The North Central Regionals video is crazy! I can't believe the amazing performances that came out of there. The crowd at the finals in Cali is going to be a sick bunch of genetic freaks (that is meant as a compliment of course).

What’s the exercise called where you—-

Squat clean into a thruster into a back squat…....

Or more broken down…
-Clean
-Front Squat
-Push Press
-Back squat…

And then either push press again and bring the weight back in front of you or drop it and repeat.

Mike, are you talking about the bear complex?

Power clean -> Front squat -> Push press -> Back Squat -> Behind-the-neck push press -> Repeat for a total of seven times without dropping the barbell

I have a question that might be better for the forum but I can't get my login to work. Anyways, maybe someone can help. In all of the videos that I see, people are doing their pullups with an overhand grip. What are the pros and cons of overhand and underhand grips? Any help would be appreciated.

An off topics question: I've been cross-fitting for 9 months and have seen great progress so far, thanks CF!
However, the last month I've felt more and more tired and my times/weights have not improved. I know progress takes a while but I'm sure many of you have experienced and fought the same battle and maybe can share some tips and tricks how to "take it to the next level"? Thankful for all thoughts.

Jake the body needs rest for good recovery or you will eventually crash ... have you backed off for a 50% week in the last 9 months or taken a week and just did stretching, rollers, massages etc.? While there are a few mutants that may never need a break most of us mere humans need to train smart to stay on top of our game and that means some planned rest now and then ... hope this helps

I had a similar quick progress when i first started too, as does everyone i think.

Once you get past that i think the best way to kick it up a gear is to make sure your diet is not holding you back. These are my general diet rules but i have bad days like everyone;

1. Have 1.5-2g of protien per kg of bodyweight a day
2. Always eat carbs and fats with your protien
3. Eat every 2-3 hours, or you just wont reach your protein quota
4. Have a WPI and bananna after the WOD
5. Drink heaps of water
6. I have fish oil, and a multi vit but they are more to keep me going then to break out of a training rut

I have tried the zone but can't be bothered counting out the carbs and fat portions. I still eat mainly from the good zone foods list. If i've got too much of a hole in my diet plan it hasn't shown up yet but i'll deal with that plateau when i get there.

Total time including rest 32:15 (PR was 28:51 with anchored sit-ups on floor)

All rounds unbroken. I used to break the push-ups in round 4 and 5 but today I found out that was only due to mental failure not muscular failure. It was just more comfortable to take a short break and shake out the arms instead of pushing through. Dedication is key.

Unanchored abmat sit-ups were very slow.

#41, take a week off, I just took one off this past 3day cycle, drink beer and sleep a lot, it might not be the best advice but it works for me, the body might be asking for rest. thinking about doing Barbara as much as i can before getting the Headache from the Altitude in Colorado, GLAD TO BE BACK TODAY FROM MY 5th Deployment from Afghanistan. I'm so excited to start these workouts. Having 10 years of 'traditional' weight lifting workout routines experience, I was very timid to change my workouts. I started martial arts 3-4 years ago, and I've competed 5 times in the cage. I always felt like something was missing and feel as though this can be that bridge to overall fitness and functional strength. I hope to become the strongest and most in shape version of myself.
If someone with more knowledge and experience wishes to message me with tips, etc. I'd be most appreciative. Thank you.

50,56,58,72 thanks for your suggestions. i'll try to take a week off although i might be back after couple of days, too much energy, get kinda frustrated if I "rest". :)
I thought about taking up on my occasional swim-workouts to stretch out sore muscles and change workload a bit, any thought about this?

Comment #107 - Posted by: Nick801 at May 4, 2010 8:03 AM

another "swim" question:
With crossfit progressing rapidly (the games expanding etc), how come this hasn't been involved in some workout? I'm sure our smart coaches could figure out good subs for swimming (another cardio activity, row,run etc) for those who don't have access to a pool/open water and I believe swimming is a vital part of being "cross fit", am I wrong?
I know crossfit endurance uses swimming but the main site isn't and after a quick google session, I can't see that it has been incorporated in any previous crossfit games.

500 meter row for warm up,

Only did 3 rounds of Barbara with the 20 pound vest. getting my body used to the altitude of Colorado. Josiah about the vest the one i have i got it from Walmart, I also have a military one but it is way heavier than the walmart one, there are some heaavier vest but really i dont see my self doing a lot of WODs with an expensive heavier vest, so the 20 pound one from walmart works perfect for me.

