Thanks again to all the volunteers this weekend (especially the abuse I heaped on team judgement) for all of your help. The games couldn't have happened without you.

To the athletes: What an awesome group of people. Thanks for the inspiration! Keep doing what you do.

Looking forward to '11,
-Boz

Power cleans were accepted for this event at the Games. Does that mean it's okay for us to do that too?

Comment #3 - Posted by: Nick at July 20, 2010 5:22 PM

Did that video almost make anyone else cry? Man I love this. I did that WOD on Monday with 95lbs. I'll get there some day!

IMPORTANT QUESTION!!! I want to know if the bumper use at the Games will be availible for sale on the net like by rogue or crossfit store for example because i'm interested by this type of bumper and it would be cool to have some of those:)

According to a post by Rogue, they will have all the equipment they provided for reduced sale cost once they get them back from the games under "Closeout". Check with roguefitness.com in a few days. Give 'em time. They are the best supplier's for Crossfit equipment without par.

Comment #11 - Posted by: bafh at July 20, 2010 6:11 PM

Someone asked about the equipment, how about the games shirts warn by the judges? I only wear two types of t's, Crossfit and Under Armour, that would be a 2 for 1!

Comment #12 - Posted by: Jason at July 20, 2010 6:17 PM

Rogue Fitness gear leftover will be on the closeout tab late next week once it arrives back at our warehouse. Will include bars, sand bags, dumbbells, steel plates and some other misc items. This was posted today on there Facebook and Twitter accts. The bumpers were all sold at the Games...I emailed Sunday about them..

Ugh, that highlight video was like a trippy snowboarding video, or a remembrance for someone who died. NEED MORE SPEED! FASTER! HARDER!

Comment #18 - Posted by: Kirkland at July 20, 2010 6:56 PM

@ 18

Try to put your hands up on something higher like paralettes or boxes so you can get a deeper ROM than normal HSPUs. It is not really a real substitute for Ring HSPUs but it will still up the intensity some.

Doing what you can is always better than not doing it at all.

Comment #19 - Posted by: Nick at July 20, 2010 7:03 PM

pretty pathetic Spealer didnt get credit for winning this event. it was easily seen on video

@ #4 SarahBeth: I know exactly what you mean. Crossfit captures that rare spirit that makes life worth living. Sometimes it's over-powering. Last weekend was one of those times.

Comment #25 - Posted by: Lol Mettam at July 20, 2010 8:03 PM

Ian, I'm assuming that was your work with the vid. If that's the case you have a gift, what an awesome recap and so much of what brings back some of the best memories I have ever had in my athletic career. If others helped out, awesome work as well.

To the volunteers, judges, and those who organized the event a huge thank you! I can't explain how much I appreciate the hard work and effort that you put in to make this happen so athletes like myself can have a few moments to test what we have worked so hard to achieve. As Boz said, this would be impossible without you.

The Games are ever evolving along with the community and I think this proves true more than ever after this past weekend. What an awesome event proving to be both fun and incredibly challenging.

Thanks so much to the fans and all those that supported us as athletes. You don't know how much it motivates us out there when we have you behind us. Torn hands are long forgotten after the first rep when we have you all pulling for us.

And as for the competitors, I've NEVER been in a competition setting where I enjoy those I am around so much. You are all an inspiration, great people, and a pleasure to be around. Thank you for making all of us better athletes and pushing the envelope daily.

You guys rock, all of you, the community. Wish I could put it into words better than this.

Comment #26 - Posted by: Speal at July 20, 2010 8:11 PM

I was just wondering if we ever found out why Mikko Salo walked out early on the wheel barrow event. He seemed like such a admirable athlete in all the videos but I thought it was rather rude for him to walk out before the other athletes were even finished. I just wondered if there was some issue that caused him to leave so abruptly and perhaps I missed the explanation after the event.

Anybody have an answer?

