#2 find someone who has some dumbbells (if you don't) borrow them and then do pull ups on a playground. That's what I do.

Sunday musings...

1) Escalator (Courtesy of "Lovely Daughter). Why is it that they put a closed sign in front of an escalator when it's not working? Doesn't seem to make much sense, does it? I mean, a broken escalator is just a staircase, isn't it?

Seems like instead of putting a "sorry for the inconvenience" sign and something blocking the way, there should be a "escalator out of order -- please take stairs" sign.

2) 800 M standard. Didn't I read once upon a time that Coach said that one version of an athletic standard would be an 800 m runner? The 800M run has become more of a sprint than a "middle-distance" run. More muscular, stronger athletes running on their toes for pretty much half a mile.

Not only that, but it seems as though many of our most famous benchmark workouts occur pretty much in the 800M time frame. Fran, Diane, Grace, all seem to be done by the best Crossfitters in pretty much the same amount of time they probably run 800M.

I'm not really sure why, but I was thinking about this during yesterday's running WOD.

3) Downhill flow. You know that expression, "stuff" flows downhill? I ran into that during the preparation for a speaking engagement in Hartford this past week. My travel arrangements were an absolute mess. So messy, in fact, that I probably should have just canceled the engagement. Without question, after became clear that I was going to have to cancel my office schedule, I should have canceled my trip.

Well, why didn't I? It turns out that the person who was going to take the hit for this planes, trains, and automobiles fiasco was the lowest person on the totem pole of the company for whom I was speaking. The local rep would have taken the fall, even though she had performed her duties as prescribed. "Stuff" flows downhill, and it was clear to me that the "stuff" was going to land all over her. it just didn't seem right, browned off as much as I was, that the only person who actually did her job in the process should be the only person who received any negative consequences for the screwup. I canceled my office and got on the plane.

It's really amazing how often we face situations just like this in all walks of life. The kitchen throws the waitress under the bus and sends out the wrong meal. The cab driver gets stuck behind a huge accident on the way to the most important meeting of the year. Stuff like that. We get disappointed, or inconvenienced, or outright wronged, and to our ever-loving frustration the person responsible for all of that ISN'T right in front of us.

But someone is. Some poor so-and-so is right there, right when we need someone to go off on. Someone is ever so conveniently placed in position to take the heat even though he or she had nothing to do with the ambush. It's oh so easy; they're right there in front of you.

Except they're not. It's not really them. Not only must we resist the temptation to unleash unfocused anger or frustration, it's probably necessary for us to make an effort to protect that poor soul. Not only from us but probably also from the incompetents north of her on the food chain. It can be hard. Man, it would just feel so good... but we can't. We need to get on the plane.

4) Neighborhood. On that same plane I read a book review in USA Today. A guy was living in a neighborhood for 15 years, a neighborhood that was shaken when a murder- suicide occurred two houses down. No one saw it coming. In fact, no one really knew the family that met such a tragic demise. The author actually grew up in the same neighborhood. He remembered knowing everyone on his street when he was a kid. What happened?

Do you live in the neighborhood? What's your neighborhood like? If you were to stroll down the street how many families could you name? How many kids do they have? What kind of jobs? What are they into? Do the kids play soccer, or baseball? Is it a house full of ballerinas? Do any of the other neighbors ever ask about those weird iron balls with handles lying around the driveway?

Modern life has turned us inward, not only on a personal level (after all, I'm sitting here talking to my computer while the rest of my family waits for me to start a movie), but on a macro level as well. We have all moved indoors. Think about it. That person who strolls by with her dog every day at 5:30 -- what's her deal? That big group of kids on mountain bikes all dressed exactly the same at 7:45 AM, what school are they off to? You used to know that when you were a kid. Heck, if you didn't, your parents can still probably tell you everything about every family 20 houses on each side of your house. On both sides of the street!

