Nice quote by Edmund Burke. Here is another good one:

"The best of men are men at best."

“The best of men are only men at their very best. Patriarchs, prophets, and apostles, – martyrs, fathers, reformers, puritans, – all are sinners, who need a Savior: holy, useful, honorable in their place – but sinners after all.”

#8 Chris: if you're a bigger, stronger guy (say with a 300+ C&J), the weight would not be that difficult to throw around that quickly so long as his grip would hold out on the HPCs.

For someone like Khalipa 6:13 is definitely feasible.

Chris (#8),

Unless it was a typo, why would Jason lie? I have met him several times. I was there when he finished first place at the 2008 CF games, and watched him come back from last place in 2009. I did not detect any deceit in this man, but a spirit of humility, honesty, and a desire to work hard.

There once was a man named Issac,
When he deadlifted he certainly didn't hold back.
He grunted and strained.
And his face looked quite pained
when he found he'd ripped his nutsac.

FUNDRAISER ANNOUNCEMENT!

I don't like to advert like this, but what better place than the CF community to rally some interest. Some students of mine and I are holding a fundraiser for the Livestrong Foundation, testicular cancer research and awareness. We just opened registration - $15 base registration and $20 if you want a T-shirt. We are also taking Donations. We've not designed this event to be local only; I think satellite events are definitely a possibility. If you have any questions drop me an email. We are also recruiting corporate sponsors and any ideas are certainly welcome. This is our first fundraiser event. Thanks for your consideration.

RE: WOD - did two today, so probably should rest, but this one looks like so much fun... the mental dilemma... >:-O

Yup I was wrong, 600lbs. Crazy.

Comment #26 - Posted by: Jay at April 7, 2010 6:51 PM

It's 600 pounds, 5 45# + 5# + 2.5# a side, plus 45# bar.

Comment #27 - Posted by: grambo at April 7, 2010 6:51 PM

Isn't there 6 45s each side or am I just tired from today's WoD? Wouldn't that make it 615?

Comment #28 - Posted by: Ty M. at April 7, 2010 6:56 PM

Nope...did my math wrong. There are 6 per side but still ends up being 600. I'm going to sleep. Time to recover.

do we find the posting of khalipa's time directly under the wod beneficial or does it create more of an elitist tone?

i guess i fall somewhere in the middle, i am just looking to see where other people stand on it. certainly, i would watch and enjoy a video of jason doing DT without giving it much of a second thought, but posting the time as it is seems different.

#29 cmugs asked:
i thought women's weight was .65xmens wt, thus 100lbs. anyone?

It's usually around 2/3rds + or - (66.67%)

135 men is 95 women; that's 70.4%
95 men is 65 (although I've seen 63 too) - 68.4%

So for today's:
70% of 155 = 108.5
66.67% = 103.3

Big Dawg Mantra
I know you...
I know you're bigger, faster and stronger than me.
I know your Fran time is lower, your 5k is quicker and your deadlift is heavier.
I know you have 1,000 views on YouTube.
I know you're a "WOD" warrior.

I know you, but you don't know me.

You don't know what's in my head, what's in my heart, what's in my soul.
You don't know that pain is my ally.
You don't know that sweat and blood are my training partners.
You don't know that I'm unbreakable.

I know you train in your temperature controlled gym with the tough sounding name while I'm training in garage exposed to the elements. In the heat and in the cold, in the humidity, rain and snow, I'm forging mental toughness. I'm tempering my resolve. I'm fueling my passion. I'm getting ready for the day that we meet.

I know your 1,000 YouTube views won't mean shit in front of 1,000 spectators. I know when the heat goes up I go big and you go home.

I know you don't know me...but you will. - Dave X

Today only Bachendra is available. Others are working, taking exams, Gautam is nursing a sore back. Then I realized that many of our young women were finished with exams, hanging around waiting for results (the system in India). Several had expressed interest in CF but were too intimidated. I called them down and 7 new Crossfitters showed up. Made a slow day into a great one. Also, got Ravi going, he was balking at the WOD.