Total load time: 19 min. 12 seconds (01/02/2010 was 17:31 PR) I would attribute this decrease in time to fatigue from Adventure Race on 05/01/2010, legs are still sore from dragging large canoe through the mud about 75 yards at the end of the 3 hour race. Overall still felt decent, slight pukie sensation at RIII, but recovered well.

2:14!! PR!
2:16! Runner up PR to the 2:14
2:30 - very short pause on pushups, squats getting slower
2:34 - several short pauses on the pushups killed my time. Just could not achieve a solid lockout so I had to break to get my tricep strength back to finish with good form.

Good to see training/competing in powerlifting followed by the current 20 rep squat program (to be followed with another cycle of PL so I am ready to compete in Nationals again this year) is not hurting my ability to do many of the WODs as well as I have in the past.

20 kipping pullups
30 chest to deck pushups, elbows locked out at top
40 anchored situps with thumbs on chest and heel of hand touching quads each rep
50 below parallel squats with full hip extension at top

Rest 10 minutes

5 rounds with 2 min break between each round:

20 double battling rope undulations to touch a band stretched 24" over the rope
20 36# kb power swings
20 seconds of battling rope in and outs, singles or side swings at max intense

This not as rx’d. Rx’d is BW, and I had to rack after BS and then Jerk it. I cannot jerk from behind the head at 115#. Decided to work on that with lighter wts another day and save my neck from crashing bar into it. I don’t recall anything about rest time, it might have been just “for time”. Either way, I loved this combo.

Pull-ups killed me today...everything else unbroken. Formed a couple of blood blisters on the pull-ups...think that means I need to find a new pull-up bar...pretty sure rust stained hands at the end is not right.

Spent more time doing a post-WOD toilet bowl hover than I did doing the WOD itself! I'm considering my epic battle with Mr. Pukie a victory, since I only had one drive heave! :) L-shldr injury was still flared-up going into this, so the first couple rounds of pull-ups were painful. I lost a few seconds because some maniac woman came up right next to me, bent down, and picked up my timer while I was holding the barbell overhead. I said, "Excuse me, I need to put this down," and she eventually moved and gave my timer back, but she was so out of it that she didn't realize she would be mashed when I brought the bar down. A BIG PR for me.. I was going for sub 3 minutes on each round.. ESPECIALLY the last round... that's the killer round... then I decided to just go really hard for each round and see if I failed... I did almost all sets unbroken.. except for my last two rounds of pushups.. I broke those a little. This is one of those classic WODs. Even though I'm a bit under the weather... cold and coughing and I had only 3 hours of sleep last night... I was working on a day off and I think that made a difference. Happy with my results... pretty big improvement on my last PR.

time for each round was 2:21/2:10/2:15/3:49/3:38

Majorly slowed down by pullups after the first 2 rounds and holding down some pukiness on situps in round 3. Excellent workout, I'll have to see how it goes RXed another time.

This is my second WOD of CrossFit. Are people subtracting the rest times? If so, then I got 32 mins for the Barbara. I feel like I'm weak compared to the times listed here. The push-ups and sit-ups were easy. The kips are killing my hands, and the squats is nice on the lower body. I'm a day behind, wish there were others in Camp Virginia.

My pull-ups were suckin because I was on a wide bar and also I got this nasty cut that's finally healing after a long time that's right on the inside of the lower groove of the ring finger that keeps on opening up due to the finger moving. I'm glad it's finally healing. I thought I would need stitches for it.

I suck at push-ups. That's just me...

my squats were really strong due to me obsessing with stretching my legs literally all the time to fix my air squat. I was able to move faster and stand more upright.

Not bad for me getting right off work doing restock and then moving heavy furniture into the new house and then doing the WOD...

Only managed 3 rounds but otherwise as rx'd

Cut my loses after the 3rd round as my intensity was totally gone and I want to be able to do a WOD tomorrow, figure it'll take me a week or two to get back into the swing of things.

Not sure what I'm doing wrong, but hard to find times on here that suck more than mine. Bodyweight WODs always expose us bigger dudes, but still. First set unbroken (and fewer pullups), but still waaaaay slower than most. Situp cycle time seems especially slow; hands on ears & feet anchored. Oh well.

Down at St. Pete Beach Florida when this one was called...thus I laid on the beach instead of doing this WOD.

She did this WOD instead of CFT today since her lower back was hurting from the 100506 WOD (squat cleans/sit-ups) that was done yesterday. Lifting weights increases the lower back pain.
