out there who will find plenty of faults. As for me, I looked at my watch at 3:04 and I still had 10 reps to go...that is movin'!

Bingo-

"The red zone, that dark place I visit..." nice picture painting through those words. So often my WOD times basically blow chunks compared to others. But then I need to recognize I am reaching my capacity and I am doing my best. My #1 measure of effectiveness is the muscle soreness the next day (or 2 or 3). It is pain but that pain has come to be a welcome friend.

and HUGE thanks to all my extended family at my local box that encourage me to navigate through that dark place I visit on a regular basis to get to the other side where there are always smiles and high-5's and the feeling of a job well done. It is only that which brings me back to do it again tomorrow.

Alright, I'm going to play devil's advocate again: hasn't it occurred to anyone that throwing or dropping the weight from shoulder height is both unnecessary and MORE difficult than riding it down. If you watch Camille on the WOD she goes much faster when she isn't dropping the weight uncontrolably. I know that bumper plates were created for a reason, but come on people. Dropping the weight from eight feet in the air doesn't make you any more "fit." It has the potential to be dangerous and DOEs damage bars....I've seen the same phenomenon when DBs are used as kettlebells and then tossed needlessly.....NOT COOL.

As the athlete in the video right behind Austin and Camille and a coach at Albany Crossfit, I can tell you Ackerman was coaching Austin for this particular WOD to ensure proper range of motion. We all had about 20 other people in the room watching and cheering us on.

In no way did me, or the other coaches and athletes that hit that WOD during lunchtime of a Weekend Crossfit Revival feel neglected.

The fact that this workout was done in 3:01 is absolutely absurd.

As rx'd 7:54 .. strangely enough my forearms are just as sore as my hip flexors after this one. Also, I know that I need to work on the range of motion going all the way down on the squat cleans, but good workout overall .. definitely brought it to me today.

Also, got the look of wide eyes today at the globo-gym as I was trying to get myself through the last 5-7 reps of this one, they weren't sure wth was going on, it was glorious to watch.

Technically you are correct but if your drive on the squat is strong enough you will get the same dip, drive response out of the bar.
when he was fresh he would rebend to jump under the bar and catch it. But as he fatigued he did lock his knees more.

Ouch, this one hurt like Fran. I split this up into sets of 5, with forced breaks in between - but tried to keep the breaks really short. After the first of these, I was about 1 minute per 5 C&J's. Did most of these thruster-style instead of true "jerks", but as I fatigued, I didn't have enough coming out of the front squat, so the last 5-10 were all jerks. Missed on the first attempt on jerk #30, but caught it instead of dropping it. Rested in rack position for a few breaths, and then was able to get it on the second try, barely.

4 reps 175# (I cant add), 26 reps 155#

Time 16:05 (no bumpers)

I was warming up and thinking ok this going to suck then I hit start. 4 reps later Im thinking wow this is really going to suck, then it hit me. Im an idiot I had 2 45s and 4 10s on the bar, WTF. So I do basic math in my head and 135 + 40 = I Suck at math. Any way C&Js were TRUE C&Js, squat cleaned, stand up, jerk. Nothings wrong with the other methods its defintley faster but for me faster is not always better. I tend to F my self up going balls to wall on complex movements, i.e I tweaked my knee last week doing the C&J/cindy WOD.

DO WORK!!!

Did only 135lb clean and jerk but finished all 30 reps event though the bar bounced back at my right thumb and hurt the crap out of it...thought i broke it so that took a good 3 minutes out of my workout trying to let the pain pass and assess the damage...I didnt have the luxury of throwing the bar down since I dont have bumpers and I would brake the floor with the iron plates so had to let the bar down slowly each time and that tired me out quick. but my final time nonetheless was:
27:00 even.

Scaled to 125# = 16 minutes.

Right wrist really started getting pissed at me, so about 10 reps in, i had to start resting a few seconds (minutes?) between attempts to stretch and massage it out. Upshot is that the actual C&J felt nice and strong when I finally did it...until the wrist got pissed at me again. :S

Comment #225 - Posted by: dk 33/m/6'0"/212 at November 3, 2010 2:53 PM

Oh yeah...only about 1/3 of my reps were actually SQUAT C&Js, as holding my wrists in the catch position for the duration of a catch in the squat, or a post-catch squat, was murder. I did as many as I could as RX'ed, but easily 2/3rds were not.

Same as 236

I really had to focus on form on this one, the mental prep before each lift was awesomely daunting. I kept imagining Rippetoe/Burgener coaching me (I CF solo). Wish I had bumpers to let it down, too, that certainly made the time fly by faster.

The lift wasn't tough, for me, but performing without breathing (as is the CF par) was tough with form in mind. Thoroughly enjoyable WOD, and panic set in around the 10th rep. Relief and determination at rep 20. Rep 15 felt like I was climbing a mountain...
