Lipson is strong, but not very solid ROM on those

Comment #3 - Posted by: Matt_in_Oz at August 28, 2010 5:19 PM

This Dave Lipson character should go a little deeper in his squats! And what's with the use of foul language? That's just uncalled for.

Comment #4 - Posted by: Dave Lipson at August 28, 2010 5:28 PM

I don't know I think his ROM is fine there, very strong. Also nice to see Froning has a hang of those rope climbs now nice work.

Comment #5 - Posted by: Paul at August 28, 2010 5:38 PM

I agree, Dave Lipson. That Dave Lipson character is suspect.

Hey Dave!
We met at Josh Everret's Oly lifting cert in Columbia.
Nice work on the squats, and don't worry, the ROM will get better as you increase the weight ;)

Look us up if you ever come to Japan!

Wounded Warriors is such a great program and it fills me with great pride to see it posted on Crossfit. Every bit of support helps our injured soldiers to Soldier On. If you're ever looking for ways to help, Soldier On is another great program that can always use support. http://www.cfpsa.com/en/psp/SoldierOn/index.asp

Dave,

Please don't listen to the haters who have nothing better to do and who can criticize in anonymity. "Wow" is all I can say.

I would pay money to hear Rip's analysis.

Comment #15 - Posted by: Tom R. at August 28, 2010 7:29 PM

Any suggestions to help a beginner add weight to an overhead squat quickly? I have a competition coming up, I can currently complete the posted event with 55lbs and would like to pull it up to 65lbs to try the event (in a few weeks). I would be so pleased if anyone has any helpful advice. Thanks.

steve_t #2,

Of course you can wear knee wraps, or a suit, or clown shoes if you want. This is not a competition, its about you getting better. Do whatever you want, then do the same thing next time if you want to compare, or not, its up to you. This is not natural powerlifting, and I think some would do well to remember that he had almost 2.5x bodyweight on the bar and is not a small man.

Knee wraps or not, ass to ankles or simply parallel, either way that was bad as hell.

No pr today, short by 10 lbs. Still glad for the lift, it felt great. Heavy at the end. On the 4th set the second rep went forward a bit and I had to fight it up.
5th set last rep I was in the hole and started to push out and kind of gasses out and dropped back in the hole and kind of bounced out of it, if that makes sense. Good depth all.

Is it wrong that you can't do more squat weight than the deadlift. I see a lot of people doing big squat weights. Well look forward to more challenging lift days.

Comment #51 - Posted by: Jerad at August 29, 2010 9:48 AM

I just started crossfit back up after almost 7 months off. I was doing P90X. I am in the Air Force and my squadron stupervision told us no more P90X, we just need to focus on running...really? I mean, I know running counts overall but we still need to be in shape...so I started crossfit back up instead. I have Osgood-Schlatters in both knees and it affects my right knee the most so I had to do this exercise with low weights. 75-95-115-135-185. I know I COULD do much more than 185 if my right knee wasn't so bad.

I was looking for some opinions on the SKINS compression gear. I am interested in the stuff but can someone give me the pros of the SKINS wear over say-UA or Nike compression wear? The SKINS stuff is expensive.

Sunday musings...

1) Just Breathe. Pearl Jam. Just Saying.

2) Hole. There's a hole in my soul right now. I know it will get smaller, fill in, but it just opened up so it's really quite obvious at the moment. My youngest, Lil'bingo, is off to college. Mrs. Bingo and I dropped him and "Lovely Daughter" at the 'Hurst' yesterday leaving a packed and ready to fly "The Heir" as the only progeny on premises.

I'm not sad, mind you, nor am I frightened like I was when "Lovely Daughter" left for her freshman year. Nope, not relieved either, the emotion felt by both of his parents when "The Heir" went off to Denver. It's not an emptiness or a feeling of a door closing, the things that Mrs. Bingo has expressed as she has said several times: "All I ever wanted to be is a Mom; I know it's not so, but it feels like that's just done now." It's just a hole.

Do you have a special person in your life? Remember how you just couldn't imagine that you could love them even a little bit more only to discover that each day brought a little bit more? What happens when children enter your world? Does your heart expand, your love for your spouse the same, maybe even expanding still while you add more love for the kids? Or is there really a finite amount of love to give, a bucket with little compartments and a ladle to mix it up, move it around?

It's not that you, I, love them any less because they aren't here at the table, there's just less of an opportunity to DO the loving. You know, exercise the love domain. That's the hole, I think. What happens now? Does the love of Mrs. Bingo start to expand again, grow at the rate it once did in the days BK, before kids? Fill the hole? Does the hole just slowly close?

No teachable moment here my Brothers and Sisters. Nothing but one among you here at the Crossfit table, talking out loud among friends in a place I feel at home. Parenting at the speed of life, pedal to the floor, lucky to have a co-pilot who has always filled the holes.

I'll see you next week...

W/U: 45# back squat, 1x10; 135# back squat; 1x5.

As Rx: 225-245-265-285-305#.

C/D: 325# back squat, 3x1; 170# back squat, 1x20; K-Star MobWOD, no. 7.

I don't know if I had lazy form or what, but I tweaked my L-low back injury during the 45# w/u. Didn't seem to effect the rest of my squats, but I'm feeling the soreness now. Think I'll hit the foam roller and maybe throw some ice on it.

Dave's depth is fine. Powerlifting squats only need to go until the thigh is parallel. I understand the depth criticism coming from the guys who only do Oly squats or "ass to grass". We can't move as much weight that way as you can with the Powerlifters squat.

Every gun that is made, every warship launched, every rocket fired signifies in the final sense, a theft from those who hunger and are not fed, those who are cold and are not clothed. This world in arms is not spending money alone. It is spending the sweat of its laborers, the genius of its scientists, the hopes of its children. This is not a way of life at all in any true sense. Under the clouds of war, it is humanity hanging on a cross of iron. --Dwight Eisenhower, April 16, 1953

no back squats today. Body is exhausted. squat form is still a little "soft" at the bottom and don't want to risk low back injury by adding weight to the movement yet.
