To set the false grip, place the outside edge of your wrist on the ring and curl your hand and fingers down, leaving your thumb on the opposite side. At first uncomfortable, it becomes strong with practice, and is essential for optimal performance on the rings.

I have never done these.
Should they be stronger than my Thrusters and Push Jerks?
Lookin forward to this one! Any thoughts on starting position? Floor or rack?
As a side note I'll have to be careful. This will be a good way to get kicked out of the gym at the University of Michigan. As a cash-strapped student I don't want to try and find another gym that is so empty at 7:00 am....
This'll be a first for me... and I am so looking forward to a strength WOD. The last two days - strength and metcon - have killed me! The front squats today, jeez, I wasn't sure I was going to make it home ;-)
Can't wait for this!
So that's how you set up a false grip! GREAT information!
BONZAI!!!!
Curious: does the false grip in rings have any carryover to the wrist position for arm wrestling? This would be a question for that arm wrestler that was featured in CrossFit a year or two ago.
Should the bar be cleaned or taken from a rack? I can jerk much more than I can clean.
As a scientist, I would be disappointed to receive a so-called science award which was previously awarded to the likes of Billy Graham. I guess it is better to have the 1.5M going to someone other than a fundie, and I hope the funds go towards continuing to debunk creationism, but the whole concept of the award seems pretty silly.
The quotation reminds me of three basic rules I was once told: 1)Know who you work for. 2)Know your enemy. 3)Let the other side pick the rules, and play by them.
It wasn't a scientific award, it was a religious award.
#4. in my case my split jerk is alot stronger than my thrusters, and my push jerk.
#5, #9. from the bar. if they wanted it from the floor, it would be clean and jerks. i think. im just assuming.
hope this helps guys.
The jerk is going to be one of the heaviest things you'll ever put over your head.
Going for 225 today!
#5, #9, yes this is taken from the rack and shoulder level.
Once clear of the rack, grip the bar like you would a thruster (not a clean/rack position).
We all know how to drop a heavy weight safely- I think alot of this movement is getting over the fear of being lower than the weight, and trusting yourself to catch and support.
That SICFIT video is pretty tight.
Are we supposed to rest between reps? If so, how long?
hey whats the song in the video?
btw im loving these highlight clips - they are pretty awesome
Another tidbit on getting the proper false grip:
Set up the pair of rings at a height that you can do dips. Do one. Now, from the top of the dip, grab those rings solidly and don't let go. Don't let your fingers slip, or twist, or move even one iota. Come on down to the ground. With your fingers firmly maintaining the dip finishing position, and maintaining the vertical orientation of the rings, i.e. keep the strap part toward the ceiling, lift and twist the rings upward and inward until they are in front of your face, with knuckles facing each other.
If you did this right, and didn't let go, and the rings are still vertical with straps up, the rings should be in the perfect false grip position. You'll know you did it right if the portion of the ring that's coming out the bottom of your palm, past your pinky finger, is wrapping around your wrist.
I have not seen this exercise and cannot view the videos at work. Can someone please explain this exercise so I can give it a go this afternoon?
#10 Ben:
As a scientist, I would be delighted to receive any award worth 1.5M, regardless of previous recipients :-)
Sidelined with tendinitis or worse of my right shoulder, Ortho in April
Today: physical therapy for right arm, and Kettlebell snatchs with the left; 20k, 1.5 & 2 Pood
*sigh* - "helped scientifically refute creationism..."
As I roll my eyes... Though I'm done debating people on the internet about creation science (it's pointless), I would dare CrossFit to publish one of the many articles that are scientifically based supporting Creation.
You won't find them in any of the "peer reviewed journals" because those journals are run by... guess... Those same scientists who claim to be open to all ideas that are based on sound scientific reasoning, but strangely refuse to publish anything scientific that would refute their evolutionary and "old earth" world view.
I probably won't check back here, things are busy lately, so if you have a reply you *really* want me to see, post it here, and copy it into an eMail to me too.

