Hotel workout with Jason Khalipa and Chris Spealler - video [wmv] [mov]

"Revisiting Combat Outpost Reilly" by CJ Chivers, The New York Times.

"What it comes down to is that success demands singleness of purpose. Some call it mental toughness; I think it is singleness of purpose and, once you have agreed upon the price that you and your family must pay for success, it enables you to forget that price. It enables you to ignore the minor hurts, the opponent's pressure and the temporary failures."

That dumbbell workout looks nasty! With the burpee punishment! And Jason says he would recommend it to someone on vacation...who wants to do burpees on vacation? haha
On a side note...that hotel fitness room is ridiculous, I wish the hotels I stay at had fitness rooms like that.

Comment #1 - Posted by: Joey m/22/193 at May 21, 2010 5:08 PM

Couplet most horrid! Excellent job as always Jason. I'm going to get some of my trainees to try this (after I've given it a go, of course).

3-2-1-and die slowly from pushing/extending...The upside? 3 wonderful movements to make me better!

Thanks Crossfit and RIP J.T.

Watching the video of Khalipa doing the "inferior" globo gym exercises was really disappointing. The actual wod he did was awesome. The video really could have done without the mocking of the globo gym exercises. Crossfit is awesome, but frankly this elitist attitude is a HUGE mistake that really turns people who might otherwise be interested in the crossfitting away. I KNOW that there are so many GOOD people in the Crossfit community, but it frustrates me to see these cheap shots being taken at the "inferior glob gymers". Crossfit is better than that. Humility is a good trait.

Khalipa's Travel WOD-as programmed by Spealler- is a derivative of CF Football's WOD "Kalsu" which is 100 135 lb. Thrusters with 5 burpees on the minute. Just to give credit where it's due.

"Kalsu" is supposed to be one of the hardest WOD's ever. EVER.

I've never tried but if you don't believe me do it and have fun.

Comment #13 - Posted by: Paul Siegel at May 21, 2010 6:59 PM

Can anyone give me a legit idea of how long I'll be out for acl surgery till I'm back to full force CF? scheduled surgery today and I'm not exactly stocked for the down time

Comment #14 - Posted by: JM at May 21, 2010 7:25 PM

@#11

Cross-fitters aren't monks or nuns, they are elite athletes that have the right to do whatever they want. Though the workouts can be scaled they are intended for cops, firefighters, and military personnel, who for the most part ridicule each other to no end at every given chance.

On that same note; everyday this week I have had to scroll through the absurd complaints about video's cursing, critique of a crossfit champions correct burpee technique, and now someone is complaining about making fun of idiotic exercises. My only complaint about the crossfit website is that it's too expensive, hey wait its free.

Comment #18 - Posted by: Alan 25/5'8"/165 at May 21, 2010 7:56 PM

I had two acl reconstructions. One on each knee. It's a very slow recovery. Each method is fine. I had the patella graph on each. I've heard that the cadaver transplant is a quicker intitial recovery, but each takes the same amount of time to get back to the type of word out crossfit demands. I'd say six to eight months. More on the eight months side. Keep your hamstrings strong. It will help tremendously with stability later on. Weak hamstrings attribute to most acl injuries in younger people. Kids tend to not work on they're hamstrings.

Comment #19 - Posted by: Paul at May 21, 2010 8:01 PM

Acl injuries are typically 9-12 months but I have had athletes return to collegiate soccer etc at the 5.5-6 month mark. It depends on your type of graft, how your body heals and many other factors. Find a good PT or ATC who works a lot with athletes and make sure your doc knows what your goals are (ie: crossfit). Prehab is important too before surgery. You want as much range of motion a d strength as you can beforehand. I'm an athletic trainer and rehab ACLs for a living....it sucks for awhile but stay focused and positive. Good luck!
Ps... Paul is right hammys are vital.

Comment #25 - Posted by: epg at May 21, 2010 11:21 PM

To JM #14:

It can vary depending on what is being done. I ruptured my ACL in my left knee and tore both menisci. I had a patella graft, and was on crutches for 6 weeks then 4 months of rehab after. I ran cross country that summer (finished therapy beginning of may) but it was a slow road to getting back to full strength. I would say plan on 6-9 months to be at full strength but again will depend on how long you on crutches and if you had meniscus damage, and if you are doing a cadaver graft or one from your own body. Hope that helps.

JM

re ACL reconstruction. I've had a couple. My advice to you...more than anything else, follow the rehab program on your ITB and VMO. The biggest danger is tracking issues with your kneecap.

You need to strengther the smallest of the quadriceps muscles and keep the thick muscle that connects your knee to your thigh bone loose. If you don't, you set back recovery and...there's pain.

good luck with it - get a good physio and do what they tell you

Paul #13, if you go to Crossfit Newcastle's site (Newcastle Australia), you'll see a video of their resident beast Pete Maxwell doing Kalsu.

