Comment #4 - Posted by: Nate at October 4, 2010 5:05 PM

Is this a speed workout(with say 60 percent of max done as explosively as possible) or a max effort workout?

Comment #5 - Posted by: tom at October 4, 2010 5:18 PM

Thanks for the great live coverage of the USAW/CF event.

I'm wondering about the Friday archives, though. Will they be available later on or did something go wrong with those? (All I can see is the Saturday and Sunday archives.)

Bench Press - It's good to go globo once in a blue moon....What the hell is a blue moon anyway? I hope they have CrossFit there!

Comment #8 - Posted by: JD at October 4, 2010 5:22 PM

Globo gyms won't allow the benchpress now that it's CrossFit...

I heart this picture.

Comment #15 - Posted by: Kristen P at October 4, 2010 5:43 PM

@#8 Bluemoon: moon is on a 30 day cycle, in the event that a full moon occurs on the 1st of a month, you'll have two full moons in the same month. Doesn't happen very often, hence the term.
Looking forward to this WOD!!!! Maybe I'll get "meat-head" to actually spot me instead of pointing and laughing while I do my WOD, then sit back and watch him attempt to do a muscle up. LOL!!! More work, faster! Go heavy!!!!

Comment #16 - Posted by: ALX at October 4, 2010 5:43 PM

MEAT!!!!! Nice work. You made those lifts look easy. Congrats!

Comment #17 - Posted by: Adrian Bozman at October 4, 2010 5:57 PM

Does the picture show Matt Chan's knees way forward of his toes - isn't that considered improper form and bad for the knees? (heavy weight notwithstanding)

Comment #18 - Posted by: Mike at October 4, 2010 5:58 PM

I probably won't have a spotter. So I guess I will have to use dumbells. I realize I probably won't be able to lift as heavy w/ db's as with a barbell. Will I still get the same type of metabolic response?

Comment #19 - Posted by: james at October 4, 2010 6:01 PM

I just wanted to let you guys know that I just blasted my pecs.

Comment #20 - Posted by: Jay at October 4, 2010 6:06 PM

Are these sets increasing the weight each time? Or a static weight throughout the workout? Been crossfitting for a month and like it so far.

Comment #21 - Posted by: JROD at October 4, 2010 6:10 PM

Awesome Matt!

Comment #22 - Posted by: james.patrick [M/48/66"/135] at October 4, 2010 6:13 PM

@ Mika:

In Olympic lifts the knees almost always go past the toes. It is only bad for your knees if you go too heavy before you are conditioned for it. Just like going below parallel is only bad if you have too much weight on the bar.

Comment #23 - Posted by: Nick at October 4, 2010 6:13 PM

Matt,
I enjoyed watching you compete this weekend. You kicked some ass and took some names- congrats. I dig the new shirt - thanks,

At Dani. Matt weighed in at 94kg. Burgener talked about this in his videos how they were going to be a little relaxed on weight classifications. But he still weighed under 94kg

Does it matter? He won the WHOLE thing.
Yup, be mad at the champion because YOU didn't compete.
Really CrossFitters??? I thought we were a community. But yet everyday, someone picks apart a picture due to perceived bad form or whatever.

Comment #34 - Posted by: Jessica at October 4, 2010 7:08 PM

#5...good question. This can be done either for speed or for power. If you know how to use bands or chains for dynamic benching definitely give it a go. Try using 50-55% of you 1RM.

If you don't have chains or bands you could try using 85-90% (depending on your endurance) of your 1RM and bang out 2 reps every minute. 90% is roughly a 3RM and 85% is around a 5 rep max.

Comment #35 - Posted by: AC at October 4, 2010 7:10 PM

#26 Dani,

There was no shadiness about it. There were strict USAW rules were enforced on the lifts. But when it came to weight classes, if people weighed in differently than what they originally signed up for they were allowed to move. And that happened for several people.

If you have ever met Matt Chan, you would find him to be a humble, genuine guy--never one for shadiness. His work ethic doesn't need it.

Congratulations to Matt and all the other competitors! It was an amazing weekend and I can't wait to see more in the future!

