Ryan Moody apparently doesn't have to obey the same laws of physics which the rest of us mortals are slave to. This is the only rational explanation for for the CFJ video...
We are all so proud of Val aka The Ginger Hulk!!! What a return after last year. What you don't know is that she was also voted the teacher of the year in her district!
Let Again Faster do the commercials.
That journal commercial syncs up with Poker Face way too well.
Thanks for posting the final heats of the muscle up/Snatch WOD! Much appreciated...
I can't help feeling a bit disappointed that Rich Frowning lost those games on an arguably sport specific skill rather than through pure fitness. His lead was commanding. He didn't have a legged rope climb in his arsenal so he climbed it arms only. Placed 2nd. I'm not saying that he should have first. As a games participant climbing a rope should have been in his arsenal. Especially because learning the skill is not a highly technical challenge and can be accomplished in a few hours. However, it leaves me with the same feeling as when Annie from Iceland fell out of contention against Tanya Wagner because she didn't have MUs last year. I'm not saying Tanya or Graham would not have won even if their competitors had those technical skills. They are both tremendous competitors and are well deserving of their titles. However, as a person standing on the outside, watching humans push themselves to the absolute limit while doing things so far out of my skill set that they almost seem magical it leaves me with a strange feeling to see one of them lose the competition for world's fittest because they coudln't climb a rope.
no offense or direspect intended for the box jump guy because there is no doubt that he can jump. that being said 56" is not a world record.
Do we ever lift things from the floor like the woman is doing in real day to day life? It looks quite unnattural.
M
It's past time there was an official "trophy case" for world record times on the benchmark Crossfit workouts.
Marco, have you ever bailed hay? Thats where the movement comes into play.
That amuzing that a 56 box jump is a world record we have 10 athletes out of our 100 or so members who have 50 inch box jumps and all except two would be considered novices with a year or less of training under their belt. I know at least a couple traceur who have hit 56. I am pretty sure there are a few hundred elite, footballers, basketballers, and sprinters who could crush this for a laugh.
A much needed rest day after 3 days of games inspired hard work!
Kai,
Your argument would make sense if the objective of Games were to minimize your dissapointment.
The snatch is such a beautiful movement
LOL Good response Hari. Guess you are right.
Kai, your logic is pretty flawed. What about for guys who were way out of the competition early because they couldn't run very well. If the rope climb was earlier then Rich could very well have been 5,6,7 points or more out of first so it's kinda silly to say that it really came down to it being the last workout and that cost him first. Plus, you can watch someone climb a rope and be able to do it moments later and he obviously has the strength. I just think he was completely gassed.
Ryan Moody,
Nice Jump! I was wondering if you have try before to come to the tires running.. stop, and then jump with Feet leaving the ground together, I ask because I got a 54 inch jump and I did it like that, I am sure that you have a couple of more inches in you. by the way you make the 50 Inch box jumps look way easy. :)
I am wondering how high Le-Bron James can jump or Spud Webb back in his days. google Spud Webb and you will see who I am talking about. the guy is 5 feet 6 inches and won the dunk contest against Dominin Wilkins in 1986.
Nice videos today. have a nice rest day everybody.
SANTI
Kai,
I agree it was a shame for Rich to lose on the last skill of the final event, but...June 22 WOD had 25 rope ascents, May 17 WOD had 27 rope ascents, March 9 WOD had 5 rope acents...
There is a skill component to every activity no matter how simple (have you seen the many videos on standing up [aka squatting]?). The games simply cannot be absolutely skill-neutral. They can be fair, asking athletes to execute skills they should all know (posted on mainsite) and other skills that may not have been posted on mainsite but that are reasonably unlikely to be in any individual athlete's "wheelhouse" (is this Crossfitese? or is this term in general usage?).
I think next year everyone who makes it to the games will have practiced every skill that has appeared on the mainsite in the previous year (i.e., HSRingPU) so as not to sell themselves short at the end. I have no doubt Rich could have completed the final WOD if he'd had the skill.
Anyway, I hope it doesn't bother him, his performance was tremendous.
Why is everyone bashing a 56 inch STANDING box jump... If it's so minuscule, then YOU beat it. Quit your yapping and perform... Crossfit is performance based right... so shut up and do it.
Val is fantastic! We are so lucky to workout next to her at Dogtown Crossfit. She packs a lot of good in that 5'?" body. Ginger Hulk SMASH!
For time:
75 Power Snatches @ 75 lbs.
My time was 6:50. I'm just wondering how that time would stack up against people at the sectional and regional level. Thanks in advance for anyone who has some feedback for me :)
Val is an incredible athlete! Her HSPU/Clean wod time was 4:09, impressive! Super fun to watch all competitors this year, thanks HQ for streaming live, it was a fantastic weekend!
#24 anthony
i competed in the north central sectionals and my time for "randy" 75 power snatches 75# is 5:37, so your time is very good. some of the more serious competitors can surely go faster than me.
by comparison matt chan who finished 4th in the games this year did 94 reps (7000# total) at 75# in the 2009 regionals in 4:15!!
56 inch standing box jump is not a WR, what the hell is World Record Academy? This just looks foolish on CF. It's an awesome jump, but not WR.
is stepping into the box jump allowable? because thats all i'm seeing in these videos. it doesnt seem like that would be considered a "standing" box jump.
No, you have to be standing still, running up is different and adds a few inches, stepping in a bit does too in my opinion. Should be at least 5 seconds standing still.
Stevenson,
That's a great box jump! Not standing, but still impressive! I wonder what Moody would hit with forward motion.. I'd say close to 60"!
Crossfit Games clips are so inspirational. Thanks for posting those. Great job.
YES YES YES thank you for posting this clip- Friday's WOD was the only one I missed watching live!
because crossfit is growing, would
they ever make us pay for the website.
anybody's opinon.
Ive been off my crossfit schedule and i since today is a rest day, i came up with my own WOD for today.

