"When we are debating an issue, loyalty means giving me your honest opinion, whether you think I'll like it or not. Disagreement, at this stage, stimulates me. But once a decision has been made, the debate ends. From that point on, loyalty means executing the decision as if it were your own."

Great workout today. I like the dual purpose workout, a little strength, followed by a metcon. I can say at least for myself that we program with strength skill followed by a metcon. I am assuming many other affiliates follow the same methods.

Comment #4 - Posted by: Eric/CrossFit North County at August 3, 2010 5:10 PM

looking forward to the workout...

ref Powell comment, suppose that was him recalling what G.W. told him regarding Iraq? hehehe

Seriously though, that approach works within a structured context. Outside that, in the real world, it comes across as terribly egotistical.

Great quote from Colin Powell. Courgeous Followership is not given the same weight as Courageous Leadership in the real world. Executing an ethically morally sound decision through loyalty to another individual in any relationship is courageous. It is not egotistical in any way but truly humble and selfless.

Loyalty is reciprocal, it is not a means of gaining advantage, and not a means of defending oneself. One should never exploit the loyalty of followers and neither should any following rely upon unquestioning loyalty as a defence. Thoughts?

Finally.
Is Crossfit finally going metric system for all measurements? Looking forward to this WOD!

Comment #14 - Posted by: BrianG at August 3, 2010 6:06 PM

Awesome WOD Dave! I hate doing 10 in one minute let alone 30!

4 - I know a lot of affiliates program that way, but I program mine so that a strength is only a strength day so we can really take time and go all out. Then for the metcon we'll only do that on a metcon day. I want athletes giving 100% for each, not 90% for both.

5 - C.P. is a military leader and that is absolutely the way the military works when executed properly (though rarely do you find it done properly). That is what that quote refers to. And the military is the real world. I'd imagine its also a good strategy for bosses to have with their employees in the working world.

I believe in a USAW comp you get three attempts in "weight on the bar" order. If you lift light weights you could in effect go three times before the next person. Also, the time between events is also effected by the number of participants...in short there is no set time between the snatch and C&J that I am aware of.

Dave Lipson is.... uh.... Super human. That is incredible and a great example of why I love crossfit. Some one who is not fimilar with isabel or crossfit will see this video and proly say "so what, I can curl that much". DO WORK!!!

Comment #27 - Posted by: BlackCatX-Fit at August 3, 2010 6:50 PM

It doesn't specify squat or power so I'm guessing it's fielder's choice.

Also, should we count the number of REPS completed, or rounds? Kinda confused on that.

I have never posted here, but felt compelled to this evening.

I am not necessarily even a big fan of Colin Powell, but I feel the need to defend him from being compared to the Nazis. DB in the 'Cuse, can you cite any order that General/Secretary Powell ever gave that would come anywhere close to telling his people to commit genocide?

Also, Joe Hardy is absolutely correct that that is exactly how it is supposed to work in the military and that the military is most certainly "the real world."

Semper Fi,

Man WTF?!...that was awesome! Well done Dave, I couldn't do that even if I cheated my way through the reps the whole time...I am proud of my 8:17 Isabel (any WOD sub-ten for me is crazy!..), but it is still pale in comparison...

This WOD looks interesting..I love it because it has three things which I am getting better at but still need practice to perform flawlessly: Snatch, Squat cleans and DU's. I will be enjoying/hating the hell out of this WOD...CHIMO!

2) sub 1 minute wod...is this even a work out? i've heard the whole amount of work done argument, but for someone of this caliber, is this their wod for the day? To be clear, i'm not dissing on Dave, that video was just ridiculous and congrats to him on that time. I'm just trying to figure out if you are at that level of fitness/strength, is that enough for the day or was that basically just a warm up? I wish I knew from experience!

Comment #39 - Posted by: christian at August 3, 2010 8:17 PM

Reference the comments in regards to the C. P. quote.

DB in the 'cuse - There is a flaw in your thinking, and with all due respect (I mean that, it's not a sarcastic comment) I believe you've taken the quote out of context.

If you are not in the military, I can see how you may draw this simplified, albeit inaccurate, comparison b/w what C.P. said, and Nazi war criminals.

Herein lies the difference - I, as an officer in the U.S. Military am actually obligated to disobey an order from superior officers, if using sound judgement, I determine an order to be immoral, unethical, and/or illegal under the Uniform Code of Military Justice, U.S. Law, or the Geneva Convention, even if I risk reprimand.

