Good no pullups, hands are pretty torn up after Eva. I love Crossfit.

Comment #3 - Posted by: Globo at May 15, 2010 5:21 PM

Paul is evidently a beast. Interesting how his split snatches improved as he went along; I thought he was going to find them really tough after the first few which were pretty much muscle snatches. Great MUs too.

Comment #4 - Posted by: Lol Mettam at May 15, 2010 5:29 PM

wow, one of the sickest vids in a while, paul smith is a MONSTER!

and i hate to be that guy but what is the song that's playing? really got me pumped

Comment #5 - Posted by: Mike Essman at May 15, 2010 5:29 PM

Well, I decided to test out Crossfit and attend the Bobsleigh Canada talent ID camp here in Ottawa. We are tested on 30 and 45m sprints, bounding (5 broadjumps in a row for total distance) and 1 rep maxes for power cleans and front squats.

Once upon a time I was an elite rower (14 years ago) so this is all a lark. Something tells me Bobsleigh Canada is not looking for 40 year old Moms but I feel more prepared for these tests by crossfitting this past year than I would have even 10 years ago.

Wish me luck. :)

Comment #6 - Posted by: JuliePlatt at May 15, 2010 5:37 PM

I'm attending the Olympic weight lifting cert this weekend and have learned so much. The snatch and C&J are really some technical movements and theres so many different variations.

C&J for lunch tomorrow. Sweet.

Paul Smith = another CF beast. Is he competing in the games this year? That was some brutally strong efforts he put out there. Yikes.

Come work out at CFBWI on me for the month of June! That is amazing dedication in such a small space and it should be rewarded. Give me a call

Comment #16 - Posted by: Jonathan at May 15, 2010 7:19 PM

@#9
So the 1-1-1-1-1-1-1 is for maxing out. For the first weight, you'll pick an easy weight ~50% and from there you'll keep on increasing your weight. At about the 4th rep (you do 7 sets of 1 with some rest in between) you'll want to be at a weight you think you can only do once. It should be hard. If you get it, keep upping the weight in increments (~5lbs) until you find your true 1rep max. This is how we do it at school. good luck!

Comment #17 - Posted by: rh at May 15, 2010 7:20 PM

i really love crossfit work out program, but i must say people are a little to cocky its very annoying. i've been doing crossfit for over 2 years by myself.. but wanted to go to a real cf gym here in SA, only to disappointed when everyone got pissed off when i was making better times than everyone else! i've been to three different cf gyms so is this really how cf is in texas?!? i mean plz help me out if im wrong here.

Kristoffer,

I have trained at Crossfit BWI for the past couple months and it has been very helpful. I am moving next week and will be done at BWI but I think you should take Ryan up on his offer because even one month can make a big difference. (I'm also located in Columbia)

There is no way that balcony is built to handle that kind of weight.. Dumping a heavy deadlift could get dangerous.

Comment #29 - Posted by: Cookie at May 15, 2010 9:14 PM

To #26, it appears that the bar has less than 150# on it. Those balconies have to be able to hold at least 2 tons to be up to code. He's OK.

To Kristoffer- Awesome setup for such a small area. And, with that you can do 80% of CF workouts with only small modifications.

Sunday musings...

1) Anniversary. The Crossfit community has spawned a number of really cool "friendships" in the 4+ years that I've been here. Let's all raise a great big FRAT glass in honor of Goat and Pony, a one-year anniversary!

2) Community. While on the subject, the Crossfit community is one of the three great pillars of Crossfit, one of the really super things that makes Crossfit so special. Once upon a time this community existed in a very small number of Crossfit gyms, on the Message Board, and right here on Crossfit.com.

If you only look here it seems as if our community has shrunken. But if you look a little closer, turnover a few more rocks, you see that the community has actually GROWN, and grown explosively. It's just that the growth has happened someplace else. Almost 2000 Crossfit affiliates! Have you looked at the social media universe lately and tried to find Crossfit? Good grief! Crossfit is literally all over Facebook, Twitter, and the like.

The Crossfit table keeps growing. Pull up a seat! Bring your friends.

3) Fail. Clan bingo is part of the larger lacrosse clan. "The Heir", "Lovely Daughter", and Lil'bingo have all been involved in the lacrosse program at their public high school. Lacrosse is an interesting sport; I've often said that it's the perfect sport for boys. You get to do everything in mother told you not to do: you get to run with a stick, and you get to hit people with it!