It's Easter Sunday today. It's gonna be a really nice day. Heck, it's going to be 75 and sunny in Cleveland. Get outside. Talk to your neighbors. Ask about their kids. Complement their landscaping. You live in the neighborhood. Be a good neighbor.

SO, With 60 pound dumbells I might be able to complete this but it is going to take me an eternity, i will say maybe 40 minutes or maybe more than 40, if you were in my position would you go with the 60 pound dumbells and take a while doing it, would you go with the 45 pound dumbell, it might take roughly 20 to 30 minutes, or would you storm through with the 25 pound dumbells?

From what I've gathered from the pros on facebook you lower the weight on days that say "for time" so that you struggle but can do it in a reasonable about of time, it's not a strength day persay.

To the 800m run I think we could add the 2000m row as an athletic standard created by conventional sport. When I first discovered crossfit and read the part of "What is Fitness?" dealing with metabolic pathways it seemed to me that 6.5 minutes of flat out rowing hit the mark (after the 20th stroke you feel as though you've done a set of cleans and then its just a matter focussing your fight-or-flight reflex for the next 6 minutes - that's what endless training is directed at - teaching you the pain you can handle, convincing you that within 6 1/2 minutes there is no limit to the amount of pain you can handle - with that knowledge you will fight instead of flee.

My neighbourhood is not one. People live here on the way to living somewhere else (myself included), and there is not a dwelling with a ground-level entrance for at least two miles in any direction. Some infants. Few kids. Many small dogs. More seattle-based franchise coffee shops than piano teachers. Over 5000 households with average annual income of150k+ (last census) and not a single book store, not a single library, 1 primary school, 1 baseball diamond, 1 basketball court. My neighborhood is my spouse (it's getting bigger, she's due in August).

Bingo! I'll never be able to look at an escalator the same way.
They close them when they stop because the start and finish treads are not the same hieght, and we the people of grace and dignity eat sh1t when the treads are not equal.

Question about multiple WOD competitions....

The New England sectionals ran 4 events. Was that over one day? If so, what does this say about the main-site WOD program? Is the crossfit competition community signalling that to be an elite crossfitter a person should be doing multiple WODs daily? Or, is the mulitple daily WOD a tool for measuring overall fitness in a competition setting....the idea being that a person can DEVELOP overall fitness by doing 1 WOD per day, but that MEASURING that fitness will require mutlitple WODS?

Is recovery a measure of fitness? I guess it must be since the competition WODs involve multipe rounds in which athletes often (almost always) fail and then must continue. But once one competition WOD is done and the clock has stopped, the fact that there is another competition WOD scheduled for an hour or two later seems to create a situation in which the competition clock continues to run even though the athletes are "resting"...the tick-tock of recovery outside of a timed WOD is, in effect, being being "counted" towards a person's final competition score.

I'm new and I am working. Diet is my biggest problem right now though. I'm terrible at it and any help would be appreciated.

Bingo-thank you! My new neighbors moved in nearly 4 months ago but I couldn't tell you what they even look like. My parents still live in the home I grew up in, most of the neighbors have moved, some have passed, but the ones that are still there will always be family to me!

Question:
Does anyone else find placing the dumbbell on crossed ankles causes a pronounced level of discomfort?

My Fix:
I place the dumbbell between my upper legs just above the knee, then cross my legs, and bend them slightly once I'm on the bar. This helps prevent sliding, and for those who like to kip with weight, it seems to stay a little more stable, no swinging or torquing going on at the end of my legs.

Any other methods people would like to share?

I was just wondering on my drive home from work and after doing a few of the workouts this past week, "Has anyone tried to do an L-muscle-up?" I'm sure that a few people could do them but they would be the elite of the elite. If anyone has, give a shout out, maybe post a video.

My Max PU is 100.

Since I know a ton of you guys are going to have times in the low teens, I am wondering what your 1RM Max pull-up is. And how do you guys get through it so fast (cuz people smoke every workout CFHQ throws at us)?