95% of the time, the process should work (realize it does not always in application) as C.P. stated in a military setting. For example, if I'm told to "take that hill," and the hill is occupied by the enemy, there really is no room for argument. On the other hand, if I am told to "shoot a civilian in hopes of getting intel..." or something along those lines, it would then be my duty as a commissioned officer to refuse to follow that order, and order my subordinates not to comply with higher HQ's intent.

Have a great evening.

So on this rest day I had to instruct 3 martial arts classes. We do some kind of pushups in nearly every class. After the first few pushups I was feeling way stronger than usual and just started throwing down clapping behind the back pushups. I've never even tried these before because I would have landed on my face and I've only seen a picture of this super ripped Korean Master doing them.

I just started CrossFit two and a half weeks ago and I know that all the new modalities of training made it possible for me to do this new motion. Thank you CrossFit for busting down someone who worked out all the time, has run a couple marathons, won a few fights, and still had a lot of room for improvement. Your training just makes sense.

Comment #42 - Posted by: tkdra at August 3, 2010 8:55 PM

Isabel in 56 seconds equates to approximately 0.8 horsepower (135 lbf x ~6 feet of ROM x 30 reps / 56 secs = 0.8 hp)...Therefore, D.L. is 80% of a horse for 30 seconds.

Comment #43 - Posted by: Clinton Canaday - 23/6'3"/225 at August 3, 2010 8:59 PM

Oops, 80% of a horse for 56 seconds...even better.

Comment #44 - Posted by: Clinton Canaday - 23/6'3"/225 at August 3, 2010 9:00 PM

I guess the Isabel video means we can ignore everyone who says "If it isn't specified, it means a full squat snatch".

Still, 56 seconds, Crazy.

Comment #45 - Posted by: Crow at August 3, 2010 9:02 PM

I counted zero reps in the video for Lipson if this was Isabel as RX'd because the CF FAQ exercise description for a snatch is: "... start from the floor, catch in a full squat." All reps in the video can best be described as a power snatch: "start from the floor, catch in a quarter or half squat position aka the power position."

I don't want to have this comment interpreted as a lack of respect or appreciation for the raw power and effort required to execute 30 power snatches @ 135# in 56 seconds, but you're only cheating yourself if you don't count the reps properly. I train alone and have never set foot in a CF box. However, when I did Isabel in my basement I had to scale the weight because I wanted to go to full squat position and execute the lift with proper form. I'd be more impressed and could learn more from a video of someone executing the WoD as RX'd with a slower time.

Comment #46 - Posted by: tony at August 3, 2010 9:28 PM

Though the crossfit FAQ does say to do a full squat, the true definition of a snatch is to move the weight from ground to locked arms overhead.

The reason why some of us do a full squat is because we do not have enough power to throw the bar high enough and catch it in a high snatch.

Comment #48 - Posted by: rashmi at August 3, 2010 9:43 PM

Jonathan: you bring up a good point and I believe you support my earlier point. It is true that it takes more raw power to throw a weight up from ground to overhead, but I believe a properly executed snatch is a demonstration of quickness and athleticism because it relies on power and skill due to the additional balance and coordination required to properly catch the weight overhead and stand up with it. I would like to see a properly executed snatch that demonstrates athleticism and power...what Mr. Lipson did is impressive and I wish I could do it, but it's not the WoD as RX'd in my opinion. If I'm not interpreting the WoD accurately then maybe the FAQ and Bergener videos about learning the snatch should be revised.

Hooray for Carole! Pole-vaulting at 52 is so outrageously cool. Kevin and Carole Clark have been extremely consistent mainpage posters for a long time, (often including their son Doug), achieving PR's almost like clockwork. It is such an inspiration and joy to see older athletes excelling at a program that is usually intense almost to the point of brutality. I often feel unspeakably grateful to Greg and Lauren for showing me how much farther I can push my body, and this picture is a true celebration of the success of their genius, and the hard work and dedication of the Clark family. Congratulations and thank you Carole--you look so beautiful! As I've said so many times, Kevin you are one lucky dog.

Today I did
100ft walking lunges
21 pullups
21 sit-ups
100ft walking lunges
18 pullups
18 sit-ups
All the way down to 6 reps

As rx'd in 10:56

Felt good. Only broke on set of 18 pullups did 12/6 and only stopped enough to chalk up. All other sets of all movements were unbroken. I didn't waste anytime between movements I had a steady pace just not a fast pace I guess. Next time I'll try to speed the movement of each rep up.

Pretty happy about my pullup performance. Big improvement from when I first started xfit.

Next time faster.

Hey, mas - "further." You're thankful for how much "further" you can push your body. ;-)
Great sitting with you at the Games, brother. I'll get you those links and info about muscle size, strength, and little guys v. big guys debate.

