I owe the community an apology. The other night I said some negative things about alternate work out styles and I houldnt have. I was wrong and I'm sorry. This community is supposed to be positive and I lost sight of that. It will never happen again sorry guys.
And on that note 3 2 1 go.
Hooyah, Leon. It takes a man to admit they acted foolishly.
Nice Back Lever in that pic. I am still working on mine. I have a decent straddle front lever coming along though :)
K Clever at 75#. More and more impressed every day.
I love the older CF videos in which faults are pointed out. Brendan's performance is almost textbook and yet they point out all sorts of flaws. I would like to see more of this as it helps me be a better athlete. One watches the newer videos and can't help but think that CF has lost its way to a certain degree... Tomorrow I am going to go as fast as possible while not sacrificing technique!!!
Btw, love this year's featuring top Games finishers for daily demos. Its probably the most useful and inspiring thing .com has done in several years, IMO
That video really showed the difference in the distance the barbell traveled between Jay and Rob. It is something that jumped out at me. Either way excellent work by both guys.
Great effort, not to nitpick but Rob's workout should be SDHP and shoulder to overhead, it says push jerks which isn't what was done they touched on why in the from the vault video. Still 3 times as fast as I could though. I tried this workout once long ago 75 pounds started to feel pretty heavy.
The workout says Push Jerks!
The vault video says follow the rules! The race for fastest time at all costs makes things a little sloppy. It takes skill and mental awareness to actually do all the jerks without pressing or push pressing.
Love the video of Brendan :). His videos are what got me stuck on CrossFit in the first place..
That's my man! I know he'd crush that old time these days, too.. And I'd love to watch him do it.
The Barbers back and getting some well deserved mainpage ink. Awesome work guys.
Classic Crossfit, I love it. I am going to make sure to do push jerks and nothing else, comparing the videos I can see the difference.
DO WORK!!!
Yep, push jerks for me, it is what the workout calls for, not overhead anyway.
The rules and standards of CrossFit's exercises and WODs are starting to get blurry to me after watching the last few days worth of videos from our top athletes. Do we still complete the ROM of each lift or what? C'mon guys.
Whole lotta wod demo's, cool beans!
I have never done sdhp's so i have to ask about proper technique. is it a close grip maintaining the lumbar curve and ending around the chin? i also noticed in the video that the flaw in the technique in the vault video was that he was using his arms too early.... when do you use them? thanks
Hell yeah! This is how every day should be on main page, tons of sweet videos! Thanks CF. Good WOD to prep for FGB 5.
Hell yeah! This is how every day should be on main page, tons of sweet videos! Thanks CF. Good WOD to prep for FGB 5.
Yes Rob Orlando!!!!! Where's holmberg?
16 Leon,
Check the "Exercises & Demos" tab on the left side of the mainpage. All the exercises are there.
Search 'high pull' and you'll find 4 choices to learn from.
if they were push jerks as shown in todays wod by jason and rob, then I give up.
#14 m temesy and #20 mr flakey offer legitimate inquiry and comment but i guarantee following posts will bring the hate and howl them down as 'not understanding crossfit'.
do mechanics, consistency and intensity ring a bell, hq?
also, the sdhp's were a bit off. elbows over the bar is the standard, no ?
Leon # 16
after you fully extend your knees and hips and you shrug the shoulders.
here's a simple way to put it. let your legs/hips get the bar up. arms just follow through.

comment #27 that seems odd what was the point in saying that, go away!
Oops, nevermind it got deleted.
I like Barbers mod with the kettlebell. I love getting a kettlebell in my wod! makes for a nice change. Way to go! Routine is the enemy! 3 2 1 GO!

Yeahhhhhhhhhhhh Jocie!!!! Some mainsite love!! I hope I can bounce off a beautiful offspring and 2 months later get some mainsite love! Wonderful inspiration for moms all over the world! xoxoxoxoxoxoxox,
LP
so its just shoulder to over head? or are we supposed to be training the push jerk? cycling push jerks for speed is actually tougher and slower than push pressing
It seems like if Holmberg used hip snapping motion more in his KB swing, he could have done better. Crazy to even think that.
When I first saw Brendan's video with a time of 8:20, I was struck by how much longer it took him to complete the workout as compared with today's top athletes. The comparison between the videos however is dramatic. On the SDHPs, Brendan pulled each rep an additional 4 or 5 inches higher and he performed true push jerks.
4:43 I think i totally skipped the round of 15 reps
@#33- Agreed.
Emphasis should be put on 'Push Jerk' and specifically not Push Press like in the demo with Brendan Gilliam. Seriously changes the workout when compared to the push press being done on the Hybrid demo video.
Anyone got the song from the vault vid?
Should the SDHP be touch and go? If Rob failed on most reps.
if this wod does not say for time, do we still time it?
Dont the elbows lead the wrists in the sumo deadlift high pulls? I always thought we form a V with our arms with our elbows higher than our wrists---if so cmon on the form or have some coaching in hteose videos and start correcting the form I dont care what athlete is in it--Rob's form looks horrible if i am correct in the form thing, and those were not push jerks either so thast time doesnt match the wod

