Newb question: for longer high rep WODs like this is it better to take as much rest as needed to finish the 50 reps?? or should I have a max rest time and if I can't do another rep move on to the next exercise?? been CF'ing for a month or so now and havin lots of fun with it...thanks in advance

#17 Jason asked:
for longer high rep WODs like this is it better to take as much rest as needed to finish the 50 reps?? or should I have a max rest time and if I can't do another rep move on to the next exercise??

Well, the intent for the WOD is: Start the clock. Do all 500 reps in order, resting only as necessary. Stop the clock. Record your time. Try to beat it next time.

But regarding taking breaks, I think many of the hackers here, like me for instance, have to take breaks on several of the exercises. Take the KTE's - because of a combo of stomach muscles and grip strength, I can't come close to 50 straight. I do 20, rest 5-8 seconds, do 8, rest agin fer a couple, then 7, rest, 6, rest, 5, rest, then the last 4. Also have to take breaks for wall ball and burpees. Just try and remember that the clock is ticking, so just rest long enough to bang another couple of reps out.

If you are just getting going, you might try scaling it to 40 reps of each for a total of 400, see how it goes, and then modify next time the WOD comes up. For instance, my wife did 30 of each the first time she tried it.

HTH, Dave T.

Comment #37 - Posted by: Mike/31/205/6'1'' at April 13, 2010 9:14 PM

Does anyone else have standard overtraining symptoms that they get? I should probably say overreaching, as it goes away in 3-5 days. If I do too much over a few days and can't find the right sleep and glutamine to counter I usually wake up with a nasty sore throat and stuffed ears/nose. It feels like strep or a sinus infection but no fever and the doc never finds anything. The problem is that I can never really spot any warning signs. It just seems to crash in, usually after a rough rugby weekend, but in this case it was just after being active and outside for too many days in a row I guess.

This is the 3rd time in the last 6 months and each one I can attribute to overindulgence in athletic endeavors.

Does anyone have similar overreaching or overtraining issues? If so, have you found any foods or habits that helped prevent them? Other than the obvious "just take a day off when you feel it coming" which would work if I could "feel" it coming. It's usually a wake up sick thing. Obviously I'm gonna miss some sleep here and there, but I find it hard to believe that that alone could set me off.

Ever since I started CrossFit, muscular girls like in today's pic are getting more and more attractive to me. That girl's got a hot bod!!

#13 JLG - As hard as it is for us fitness freaks not to train, try taking a full week off, do nothing at all. Eat a bag of potato chips, watch TV, and drink a ton of beer. You'll be amazed at how motivating feeling fat and out of shape will be for you!!

But if you can't stomach that idea, then try something different for exercise other than CrossFit. Try playing pickup basketball at the park, swimming, yoga, or good ol' Globo Gym 3 sets of 10 on the incline peck deck machine, haha. That might be refreshing enough to miss CrossFit and get your mind back on track. Hope that helps!

THE SAME THING THAT I PUT BACK IN 08 NOV 09,

The Famous Filthy Fifty! Nice! one of my favorite workouts since i started crossfit! sweet!

I am confident that i will beat my PR, the more I do this WODs the better I get overall phisically, this one will be the perfect example along with all the Girls Benchmark WODs,

Any TIPS on how to get a faster time?

I am pacing my self and if i rest it will be less than a 5 second rest and attacking the WOD again till i finish.

BRING IT COACH. 3,2,1. GO!

DB for kettlebell
Good mornings with 45lbs for back extensions
Thrusters with 45 lbs for Wall Ball shots
Knees to Chest jumps for DU'

47:43. This workout was a beast, I don't see how people can do all of this in sub 20 minutes....

Comment #48 - Posted by: emiller at April 14, 2010 12:00 AM

Chris, #39 at 9:19 pm,
not overtraining, what you're experiencing is from your immune system being crushed by the workout. The solution is simple: immediate (within 10-15 minutes of finishing) post-workout nutrition, consisting of whey protein, maltodextrin (fastest acting sugar, serves to stimulate insulin response, restore glycogen stores, and acts to facilitate use of BCAA from protein, and...) L-glutamine, which supports your immune system.

I had the same problem for a long time. Post-workout shakes fixed it.

They also make a noticeable difference in your next workout performance.