#27 - Yes, I've done L-mups. The hardest point is when you are making the transition from pullup to dip, without dropping the feet below horizontal. Good times. Give it a go. If you can do deadhang mups you can probably do an L-mup after a few days of trying. Have fun.

To all wondering about the clean and jerks, I plan to do hang cleans and get them overhead either with push jerk or split jerk.

I can't say I know for sure if that is what the coaches intend, but that is my strategy, and it is what has been relayed to me in the past for similar main site WODs.

In terms of pullups, I think they are supposed to be strict, but I could be wrong. Also, I prefer to use a weight belt (the only time I use one anymore!) and just strap on some weight plates. Totally comfortable and convenient.

Have a great WOD everyone! This one is going into my WOD database and I will do it later and post my time. Every second counts. Get some!

Okay...so I don't have dumbbells in the Blackmon CF Box of pain (my garage that is) so I decided that the Speal vs. Kalipa workout from a couple of weeks ago would create a similar stimulous. Of course that is only if the sought after stimulous was absolute nausea and snot blowing muscle fatigue. Anyways, I'm pretty sure I did the round 4 twice and I may have actually seen little green birds flying around my head when I finished.

Just in case you don't know which workout I'm talking about, here it is...

10-9-8-7-6-5-4-3-2-1 reps of 155lb Clean and Jerk with a Cindy round (5 x pull ups, 10 x push ups, 15 x squats) in between each set. Actually I did it backwards, I think it was supposed to go 1-10 but either way same amount of work.

24:00 was my time, which again reinforces that Speal and Kalipa are absolute freaks!

NEVER QUIT!

Relaxing at a resort in sunny Florida. Went with the heaviest dumbells they had (#50 lbs). Thought I would score in the 12 min mark. Well turns out the weight was apt for me currently. Tough workout.

Hey Kevin! Hope you are well. I have used a Valeo weight belt, loosening it abought as far as the belt will allow, enough to slip a dumbell into it then secure the clasp and then hang the belt over your hips with the weight between the legs works well.

Used NO DB for the pull ups~just kept the 20# weight vest on. Pull ups VERY EASY as I could just kip them all up-no broken sets. MUCH harder with a DB between your ankles as my husband did.

OK, AS RX'D C&J with the 45 pound DB, weighted pull ups with the 45 pound DB.

Total time was 24:59

Nice WOD, did some core work afterwards, 5 x 10 to 20 seconds of L Sits, (you never figure out how hard is the L sit in the floor until you actually try it),also did 30 candle sticks and a lot of pull downs( start with chest at the bar, keep your body under control while keeping the legs straight, slowly lower your self while at the same time bring the legs up to the bar without kipping or bending your self (body stay tight and straight), when you are at the low position legs are anckles are touching the bar, at the top chest at the bar all the time the body is under control and legs are straight) some of you want a better Fran time, I want to be able to have a stronger core and kill all the WODs, ;) have a nice one everybody, NICE WOD.

Managed the first 25 pull-ups weighted (25 lbs), next 20 kipping, no weight. Last 10 jumping. Arms are fried. Took way too long for the pulls, broken into 1-2's after the first set.

cleans were hard at the start,pull-ups ,easy to begin with,getting harder rnds 8,9,10.awkward to get a good starting position with the d/b's so low, a lot of the jerks just ended up as thrusters as i came up from the sq cln.
Also, 5-3-1, B/S,S/P, and p/j,s/j,ohs,nae bother ! and one really light lift,plus a lot of loading up and unloading !!

No Wod for me. Did week 3 of 5-3-1, s/p and b/s. Then OHS up to 45kg wanted to try 50kg but a bit unsure of getting the bar overhead without injury to myself or damage to rack.

Away on holiday for 2 weeks, taking my bar and plates with me, (more strange looks). Peace and quiet for Pedro and Tommy with no moaning, bitching, whining or blonde moments for a couple of weeks. Enjoy the silence.