i will be doing this around noon, post my time then
Are there any training videos for doing the bar pulls from the knees?
As soon as I saw that I had the same "Aha!" moment I had when I first ran into crossfit.
Please send me an email if you can jfdoherty4@gmail.com if possible
Thanks in advance.
Jim
Just an example on the rope climb: I bought a rope on monday and hung it 15 feet off the ground from my backyard tree. Nobody in my family had ever climbed a rope nor had any training, other than watching the videos on the main site. My 11 year old daughter climbed it to the top on her first try and continued to climb it 6 more times that day. I also climbed it on the first try + 5 more times. My husband and son had a hard time coordinating their feet to the movement. Neither one made it to the top. I think it is just one of those things that are easier for some than others--perhaps lower body weight makes it easier??? I don't know. I do know why the athletes were torn up from that event as my daughter and I have numerous bad rope burns on our legs and feet. And it is scary to get to the top when you are feeling fatigued because the descent is trickier than the ascent--and we weren't 20 feet up.
In the end, I liked the rope event in the games and didn't think it was any more unfair than the other skills that were required for events. If anything the wheel barrow event was the one that threw a monkey wrench in the system. An athlete that didn't know how to use one was at a disadvantage as we could tell by several men and women floundering with them.
That's just my two cents...
Bar pulls from the knees are just a trick devised by Westside Barbell. They offer far less benefit than a real snatch (a full bod movement) and only increase the chance of injury. Why HQ helps promote these silly tricks is beyond me.
Not taking credit from the box jump video, always good to see another guy with some ups. But I cannot believe that 56" is a world record. I have a 60" box jump with one step, (I know not a true box jump) step was more for forward momentum rather than vertical jump height. Im short, I need a little help haha.
I thought some college football player had done a 58" box jump.
Marco-
The Snatch is a movement that develops and requires explosive hip opening and closing skills/strengths as well as balance, timing and efficiency of movement....at the very least.
The Snatch is a recipe for increased athleticism.