Split jerks are definitely a great movement. Focus on the triple extension and just watch the weights fly up.
Right on Matt...
I love Crossfit and have been following it for years. I am growing a little tired of the pro-evolution, anti-religion links that pop up on the mainsite every now and then. Please Crossfit, tell me why? If you are going to say that you want people to think and be more open minded then you should be posting articles from both sides.
As far as this made up "science vs. religion" thing...the two don't compete. YOu don't have to chose one or the other. Science does not and can not prove or disprove the existence of God (although personally I think that it does point toward the existence of God) and Christianity does not refute science or ask that believers disregard science. Period. It is that simple. Some of the greatest scientist of all time were either Christians or some way believed in a god.
In fact, discovering science, the study of chemistry, physics, biology, mathematics shows that our Universe is ordered, exists and operates within a well set of defined laws to such a degree that it is mind blowing. Not usually the stuff that happens by accident. Science is but another avenue to discover what God has created...it is really beautiful.
As far as the creation vs. evolution...I am pro-creation but believe in an old Earth. The debate is tiresome because scientifically you can't prove either because we can not recreate the origin of life on this planet, we can not observe evolution that claims to take billions of years...there is no real scientific evidence of a species becoming another species. Please make the distinction between micro and macro evolution...micro is a species changing to adapt, we all believe in that. Macro is a species evolving into another species. Really, the debate is not so much a scientific one as it may be a philosophical one. Evolution scientist and creation scientist are looking at the same data, it is just a matter of interpretation.
I am a born again Christian...my faith is not really affected if evolution is true or not, it really in the end does not matter. If God used evolution (macro) no big deal. On the other hand, an atheist must have evolution be true...if it isn't, they are wrong in a very, very big way. That is why there is such a hardcore effort to debunk creation science by the predominantly atheist or agnostic scientific community. One thing is for sure, we both can't be right.
Off my soap box...time to workout.

It's a shame to put your faith in nothing! Why continue to better yourself through this Crossfit movement when death, as you believe, is the end. What do I care if future generations are better than me? If I'm right about creation and that Jesus was the son of God the creator, then I can keep doing Crossfit in Heaven. If I am wrong and evolution is right, then I really need to start working on getting my Fran time down...not much time left!

#27 Bob, I think you are totally missing the point of Dr. Ayala. This is not Pro evolution vs. Anti religion. Dr. Ayala is saying that science and religion are two pillars of America that have nothing to do with each other. All the controversy comes from trying to make scientific arguments against religion and vice versa when really, they are two entirely different matters. Trying to use science to prove creationism is just as silly as trying to use scripture to prove a scientific theory.
#32 Mike, I think that if you believe you only have one life to live and that's it, you have a pretty good motivation to live it as well as possible. On the other hand, if you have faith that heaven awaits, you don't really need to worry about earthly things such as fitness which will only delay your ascension to the here after ;)

Form on 235 not perfect. Not a very wide "split". Could have gone up more, but form would have suffered.

Why? CF HQ post links to all sorts of articles often not directly associated with bodily training. You also have to exercise your mind and should do so regularly.
As far as I am aware, these daily CF 'streams of consciousness' are here for anyone interested to make a comment, whether it be about training specifics or a linked article, in a freedom-of-speech kind of way. You may not like to discuss certain subjects but there will always be others who will. Is it really a big deal to scroll past a few comments you don't care to read?

Once read a very cool book, "Quarks, Chaos, and Christianity" written by an Anglican bishop who was once professor of physics at Cambridge. In it he tries to explain the logic of invoking a higher being in the beauty and symetry and logic of physics. It's a very hard read but worth the effor.
I wrote a bit on the same subject here: http://skyvisioncenters.com/blog/?p=98

Words can not express the excitement of my progress. I was just e-mailing my Coach of my gains since starting CF December of 09.
On 12/07/09 I weighed in at a reasonable 178 lbs. and had a PR for Split Jerk of 165 lbs. (first time doing split jerk since high school 17 years ago)
Today I weighed in at 158 lbs. and had a PR for Split Jerk of 185 lbs.
So I lost 20 pounds in weight and increased 20 pounds in performance.

