Comment #5 - Posted by: Ryan Warkentin at April 27, 2010 5:19 PM

If CF allows knee wraps and weight belts, I'm going to go much higher on this WOD.

Comment #9 - Posted by: rob orlando at April 27, 2010 5:29 PM

Neil, you're a stud brother. Nice work.

I knew when I met you at our Level 1 last year that you were a real competitor. Best of luck at the Regionals and the Games!

Now about that hair...

:-)

Comment #12 - Posted by: Luc at April 27, 2010 5:48 PM

Wow, those are some solid front squats. One word...Strong.

Comment #13 - Posted by: Danny at April 27, 2010 5:49 PM

I'm a newbie, sorry! I don't understand the 3-3-3-3-3 business... so 5 reps of 3 and are you supposed to increase the weight each time? Is this not for time?

Thanks!

Comment #14 - Posted by: Bonnie at April 27, 2010 5:50 PM

Oops, sorry, I meant 5 SETS of 3 reps...

Comment #15 - Posted by: Bonnie at April 27, 2010 5:51 PM

Bonnie, the WOD is 5 sets of 3 reps each of Front Squats. Please see the related video of Dave Lipson for a visual guide.

Comment #16 - Posted by: Asim at April 27, 2010 5:59 PM

I just watched it. Very helpful for form. I am wondering, though, about the weight. Is there a RX percentage increase for each set?

Comment #17 - Posted by: Bonnie at April 27, 2010 6:01 PM

@Bonnie:

There's no specific rx'd percentage, but use your (estimated probably) back squat/normal squat max as a guide. If you've never done front squats before, go maybe 50-60% of your back squat max, focusing on correct form (depth, back straightness, elbow angle, etc). Then move the weight up if/as you feel comfortable.

It's all about you knowing yourself and your abilities. Keep your core tight, and you'll do great. Good luck!

Comment #18 - Posted by: DenverDawg at April 27, 2010 6:08 PM

@Bonnie:

Forgot to mention this: rest 2-3 or 3-5 mins between each set as a rule of thumb. Rest enough to recover but not enough to cool off. This isn't for time, it's for max weight/load so...no rush.

Comment #19 - Posted by: DenverDawg at April 27, 2010 6:09 PM

Dave, that was amazing.

Comment #20 - Posted by: ronda rockett at April 27, 2010 6:20 PM

Comment #22 - Posted by: Chris S at April 27, 2010 6:35 PM

Awesome.

Watching that weight drop and the plates not being bumper ... as bad as it COULD have been, it still registered in my head as purely freakin' awesome.

Comment #23 - Posted by: Will Shen at April 27, 2010 6:38 PM

BTW, I love the new format of showing some of CF's top athletes blasting through the WODs. Hope to see this continue.

Comment #25 - Posted by: Frank DiMeo at April 27, 2010 7:02 PM

hey all. i'm a crossfitter in PA and was wondering if anyone knows of a site, or if someone create one, that posts local/regional tournaments...other than the MAIN games quals. those of you whom compete know what i mean. I didnt qualify for Regionals but would always invite the competition in the area. just looking to keep my competitive edge..let me know. thanks

Dave, nice work. I wish that was my back squat.

Comment #31 - Posted by: Pat Sherwood at April 27, 2010 8:05 PM

Wow Dave you are at the caveman status I wish to achieve one day.

I am debating doing heavy front squats as I have been battling quadricep tendonitis/tendonosis for the past 5 weeks and am slowly starting to be able to do WODs with some intensity after many weeks of ice and stretching. Wish I could have K-Starr as my personal consultant.

Comment #32 - Posted by: iPood at April 27, 2010 8:16 PM

Thank you for the support and encouraging remarks. I thought it would be good to dedicate a strong effort to Amanda. She was an amazingly special girl who loved CrossFit.

Comment #33 - Posted by: Dave Lipson at April 27, 2010 8:16 PM

Every time I go to the gym to do Front Squats, I end up spending most of my time watching the other guys workout.