On the squat snatch-power snatch debate for Isabel. A "true" Isabel is full squat and it makes it impossible to do in 56 seconds, the same is true for "Grace" - HOWEVER - it's always been (ultimately) about getting the weight overhead from the ground. The "full" squat versions of both movements are unequaled for learning explosive hip opening and reversal. Coach is on video talking about this many times over.

Dave's sub-minute Isabel is simply mind-boggling for anyone who's done it a few times, in either version. It's an impressive display of strength and of cardio-respiratory endurance - yes, I said cardio. Don't believe me? Try it and see how your lungs feel after about 15 snatches in a row at 135.

Just. F'ing. Wow.

1.i like the look of this workout. benefits of a max load and a metcon. though my numbers will probably be weak sauce cause my snatches arent great.
2. dave lipson, that was badass!
3. miranda, you are smokin'.
4. i find a post workout shake definitely helps with recovery. it takes advantage of that post workout window where your body is primed for nutrient uptake and your metabolism is rolling. i usually have milk (cow or goat), whey, and sometimes a raw egg in a shake and some type of fruit (banana, mango, cantelope etc.).

Powell is referring to lawful orders here. We in the military are actually obligated to refuse unlawful orders. The Nazi excuse of "We were ordered to" doesn't hold water, not for a second. In the US military, we are all held to the UCMJ, and Geneva convention. We have Rules of Engagement that clearly define lawful targets.

In the military context when mission success is on the line and more to the point, when lives are on the line, LAWFUL orders must be followed.

When an order is passed down from superior to subordinate, the superior should not pass that order and say "I don't like it but we gotta do it because the Colonel said so." In doing so, the person handing the order down is undermining the authority of the Colonel and likely damaging morale in the process.
It is the supervisors responsibility to see the intent of the commander and the purpose of the order and effectively communicate the intent to his people.

Tony #46 & 49,

Coach Mike Burgner, I believe, has always said that a Squat Snatch is just a missed Power Snatch. I think that coming from a man of that caliber, a Power Snatch used in Isabel is acceptable. The longer you do CF the more you will realize that its about getting that weight overhead as quickly and efficiently as possible. If you want more clarification on Snatching, check out the June 2, 2010 article of the Journal on Snatch Strategies for CF workouts.

Great job Dave, you have my support!

Forcing people to do the squat versions of Olympic lifts is ridiculous. You catch it at the necessary depth for completion of the rep. This may mean a muscle snatch for 135lbs, a power snatch for 225lbs, and a squat for 250+, or increasing depth as you fatigue, but arbitrarily telling people to catch in the squat position when they're strong enough to not need to is useless, why perform unnecessary work?

Carole = AMAZING pic, and great accomplishments. You could NEVER get my butt on top of a little thin pole moving at speed!

Dave = Holy freaking cow, dude. That was utterly impressive. Despite the discussion regarding squat vs. power snatches, that was a truly amazing display of intensity over time. Awesome.

I could not remember if the triplet called for squat clean and jerk or just squat clean...so I did squat clean and jerk. I probably could have gotten more reps if I had done only squat cleans.

Clean and Jerk: 140kg (308#) (split clean)

WOD
11 rds and 6 cleans

Didn't bother doing the math on it just did the WOD. I have to split snatch due to multiple operations on my shoulders, and the split snatch makes life safer and easier. And I split clean cause my max squat clean is 152.2kg, but my best jerk is only 143.1kg, so the split clean is just easier.

Clean and Jerk - 74.85kg (165 Pounds) TIed PR Attempted with 175 pounds but I failed to lock it at the top, almost got it, :) very happy about it.

As many rounds and reps as possible in ten minutes of:
54.5 kg Squat clean, 6 reps (didn't have any weights on kilos so put in 120 pounds)
12 Pull-ups
24 Double-unders

Completed 5 rounds and started my round 6 with 2 squat cleans completed.

Total 341.85, hopefully didn't mess the math.

Nice WOD, Not a bad score for being 140 pounds and the average Joe. :) WOD was done here in Colorado Springs at McKibbens gym in Fort Carson.

#100 - Adam:
This WOD apparently is a prep or ad for the upcoming USAW/Crossfit Open event in October. Oly events use kilos by rules/convention, so it makes perfect sense to post the wod in kilos.
As to the prior naysayer about proper oly form vs press outs, I assume that standards will be posted before the event. Anyone serious will make sure that their lifts will be legit.

Perhaps Crossfit will have a rejuvenating effect on future US Oly lifting?????

As Rx: 75kg (165#) power snatch + 102kg (225#) squat clean & jerk + 216 reps (5 rnds + 6 squat cleans) = 387 points.