First time with split jerks.
As far as a religious debate on a workout website, how about this.
My Bible says in Deut 32:15
"But Jeshurun waxed fat, and kicked thou art waxen fat, thou art grown thick, thou art covered with fatness; then he (Jeshurun)forsook God which made him, and lightly esteemed the Rock of his (Jeshurun) salvation."
I believe that we are to develop our bodies to bring glory to God. As long as we are not vain about it, then we are performing a sin with our pride.
As for the young earth/old earth debate, I am a young earth creationist. I am a born again, blood bought Bible believer.
Genesis chapter one uses the Hebrew word YOM literal translation 24 hours. It's the same word used throughout the bible to describe one day.
Secondly, My Bible tells me that on day three God created plants, then on day four He created the Sun...if there are millions of years in between each day, it's hard to have plants without a Sun.
Finally, to the Evolution/Religion debate, let me say that IF the Big Bang is what started this whole Universe, then why are there laws of physics? IF the Universe is BILLIONS of years old, then how come the sun is still hot and the comets are still ice? The second law of thermodynamics states that temperatures tend to even out. The Law of Conservation of Angular Momentum states that if an object spins in one direction, and things break off of the object they will spin in the exact same direction as the original object...how come planets and moons are rotating in various patterns?
These are just a very few of my observations...
Can anyone tell me where I can locate the 2009 Crossfit Games site.
Thanks

Taking this week easy, half intensity.
Did push press instead of split jerk and kept light at 95# 3 reps for 5 sets. About 1 min rest between sets.
Missed yesterdays's front squat/L pull ups.
Made up with 7 sets:
135# front squat 3 reps
6 dead hang H-pull ups, unbroken, cant keep legs straight
time frame about 1 minutes per round but took 1 min rest between rounds.

Knee Injury...I am depressed! :(
Can anyone tell me why there is a science & religion debate going on in this forum?
Is anyone else tired of seeing posts here that are not recording WODs or answering questions related to CrossFit Training???
Science (from the Latin scientia, meaning "knowledge"). I see all that God has made, and indeed it is very good. Therefore I conclude that God does exist, and He is good. With this knowledge, I worship and serve the creator of the universe. He loves me, and I love Him. Love is the proof.
#59 Maybe all that proves is that the world is NOT orderly, and that humans simply give it order and meaning. What does that mean? ;)
I may get around to doing the FS and L-PU from yesterday, but it's so nice out I might just hit the bike too.

#35 - One of the things that appeals so much about Crossfit is the acknowledgement that to be truly "Crossfit", if there is such a thing, is that you must have a strong mind and a strong body. With this in mind, it makes sense that they post articles about religion, economics, philosophy, beauty, science, diet, nutrition, sports, entertainment, etc.
#24 & 26 - I think that Crossfit has linked to pro-God/creationist articles. However, they are usually not "scientific" articles. God cannot be measured and any of our efforts to do so fall flat simply because of His nature. This ties in to the interview with Coach's father about scientific method. Scientific discussions require specific definitions and parameters, which by definition exclude any discussion of God because we cannot truly define Him(I'm a guy, using masculine pronoun out habit, familiarity and general acceptance, even though I believe God is composed of both masculine and feminine but that's a different argument).
Science and faith are not mutually exclusive. "Science can not define God, but merely to measure the magnificence of his creation." It's not a direct quote and I don't remember who said it.

I feel I am really being held back by lack of access to bumpers. 185 is not hard, the fails on 190 were due to not being aggressive enough, i.e. too scared about dropping the iron weights.
No one says that evolution is a perfect theory, that why it is called theory not law. It's the best explanation we have with the data available. If new data or scenario that better explains the way life as we know has come to exist evolution will be discarded for the better theory. Religion, whether you believe in it or not is irrelevant, does not fill this void as it is untestable and cannot stand up the the scientific method. This has happened repeatedly throughout history. Hope I don't fall of the edge of the earth.