Over the five years that we've been involved in this program there have been two boys who I believe could have been really helped by the adults involved, and collectively we have all failed. What these two boys have in common is physique -- they're both very large young men -- and a certain level of aggressiveness that stands out in suburbia. Being hit by these boys is an event.

Both of these boys were defensemen, and both of them were "marked man" when it came to lacrosse officials. Both were routinely penalized for legal hits, the officials flag sometimes on the way out of his pocket before the hit occurred, victims of their size and reputation. Both had their careers ended prematurely by being ejected from games after big hits.

Where the two boys differ is in personality. The older of the two, a classmate of "The Heir", was a hothead. Vary chippy. Always lipping off. The younger of the two, classmate of Lil'bingo, is quite the opposite. Truly a gentle giant. And yet we adults failed each of these boys in exactly the same way. We failed to realize that they were on the receiving end of unfair official attention, and once we came to this realization we failed to act upon it. Both of these boys had an unhappy conclusion to their high school lacrosse careers because of our failure as adults. We should have asked for help from supervisors of the officials, pointed out the obvious and asked them to better instruct the referees. We should have worked one-on-one with these boys to help them learn about themselves and others, how standing out is both good and bad, how other's reaction to you standing out is often out of your control.

I struggle with the role of youth sports in high school sports in the development of our young men and women. Safety, character development, sports as a vehicle for education, each of these seems to me to be so much more important than winning and losing, so much more important than the score. And yet what I see time and again is officials, not only referees and umpires but athletic directors, principals, and coaches, forgetting that these athletic endeavors are part of the educational process. Missing the opportunity to teach through the prism of the sport or event. Even those of us who watch on the sidelines, provide other types of support for these programs, are guilty.

The younger of these two boys "lives" at my house, Lil'bingo's close friend. As such my own personal opportunity to teach, to help him come to grips with being singled out by one group of adults for behavior that another group encourages, is still available. But the opportunity to PROTECT was missed by all of us.

Fail.

4.) Flawed. We are all flawed creatures, we human beings. This is not news, and anyone in need of convincing has only to turn on the television, open a newspaper, launch a search engine and look at their Yahoo. Flaws big and small, but flaws in all.

The discovery of flaws is an interesting process, don't you think? When you discover a flaw in yourself, what is your reaction? Do you deny it? Do you embrace it? Is it a flaw that is amenable to change, or is it one that must be accepted, a need for a workaround? No answers here, really. Just the kind of question I think each of us should be willing to ask. Seeking to ask.

Homework, part of the education in OUR sport, in Crossfit, as it were.

I'l see you next week...

I'm moving to Texas, so I hope all CF's there are not cocky like that! Maybe they're just mad because you're blowing them out of the water! Something which I will not be doing. Very excited to go to Crossfit GSX in Ft. Worth!

People are competitive in this, I catch myself hating ALL the time, and have learned to let it go. I look and feel good, so who cares if my shoulder press sucks.. it's not my strong point.. and I accept that in order to get better, I have to work for it.. not be jealous of someone else in a negative way.

Learn to be thankful for what you have, and honor achievements in others. As long as those people use it as a tool for positive improvement, their attitude will reflect that philosophy.

I've been doing X-fit for about a year (36/m/160). I have become the strongest that I have ever been in my life. However, my body stores fat in my thighs and butt. I recognized that my carb intake is much high than it should be, so I decided to eat a X-fit recommended block diet. Is in normal for me to feel hungry between meals? Will my body adjust to this new form of energy intake, or do I need to increase the amount of quality food I eat?

Here are my stats for the bobsleigh Canada talent ID camp

30m sprint from a start 4.98s(entry level is 4.35s)
30m sprint (the last 30 m of a 60m sprint 4.35sec - entry level is 4.00 sec)

so... I'm slow

80kg 1 rep max Power cleans (entry level is 60 -70kg and development level is 70 - 90kg
93kg 1 rep max Front squats (entry level is 70 - 80kg and development level is 90 - 100kg)
61.5kg 1 rep max bench press (not sure what the targets are.... but I never do bench press)

So... I'm pretty strong

5 bounds for distance where you can't reset after each jump... for total distance. My distance = 11.35m. Entry level is 10 - 11m and Development level is 11 - 12 m.

So... I can bound.

It was good fun to do. There weren't many people there which surprised me. It seems like a really cool sport.... and if I was 15 years younger... I'd try to improve my sprinting and give the sport a go.