I'm not real sure why that is.

Comment #34 - Posted by: Eric Murillo at April 27, 2010 8:18 PM

Wow. Very impressive. Dave is def the real deal.

Comment #35 - Posted by: Steve Liberati at April 27, 2010 8:27 PM

Thoughts on Crossfit Games scoring....

What if:

The best score in an event gets a "100%" and everyone below gets a relative percentage score.

ie: top lift is 300# = 100%
next best is 280# = 93.33%
last place is 150# = 50%

same thing for all events.

Issues this addresses:

No advantage to sandbagging; if you can outlift the next closest by 50# and increase your lead vs. only besting by 1# and getting the same score

Takes any differential away from previous days having more competitors, thereby skewing the scoring.

Automatically weights events where everyone is relatively close.
For example: Athlete 1 and 2: Day one is a run where the difference is 10 seconds in a 15 minute event between #1 who is 1st and # 2 who is 10th (virtually but not quite the same level of performance) but a 10 point difference.

Day 2 is a 15 minute Metcom #2 is 1st and # 1 is 2nd but the spread is by 5 minutes, currently there is a 1 point score difference, yet the performance difference is huge.

Any thoughts...or not...just an idea

Comment #37 - Posted by: waderpro at April 27, 2010 8:43 PM

Where's Mikko?

Outstanding lifting Dave.

I'm loving seeing the videos of firebreathers performing the daily WOD in advance. It's inspirational and informative but....where's the champ?

Can we send Sevan or somebody over to Finland to see the Cyborg doing some main site WODs?

Even if he's not doing WODs, surely we can get some footage of him running through knee deep snow with logs on his back to Rocky theme music or something.

we need to se the Champ!

great WOD. Also I would like to give everyone a heads up on my new box located in the beautiful Potrero Hill district in San Francisco. I called is CrossFit 415 after the area code of S.F. and as a native 415 comes with many nice memories. If your every in S.F you have an open invitation to come in for a WOD. If you live in S.F or know anyone in S.F, come in and spread the word. It's been a long road but well worth it. Still alot of work to do on the gym and website, wish me luck. I love this community and only good has come from it. thx for your time.

#39, I don't have a place in my globo gym to set up my rings high enough to do muscle ups, so I am forced to do bar muscle up on the top of the squat rack. The thing that seems to have helped me the most it practicing clapping pullups. Since the bar is fixed and you can't "rip through" like you can with rings, you really have to launch yourself up over the bar to get past the break point. Try some pullups, and at the top pull as hard as you can to get enough air to let go, clap and return your hands to the bar. I found this to be a good progression for bar MUs.

Very impressive front squatting by Dave. The form was so good, I'm going to watch this again right before the workout. Loved the way he set up to the bar, no apprehension, he just attacked it.

On last week's clean/burpee WOD, our trainer yelled out "Dave Lipson is done now." I think that was when I was halfway through round 2 of the 5, with only 95 lbs to boot. Dave is truly a monster.

Sprained my ankle (grade 2) a week ago, and I was wondering if anyone knew how long the rehab takes? There is still some swelling and bruising all the way to my toes but my range of motion is getting pretty good. It also does not hurt to walk all day on it. Would it be OK to get back into it once the swelling/brusing is gone? Any ideas would be greatly appreciated.

Subbed BS for FS, on a smith machine:

255 x 3
265 x 2,F

body weight x 5

I really need a coach for the FS. If my wrists aren't in severe pain (with only 45 lbs) than my back is in severe pain. I can't seem to get my elbows up unless my arms are angled a lot. I feel out of proportion for this lift. I need help badly. Instead I will just stick to BS until then.

People with pain in the rack position:

1) Your wrists should not be in pain, they should not be taking any of the load. The bar sits on a shelf on your front deltoid (shoulder) muscles. The bar should be against your throat but not completley choking you. It should not be resting on bone.