Comment #27 - Posted by: Amykr F/38/5'9"/142 at July 20, 2010 8:25 PM

Scaled the weight to 155#. Type of clean wasn't specified, I figured squat clean. My first time trying ring handstand pushups, very fun. 15:42

Awesome work.. you truly inspire me as a guy who only ways 140 and constantly tries to keep up with the big boys. I met you once last year. I dropped in for a WOD and I appreciate you having me.

Best of luck!

To the powers that be at Crossfit:

Thank you so much for streaming the games online this year! I couldn't tear myself away from it all weekend. The whole thing was incredibly well done, from the camera and commentary, to the choice of workouts. And the athletes themselves were amazing and inspiring. I'm now ready to work out harder than ever, and I'm already looking forward to next year.

Did anyone else watch the individual wod clean and hspu part of the comp video on the crossfit live archive??? I think Spealler actually one by a hair.....at the very least they tied. If you look at who locked out first, etc... I'm pretty sure you will agree he won. I know it would'nt affect the overal score but still. Spealler definately put in work at the games!

Comment #38 - Posted by: David at July 20, 2010 10:53 PM

@27- After seeing this issue arise several times, what does it matter what prompted Mikko to leave the wheel barrow wod immediately after finishing? Have you ever competed before? Hec, I finished a wod the other day and I literally had to run out of the box to get into the restroom for an emergency run!

Point is, he is a respectful person and wouldn't do this to display poor sportsmanship. We don't have to know the reason why. Why do we continue to grow so judgmental and nosey about issues that don't concern us? Remember there are always 2 sides to every story. Not trying to pick on you, but just addressing the question with my own. :)

Thanks to both Chris Spealer and Rich Froning for checking in today. I was about 20' from Rich when he came down...all of us in the medical crew are very, very happy for you, Rich, that your heel isn't broken.

Shout out to Jeff Tucker whose job it was to organize and deploy all of the volunteers. The logistics involved in the Games are always daunting; add in the element of surprise (not even the on-the-ground coordinators got a heads up on the events) and it's simply amazing how smoothly everything went.

today's warm up. 10 Passthroughs, 10/10 KB Clean and jerk/ 10 box jumps and 1 Minute row sprint,

Today set 2 PRs during a warm up of 1) getting down the row machine to 1:26 split for 500 meters then 2) 358 meters in a minute sprint in the row machine. before the WOD, I Figure out that i have being doing the RHSPU wrong (my uperbody goes up but my legs remain in the straps of the rings) so today did regular hand stand push ups, I guess practice, practice, practice.

I wonder How long took some of the Athlethes to power clean 205, for my self it has being about 2 years from not being able to power clean 85 pounds to power clean 170 (PR). 180 squat clean. (PR)

Have a nice one. Impressive how Speal can handle that much weight the way he does.

I love crossfit, but lately, some of the workouts are utterly ridiculous. I don't mind hard workouts, but todays for instance, 4 ring handstand pushups, really? What percentage of the fit and in-shape population can actually do this. It is getting so elite crossfitter specific, that it is starting to lose its appeal to those like me, who are in pretty good shape, want a hard, but doable workout.

And yes, I know I can scale, but when you have to scale every workout, you wonder if you are still getting the benefits of the workout. Just ranting.

Is there any reason why the women's weight is always left out? Isn't it time HQ adds this?

Comment #93 - Posted by: gemma at July 21, 2010 10:11 AM

#49--It's not nice to call people nosey and judgmental even when you add a smile at the end. Concern for the top athletes is part of any sport.

#95--I emailed the HQ to request women's rx. Maybe if we all do that they will accommodate us. I was doing everything at 70%, as I had been instructed until I realized that was not a clear women's rx across the board at the games. I'm sure I will not be able to pull off the rx on everything but at least it would give me a clear goal.

Holy cow! I am a retard. I did AMRAP for 7 minutes. Dangit!
205 lbs
toes to wall progression. Weight not completely over shoulder.
did 3 rounds plus 2 HSPU Then finished off another round.
Oh well 4 rounds is probably good scaling for me anyway.