Good day overall. Almost tried the 230 one more time but thought that was a little like cheating. Pretty sure I'll get it next time too which means...another PR...sweet! Glad for a rest day as always.
As for the articles...I think that CF encourages God...I know I have opened the main page a couple of times and said "God help me!" And, I meant it. As a Christian though, I think CF is a good thing because if your body is a temple, then why not use the best practices to keep it in good shape. Just because we don't agree always on who made the body does not mean we cannot agree on our methods to keep it healthy. Embrace our differences and rejoice in our similarities. We all believe in CrossFit and that is a good thing.

Evolution is refuted by a larger community than just Sunday church-goers...the problem isn't that it's a "best fit" solution with tons of holes in it...The true problem is that Macro-evolution is UNOBSERVABLE and hence NOT SCIENTIFIC and therefore religious...which is why Evolution vs Creationism is NOT Science vs Religion but actually theology vs theology...

Honestly I couldn't lift anything today. I did the cf warm up and everything but once I tried to lift heavy weight just felt like it wasn't gonna happen.. Bc I'm relatively new to the sj I figured I'd give up before I hurt myself trying.. So I did weighted pull ups and dips, some bench press and a 5k row. Just wasn't feeling the heavy weight today even though tom is a rest day... Np idea why but glad tom is a day off ( on the days off I usually go for a 20-30 min jog just to get the juices flowin a little)

Ok now for the surprise. After I was done with the work-out, I was talking to one of my friends about the mental issue because of metal plates and then he told me that I can sign up for a 1 credit P.E. class at the college I used to go to that cost probably $25 per semester to use the gym and they have rubber plates! It's a good thing because my 24 hour pass ends in august and school starts up in August. I called the school to set up an appointment. RUBBER PLATES!!! WOO!!!
After I was done with the work-out, I practiced 135 lb negatives with front squat and back squat and holding the lowest bottom position for ROM. The Front Squat had more ROM but the back squat which made it just below parallel hurt alot on the legs. I was keeping a upright back and holding until I had to bail. I guess that's what Coach Glassman meant by "Just Squat".

Just starting to get comfortable with these overhead lifts. They intimidate me. :) I have a history of back problems, so I often worry these lifts will aggravate them if I catch the weight slightly off overhead or bail it funny. Trying to focus on that core stability/strength to help with my overhead lifts.
Getting back on my game today after doing some good work yesterday to refresh my muscles and lungs. Previous PR was 160 from back in December.

First time I've made a real effort to try jerks from behind the head. Supposedly, you can put up more weight this way...and if today's results are any indication, I think it's true. Previous PR was 215.
Felt really strong today. First try at 235 was pathetic and not even close - it totally got in my head. Second effort, nailed it clean. Not aggressive enough with 245 - but I think it's doable...
After 185, I was dropping the weights - too hard to lower back down. But I was lazy and didn't feel like stripping the weight off all the time, so it gave me the chance to try a few heavy power cleans too. Got 225 (PR)!
Today was a good day.

First time split-jerk. I was going to stay very light, but I warmed up light and found it felt very natural, even more so then a regular jerk, so I went up some. At 165 the form got poor (not explosive) so I stopped and dropped down.

Started out with just the bar doing press x 3, PP x 3, and Split PJ x 4. Increased by 10 Lbs and repeated until a little fatigue started to show up at 135 Lbs. From there continued increasing by 10 Lbs but only did the split jerk x 2. Once I hit 175 it was x 1. New PR set at 195 Lbs. Almost had 205 but almost doesn't count. ha ha Pretty sure 205 will go up soon.

Did the standard Crossfit warmup, which went well after time off for tendonitis. Workout was okay, but I'm having form issues with both weight distribution between my front and back legs, and also alignment issues with my back leg. My left (front) knee starts to hurt quick due to incorrect form.
I stayed light because of the form thing and my extended absence. I need to watch some instructional videos in the near future and practice before the next time this WOD comes up.
