For the CFT, strict press - 'should press' implies strict, whereas push press means including dip/drive, and obviously, jerk is dip/drive/dip.

always cool to see a big dl but it's obvious after watching the games that you only have to be strong enough (450ish)- not strongman strong. i know i'll get heat here cause you can't say anything even remotely critical in the comments but orlando got 245 overhead and speal got 225? after all the non stop strongman vids the well rounded crossfitters place at the top in the end.

The games were pure metcon. Lots of bodyweight and lightish (for an elite athlete) weights. It wasn't designed for a strongman to win.

One thing we know, don't look to this year's games to provide much insight into next year's. Hang-on, this is gonna get good!

Comment #37 - Posted by: Dave at July 24, 2010 12:58 AM

It's unfortunate that the main site WODs have made crossfit so inaccessible to the common fitness enthusiast looking for variety. It's great to see how one stacks up to the general crossfit public, but when the workout requires something such as ring handstand pushups, I feel that that the average joe (or jane) may be unnecessarily disillusioned by the elitism of the workout. Scaling the workout by adjusting exercises or reps leaves much to be desired when it comes to results.

Comment #38 - Posted by: christopher Kimber at July 24, 2010 1:21 AM

#38... don't underestimate people!! I couldn't do a single hand stand push up when I started CF 8 months ago.. I'm up to 5 full range HSPU now! Disillusioned??? Heck no!!! On the contrary, I'll keep busting my butt till I get up on those rings!!

You have the wrong mentality for CF..

Comment #39 - Posted by: Robbyhernz at July 24, 2010 1:59 AM

Chris k. - I never understand when people agonize over the difficulty of the site and who it might scare off. I stumbled on cf four years ago completely unprepared for it. I subbed and scaled and took recovery days until this day. I've done main site, catalyst athletics, military athlete, sealfit, al asAd, and other sites over the years. The variety has kept me going, and checking out the cf progeny has broadened and strengthened me. It's been said many times; if cf isn't for you then don't worry about it. One thing cf develops is humility, being willing to sub or scale and not take personally is part of that.

Attention Joint Base Balad CrossFitters! I am relatively new to JBB and have checked out some of the sessions at the H6 gym. Although my work schedule prohibits me from seeing every session, I have yet to see one run by an actual L1 certified trainer. While this is fine for the firebreathing CF pros, I see a lot of novices receiving very little coaching. Next week, I will start offering L1 coached sessions on Saturday, Sunday, and Wednesday at 1800. If you are currently at JBB and L1 certified, please contact me by e-mail so I can join your efforts and bring the true spirit of CF back to JBB! Remember ... mechanics, consistency, intensity.

I would like to see a Body Weight to Strength comparison created and or listed for the Crossfit Total. An example would be, if I am 5'7" 160lbs, and I lift a Total of 890lbs, where does my strength lie? I know that those #'s are pretty good, but how good? Just a thought.

It is a great place to start. Also be sure to check out the Brand X scaled versions of the WODs. If you have any questions, I'm sure that anyone on this forum would be more than willing to lend and opinion. Please don't write-off Crossfit just yet.

What is this? All I have for equipment is one rusted 8lb dumbell and a body by Jake ab ball without enough air in it.

Why can't hq program a free wod for just me everyday utilizing just the equipment I own? For free.

Way to go JBB Crossfitters! Glad to see you guys are still going strong. I was there from Aug 09 - Feb 10 and finding a great group to knock at the mainsite WOD each day gave me something to look forward to each day. I hope that all the new bumper plates that H6 had ordered finally made it. We had a total of 230 lbs of bumpers when I was there. The 25 lb plates really took a beating.
Glad to see some familiar faces in the pics: Emily and Melissa- your "dang girl" muscles are coming along quite well. HSPUs in Hero's Highway - too cool.

To #48 Ed- please do what you can to help keep Jbb Crossfit alive, intense and thriving. The AF is so gun-shy about real fitness that works that those of us that know about Crossfit but have not had the chance at attending a cert due to lack of time/availability always face the specter of the powers that be shutting us down. When there happens to be a L1 cert person deployed there, awesome....spread the Koolaid! If there isn't, then someone needs to be responsible to study the videos, hold people accountable to form over intensity and keep the program safe. Don't give the higher ups any more fuel to use against something that works!
Stay safe and come home soon JBB Crossfitters!

If you are backsquatting 345 and only able to deadlift 255 then there is probably something amiss.

Either your form on deadlift isn't efficient, or you're not doing full range of motion on backsquat would be my guesses without any other evidence besides those numbers.

Some people don't DL much more than their BS...but that's a drastic difference. If you were a new lifter it would be expected I think to have a closer gap between BS and DL...but your BS number is very good and thus would expect you to have a better DL.

I don't know...maybe you have never deadlifted before?

Go to FAQ section. Under heading 4.9 there are CrossFit total standards.