Comment #36 - Posted by: Joylyn at October 4, 2010 7:13 PM

congratulations to all xfit athletes at USAW/crossfit competition, esp Chris Spealler @ 62kg his weightlifting total of 200kg would of tied him with the 5th place in the 2009 USA weightlifting competition for his weight category, amazing athlete

Comment #37 - Posted by: Rich at October 4, 2010 7:14 PM

I have a similar question to #17. Without a spotter would it be more beneficial to do it with lighter weight on a bar, or use dumbbells?

Comment #39 - Posted by: Blanco at October 4, 2010 7:18 PM

I have a quick question about doing towel pu's. I can do about 30 or more pullups before failure but when it comes to towel pu's I can't even do 1. Is there a trick to this or do I just need to work on strength

Comment #40 - Posted by: MT Dave at October 4, 2010 7:24 PM

if I'm looking at the correct results, Spealler's total of 200kg would of placed 3rd in the 62 kg category in the 2010 USA championships

Comment #41 - Posted by: Rich at October 4, 2010 7:27 PM

-Dani

The Matt Chan would have won at 94kg or 105kg. He offically weighed in at 92.87kg. Please refer to the results for any other questions.

Great job this weekend Matt. You made us all proud!

Nice total Matt. I met Matt when I did my level one cert and he put up with all my questions and I had a ton and gladly answered them all. Impressive work ethic and genuinely wants us all to succed.

In regards to his knees, they are foreward but also appear to be forcing out laterally which eases the force on the knee. This is typical of O-lifting.

just a word to the (un)wise... weight must be made at the time of weigh-ins, for the weight class in which the athlete was registered... refer to IFW rule 6.3.13.. Chan lifted amazingly, and tore apart the metcon, but he should have been out of the comp or in 105kg category... according to the rules

I was inspired by Graham Holmberg's interview so I tweaked today's WOD a little. Between each bench-press set, I did 20 single-arm KB swings to take up the minute rest period. My bench numbers were:

165, 165, 165, 170, 170, 170, 175, 170, 170, 170

Then I did 20 muscle ups in 3:30.

Comment #83 - Posted by: Ben 31/5'5"/150 at October 5, 2010 7:47 AM

Just a thought or note on bench pressing. Bench pressing does not come up much on Crossfit.com or in many other CF gyms for that matter. It is largely regarded in the CF community as a nonfunctional lift and therefore is not considered as important and even as a "globo" movement. I have been an avid crossfitter for 2 years now, sticking to 3 on 1 off consistently for 2 years. I am totally in agreement with almost everything here. One of my few complaints is the bad rep bench press gets here by a large percentage of CFers. While bench press may not have a lot of whole life practicality, it is the single best movement/exercise for total, overall upper body raw strength (not confused with power). It is the only upper body lift that allows one to press such a large amount of weight away from their body. While it is true that a lot of bench press can inhibit the snatch and other olympic lifts, the snatch does not elicit the same demand on the upper body as a whole or allow one to press as much weight away from themselves. So in a direct, real life application, bench press may not correspond as much as say deadlift or other movements but from the standpoint of just total overall upper body strength, which allows easier handling of other weight/movements and overall capability, it is a very functional movement. Just a thought and observation.

@Chris - I'm mad at the champ because I didn't compete? that doesnt even make sense.

I'm sure Matt is a great guy, I've heard nothing but good things about him. But here's why the SITUATION is shady. Matt did not weigh in with 94's, he was there at the event walking around, he just wasn't weighing in. Then after the 94's lift and after he's had a longer time to make weight and see what everyone lifts he goes and weighs in, makes 94 at that time but then doesn't have to lift until the next day where he competes as the lone 94 on sunday. I'm sure there are wrestlers and fighters out there, when you have to cut to make weight, the difference between having 2 hours to recover and compete and a day to recover and compete is HUGE, cannot be overstated. Ya, he's a beast, he won the whole thing, problem is the guy who took second in the 94 should be first because he played by the rules and won his division. There may be reasons he couldn't weigh in and compete with the other 94's, i don't know, all i know is with the info we have now, the situation looks very shady.

I agree with Dani. Matt is probably a great guy and it's not about him. One of the competitors in the 94k group is from my box. Most of the guys in this class were not happy about it. It probably would not have made a difference, but we will never know.

I haven't bench pressed in more than two years. In fact, it was utter boredom with bench pressing and the conventional globo routine (as well as a sore shoulder) that led me to CrossFit.