Did yesterday's clean/hspu WOD today. Results posted there.
Also, got a new box jump PR in today's warm-up with a 44" jump. Followed that with a massive crash trying for 46"!
Happy rest day to those taking it.
Loved the editing on the box jump vid. Great work.
I have a 52" standing box jump.. and I'd consider myself and 'average' athlete at best..
I find it hard to believe that 56" is a world record.
56" is awesome- don't get me wrong.. but no WR IMO..
World record?
The only way this is a world record is if no one with great athletic talent has tried to beat it. Many players in the NBA have VERTICAL jumps that exceed 40 inches, from a standstill. That does not even include the raising of the knees. This was done with a step first, in which case a handful of people could easily have box jumps approaching 70 inches or above. We saw Nate Robinson jump over Dwight Howard in the dunk contest. By my math Howard is over 80 inches tall. Now of course he did not clear his head with his feet and he had a little bit of a running start, that being said he would easily destroy a 56 inch jump with one step.
@ Noah (#21)
Re-read the comments, no one is bashing a 56 in. box jump, just the bogus claim that it is a world record.
It's a good jump and a cool video, but calling it a world record when a quick internet search can prove it isn't just makes the whole thing seem pathetic.

I could be wrong, but I think the "world record" isn't the 56 inches, but that he box jumped 81% of his height of 5'9".
Can anyone confirm?
Regardless, pretty badass.
Why is there so much hostility? Can't we just be happy for a dude who nailed a 56" jump?
Great jump Moody! Keep up the good work you will break 60" soon.
Wow. Dude hits a 56" box jump, submits it to authorities for a world record, has now received word from at least one authority that it is a world record, and he encourages others to beat his record. His thanks? He is attacked. I don't get it.
I agree that there are both: (a) people who can jump higher; and, (b) people who actually have jumped higher. But until they do so under world record conditions and have those attempts verified by the appropriate authorities, those other jumps are not world records.
It is just like doing a world record weight snatch or clean and jerk in practice. While the lift might exceed the world record, it does not constitute a world record.
I'm hopeful that his jump encourages a lot of other people to submit their jumps under appropriate conditions so that we can learn just how high others can go. 66"? Higher than that? This could be really cool to monitor!
No Rob Orlando we can't be happy with a guy who nailed a 56'' box jump because 50% of crossfitters are a**holes.
Day 4 with the broken foot got back in the gym to do some upperbody! Once you go crossfit any other type of training is just boring! 4-5 weeks left with this boot!
#41, you say snatch is a recipe for increased athleticism. But #12 says it is for bailing hay. Who knew farmers were so athletic.
Did yesterdays workout. Time is there

Ummm... you may have guessed a bit low on that percentage.

It seems every so often a video is posted here that gets the idiots off the couch and on to the comments section. Remember the flack Nadia took over her 100 pullups? How about a year ago when Rhabdo killed the Fran time. And the list goes on.
These are the same folks that boo little league players when they strike out. Un-effin-believable.
You know, I'm a little hacked off - I can't for the life of me figure out WHAT THE PEOPLE IN THE COMPETITION WERE ACTUALLY DOING! It was MUs and snatches, yeah. But how many and how heavy? The commentators don't say, the games website doesn't say. I love the CF games but this is just plain weird and very spectator-unfriendly.
Or am I missing something?
Here's a follow up to my first post:
Sorry for the agro above! CF Games is a growing process and that's cool. In case anyone else can't find the info I wanted, here's a link with the lowdown on all the events:
http://games2010.crossfit.com/blog/2010/07/individual-events-announced,669/
One other critique, though: there's something odd about the color of the font on the Games website. It's quite difficult to read on my monitor. Perhaps that could be adjusted a little bit.
Is anyone else having a problem with the Friday workout?
As cool as this workout was to watch on the games I hope it is not a sign of things to come as this equipment is hard to come by even for an afiliate let alone someone at home in their garage gym. What I like most about crossfit is the ease of accessibility to athletes in terms of its simplicity.
To VCF People....
I know you were very proud of your athletes but try to control yourself next time when crossfit is trying to pay tribute to our lost athlete. Try to show some class and keep it down.
I agree with Kai's original post above. I felt very sorry for Annie and Sven last year. Crossfit boasts increased work capacity across broad time and modal domains. The more that skill plays a part in it, the less it is about work capacity and the more it is about practice. If someone who'd never done CF wanted to compete, they currently couldn't do so unless they'd skipped, done Oly-lifting and gymnastics. Pure work capacity is hard to measure but I di think we could be more skill-neutral. This would bring more people in to the potential pool of competitors. So use MUs, Oly lifting etc for training but let's test fitness in a mire pure manner with running, rowing, sandbags (which Sven won last year...), lifting with less emphasis on the high skill Oly lifts and plain old horsepower.
