I never thought I'd be on par with someone that strong...doing 85 and failing 95 is what I think I'll get.

Comment #6 - Posted by: Matthew 23/6'2.5"/208 at May 4, 2010 5:32 PM

Don't say you on par until you complete it! Its a long set before you put the dumbbells down if you picked an appropriately load. Goodluck and happy 5th of May.

if I don't have any dumbbells do I just use a barbell and what weights would I sub with?

Comment #15 - Posted by: Alex Straus at May 4, 2010 6:57 PM

I am assuming that the dumbbells are not to be put down during each round!?

Comment #16 - Posted by: CD at May 4, 2010 7:13 PM

Are the push presses a full clean/press for each rep? Or a push from the shoulder?

Comment #17 - Posted by: Shane at May 4, 2010 7:21 PM

Never mind...I see the pattern. Deadlift (5) into cleans (5) into presses(5) into squats (5).

Comment #18 - Posted by: Shane at May 4, 2010 7:24 PM

So, are we supposed to do each round without putting down the dumbbells, and if we do we should consider it a failure? This is apparently what Rob Orlando was doing.

Comment #19 - Posted by: Kyle at May 4, 2010 7:24 PM

How do you think I could add weight onto an existing dumbbell to make it heavier? I.E. I want to make a 35# DB 40#'s.....any ideas? haha maybe I could tie a 5# DB to it with rope lol?

Comment #20 - Posted by: Ryan Warkentin at May 4, 2010 7:25 PM

Nice work Robb! You will have to get that 95lb round, it was yours!

I like this strength endurance stuff!

Comment #21 - Posted by: ian at May 4, 2010 7:54 PM

#16 CD and #19 Kyle

I would say that the idea is to not set the DBs down until the round is over. So 5 reps for each of the 4 movements and then the DBs can be let go. If we were allowed to set the DBs down, say after each movement, that would promote longer rest periods and much less of a challenge. The fatigue factor will increase as the movements are done continuously and such the last movement(s) is going to be more difficult and you will get more out the workout. Also, if the workout allowed for the DBs to be set down at any time, I would bet that Rob O. would have easily handled the 95lb DBs had he had set them down for a rest throughout the round.

This workout is in many ways similar to that barbell Bear Complex which as I recall was a good one.

Touch the floor on the deadlifts?

Comment #27 - Posted by: mark 27/m/200/73.5" at May 4, 2010 8:44 PM

Rob Orlando is really swinging the weight in his DB hang cleans.

There are plenty of videos where he cleans the weight and keeps the barbell closer to his body and more vertical. Does this happen with dumbbells because the weight cannot rotate around the handle (like on an OL bar)?? If he was doing that with a barbell it would be a terribly inefficient clean. But maybe you have to? Any thoughts?

Comment #28 - Posted by: Matt_in_Oz at May 4, 2010 8:47 PM

love how he does the WOD in running shoes. just proves you dont need fancy lifting shoes to put out.

Comment #29 - Posted by: adam at May 4, 2010 8:49 PM

Okay so understand the idea of not putting the weights down, but my issue is I am able to lift high weights for deadlift, but will be unable to press that weight. Should I then sacrifice lifting heavy on the deadlift and just do the workout with what I can press, or switch out weights after the deadlift?

Comment #30 - Posted by: Judy f/34/5'4"/142 at May 4, 2010 8:53 PM

it's the same weight for each cycle. choose a weight you can press fairly easily. remember, instructions say to increase the weight each set. so, don't get too crazy.

Comment #31 - Posted by: john poulos at May 4, 2010 9:10 PM

What weight is on the bar for the f. squat in the picture? I love front squats more than back squats, but I'm still pretty weak at them.

Comment #32 - Posted by: Adam from Japan at May 4, 2010 9:21 PM

I dont have Heavy enough DB for this workout. Can I use a Barbell with like double weight I would use for DB or what is a good sub for this?

the video of the workout on Sunday is very interesting. Hobart is the only one with a second pull during the snatch. Eric Magee and Dave Lipson pull once from the ground and that bar travels at a relatively constant speed till it is overhead. With Hobart there is clearly a second pull when that bar reaches his pockets.