I can't wait to do this WOD again at CFVoltage where I now train it is aka Burke Breaker...
Aug 2, 2009 I did JT at my house with handstand holds and slow ring dips, bad idea. The WOD was on Sun...Mon I was fine, Tues normal soreness, Wed was difficult to clothe myself, by Thurs I had lost all range of motion in my arms. My triceps looked like they were sliding down past my elbow. I was in the hospital for 4 1/2 days with Rhabdo. I recovered and took almost three months off to really heal. I was nervous to jump back in but did in Oct and haven't looked back. So today JT and meet again and I am stronger and Very ready this time.

#11 i dont see it as elitist at all. there was nothing malicious in either jason's or spealler's actions or facial expressions. in fact, it was hilarious and they were smiling the entire time. nothing wrong with poking good fun at the conventionally accepted--albeit mistakenly so--ideas of what constitutes a fitness routine. when 20 min on the elliptical or fat burn is juxtaposed with a real burner like cindy or barbara, those exercises do quickly become jokes. i expect anyone who has done both would agree.

another example: there's nothing elitist about Louie Simmons saying that his athletes will get much stronger with barbells and bands and big weights than they will with dumbbell curls. its just a fact.

so please, take a chill pill and let's keep these forums positive.

Almost walked away from J.T. after the first round. Then I remembered something that I read in the comments section from one of Brad McKee's Disposable Hero videos: Brad would yell during Hero workouts that these guys didn't give up on us, don't give up on them.

This got me back in the workout and I finished it. Handstand pushups weren't pretty but everything else was legit.

Thank you J.T. for your service to our country, Crossfit for the living memorial to J.T. and Brad for motivating me to finish this one.

Did the 1st 21 HSPU on 2" blocks. Wrecked me for the rest of the workout - focused on finishing the reps as strict as possible.

First time as rx'd! 16:55.

Previous J.T. efforts have been with 2:1 bar dips, but in both attempts, I crashed and burned in the round of 15, and had to scale back the HSPUs. This time, I was able to get through, but HSPUs started becoming singles in the round of 15, and the last nine were all singles (took 4+ minutes!). Had to make up a few reps for failed HSPUs and a couple ring dips which were not fully locked out. Pushups seemed easier than last time, but were still broken.

I have to face the wall then walk my hands backwards towards it, and feet up the wall for HSPU's. Not sure if this counts as "as prescribed" or not. For some reason my body is disfunctionally imbalanced flipping over to get heels on the wall.

Apart from that it was as prescribed. That time had some "change" on the end of it, too!

This was the first time that I ever did this WOD with regular dips... the rings at my gym were really up high and I would have had to muscle up every time.. I didn't want to do that, so I improvised and used a dip station... actually I thought it was almost as hard... I'm good at the ring dips, so those aren't usually where I feel it.. although I do feel it in my inner shoulder usually the next day.
Well, the last couple WODs for me have been a substatial bit slower for me.. about 2 minutes slower than normal on the 4 x 400 & 50 air squat WOD and then today's WOD was slower than normal as well... lots of D.U.s after the WOD..I'm wondering if the overhead squatting effected my shoulders a little for today's following WOD.. I don't religiously follow the mainsite's wods but I try to keep up mostly and follow the rhythm. Good WOD.. I really didn't want to do too much with my legs last night, so this was a good choice for me in general.

I tried to do weighted bar dips with 45 kg rather than ring dips, but I had no strength for that after the HSPUs. Instead I just did regular bar dips. I did do 14 HSPUs in a row, so that's a personal best. I had to do HSPUs with feet hooked onto the Smith machine somewhere in the middle of round 2 onward. Hope to improve on these going forward.

HSPU from squat rack
assisted ring dips (the upward motion) ( I can do ring dips, but not that many, and not with all the other pushing)
pushups

21-15-9 reps of:
Standing Shoulder Press (135 lbs for first 23 reps, 115 lbs for final 22 reps)
Bar dips
Push-ups

Started strong and got worked fast! Had to lower the weight on SSP after first try in round two; 135 lbs could've taken all day.

I did this fun time un-timed; hspups were about half of full rom, dips were performed using a chair for my grip and a chair for me feet and push ups were done normally.

Surprising since HSPU so tough. 13 unbroken 1st round. Then 1's & 2's for remainder & 15 round. 1's only for 9 round. ROM not great overall. Dips tough to start w/then better. Faster drop & keep core tight.
Pushups tough. Only 5's,4's,3's.

HSPUs head to floor without kipping, full ROM ringdips, honest push-ups.
10 unbroken HSPUs in the first round, singles and doubles in round 2 and assisted HSPUs in round 3.
HSPUs are another one of my weaknesses that seems to improve only very slowly, (like snatches, all overhead work, double unders, running...)

After first round I wasn't getting full range of motion on the HSPU, and after second round switched to elevated push-ups with feet on bar of smith machine about 4ft off the floor. Everything was broken, but not as badly as the last time I did this WOD about a year ago when my time was 16 min+.
