God bless Navy Chief Special Warfare Operator (SEAL) Adam Lee Brown and his family
I was afraid I was gonna see his Hero WOD sooner or later. RIP Warrior
I was afraid I was gonna see his Hero WOD sooner or later. RIP Warrior
Rest in Peace...we are forever in debt to you
Looking at it thought it wasn't that bad for a chipper, realized it was for two rounds...wow.
Hitting it hard tomorrow.
RIP.
Some wods when I read them they look, yeah yeah not so hard. Then when you dig in it turns into another butt kickin. Not this one, the wod jumps right off the computer screen and tells me, stand by brother this one is straight up hard as hell. Doing this rx is another story. I would love to see a handfull of our congressmen or women follow in the foot steps of these brave men for a couple days. Maybe, just maybe it would cast a different amount of support these guys need. Foreign aid B.S. Support our troops.
MCPO RET
whoa. hard isnt the word for this wod. my jesus. and whats better is that i have the practical portiion of my state testing to become a firefighter. im just going to be incapacitated tomorrow. worth it for the hero.
thank you hero.
Thank you for the love and courage you gave for our country. I'm thankful for CrossFit to honor you and all the other brave and beautiful fighters because it reminds me to be passionate to pray for you and your families.... "May God be with you for power and victory and peace for your soul"
can feel the suck factor on this one already!!! Yeehaw!
Rest In Peace Chief. My prayers are with his family, friends, and teammates.
Awesome combo/Love deadlifts,bench presses...RIP
I had the pleasure of meeting Adam Brown last year. In addition to being a true hero, he was a wonderfully nice and very funny guy (he told me he was planning on having his injured eye replaced with a glass eyeball featuring and Arkansas Razorback...I'm still not sure if he was serious or not). He will be sorely missed by all. Thanks to the CrossFit team for honoring him and his family.
I go to the University of Arkansas myself, i was wondering why the last 2 WOD were so easy... well now i know. This is going to crush... and by crush i mean i will be surprised if i make it. RIP fellow Razorback we will all be forever in your debt.
Good dude, wish he was still here. Def. have to put out for this one and embrace the suck.
A. Bain, knowing him I'm sure he was serious about the glass eye.
Will post my time when I do it later.
I looked at this and thought OMG. But understanding that I am doing this for men like Adam that fight every day so that I can "Decide" to do or not to do a workout is a blessing. I can't wait to honor our troops tomorrow!! RIP and GOD BLESS AMERICA
RIP brother. Gonna rip this one for a fellow Razorback. WPS
Fair winds Adam, may the Halls of Valhalla treat you better than this world.
RIP
Travel tomorrow, will have to make this up to you. Indebted for your service, somber for your sacrifice...
Rest in peace fellow Razorback, cannot wait to honor you with this WOD
Chief,
We are forever in your debt. Fair winds and following seas.
@ 27 how is it that there are so many razorbacks here who crossfit but we dont have a gym in Fayetteville? i know 10 + people who would attend....
went to buds with adam, he always put out 110% so this workout so this workout seems about right. hope to see you when i punch brother, we'll share some mead in valhalla
From one fire breather to another...rest in peace brother...only the fallen have seen the end of war.
My jaw just dropped...holy smoke. The Hero WOD's of Hero WOD's. I look forward to rx'ing this (perhaps in a few years) in honor of Adam.

I am a day behind so I will tackle this on Wed. I will give it everything I got.
Rest in peace Adam...no small number of people here in Hot Springs have great things to say about him. Like #3, I knew there had to be one for him at some point. Been trying to figure out the significance of "24." A friend and training partner here says it was his football number.
#29 - George...if you live in Fayetteville, it would only take you a few minutes to get to CF540 in Springdale.
Thank you Adam!! You will be in my thoughts during this WOD! God Speed!
Rest in peace brother...Semper Fi.
Absolutely no doubt that Adam went down fighting hard and took out more than a few bad guys.
Rest your oars Chief. We have the watch.
May God's grace be upon your wife and the two little ones.

Remember 'todays' WOD and the statements it is to short, lets do additional rounds etc...tomorrow you PAY...
RIP Mr Brown we shall never forget!
God Bless people like this man. There are so few that have the gift to do what this man did and be willing to do it. It's too bad we can't do more for the families of those who have sacrificed so much. God Speed Adam.
Rest in Peaceaa
I think the 24 theme is in reference to his funeral date of 24 March 2010.
Adam was the first person to tell me about Crossfit, words can't justify the "don't quit mentality" this guy had. He was a regular Cool Hand Luke. Cannot wait to honor you with this WOD. God Bless your family and thanks for your service.
i know i'm way behind...i havent done a wod since last monday. I worked about 85hrs last wk and i just couldn't get a workout in.