Went tonight to see Theory of a Deadman a Canadian band, playing in Glasgow. Fantastic

Full squat cleans and push jerks; pull-ups with weighted dip-belt. Not much in the tank going in to today's WOD. Could have used 65# DBs for the C&Js (if I had them), but 45# was just right for the pull-ups. Those became really difficult towards the end!

I did C&J with 65's, but only one PU with the 65# dumbell. The knurl tore up my calf! After that fiasco I went to unweighted pullups with the same weight for C&J's. Still wrecked me. Nice big bruises on my delts, lol. My wife rolled her eyes when I got home.

Couldn't do as rx'd since I have "the block" DBs which can't hang from feet and gym was closed today. Had to improvise on a playground.

45#DBs for squat clean and jerk.
Did a bar muscleup at the beginning of each set of pullups. Ex.

10 cj + 1 muscle up + 1 deadhang pullup
9 cj + 1 muscle up + 2 deadhang pullup etc....

not a perfect sub but it still wore me out.

65# straight through for C&J, started at 65# for weighted PUs, then after 4 reps, had to scale to 55#, until 7 reps, then scaled to 45 for rest of the workout. First set of C&J = unbroken. Was only able to get to 5 PUs unbroken. Really not happy about that.

Made this one up today. Couldn't do it as rx'd...I started with 45 for the db c&j and 15 for the pull ups, knowing I wasn't going to be able to get through all the pull ups. I rationalized that for every lb I dropped on the pull ups, I'd add to the c&j.

I completed the wod in 44:23.

During the round of 4 & 7 I went to 47.5 and 12.5.
During the round of 3 & 8 and every round following I did 60 and bw.

Still a killer, my lats are gonna be sore tomorrow.

As rx'd with 40# dumbbells - heaviest I have at home, but I could not have gone much heavier and still had a decent time. Time: 22:14.

Was shooting for sub-20. I knew the weighted pull-ups would slow me down at the end, but I had hoped to make up some time early on with the C&Js. However, the C&Js were taking almost a full minute and I was sucking wind by the second round. I hate weighted pull-ups with dumbbells - I think I have tried every position to hold that damn dumbbell, and they all hurt like a mother. Switched to chin grip near the end - this seemed to help get me through the pullups.

45# DB's for C&J - all the way, no problem.
45# DB's for Pullups, Rounds 1-4. Then had to start removing weights off the DB's to go down to 25# for the pullups...took way to much time for sets 5-6. Then found a 30# DB and did sets 7-10 with that one.

Tore my right tricep muscle at the dirty south sectionals. This was my first Pull-up WOD in over a month. A little sore afterwards, but not too bad this evening. Healthy I would have went heavier. C&Js were unbroken except for the round of 8 for some crazy reason. In my mind I was thinking this WOD would have been harder. I should have gone heavier on the C&Js at the very least. Ah well. I'm glad I didn't push so hard that I re-injured my arm though.

I used 25# dumbbells, which I thought would be light, but which almost caused me to pass out. I've been out for awhile with tendonitis, and it really showed today. I had to break up the DB C+Js almost immediately, and had to break up every round of pull-ups after 4 reps. Also, I had to resort to jumping pull-ups for the last three rounds (8, 9 and 10 reps) because the tank was empty. Great workout, not exactly a great result.

Done after the row/DU/burpee WoD, thought it would be a hell of a lot easier than it was. Left knee, feet and arms started hurting by round 6 and I thought about throwing the towel in, but managed to finish.

Wow, i was really dreading doing this today. I've been putting it off for a really long time. Clearly i didn't bring much to the table today comparing my times to everyone else. Absolutely terrible.
Everything felt like slow motion, especially the pullups at the end. My forearms and grip feel pretty fatigued right now and that did become somewhat of a limiting factor in later rounds.

CLEARLY a lot of work to do on this one and plenty of room for improvement. VERY disappointed with my performance.