If your weight is between two categories, go to the internet and find an interpolation calculator. You will be able to figure out where your strength stacks up for your approximate weight.

We had a Group Crossfit WOD at Crossfit Paradise this morning. We did "Quarter Gone Bad", slightly modified (Kb swings took the place of burpees):

"Quarter Gone Bad"

Five rounds for total reps of:
135 pound Thruster, 15 seconds
Rest 45 Seconds
1.5 pood Kettlebell swing, 15 seconds
Rest 45 seconds
50 pound Weighted pull-up, 15 seconds
Rest 45 Seconds

Totals for me were:

DNF

Squat: 295
Press: 115
DL: 315

Weight felt very heavy today. Managed to get close to my back squat pr (305) and felt good about that effort.

Shoulder press is going south! My shoulders seem to be "jamming" in the first few inches of the lift. Not sure what's happening. I spent quite a bit of time analyzing it and trying different technique. In the end, I was left feeling frusturated and spent. Didn't have anything left in the tank for my DLs, so I quit before I got hurt.

I need to fix my shoulder press. I attended the Barbell Cert last year where I moved my grip closer. But ever since, I seem to "jam up" in the shoulder and can't get past the sticking point. My press has dropped and I can't get it up.

Anyone have any ideas?

No rack in the garage and a shoulder that I need to rest made me work on cleans.

I got up to 165# which is well below my max of 180#. I feel like I haven't done many heavy cleans lately so I just have to take what I do. We just got some bumper plates so I think I was just too comfortable with dumping the lot instead of doing all I could do to keep in on my shoulder like I used to have to do.

Then I did 7 x 135 full cleans in 40 sec. I think the workout is called the super seven (from a Games qualifier where the contestants had 7 minutes to figure out the most weight they could clean 7 times in 40 seconds). I just did the one set and didn't try 140 or 145. Maybe I should have.

Convenient shot of Progenex bag in the camera, but still an awesome lift. Oh, by the way whats up with Prgenex is it good stuff or what, right now the only supplements I take is fish oils, daily vatimins and Muscle milk or whey isolate after WODS to help with recovery.

Former PR was 255+135+335=725. Just wasn't feeling the squats today. I attribute it to missing some days and letting my diet slip a bit lately. Really pleased with the DL PR though. I think I could go even heavier, but I want to get comfortable and consistent at this weight to build confidence and avoid injury.

Felt good today. Was cautious with squat, to ensure that hip does not reinjure. Bailed on 345, didn't feel right. A little surprised by shoulder press - 160 went up easy, 165 went nowhere. Happy with deadlift - 410 was really tough. I felt I should try 415, but just had nothing left; it barely moved at all.

I still can't do all the WODS as rx'd, and there are still certain movements and exercises that may always give me trouble (OHS, DU's, etc.), but I'm working for improvement on my weaknesses, and I always bust my butt on any WOD that I can do. I feel powerful, fast, and healthy. THANKS CROSSFIT!

Currently at:

SP - 145 - haven't done in a while
DL - 350 - haven't done in a while

Old total: 790. Once I get back to a gym will hopefully break 810 or 820 with new DL and SP 1RMs.

Missing daily exercise... on vacation right now and all I can think about is CF WODs! Take care everybody, have a great day.

Squat - 335 (F-355, not pretty)
Shoulder Press - 165 (F-175)
Deadlift - 405

Total - 905

Observations:
1. My squat and sh. press are not improving as fast as my DL, not sure why, but its very frustrating
2. My squat form is much better, I'm actually going down past parallel with the heavy weights, but I have no strength at the bottom.
3. 405 is a big milestone for me in the DL, I'm going to shoot for 450 on DL and 1,000 total by the end of the year.
4. On shoulder press I can do 135 x 10 reps, 155 x 5 reps, but barely one rep with 165, and I wasn't even close on 175. This does not compute.

Jessie, your thought?

Last time my total PR'd by 95lb. 35 is disappointing, I hope I'm not slowing down. I felt like I could have done more on the deads cause my legs were still solid, but after squat and press my core was smoked and I just couldn't lift anymore.

Squat - 335
Shoulder Press - 155
Deadlift - 405

Total - 895

Matt, my thoughts:
1. I think our squat/press are improving slower b/c we had a better idea at the beginning what our max should be, whereas with deadlift we're just now maxing to our full capacity. This was the first deadlift PR I've hit where I knew I couldn't have lifted any heavier.
2. That's awesome on your form...I actually got 345, but with no spotter, if I'm honest with myself I probably didn't go down all the way, so I have to stay with 335 until I can do it right.
3. Yeah, I think 455 by the end of the year is very doable; I think 1000 total will be more likely if we start doing CFSB, which I'm seriously considering starting when I get home.
4. I think our lack of progress on shoulder press could also be from not getting enough practice b/c we can't do HSPU. But at least you got 165. And I stalled out after 1 foot of motion, instead of 6", so that's progress too I guess.