Fair winds and following seas on your journey, warrior!
I grew up with Adam. Rest assured, he was ALWAYS the consumate Warrior. Even when we were kids. To those wondering, the 24 was his football jersey number in school. RIP Adam, Godspeed and we'll meet again Brother.
@ #29 & #36, you can go to the Springdale gym but they don't follow mainsite and probably won't do this hero wod (I could be wrong).....I'm a trainer at the bentonville crossfit and we will do this wod Thursday! If you would like to play along, you are more than welcome! I'm sure it won't be long until somebody opens a crossfit gym in Fayetteville...
RIP Adam Brown!!!
That is one smoker workout! With seriously sad and soulful overtones. Adam was one good egg and this Army Ranger was fortunate enough to of know him a bit. He will be missed. I dread opening up the WOD and seeing someone I know or knew on the board for the day. It will be nice when this is all over and all the WOD's are named after ladies again.

Rest easy Chief. Thoughts and prayers to his family and friends.
2nd crossfit workout. Really, really hard.
DL 115 did all reps
box jump - did all reps but find a better thing to jump on
wall ball - did all reps but used a 8lb ball

Rest easy warrior.
You will be remembered.
Godspeed, Chief. Thank you for your service and sacrifice. We are indebted to you.

I had the distinct pleasure of serving with this warrior (SEAL) in Afghanistan in 05. Not only was he tougher than nails, he maintained a reputation as a stellar performer and was one of the most genuine, nicest guys I had ever met. It will be fitting doing this workout today in his honor. Warriors like this are the reason America can sleep well at night! God rest his soul.

So my wife has always worked out. She would do things like zumba, the elliptical machine while watching Ellen, and maybe some curls so she could work on her guns.
I finally convinced her to do CrossFit. I went easy on her at first and scaled the workouts so she could complete them.
Anyways yesterday she got her first real chest to the floor pushup in her life. Then she did a few more. After just 6 weeks or so of xfit. She was pretty happy with herself.
She also got 105lb deadlift for five reps at a bodyweight of 118lbs. 6 weeks ago she didn't like to hold an Olympic bar cause it hurt her hands.
now I've got her on the kool aid with me. She wants to do a dip without a band and do a real pullup eventually.
Just had to say thanks CrossFit. It's awesome to see my wife pushing herself and not working out like a "girl".
What can I sub for the wall balls? My gym would not allow them

Just a programming question (I'm off to hit this in 45 mins so it probably won't help me but I'm curious)...
Any idea what a 1RM DL would be for a typical as RX'ed CFer? I'm asking because my 1RM DL is 365lbs (I know...too low) so this is 48 reps at 80% my 1RM DL.
I know the "average CFer" (per the FAQ) is 175lbs and I know that's used for scaling some WODs, but this seems like the programming goal is to go HEAVY, so I'm curious what a targeted 1RM DL would be for a WOD that calls for 48 x 295lb DLs.
(I get that a "target" varies - hence differing completion times - but there must be some ballpark figure...?)
I know Crossfit isn't for everybody... very few in fact, but c'mon. I've been away for about 8 or 9 months and it USED to be that you may not need specialized equip or maybe you would have to sub something else... now I can hardly perform any WOD without special euip or already being a superstud. STARTING OFF WITH 300# DEADS????????????? And it's only 24 reps, really?????

110 had a great question, and it's something I've been wondering about. On some of these WODs, I can do the specified weights, but I have to do broken sets. Alternatively, I could drop the weight and do unbroken sets. Is there any good reason to prefer one over the other? It almost seems like a 6 and one-half dozen situation. Any recommendations?

RIP Adam. So sad for the family. This hero WOD is awesome. I see some scaling in the near future!!
#122 -- Todd...there is nothing wrong with scaling. Even Spealler scales the weight on a WOD like "Mr. Joshua" for instance. Heard it straight from his mouth at a Level 1. This is a HERO WOD. When have they ever been easy?

Below you'll find the column by Amy Schlesing for the Arkansas Democrat Gazette that appeared on March 25th. I emailed her and she forwarded the article to me so that I could repost it here.