I was absolutely amazed today to knock through my rounds with 205 pounds. I was amazed when I was adding weights in my warm up and looking for a starting weight: no pain, and the bar kept going up in the air better than it had, literally, in years, even when I was globo-ing.

I credit Louie's instructional videos and K-Star's comments, as well as all those burpees, dips, push ups, and muscle ups as time has gone by.
Knowledge is power, and the right kind of work brings all kinds of power.

Bench press started out as my weakest link the first time I did them a couple months ago. I could only do about 65 pounds. But I have been doing Tabata Bench Press every once in awhile and my PR almost doubled. Still low and well below my body weight. But, cool to know that those Tabatas work!

As RX 2-2-2-2-2-2-2-2-2-2, 1 minute rest between sets.

I was there on Saturday and watched most of the rest on the live stream. I believe it was the online commentators who said Matt Chan had to work the overnight shift Friday night and was walking around Saturday cheering on his wife and team with 2 hours of sleep.
Matt would have won on Saturday, next Saturday, a month from Saturday if he wanted to. He is that much of a firebreather.
Congrats to Matt and the rest of the competitors, you CF'ers tore it up.

Matt's lifting on Sunday was absolutely within the rules of the event. We had 180 competitors to get through so we decided long before the weekend began that everyone was lifting at a pre-determined time, no matter what they actually weighed in at. Matt originally thought he'd be a 105kg lifter, so he got scheduled with the 105 lifters. At the tech meeting he announced that he was going to change to 94. At that point, though, the schedule was already set.

This was considered a local USAW meet (for the weightlifting portion), and you can still compete at different weight classes if you don't make weight. This wouldn't be true for national meets, though.

Matt won that weight class by such a large margin that he could have competed at any time and no one in his weight class would have caught him. Now, if I was a gambling man, and Matt had his total first, I'd bet on Speal to find the extra reps and come out on top. But that's a different debate...

CF is obviously not anti-bench. I've been doing CF for about 1 month now and have benched for an entire workout twice (This and LInda).

W/U: bench press, 3x1 at 45-135-185#.

As Rx: 205-215-225-205-205-205-185-185-185-185#.

C/D: bench press, 5x2 at 185#.

Flared-up my left trap injury on the 225# set. Lowered the weight for the remaining sets, but it continued to bother me. Probably should have stopped after the flare-up, but it's so rare that I get to work on the BP. I didn't want to quit. In fact, I continued on with 5 additional sets at 185# just to get in some more work. The BP isn't one of my stronger lifts anyway, but I was hoping to hit 245# today. Oh well.

Not sure if we were supposed to build up like this as we are with similar 7 X 1's or 5 X 3's or if we were supposed to start heavy and stay at that weight (or close to) throughout.

Hey, thanks for all the congrats - the weekend was a blast. What a cool venue to hang out with a bunch of CrossFitters. Definitely knew I was at the right hotel right away - lots of broad shoulders and muscles.

Yeah, so I changed my weight class to the 105's ten days before the competition, which is why I lifted with them. I jumped on the scale at a cert. and weighed 217! By the time I weighed in I was 204.4 (~92kg). The official wrote me into the 94kg class. It's as simple as that.

Either way, it was super fun competing in my first weightlifting meet. The kg/lb conversion was tough, but the timing of the event was the biggest obstacle. Luckily, I got to lean on the Burgeners for help - thanks guys!

2nd day doing WOD ever - everything above 275 was a PR for me on a 1RM - I'm liking this stuff

decided on something similar but a little enjoyable..

55,65,65,70,70,70-65,65,65,65,70 in 33:00.
needed just a touch of assistance on all sets of 70. 65 was just a touch too easy and 70 for two reps was just a touch to heavy.

Male 6'4" 280

I cahnged the WOD a little to give less rest time, I used 30 second intervals as follows
225,235,245,255,265,275,285,295,305,315. I found it to be a little easy so I went up to 330, then I did Biceps and Triceps using the same principal but I went to 10X5 for each body part.

Resting 60 seconds between sets:

This was okay, but I feel as though I've lost strength while dropping weight through the Paleo diet. My spotter was a bit dubious and I couldn't tell if he was helping or not. It will be better next time.

Weight lifting routinge so followed up with:

12x3 wide grip kipping pullups.

Been awhile since I did a weightlifting routine. Nice little change from the blood and guts WODS!