Felt strong but winded. I followed the workout with a 1/2 mile run and sit-up workout. Is that too much????
Agree with Rob. Jocelyn knocked it out of the park. Inspiring. Always awesome to combine any of the 3 FM categories in a couplet.
Warmup- 4 miles, 27:00 minutes in the Bangkok heat. 15 minutes rest: As Rx'd: 9:49- took way too much rest between the first few rounds...great one!
Veera/16/M/68/135- more and more impressed by this kid's attitude on a daily basis- his comment was, "My goal is to be as good as Rob Orlando." 16:04 w/ 45 lbs. Today was the first day everything clicked for him on SDHP and Push Jerk- mind-body connection made on those two fundamental movements!
How long ago was the vault video done? If it's around 3 years ago, the Crossfit Games were in their infancy and I would think that the main motivation for these workouts would have been to better your own time as comparing times between athletes is kind of useless. It would be almost impossible to have this workout in a competitive situation as what judge could decide the difference between a push press or push jerk at high speeds?
The Games have benefitted Crossfit but I can't help but feel that the quest for speed has altered a lot of the exercises... air squats and burpees to name just two.
What I love about crossfit is that I can get fit training around 1/2 an hour a day, that it fits into my life and other commitments, that the equipment needs are minimal, that exercises are preformed to strict standards and if you can't do that, then scale. The whole premise is that you are competing against yourself and you mark your own improvement.
Is Elite Crossfitting becoming a different sport as the athletes generally don't do the above?
OK... I just read this over and as much as I hate to admit it, I am a recreational crossfitter. And, just as in any other sport, there is a BIG difference between a recreational athlete and an elite one (except it is very rare that a recreational athlete has better form than an elite one). I am by no means saying my form is better than competitive crossfitters, but I would say that Brendan Gillam's was. Did he ever compete in the Games?
I'm not a puker, but it was close. it seems shredded mini wheats and coffee is an ill advised pre-workout meal. 15:09 as rx'ed.

Havnt worked out like this pre-breakfast ever and won't do it again. 25+ 75#'s
I love Brendan's video. Very helpful for beginners. Also makes me think about tightening up technique, which is always good. I wouldn't really contend with poor form done at an intensity as high as some of the new elite athletes, only the standards of range and type of movement. When in try a wod like this I don't try to move with perfection, only within the required standard maintaining relative safety. It is a shorter time domain with a light weight and it can be done at a high speed. Longer wods I might concentrate more on form and efficiency. All the videos are impressive and demonstrate different aspects of performance.

After reading comments, including Rob's, I have to defend those that are form fanatics. Not everyone is blessed with resilient joints and for those that aren't, bad form leads to injuries. Not that Rob's form matters, if he is not hurting himself, but the main site should make an effort to highlight videos in which form is ideal.
In defense of Rob, clearly he broke form for speed's sake, and I applaud him for that... How else are you going to go faster? It's ironic that he is being personally criticized for form with #75 lbs, when his form is exemplary and perfect in the 200+ lb range.
Crossfitters, stay critical about form and technique, but don't make it personal.
23:30, as Rx'd, should've done pack at 55 but need to improve shoulder strength so I sacrificed time here and was day 4 since I can't work out the next 2 days :(

2 months after a c-section and Jocelyn is hitting WODs as Rx'd!? I know women who have used the "I just had a baby" excuse for a year. I will be sure and show my wife this video to motivate her when she needs it.
I'm not looking forward to this WOD as my shoulders are fried. I will admit right now though that I will be doing my best to put the bar from my shoulder to overhead in the fastest, safest way possible while maintaining good midline stability, having a good active shoulder at the top and a fully open and exetended hip. I'm pretty sure that will mean I'll end up doing some presses, push presses and push jerks just to keep it going. I love all of the arguments out there but CF is a very personal journey we are all just witnesses to each others voyage. Do what you can to be as fit as you can, keep it safe, and enjoy each others successes.

Rob push jerks or no push jerks you are still a beast. When I can do over 300lbs x 3 push presses in 45 seconds like you did at the regionals, maybe then I will complain about the way you handle a WOD. Considering that will probably never happen, thanks for inspiring a lot of us to go and give it our all for every WOD.

my 2 cents about the Videos, great effort in all the videos, In Rob's video I wouldn't have counted alot of the SDHP becuause in some of them the bar didn't touch the floor, still guarantee you that ROB will break the 5 or minute mark if he make them all touch the floor, Also Rob's form in the concerning the push and jerk is good, however he is not doing push and jerks, he is push pressing, As strong as he is, I put money on the table that even if Rob does the WOD with push and jerks he can probabbly beat 98% or 99 % of most of the people doing this WOD. the guy is a beast. another beast that no one has say anything about it is Pat Barber, Pat you are a beast, I hope your wrist gets better. have a nice one everybody.
SANTI
10:51 as rx'd however I do admit I was not consistent with push jerk vs. push press. It was too easy to fall into a rhythym with PP, PJ was a bit awkward which is no doubt the point.

Sumos were hard, but not to bad, I got the first set unbroken and small breaks after, I think I broke the 18 once at 5 reps, and just kept pulling.
The jerks were harder then I though. It was real breathy and not real fast, it was hard to get a fast rythum on them. It is a wierd movement to string together for me. It was jerk, stand recover breath jerk again, I tried to just recover and jerk at the same time, but I would rack it and then get my shoulders set with the bar on them for the next rep.

I love CrossFit and and I'm a big fan of Pat Barber, so I hate to make a negative comment, but feel I have to. I am a kettlebell specialist and watching Pat's so called KB Push Jerks made me cringe a little! Jerking that way will surely lead to injury. The kettlebell Jerk is initiated with the elbow on the hip and the KB in front of the shoulder, not behind.
I would love to see KB's more in CrossFit WOD's, but feel the CrossFit community needs to become better educated on how to use kettlebells correctly, safely, and efficiently. Below is a link to a video of me performing Clean & Jerks. You will see a distinct difference in the Jerk compared to Pat's technique. This is far safer and much more effective.

I used Orlandos Low elbows, wider grip technique due to having elbows that don't like to close rapidly. Bar went above clavicles on each rep.
Shouldve gone barefoot on this one, the feet cramped up in my running shoes.