I do the "filthy" once a week even when it's not prescribed, it's my favorite. Starting last week I changed the 50 to 60, increased the weight to 65# on the push press and added an 11th exercise at the end, 95# overhead squats. I did this one yesterday (time 68 mins.) so I'll do something else today.

Videos of the daily wods are nice, but Laurie's video not being rxed just add to the usual confusion of what is the rx version for women for this wod, as well as for the other benchmarks - very puzzling to me why an official rx women's version of the daily wod could not be posted, the way it is done for instance at Crossfit competitions, where of course there is always an official scaling for women.

Topped out at 21 burpees and finished the workout there. I had somewhere to be, otherwise this workout may have taken me 45 minutes and I would have finished. Anyhow, this is my first filthy fifty and I am somewhere between disappointed and indifferent about my time and failure to finish it. Oh well, I'll do better next time:

My first sub 30 minute Filthy Fifty! Only substitiute was a 15# wall ball, as that is the heaviest our gym has. All the rest as Rx'ed. Previous best was 33:50 with the same sub.

Tried a new strategy this time. Took more frequent breaks, but very short ones. Didn't push it right to failure. Seemed to work better.

50 Walking Lunge steps
50 Knees to above elbows (tried swinging like the video, but no luck. Many reps knees to wrists with no swing)

tuck jumps instead of 200 single unders

wasdoing great until I met the burpees, which pretty much finished me off (took like 9 mins!)

Did DB Swing instead of KB Swing.

Time was 24:03 (PR) ALMOST 7 MINUTE PR. THE Burpees and the Wall balls got me, Took me about 6 minutes to complete those burpees, those burpees took the longest that i have ever seen in my life. usually i would go for 50 burpees in less than 3 minutes, NOT TODAY..

Plan on visiting a CF Affiliate in St. Pete, FLA.

24" box jumps
1 pood KB
knee "kissing" ground walking lunges
kipping K2E
45# bar push press
GHD back extensions
20# ball for the first 17 reps of wall ball until a 14# ball was free. I bet those 17 reps at 20# took me at least a minute if not more...shoulders were spent and I was getting 2 or 3 in a row before breaking!

Would it be more effective if I scale down the weights/reps (so do only 25 double-unders or do the push press with 25 lbs) or should I go for the prescribed weights until I hit 50 or exhaustion?

The males would use 25# DB thursters instead of wall balls, so I would just use whatever you're comfortable with. I usually grab the 20s. (or just the 45 lb. barbell)

i did all 50 wallballs unbroken and it murdered me for the burpees. definitely not a good idea. the only things that weren't unbroken were k2e's (which i probably coulda gone a little faster on), burpees, and double unders. mark my words: sub 15 next time!

Subs:
35# DB swing for KB swing

Felt like I had an awesome time until I hit the k2e's. Then felt I had a decent time until the burpees absolutely killed me.

Sure someone has mentioned it but could not find it.

Vid of the wod is off shows same split time of 11:50 for two exercises.

Sure overall times is right and not trying to take any thing away from form effort or result. I was just looking at splits to try and get a comparision of how the wod flowed.

44yom 185lbs

Filthy Fifties with my buddy Andrew. He misunderstood how to do it, so he did it split up in two sets of 25reps. So he did it in about 42min.

Myself: I did regular Kipping PU, used a 20kg KB and used 8kg med ball (heaviest they had).

My time: 35:57.

Burpees always kick my ass. One of the swivel handle on my jump rope broke halfway thru my DU's. I had to borrow someone else's. Never a dull moment...

I felt like I hit the wall hard on burpees. That is where I am going to have to find that extra minute and ten seconds to get under 20 minutes. This was a big PR for me though since I have been hanging around the 23 minute mark for about a year and a half now. Glad to see some movement finally.

SUBs- DB swings 35lbs for kettle, Thrusters 45lbs for wall ball.
I fell apart at the end for sure. It took me 10 mins to complete the burpees and the DUs. My arms were fried and I could not get the rhythm going on the DUs. But I still managed to shave off 3 mins from my last time.

subs situps for kte, goodmornings for be, tuckjumps for du, 45lb thrusters for wall ball and used 30lb db for swings.

Same subs as always think good subs, but def faster than rxed.