Fallen SEAL died a hero, mourners told
AMY SCHLESING ARKANSAS DEMOCRAT-GAZETTE
HOT SPRINGS — Chief Petty Officer Adam Lee Brown spent much of his 12-year Navy career fighting battles that will never be known in places never mentioned.
Brown, a special warfare operator, was in one of those battles on St. Patrick’s Day, and died defending fellow U.S. Navy SEALs against a heavily armed Taliban force somewhere in Afghanistan.
“He fell protecting his teammates,” said Chief Special Warfare Operator John Faas, the SEAL team leader that day. “Adam died a hero.”
SEALs are the U.S. Navy Special Operations Command’s highly trained and covert fighting force. Brown enlisted in the Navy in 1998 and became a SEAL in 2000 — after nearly two years of training.
Faas escorted Brown’s body home to Hot Springs from Afghanistan. Brown, 36, was memorialized Wednesday at Hot Springs Baptist Church and buried in a quiet cemetery in the hills west of town.
He is survived by his wife, Kelley; his son, Nathan; daughter Savannah, all of Virginia, where he was stationed; his parents, Larry and Janice Brown; his sister, Manda; and brother, Shawn.
Since the beginning of the wars in Iraq and Afghanistan, 82 Arkansans have died in the war zones, including 65 who died as a result of enemy fire.
Brown was the third Arkansan to die in battle in Afghanistan this month.
U.S. Army Sgt. Jonathan Richardson, 24, of Bald Knob was buried Tuesday at the Arkansas State Veterans Cemetery in North Little Rock. He served with the 3rd Brigade, 101st Airborne Division.
Sgt. Vincent L.C. Owens, 21, of Fort Smith, died March 1. He was assigned to the 101st Airborne Division (Air Assault) at Fort Campbell, Ky.
On Wednesday, fellow sailors and SEALs traveled to Hot Springs to honor Brown and support his family at his funeral.
“Adam, we miss you, brother,” Faas said. “We miss your smile and your crazy eye. ... In the days to come, we will miss your tirelessness and fearlessness under fire.”
Brown’s “full throttle” personality and dangerous job resulted in several injuries over the years — all of which he overcame — from the loss of an eye to reconstructed ankles and knees and near-amputation of all fingers on one hand.
“Adam was the hardest man that I have ever met,” he said. “And in true SEAL fashion, he would not quit. He would not give up.”
Only a few know of the work Brown did. The rows of ribbons on the uniform he was buried in tell part of the story — one filled with combat and courage. Medals for valor are only awarded for heroic actions under fire.
Over the past decade he was awarded the Bronze Star with Valor; the Joint Service Commendation Medal with Valor; the Purple Heart; the Defense Meritorious Service Medal; the Joint Service Achievement Medal; five Navy and Marine Corps Achievement Medals; two Iraq Campaign medals; three Afghanistan Campaign medals; two Global War on Terrorism Medals; and two combat action badges.
Heath Vance, one of Brown’s childhood friends, told the crowd that Brown’s courage was only one side of a complex man who balanced his life with faith.
“Most importantly, his love and commitment to his family should serve as an example to all men,” he said, fighting tears that wouldn’t stop. “Adam poured his soul into getting the most out of life.”
Brown was known for his kindness and compassion as much as he was for his toughness and fearlessness.
“He will always be my best friend,” said Lt. Cmdr. Jeff Buschmann, who lives with the Browns in Virginia and also grew up with Brown in Hot Springs. “Adam was the toughest man I ever met. ... He was the most selfless person I ever met.”
Buschmann said he hopes people remember Brown “more for the compassionate person he was than for the crazy person he was or the hard person he was.”
A slideshow played on bigscreen televisions, showing Brown sleeping with his infant daughter on his chest. As the pictures of the family rolled by, his daughter started to wail. The SEALs and sailors filling several rows in the chapel began to break down, one by one.
“Daddy!” Brown’s son, Nathan cried as the pictures continued. “Make it stop. Make it stop ...”
Faas looked out at Brown’s parents, sitting before the flagdraped coffin, and spoke of Brown’s deep and unwavering Christian faith.
“He is an example to all of us,” he said of Brown’s unit, Gold Team, 2nd Special Warfare Group.
Then he looked at Brown’s widow.
“Kelley, Adam was our brother. You are our sister,” he said. “We will support your every need, great or small.”
And then he promised Brown’s young children he would tell them the stories of their father when the time is right. To tell them what Brown accomplished, who he was and what he meant to them.
Then he looked out at his fellow SEALs in the crowd.
“Tomorrow we avenge him,” he said, adding that they would dispatch the enemy to “hell’s doorstep.”
Adam-thank you for the gift of our freedom--your loss can't be measured.May you go on in your children.

Controlled drop on deadlift and power clean (no bumpers); full hip extension at top of box jump; wall ball squat to an 11-inch box (below parallel); bar to chest then to lock-out on bench press. Very hot and humid.
I am not exaggerating when I say the bench pressing took up at least half the time. It's just not an exercise I do too often. Most of it was one rep and rest, one rep and rest... Everything else in this WOD was done at a good pace, though the second round of cleans was a little slower than it could have been.

Bench is what got me the most, and I might not be able to walk in the morning. weight touched the ground between each clean, did not do a squat though, normally squat cleans are specified as such. kudos to those who did a full squat clean, that would have easily added another 8 minutes at least onto my time. 2nd round, I had to drop the deadlift to 225# for the last 18.
Thanks to Chief Brown's family for their sacrifice, there are no adequate words to write... This was a very hard workout, as it should be in memoriam for a SEAL.
My form on cleans is poor, so I scaled that down to 115 for both rounds... I think I was getting a more consistent & correct form by the end though, and will go heavier next time we do cleans.
The 295 lb deadlifts were very difficult on the first round, so I went down to 205 lbs on the second round. Probably should have only dropped it to 250 but I wimped out.
Even with the reduced weight on the lifts, this took me 35 minutes.

I think that is a PR for longest WOD for me. A couple weeks ago for my 48th B-day I did The Filthy Fifty (as is my tradition) in 36:37. And I've done Linda in sub 40 min. But this one was downright punishing for an old guy like me.