That was pretty fun. I sort of combined running with heavy Grace. And I carried on a conversation about cures for my 25 fire ant bites then about the CF games all during the wod. Not bad ;)

Wow rough workout. I;m amazed to those of you who could do this as rx'd with a good time.

First time doing ring HSPU and i wanted to get every set of them. However i would not have been able to do both ring HSPU and 205# clean. So, instead i dropped the clean weight.

7 rounds of:

3 185# Cleans
4 Ring HSPU

16:58

Ring HSPU killed my upper body (and my time for that matter lol). Will continue to work and get stronger. Was happy to just be able to do them.

Still cant do hand stand push-ups something i plan on working on and getting down. Had to sub them with raised ring push-ups. Also started out with the 205 clings but had to go down to 185 at the end of round three, this majorly killed my time.

Round 1- 3 clings 205, 15 raised ring push up's
Round 2- 3 clings 205, 15 raised ring push up's
Round 3- 2 clings 205 1 cling 185, 15 raised ring push up's

Great workout but still a bit above my level. I wasn't able to do the ring HSPU so I subbed standard HSPU. I also had to drop the clean weight to #185 in order to maintain a constant weight.

time 12:01 Cleans killed me. They were slower then I wanted, but HSPU's were good. all unbroken.

My bar mal functioned and came apart on one side. The ring that keep the weights from sliding in twards your hands came unscrewed in the middle of the workout andit took me a bit to get it togather and every set I'd have to tighten it back on.

I still took longer then I wanted to set up and go though. But it got faster as I went on, I ket telling myself ''second pull, be fast under the bar'' worked well. Collar bone sore from rubbing. Oh missed two cleans.

Just deal with it. As time goes on your grip will get stronger. Bumper plates are a luxury. Many people have gotten VERY good and very strong doing Oly lifts with only Iron. Don't let a weak grip be a reason to go for lighter weights and higher reps.

Congrats to all the athletes. Great to see Spealler make top 3. I don't know him personally, but from everything I've seen he seems to be a class act and that is worth far more than all his fitness ability. Character is what makes a true champion. I hope he stays that way. Good to see him in the Adidas ad.

I think Coach Glassman has too much substance to let CrossFit compromise its core qualities if it ever "goes mainstream" like ESPN or something.

Yes some people will be upset that it is not a small operation in Aromas, but me having gotten into this in May 2009 and not easily able to fly to Cali, the live stream was incredible!

I may be wrong, but is this the biggest event to ever be streamed live HD like this? The only event? Is CF a pioneer to do this?

Comment #126 - Posted by: brosephiroth at July 21, 2010 1:12 PM

Not as Rx'd...185lb Cleans

9:35

I am amazed at how many people tried to do this WOD as Rx'd with times in the 15+ minute domain. I think that totally defeats the purpose. The competitors at the games were finishing this in 5-6 minutes and that is a whole different stimulus than 15-20. Could I have done this with 205? Yes...but I would not have been able to maintain any intensity which I think is the purpose of this workout.

Again faster has a really good aricle on this very subject that I would suggest folks read.

http://www.againfaster.com/articles/zatsiorsky-scaling-and-power.html

Remember this WOD was designed for the best of the best...very few of us on this site are at the "elite" status that these workouts were designed for. Remember one of the keys to CrossFit is the ability to check your ego at the door.

Comment #129 - Posted by: Bphantom at July 21, 2010 1:24 PM

So, I can power clean 185 just fine but I certainly couldn't squat clean it, much less 21 times. So, I went with 185, with "vertical pushups" as a way of getting to HSPU. But, then I decided I wanted to do squat cleans, so I dropped to 135. I have to say, I felt like the workout was better with the squat clean. Good stuff.

Some random thoughts about this year's Games. As a competitor twice (the first two), and now working for CF HQ, let me come at this from two different perspectives.