My plan was to start light - I haven't done a lot of these exercises with dumbbell's before, and wanted to make sure my form was good, especially on the hang cleans. 20 was good, enough weight that I wasn't "bouncing," but light enough to correct form. My plan of ending at 35-40 was shot by the end of round 2; it's a lot harder (for me) to control separate weights for the hang cleans, than with a bar. Definitely felt it in the shoulders and legs after yesterday's workout, though - still need practice rotating my hips through while I'm doing cleans. (staggers off, chanting "fast elbows")

any thoughts on getting a narrower stance during dumbell cleans? I notice rob's knees have to collapse in just like mine when dipping with dumbells. It doesn't exactly feel like a good idea. Any solutions? Narrower stance? Dip less?
I hate db cleans for this reason.

Hey Guys,

The victims of the Nashville flooding are in need of your help. If you can donate even just $1 to the Red Cross or any charity of your choosing that is helping the victims, it would be greatly appreciated. While many of us were extremely lucky, there are so many that are without basic essentials, and worse yet, their home. Thank you for any help you can offer.

Almost failed out on the push presses with the 50#s. I still have lingering knee pain from the patellar tendonitis, which seems to manifest itself in a complete lack of confidence in my legs. the deadlifts and squats were pretty easy, the power cleans I could mostly do full-bodywise, but the push presses were just terrible. I got the slight squat/dip motion, but could not translate that into bar motion... not as noticeable at the early weights, but absolutely terrible on the 50#s. Managed to keep from putting the dumbbells all the way down (proud of that in itself!), and powered through, but that was a wake-up call in terms of my knees and legs...and not a happy one!

PP was with right arm only. Could have gone to 45# but shoulder hurt to clean real heavy. Will try that later when it heals.

a random question but i noticed crossfitters wearing some sort of tape either around their shoulders or lower back especially during the games....what kind of tape is that they're wearing? is it to prevent previous injuries to that body part? the tape is mainly black from what i can remember

Five rounds of:
5 Dumbbell deadlifts
5 Dumbbell hang cleans
5 Dumbbell push presses
5 Dumbbell squats

1.30lbs
2.35lbs
3.40lbs
4.55lbs
5.65lbs F

we only have 40lbs DB's then on the 55lbs I had onehand curlbars with 25lbs plates on them. it was real clanky and awkward. I got brady to video the train wreck and he will post the last attempt. I was having trouble with the SP lock out and I had to position the weights on either side of my shoulder, real awkward. I dropped the bar with 2 reps to go on SP and Brady made me finish it anyway, I'm glad he did.
I should have gone with the bar like you said Ernie, but I had to try and see how bad it was going to be.

Being a special kind of idiot I failed to notice the note about it being a progression and started off at the max available of 40#. No problem w. dead lifts of course but presses shut me down and had to move to 35# for the rest of rnd 1 and rnd 2. For my safety and that of others, dropped down further to 30#s for remainder. Ah well, live and learn.

Buy in: row, six rounds of 300 hard, 200 easy, rotating among 5k pace (1:45), 2k pace (1:38), and 1k pace (1:33).

Cash out: various pec rehab activities, pull ups are now pain free, push ups less so, bench press still hurts so I kept it light but got some reps in at 135. Getting there.

At the risk of getting a bunch of "just shut up and do the WOD" responses, I have questions about why we would do this workout with dumbbells. It seems to me, having done plenty of KB cleans, snatches and presses, that this WOD would be much, much more effective with kettlebells. Because the KBs can rotate in your grip, they do a much better job of simulating the clean. With a dumbbell, the hang clean becomes basically a swinging curl (which is exactly what happens in the Rob Orlando video). Maybe it's just me, but I feel that a swinging curl is not very applicable to anything else, especially compared to a KB clean. Plus, you can use KBs for every other lift in this WOD as well.

The only counterargument I can think of is that the kettlebells come in larger increments, thus limiting how much you can adjust the weight between sets. But I've seen DB cleans come up so much in WODs before, and I've never understood why they are used in favor of KBs.

Forearms were dead after this. Push presses were clearly my limiting factor today - going overhead with dumbbells is a weakness I need to work on.