I went straight from work to the gym. I have things to do today... no time for a break.

The basketball players wanted me off the court. Forget you man! This is the only place for me to play wall-ball.

40 # DB for KB Swings

Did knees to elbows at the end because I accidentally oversaw it while doing the WOD.

I hate to be rude but when a door to door salesman walks up to your garage gym while you're in a set of Burpees and just doesn't get it when you tell him "No thanks, I'm busy." You just have to be rude.

Sub'ed 19" box (all I have)
Db swings 37 #
Goodmornings 45#
Wallball 10' target- 15# ball (all I have)
Tuckjumps

rest as Rx'ed Kept good form even on burpees when yelling at salesman. (jump to touch 8' ceiling on each)

I had to change the order around, as DU takes too much technique for me to do last. Then I missed stuff and messed up the ordr even more. Felt OK until wall ball.

Did better lat tim by 5 min, but last time I used 8" box jump imstead of 16", and 8" jump again for DU. So I did it closer to rx this time.

Was a little disappointed to come in slower than last time, but I think I may have skipped one of the exercises last time (at least that's what I'm telling myself). Back extensions were a little awkward upstairs using the Swiss ball and the cable lat pull-down knee pads as my foot stop. I guess I'll take it considering my extended break for tendonitis.

used incline for knees to elbows;
push press 65 lbs 1st set, 33 lbs sets 2-3, 45 lbs rest;
5 kg wall-ball (heaviest available);
substituted 8" jump for double-unders;
had to take 3 or more breaks throughout

Comment #453 - Posted by: Slugger 6 at April 19, 2010 11:40 AM

attacked this today...
15:13 up to burpees-they took over 6 minutes to complete.
24:44 total
hammered out the last 25 double-unders straight.

the burpees simply took too long...

did back ext. over the back of my couch with feet being held down.

We just got our bikes out of storage, hope to ride a lot this summer. Also hope to get my wife to start x-fitting once she gets in the groove of the warmer weather.

Holy crap! What a huge improvement from my last Filthy 50 (35:30)!! The one in November was one of my first 10 Crossfit workouts ever, and the difference that about five months has made is incredible! Probably gained about 5 lbs of muscle and lost 10 lbs of fat since then. Thanks everyone who runs this awesome site and keeps this community strong.

CFWU-2. 12 pushups instead of PU 2nd. Shortcut-length of workout. Superman. Burgener.
29:38 w/DU - for first time.
Little too much space for jump on jumping PU. Feet barely touching floor.
Burpees still very tough & broken. Mostly sets of 5. Came up on toes instead of heels for many of the reps.

Box J were slower than last time, better standard this time. Jumping pullups were not correct, had to jump 12" to get to bar...last time 90s, this stime about 2 min slower, lost a lot there. Rest was similiar, lug nuts comming off during burpees, need to be better at those. All in all a pretty good effort, with better form or way too much... Oh well.

As Rx'd:

27:10

Improvement of 1:28 since last time (28:38), but still off of my PR by 2:30 (24:40). That was a long time ago.

A big factor is the Florida heat and humidity I think (86 degrees). Kind of felt like I was burning from the inside out. I need to learn to drink a lot more water before going out there. Not an excuse by any means, just noting for next time in hopes of a PR.

JPUs, KBSs, Lunges, and DUs were all unbroken. Probably half of my time was spent doing the damn wall balls (sets of 10) and burpees (painfully slow 1 by 1). If I can improve upon just those two movements I would destroy my times.

50 Back extensions (unbroken but slow) 2:00
50 Wall ball shots, 20 pound ball (25-15-10) 3:00
50 Burpees (21-15-9-5; short breaks, but very slow burpees) 4:00
50 Double unders (several misses; I was not in a good place here) 1:15

As rx'd, 20:12 (PR).

I was so close to sub-20. Really thought I had it, I was 12 minutes on the dot after back extensions. Maybe could have pushed harder through wall balls. I took burpees slow and methodical, and didn't rest much during the breaks; mostly I just wanted to start a different set of counting. I had hoped the 21-15-9 would take my mind off things, but I was in a world of hurt through most of this - dancing big time with Pukie. Was at 19:06 entering double-unders, but felt like ass and just couldn't string them together at first. I was on the ground for about 15 minutes after this one.