1 - I'm a sports addict. I rarely miss the ESPN highlights and I get a feed to keep up with the Red Sox. We will all be looking back years from now talking about how a sport was launched this past weekend. It was an amazing event to watch. Our ESPN classic moment will be Speal and Graham on the first WoD under the lights, along with about 10 others from this weekend.

2 - I got a chance to sit with some non-CF'ers throughout the Games - they were blown away. More importantly, they wanted to know where the closest affiliate was to them. Let's try to remember to think "big tent" and not cry about these new "wannabe's." Our nostalgia for Aromas and "keepin' it real" can blind us to the fact that if Coach and Lauren had been so insular, there would be no Speal, or Rich Froning, or Annie Thorisdottir, Mikko, or Graham Holmberg. It would have stopped at Josh Everett and Greg Amundson, or Dave Leys and Rob Miller.
The torch gets passed because we open it up to the world.

3 - Whoever was babbling about "selling out" - please. Big money has been thrown at CF a number of times. I know because I've written a few of the rejection letters on behalf of CF HQ. But we also have to understand that putting on a free live stream costs A LOT of money. We'll likely come up short (by a good bit) on this year's Games, but it was worth it to bring it to our worldwide family and to show others what it is that we do. I've heard an old saying that says that money (lots of it) only makes you more of what you are. If that's the case, they can bring it in wheelbarrows like the sandbag WoD - we'll be just fine. If you had seen the level of generosity I have by Coach and others, you'd understand that corporate sponsorship is no threat to our soul. We're just fine in that department. Graham Holmberg and Kristan Clever won $25,000 for their efforts; does anyone think they are now "sellouts"? Let's not utter platitudes and trite bromides merely to throw stones. Let's hear legitimate, well considered and reasoned criticisms as to the "why $$ and corporate sponsors are going to ruin CrossFit" debate. I have yet to hear any intelligent arguments on why this is bad for our community.

4 - My hat goes off to all of the athletes, from masters to Affiliate teams. The volunteers were awesome - even the guy who wouldn't let me in because I wasn't on the list. Or Coach's dad. Or Coach. (True story - but not the same guy each time). Tony Budding and Dave Castro deserve a standing ovation, as does Justin Bergh. Great job, boys.

5 - The commentators and analysts did a great job, so far from what I've seen going back and watching the live stream. How cool to hear Josh E. analyzing the HSPU workout? By the way, I hope Josh won the banner from the sponsors for most pullups at the booth they had setup (57). I doubt you'll see Madden doing that anytime soon.

Best to all the fans, as well. The HD center folks said they've never seen anything like it in terms of civility to their staff, helpfulness, and lack of complaints (according to someone there, only one complaint, and it was that the place was "too clean" for the CF Games. Another person waxing nostalgic for Aromas, evidently.)

Cheers to all. Let's train hard again, not just for next year's Games, but for tomorrow's task that we don't know is coming.

Thanks! When I first tried CF, I decided to give it a 30 day trial. Of course after the 30 days, I didn't want to stop. So I changed the trial to 30 WODs. That's when I went back and numbered them. Needless to say, I didn't return after 30 WODs either. In fact, I haven't missed a posted WOD since I started! LOL.

Wow...was already pretty beat and this was tough. No room in the Stryker gym for hand-stand push-up nonsense, so I decided on:

7 rds for time of:
175-lb power clean x 3
175-lb push jerk x 4

13:55 (had to mix and match to get all the jerks, but did all the reps)

As rx'd, 13:58.

This is one of those WODs I was just glad to finish. Cleans went great - I did some power cleans and some split cleans. Only failed on one rep, the very last one in round 7 - otherwise unbroken sets, though I dropped the weight after every rep. Ring HSPUs went a little more smoothly than last time, but only the first round unbroken. Started doing singles from round 5 on. This was a tough but super fun WOD.