70 felt doable at the start, but just could not control the weights to lock them out overhead. 65 did not feel much easier - however if my forearms had been fresher, I think I could have adjusted the dumbbells better. After failing in round 5, I picked the dumbbells back up, and finished out the round with 2 more push presses and the squats. Felt it was the least I could do as I was disappointed to not get 65.

Remember that it is functional fitness, constantly varied. Though a kettlebell "cleans" easier than dumbells, not everything you have to lift in life is going to rotate easily in your grip.
Also, people probably have easier access to dumbells rather than kettlebells.

@QRM/24:

I would argue that these DB lifts are less functional, less constantly varied and easier.

Less functional - I believe a "clean" is more functional than a "swinging curl."

Less constantly varied - as I said, DB cleans appear regularly here, whereas KB cleans rarely, if ever appear.

Easier - Although the KB allows us to replicate the clean action, it is significantly more difficult to handle from a balance perspective (especially on the push press). The dumbbells are only "harder" in the sense that they tend to grind against your shoulder on the squats and the cleans, especially if they are not rubber-coated.

I'm not trashing the WOD, but in my opinion it would be much improved with a kettlebell. If someone from HQ has a definitive reason why we use DB's, I'd be interested to hear it. It could just be the accessibility issue.

About 4 min rest between rounds.

Warm Up: Greg A's warm Up + 5 bar Muscle Ups

WOD: Dumb Bell Max Exertion F_ck!

45-50-55-60-65f-65

Cool Down: Gymnastics, one minute hand stand hold, skin the cat, front lever holds, Bar Muscle Up.

Comments: Yup I failed on the dum bell hang cleans at 65lbs. I wanted to get it so I rested again and got through it. Geez that was rough!

Too easy, but only because I need bigger db's. I will have to attempt this when I have access to 60 or 65 lb db's, I think I would fail somewhere in there!

After being sick for 13 days, I returned to the gym today. It felt great.

Using 45lb dumbbells completed 5 rounds of: 5 deadlifts; 5 cleans; 5 push presses; 5 squats; 2 minutes of rest.

Also completed 1 mile run at 10:57 minutes. Slow but happy to be at it again.

This workout made me realize that I have to swallow my pride and get my form better. I sucked ass at this workout. :-)

Round 1-35lb. kettlebell :-)
Round 2-50lbs. dumbbell :-)
Round 3-60lbs. dumbbell :-( broken squat
Round 4-70lbs. dumbbell :-( broken squat; my 7 month-old son began to wail; he wanted his daddy
Round 5-80lbs. was WAY TOO MUCH!!

Extra-50lbs. dumbbell

I need some stretching techniques that will allow my hips and calves more flexibility. I need some tips on DB squats, DB hang cleans, and DB push press. Any help e-mail me at smalls_1984@yahoo.com

As Rx'd (unbroken sets)

35#, 40#, 45#, 55#, 65#

Almost dropped a 65 on a clean but was able to recover

Not sure if there is a standard for gripping/holding DBs, so I just held 'em however I could best manage to hang on - usually palms facing in on cleans and squats.

Relocated to the back of the gym so I could lift barefoot. Just walking back&forth w/ the DBs after each set was half a workout in itself.

I'm having a hard time keeping my weight on my heels on cleans and front squats. Need better shoes. Does anyone here use indoor soccer shoes for weight lifting? I figured they would be better than cross-trainers since they have a relatively flat base.

decided before the workout that I would be impressed with myself if I could make 35's, was going to do hang power cleans, but got talked into (very easily) doing the workout right

15-20-25-30-35-40!
the 15's were a joke, so after I got the 35 I decided to do more, really didn't think I was going to get it, but I did!! Not only that, but I almost dropped the weight after the first push press, but I caught it around my knee, then cleaned them back up and finished!

Once I did that I was going to do 45's to see how far I would get (not sure I could even clean them) but then realized that I only had one 45# weight, so I stopped.

Also did the 5k this morning, results there

Didn't realize that you're not allowed to set down the weights between sets until afterwards when I checked out the comments board (I only sat them down between cleans and presses). Using these same weights without setting them down would be a good challenge for me next time.
