YESSS! been waitin for Total for months!

Comment #1 - Posted by: Izzy at May 7, 2010 5:04 PM

I was lucky enough to judge at last years games and will be doing so again this year in L.A but I am glad I got to experience the games where it all started. On a another note it's great so see the games come out from the hills and go prime time in L.a. I can only imagine what that kind of exposure will do for CrossFit.

Ian 6,
read the article linked under the words "Crossfit Total".

Frank 3,
Rip was very involved with CF. He ran the Barbell Certs for a while. He knows the moves inside and out. He has many articles and videos on the main CF site and CFJ.

Greg 8,
Most people deadlift more than they can squat. However, Louie Simmons and the Westside guys all squat more than they deadlift (but they are squatting like 900+)....Their totals (with bench, not press) are 2000 to 2500. Ridiculously high! I suspect at somepoint, your hands cannot hold the bar, but for the squat it just goes on your shoulders. I can't confirm that though. It just intuitively makes sense that your wrists would be the weakest part of a deadlift because of the smaller muscles.

Comment #10 - Posted by: Matt_in_Oz at May 7, 2010 6:51 PM

I really feel like "run 1 mile" should be added to the end of this workout. I understand the whole idea of "totalling" your poundage for the CrossFit "total," and that it is a test of strength. But it just seems like it would be a perfect overall fitness (in the spirit of CrossFit) test if running, one the most basic human movements, were added to the end...This would also balance out overall scores for us smaller folk. Any thoughts?

Comment #11 - Posted by: sam_R at May 7, 2010 7:08 PM

#12....if you're "smaller folk" add a strength component to your training. The purpose of the Total is to test how your strength has increased while crossfitting. It isn't supposed to be anything more.

I also read the crossfit total article, I am only puzzled on one aspect - although I am new to crossfit I have weight trained previously to this so I am familiar with the three lists - however at he end of the article it states if you do not know you target weight you shouldn't be doing this. My comment is if I know that my numbers or poundages will be very weak does that mean I should do another workout instead of this one. Is that the consensus on here???

Comment #15 - Posted by: J-F/19/155/5'9 at May 7, 2010 8:19 PM

#12: No. There are days where its specifically bodyweight metcon, there are 5k days, this day is for 1RM testing. This lets you know where you may need to add some extra work, just like if your run time goes down on a different WOD. Plus the energy pathway for this is different than running a mile. Not every workout has to hit all fitness points, its the overall that averages out to total fitness.

#14: It doesn't mean if you're weak don't do the lifts. It means that if you have never done a total you will not have any idea where you will end up. Personally I know approximately what all my 1 rep maxes are so I can guage what is too light to start with or what might be too heavy to start. Just start light and work your way up on all the lifts. If its way too light, then now you know. A part of this is knowing what your thresholds are.

Hope that helps.

Comment #16 - Posted by: Nate at May 7, 2010 8:23 PM

I would to do this, but I simply do not have time in the morning before to do all of this. I can do it the next day but in the meantime does anyone have an idea of what MIGHT be tomorrow, so I can sub it for today? I realize that's like guessing the lottery but hey maybe someone is Rain Man and can find a pattern for me. TY

#10, PLers squat more than they deadlift because squat suits help the squat a lot more than deadlift gear helps the deadlift. Also yes, grip becomes a limiting factor at a certain point.

Crossfitting for over 2 years and this is my first post, it also has nothing to do with this WOD; I've just been too busy with school to keep up with the site so I'm always a couple day's behind the WOD.

I have an erg question for any hardcore rowers out in the world wide web -I just got one two weeks ago, to say that I'm in love is an understatement. I weigh 104 kg and can maintain 1:58 500m pace on the 7k with a damper setting of 7 and roughly a 1:54 500m pace on the 5k with a damper setting of 8 -trying to build my way up to the 10k. My question: what is a good damper setting for someone my size and ability for a long row such as the 10k, and a shorter row such as the 5k?

Any tips or advice would help. Thanks

#56 dave_d: have you had any injuries to your left knee? I had the same strain a month ago, but I've had two surgeries and now have osteo-arthritis in my knee that will flair-up. My Top patellar tendon pain was from the arthritic inflamation pinching some tissues against a bone spur on the superior edge of my patella. Rest and Ice is best.

I have a question about the shoulder press. Is it done using the legs for momentum as doing one of the Olympic moves or more just a "fixed" shoulder press? Also, when going as heavy as you can, are we allowed to wear a belt for the squats and deadlifts? Maybe the question I should ask, is are they allowed in competitions? Sorry if this has already been covered before.

I lied, I have one more question. When I competed in powerlifting a legal squat had to break parellel. On most of the videos I have watched so far, crossfitters go crazy low. Does this put more pressure on knees and is it safe to go that deep? I am 44 and just don't want to get hurt. Thanks again for your imput.

Today I deviated from main site programing in order to do an annual event, the Indianapolis Mini a half marathon (13.1 mi.) Last year i trained for this with a substantial amount of running for many long hours and sore feet. It was not uncommon for me to run 30 miles a week.

Last year i did the race in 2:06. This year I stuck with main site programing and added about 5 or 6 miles of running a week. Time today was 2:01.
I am in better shape and my capacities are throught the roof. This SH-T works.

Today:

CFT = 370kg (814#)

Still chasing that 1000, I wanted to hit over 800 for the first time today and I did, I could have squated more if I wasn't so ambitious and I should've been more ambitious on the shoulder press so I know next time I will press at least 65 or 70 and my squat today should've been 145. Deadlift felt really good though.

Last day of easing into crossfit today... Next week CFE comes into the mix.

BW still at 88.8kg which is same as last CFT.

After changing from a basic 2-3 day a week weighttraining program to about 4 months of CF my total was 860.

Past 6 weeks added a mini version of the Westside methods to the mainsite WOD and I CF totaled 905 today. I also maxed then bench for a 1010 total. Feels like I have a good blend going.

Sqt 350
Press 170
Dead 385
Bench 275

I feel consistency of working out, intensity and the variety have been most helpful in my progress. Thanks.

Not great numbers, just glad to do a wod again,
been loaded with the cold and just not up to training at the gym.

Spent most of my time tying to figure out the wrist wraps during the D/L.

I have been doing crossfit for about 3 1/2 months and the first one of these didn't go well.

I am a little nervous about maxing out but I tried today:

BS: 245 - could have done a few reps but did not want to push it.
SP: 125 - this seemed to be a true max as I just got barely got it up.
DL: 245 - prob. have done more but never deadlifted so much weight and am still afraid of badly tweaking my lower back.

Modified this on account of being out of the loop the past couple of weeks.

Back Squat (3 reps ea)- 185-225-275x5
Press (3 reps ea)- 45-95-135x5
Deadlift (3 reps ea)- 225-275-325x5

Pretty well spent after this.

I just stared doing cross fit last week (I was doing a normal weight training/cardio routine) I was pretty impressed with myself. . . Then I started looking at everyone else. . . JEEZ there are some beastly people doing this! At least I know where I stand. And I saw this asked earlier on. . . Most EVERYONES deadlift is heavier than their squat or they're weights are obly slightly off. . .

Make up date: 14 May 10: coming off of hamstring strain:
275/135/325 (365 fail- let it go as I felt the back rounding and hamstring starting to strain again) (735). Odd feeling, 325 felt freaking easy: as in, I felt like I could have done it in an unbroken set of 5 reps. It pays to watch the 2009 Games before doing it to put it into perspective, especially after watching Cyndi Frieling dominate 375. Shoulder presses are still the weak link.