C/D: PNF of hamstrings.

Just an off day. Nothing felt quite right, not even the MetCon. Shoulders were too tight to do a full squat on the snatch. The 225# clean and jerk had the ugliest jerk you'd ever want to see. And I carried that frustrated feeling throughout the MetCon. I may not have access to any equipment for the next two days. So maybe that will force me to go light and get some rest.

OPT, one of the most elite guys on here is posting 6+ rounds, I find it hard to believe someone can double that. I guess anything's possible but 11 rounds doesn't even seem humanly possible to me.

Back to regular WODs now.

Thanks to everyone who recognized Carole's new vaulting interest. Thanks to Coach and Lauren for providing this program so that we can continue to improve, even in our 50's. Coach says to try new sports, and this program certainly makes it possible to even try very physical ones.

Loved today's WOD. Exploited everything that I am finally getting better at but still need practice: Snatch, C&J and DU's. Did the WOD with a slight change:

Snatch 1 Rep (47.7kg/105lbs).
Clean & Jerk 1 Rep (68.2kg/150lbs).
5 Rds for time of:
6 Squat Clean (47.7kg/105lbs).
12 PU.
24 DU.
Time: 28:11.

My Snatch technique is getting slightly better, but when I get to heavier weights, I am having trouble committing to throw the weight back past my head. I think I don't have enough wrist snap. My C&J is definitely a lot better, especially since I've been doing the split jerk. More practice in order. CHIMO!

#45 Crow,

No, it DOESN'T mean that you can ignore everyone who says that. It means you need to do more research on your own before being a smart-ass and going after people that try to help you out and do the work for you. For your edification, "Grace" and "Isabel" are (and have ALWAYS been) considered "any how" workouts. The standard rule of "if it doesn't specify then the squat variety is Rx'd" does not apply to them. However, it DOES apply to all of the other WODs.

344 I really like the finding heavy load first then amrap good times.

As far as post workout goes. I like to just do whole foods example chicken sweet potatoe with almonds and fruit, eggs sweet potatoe with fruit ect. I have done every pre during and post workout combo you can think of and never felt any real difference between the two. I will say though the one product I liked was waxy maze. It really plowed through the gut and got what i had mixed with it into the blood stream at a hight rate (ex. scoop and a half of waxy maze with 5grams cee creatine 10 grams glutamine and 5 grams l luceine. followed by a protein shake or meal 20-30 min later..)

Instead of snatch and jerk, PRd front squat 3 rep max @ 135!

I got to 4 rounds and then called a medical quit before I ripped a callous, or else swimming at Cape Cod the rest of the week would have sucked!

Did a few to many reps on the snatch and clean and jerk I think, so I was a bit more tired than I wanted to be for the WOD. Still havent done much really heavy in either of those lefts so didn't push too hard. Was able to clean the weight easy but had trouble transitioning to a good jerk hand placement.
This is also the first WOD I've double unders as Rx'd!!! And with my brand new speed rope!

Pleased with the PRs. Snatch is coming along. 180 was high enough but I couldn't quite get stable under it. Very happy with C&J. 225 felt easy. Was my first time successfully cleaning 240, felt solid. Last two jerks were ugly, didn't get deep enough, and had to press them out. Despite the poor form, I'm happy to have fought through and finished them. Best previous jerk was 235 from behind the head - good thing I didn't think about that when I was putting up 240.

AMRAP was tough. Felt more like the last 10 minutes of a 20 minute AMRAP - I was tired after the first round! Happy to get 6 rounds, that was my goal.

I spent way too much time on this. My legs were already about done by the time I got to the C&J's. I tied my C&J record, but I was tired and my form was getting wild (with no bumper plates for safety), so I stopped. Taking only 15lbs off the bar to do cleans for reps after that wasn't fun...

CFWU-3. Pushups instead of PU 2nd. Superman. Burgener. Row 500m.
Snatch - 155 went up pretty easy, but failed at 160.
C&J - 200. Jerk surprisingly easy. Slight split
160+200=360/2.2 = 163.64 + 164 reps in triplet=327.64
DU true. Strung together 12 at times. Sq cleans pretty tough. Keep core tighter & knees out in hole.

Snatch 95 lbs (form not right due to lack of consistency for the summer and last two weeks off)
C&J 155lbs (probably could have done more, but just trying to ease back in.

Then did 2 rounds plus SC and PU's (broke the jump rope at start of first round - lost time trying to find a replacement and adjusting the timing for the new rope) Then did another 24 DU's for good measure.

Score
42kg Snatch
70kg C&J
18 SQ
36 PU
48 DU