2) If you have flexibility issues, 99% chance it's in your shoulders, not your wrists or triceps. Stretch/warm-up your shoulders really well with dislocates, scap push-ups, wall-slides etc. Do not grip the bar with your fingers, "babysit" the bar with the tips of a few fingers only (watch Dave in the video). DRIVE your elbows up as high as possible.

3) Sit straight down in a front squat. Do not sit back. Your knees WILL travel past your toes, this is fine because your weight will be staying on your heels (so there is no loading on your knees). If you sit back, your torso must incline forward, which will put the load on your wrists or make you lose the barbell.

I had a lot of fun with this one: 135x3, 225x1, 185x3, 205x3, 223x3, 245x did my best and 135x8. I then did some skill work while snatching. I also found a weighted vest in my gym and had some fun :)

I am wondering if I could have done higher weight, I just didn't want to pull something and look stupid in front of everyone... ah, pride.

This is my 5th WOD (total and in a row), and I've gained 7 pounds! Is that normal? or healthy? Did anyone else gain a lot when they started Crossfit? I don't feel or look "fatter."

Great strength on the front squats! I do have to be a little picky on the form; however, as your knees were being put in a compromised position and I could see your body weight coming onto your toes. Always keep weight on the heels and sit the hips back. I know it is difficult with a front squat, but that is what makes the movement so special.

Sub'd the WOD. Worked out at an Average Joe's that is too bland to have a squat rack. Had to sub WOD on a Smith machine--horrible period. Each set 3 reps and compensated for the 15# advantage.

1 front 225. bad ROM. had to shift to back squats.
2 back 385
3 back 385

How exactly does one sit back with the hips in a front squat without inclining their torso and losing the barbell forward? The hips must be as close to midline as possible to allow for an erect torso (same as the snatch). You want to sit down.

Yes, the weight stays on your heels, but in a max effort front squat/clean, some weight might get on the mid foot. If weight gets truly on the toes the lift will be lost.

Previous powerlifter with a good back squat, over 650 lbs, so I thought I would be able to push some good weight.....big surprise. Crossfitting now for 6 weeks and this movement really stresses the wrists. Hopefully next time I will see increase weight. I also didn't really feel the weight sitting on my chest and felt like I held it in the palm of my hands. Not sure if that is short arms or bad form.

These things seriously perturb my wrists - legs are definitely not the issue.

Did Cindy as well to atone for my crappy WoD performance - 24 rounds, then rock climbing.

My grip on the bar still sucks with these...my wrists just dont bend back like that so I end up resting the bar across my shoulders/upper chest and holding it up across my palms

255 felt okay, but didn't want to push it with the knee this close to the triathlon (Sunday).

Followed this up with a short swim (first time in the pool!), about 600m in total, but with lots of breaks. Mostly just getting used to the goggles, practicing form, trying to find a stroke rate that is sustainable. Threw in a couple of sprints, just to see how they felt.

Last WOD for me in April...#72 of 200 as rx'd in 2010 so far.

The last two sets saw my form start to suffer. Especially on the last one, I noticed I was really pulling forward, my elbows weren't up as high and I'm guessing that my back was rounding slightly.
Also practiced some HSPU using a TRX band to stabilize my feet overhead.

7th workout back! (Did this one on TH 4/29/10)

Front squat 3-3-3-3-3 reps

Post loads to comments.

I took yesterday off because I had a Olympic lifting session today but the teacher got busy and rescheduled me for tomorrow so oh well...

At the beginning I practiced on trying to get underneath the bar in the cleans. I started to get the hang of it and got a 155# hang squat clean! It's alot more easier using your legs and trying to get underneath the bar with no arming instead of power cleaning it all the time and using your arms...

anyways, with the front squats... (wasn't really my day for front squats but oh well)

185/205/225/205/205

I also have been noticing that I've been getting good at front levers even though I never practice them. My back is still an issue. I've been getting better at the wall crawls though and my leg flexibility is improving. I just gotta keep on at it...

"PROPS TO THA FRAT!!!"