Bachendra 15:30 50kg

Ravi 7:14 40kg

It's interesting to compare Jason's form on the push jerk from the 'DT' video to Boz's form on the push jerk in the video 'Freddy's Revenge'. Boz seems to be under the bar more with a straighter back, while Jason seems to be leaning back some. They both get the work done, moving large loads quickly, but their technique is a bit different. Any thoughts?

#45, Finnish Craig - Use a pomus stone in the shower on a daily basis. That will keep your callouses from getting too big, which is the cause of your tearing. For a couple of good posts on hand tears and callouses, check out these from CrossFit One World from a couple of months back.

10 pull ups after each set. Since I cannot do wt’d pull ups, kept it at 10 each set, held each pull up at the top for a couple seconds and then did negatives for about half (not all for danger of rhabdo).

Did not really go for time but it was a good little workout. Was feeling pretty tired anyhow so focused on strength/form.

First time doing this WOD. I love it, but it's pretty tough. 6:16 is an amazing time; it inspires me to work harder, knowing it's possible to do this WOD in under half the time I completed it. That means I should at least be able to do it in under 10 minutes eventually.

Adam from Japan--Jason is a lot bigger than Boz...so instead of having perfect form he can muscle more weight up without a problem. However, Boz has to have good form on every single rep--Chris Spealler talked to us about how good Boz's form is at the Cert I went to a couple of weeks ago.

and Joel C.: those shoes are from INOV8--look them up online or on zappos.com

#45 in the journal there is a video of Rip talking about grip and actually demonstrates a way to avoid the callus buildup before it happens. It helped me a lot. Basically, the problem is the way we grip the bar. Rather than putting the bar all the way into your thumb crease, set up your grip so that you are starting with the bar at the base of your fingers, that way you don't get the crease across the top of your palm and you don't get the calluses. If you're subscribed to the journal, look it up.

It was great having a pro's time to compare to. It was painful watching Khalipa's time come and go when I wasn't even half way through the WOD. It made me push like crazy for the last two rounds though. This was my second WOD ever back in July '09. Beat that tme by over 11 minutes!

Comment #97 - Posted by: MikBu at April 8, 2010 6:33 AM

I love that Khalipa doesn't short change range of motion at all. He leaves no doubt that every rep was full ROM...no room for naysayers in that regard. He HPC's 155 like I do the bar.

61 year old male. Got my first second & third muscle up yesterday. Many thanks to all the great people at Carolina Crossfit who coached and encouraged me. Also thanks to Jeff Tucker-I learned a lot at his gymnastics cert. Finally, thanks to Crossfit Headquarters- the info on the website was a great help.
Why should an old man work so hard for and care so much about a muscle up? Must be the kool aide. Crossfit works-even for old geezers.
Thanks to the entire crossfit community. You ARE AN INSPIRATION.

Khalipa, so beast.

You could game this just a bit better if you do and count a power clean set up for the push jerks. He did 4 extra power cleans, and maybe could have saved a few breaks by going (4/4/1+jerks) in the middle rounds.

That said, I'm just going to try to break 12 mins. My grip has been holding me back lately, this should help!!

I remember Dave Tate saying that shoulders should be over or behind the bar...

Don't try to use a smith machine for any of these three movements. Or for any movement period, really. Just use the dumbbells and that's a decent sub. You can do deadlifts, HPCs, and push jerks with DBs and it'll tax you just as bad as using a barbell.

BIG FAT DNF DID NOT FINISH!!!

I was on the cleans on the 4th set and on rep 6 I caught it low on my chest and heard a ''POP'' like when you pop your fingers but bigger and alot of pain. I crumpled from it, felt arround didn't know what I did. After a bit iI tried another rep and caught it good, but still feeling pain. Stood arround, (Brady had stopped the clock at this point)

I thought I would finish the workout anyway Biut I picked up the bar and soreness. Tried Bradys 115bar cleaned it easy but holding the bar in rack position the weight pressing down hurt.

After about 5 min later (when my elbow stopped hurting), I decided to finish so I'm only counting time for 4 rds.