Glad I did it. It was nice to get out and see some other athletes and try to reach some new PRs (which I didn't... but I did equal them). Now it's back to the garage.

Bobby...
Yes the bar needs to end up overhead. Perform a clean and then with the bar in the rack position readjust your grip and feet if needed and then perform a jerk. It does not need to be one motion like a thruster. Hope this helps

Question about power cleans vs squat cleans
Is it normal that my power clean is much, much stronger? This time around, I started trying to do full squat cleans, but by the time the weight got up, they slowly (ok, quickly) turned into power cleans. Everything I've read on the message boards seems to suggest squat clean is the stronger clean. Do I just need to work technique?

day 10 of crossfit. i'm a couple days behind, so i have time to view vids, do research, try to schedule the time i think it will take, etc. i gotta say, crossfit is amazing. my times are are nowhere near what i see posted, but you crossfit vets get me freakin amped with your sick times! the vids with the great music helps too. i have more energy than ever, and i'm lovin this stuff.

i was sore as hell today from doing the last 2 days, but went at a scaled eva today. still was crazy tough. used a 55 pound barbell instead of a 2-pood kb, and did heavily assisted pull-ups. only got 22 or 23 the last few rounds, even with the assist. almost puked several times. took me 59 minutes. LOVE THIS! Thanks

As Rx: 135-135-135-135-135-135-135.

C/D: hip extension, 1x50; handstand hold, 1 minute.

Off 1RM PR (220#) at 135# by 85#. Full squat clean and push jerk.

Had to keep the load light due to the L-ankle injury sustained during Eva on Friday. Went to the ER yesterday and x-rays were negative. Wasn't able to put weight on it until today. Swelling is going down and the entire foot is starting to look black and blue. Very little pain with the cleans today, but the jerks (even with a light jump) were a little more painful. I was very careful not to do further damage.

No experience with Clean and Jerks so I tried to keep it light enough to maintain correct form. These are really tough.

I was kind of scared to do them but as I did them I felt very good and the movement felt more natural than I expected.

I think I may have went too low though. When I was doing the clean I would end up with my butt basically on the floor before raising the weight back up for the jerk.

Anyway

trying to be really careful not to over arch the back , that's my issue with all the overhead stuff but the core strength and shoulder flexibility is improving

Sorry if this was already covered but is it standard to catch the bar in a squat or at the top like a power clean?
Thanks!

Did this after playing in two b ball games an hour apart...was sore and got a knee in the left calf that was killing me but wanted to get the workout in...on the 155 fs the clean wasn't a problem but just couldn't hold it up there on the jerk...if I was fresh I think I could've done it

Power cleans since my front squat is still lagging behind -- really need to get on that. Only 5 sets: can't drop in gym (yet...), and was getting a bit of arm pain from lowering to rack. Probably could've gotten 245.

First time doing clean and jerk. Cleans felt much better than the last time I did them. Still nervous about dumping weight. The gym we have here is made of old wood that is ready to give at any time and we have no bumper plates so the minute it feels like I may fail the lift I just take the weight to the floor.

I've been having lower back issues lately, and the jerk portion of this WOD made my back spasm, so I kept it pretty light and focused on form. However, b/c of my back, my form on the jerks was terrible. Hopefully I'll sort it out before next time around.

Clean and Jerk 1-1-1-1-1-1-1 reps

40kg,45kg,45kg,45kg,47.5kg,47.5kg,50kg

Only managed 50kg because someone sneaked the weights on when I wasn't looking. Struggled with this, kept seeing stars after the cleans, then had to wait for the them to go before I could jerk.

Tommy wanted to know when I was going to actually put some weight on, instead of it being a warm up weight and Pedro was stomping and prowling about with the pain from his elbow.

Good Fun

Clean and Jerk.
From floor. Full squat clean. Split on jerk.

89 111 122 133 138(F) 138(power clean) 138 (ugly)

The 133 went up normal, but I could not clean the 138. I finally got a realy ugly one up, but it was more of a power clean with front squat. I think my problem is that I am jumping a little backward and therefore catching the weight too far forward. As the weight goes up, I fall forward and cannot get into the squat.

Also, I'm having a hard time racking the weight in such a way as to be able to grab it later. I am racking with open hand and fingers only due to flexibility. Makes it harder to regrab the bar on the jerk.

Need to practice.

That 138 was a PR, but its almost not worth mentioning.. Almost.