RE: Comment #128 - Posted by: spyu

Spyu, my tip would be to work on catching the clean in a good 'front rack position' where weight of the barbell is supported across the front delts and your elbows are up high. You only need a couple of fingers under the bar at this point just to keep it in position so wrist flexibility becomes less of an issue. Also just using this technique will probably help your wrist/finger ROM over time...

Hope this helps :)

Did a lot of subbing on this one

Started out doing everything at 135...did that for 3 sets...4th set was 135 dls 115 hang cleans and 115 shoulder presses...5th set was 135 dls and 95 for hang cleans and presses

I think if I do this one again I might set up 3 bars...the dls were very easy the hang cleans were tough and I couldn't do that many presses at that weight

Khalipa? Did anybody notice he did 10 power cleans instead of 9 in rds 2-5. He did 9, rested, then did another to get the bar up for the presses. Why not do 8, then the 9th to get it up. He could've been sub 6.

First time doing all of these. Looked at videos and read some journal entries to get a good idea for form. I feel like my form for the deadlifts are off, i kept hitting my own knees with the bar. Started low because i wasnt sure of my tolerance.

Oh yeah and I played 1.5 hours of BBall so I only did 4 rounds.

Deadlifts: 115, 135, 145, 155
Hang Cleans: 65, 75, 85, 95
Push Jerk: 115, 135, 145, 155(2)

Failed on the last push round of push jerks. I had issues getting the bar up to that point. I guess once my hang cleans get better i can do better on the push jerks. I had to do power cleans to get the bar up that high.

“He was, mentally, the strongest person I have ever known,” said Jesse Huggins, Davis’ best friend since Little League. “There are things that in life are so difficult, no one else is willing to volunteer for. He would.”

One of those things was the 800 meter race in track, which is notorious for being tough and was Davis’ preferred event. Huggins recalled seeing Davis throw up after many races, because he had pushed himself so hard.

Thought you all would enjoy that bit, I like to read up on these heros when their WODs come up, found this in an article about Tim Davis. If that’s not representative of the CF attitude I don’t know what is. This guy was a bad mofo. I have to start doing this reading before the WOD, psyches me up.

Next time “DT” comes up you can bet your butt I’ll be thinking of you sir. Thank you for giving all so I can give some. Thank you also to your wife Meagan and son Timmy Junior, your sacrifice is not forgotten.

As rx'd, 12:33. Almost 20 minute PR!

Okay, before we go crazy here, much of this PR is due to: 1) a bar with good knurling, 2) bumper plates, 3) proper taping, and 4) use of hook grip. The latter might be the most important of all, as it allowed me to string together the cleans. Deadlifts went fine, unbroken. HPCs went pretty good, usually got through them in 2 sets, 3 sets in later rounds. Push jerks unbroken until round 3, then done in 2 sets.

Very happy with this - was shooting for under 15 - but my technique on push jerks needs work. Not consistent - I would have a good rep, then I would have a crappy one where I didn't get to full extension before using the arms or I wasn't aggressively getting under the bar. Wasted a lot of energy pressing out the last few inches on several reps.

Does anyone else find it entertaining when people approach you during a workout (globo people), and ask what you're training for? My answer: I'm training for life!

Even though that's a PR i'm still disappointed a bit. My grip limits me so much and starts failing at about round 3. It doesn't help when you're sweating heavily either i suppose, but that's just an excuse. Everything but the HPCs were unbroken.

The fact that Khalipa can bust this out in 6:16 is absolutely insane. Certainly something to hope for in the future if my grip ever kicks in.

CrossFit Warmup followed by WOD.

I had to sub 132 lbs for the cleans and jerks after the first round. Switching over is included in my time.

Great improvement from last time when I couldn't really handle the prescribed weight and performed a slow 1:00:38..

This time, I got it in 26:56 as Rx'd (not chipped)! I'm happy with over a 30 minute improvement.

FIRST WORKOUT AT THE NEW CROSSFIT FACILITY AT THE PD. Last time I did this in 15:31 with 135. This time I did uy in 13:21! In keto! Just goes to show what proper equipment can do to help. Normally do this with iron weights which can't be dropped. Awesome! Definitely do this as rx'd next time with proper equipment. Smoker
