Kyle,

You are an inspration to us all. The next time I feel like quitting during a WOD I am going to think of you. Outstanding job!

Kyle you are the definition of heart and perseverance!.....No Excuses!

Comment #2 - Posted by: Matt Hughey at March 13, 2010 4:17 PM

please anyone copying the photo be more careful, its great that people think enough to incorprate stuff they might not otherwise be able to do but in this photo the strap is attached well above the centre of gravity, this means a dip or rough spot in the ground may cause the box to catch and the box will topple forward, the kids could be dragged on the ground for a couple of meteres before the father would be able to notice, make sure to attach the strap well below the centre of gravity

Comment #3 - Posted by: scotte at March 13, 2010 4:47 PM

Undoubtedly the most inspirational video I've seen on this site. Strong work.

30/M/5'10',146 pounds,

looking forward to Break my PR again, after this WOD came around back in OCT I broke my PR once by 15 pounds new PR is 105 pounds, hopefully, I'll brake it again Tomorow, Also today place #160 of about 2000 people in a 5K St Patrick's day run in CO, not bad for being a crossfiter and not a runner, Also Some one ask if you are allowed to kip or not, my personal experience is that depending on how much weight you have, if you kip or not, it doesn't make that much of a difference, what matters is chin pass the bar and arms locked at the bottom, read last time I did this workout, I miss a new PR for about an Inch, meaning nose passed the PU bar but not the chin, I missed a PR once by an Inch so that's how i do it. Have a nice one Everybody.

Comment #20 - Posted by: MattB at March 13, 2010 6:56 PM

For those of you following sectionals i just wanted to say how crushed i am looking at the results from the Idaho/Oregon sectionals. The programming was so brutal that only 6 ladies even managed to finish the first 2 wods. They had 20 spots available for regionals and because of extremely poor programming only 6 of those spots are going to be filled. How utterly disappointing for all those ladies who have worked their butts off training just to be crushed by unrealistic expectations. I feel so very sad for all those women and here is just another reason why HQ needs to step up and take some control over the WODs for sectionals and regionals.

most people rest 3-5 minutes between reps/sets on the 1-1-1-1-1-1-1 or 3-3-3-3-3 or 5-5-5-5-5 wod's.

Comment #45 - Posted by: Ben at March 14, 2010 4:14 AM

Hmm... This looks like fun!

Also, The Blauer Vid is amazing. But, Damn(!), The floor grabs my fee ALL THE TIME!

Seriously, this is a wonderful video about the psychology of self-defense, and the psychology of performance generally. I think it's amazing that while talking about a flinch response he demonstrates an automatic reflexive response by tossing the marker and then catching it. Amazing! I think this flinch response and one's ability to capitalize on it applies in many domains, fight of course being a very important one. But what about presenting: when you make a presentation sometimes shit happens and you have to adapt. You have to be able to give a shot back to a heckler, you have to be able to work through a technological issue, etc. Self-consciousness is wonderful, powerful and often debilitating without training an awareness of it. It dawns on me that once again CrossFit prepares athletes for for some of this: by training for the unknown and unknowable you gain an awareness of your abilities across modal domains. Or at least that's the goal, right? I think if you applied one to Blauer's experiments to a trad workerouter similar things would happen. For example, take someone who does a standard split routine and tell them they have to do the deadlift burpees with weight vest WOD. I imagine their level of self-consciousness would go up. However, do the reverse: ask a CR-er to do a split routine and they'd be fine with it, except for not liking it.

Just my 2¢... Great Vid! Thanks.

Nick and Drew, great hearing from you. Nick, loved the piece you did about QOL - spot on. Love the mustaches.... made the article.

Drew, I PCS in Aug - give me a ring when you get in. I'd pay money to see you drag Deak (250lb on a thin day) in one of these.

Post #3 I had the same concerns about the attachments above the center of gravity. I was doing this with a weight and found that putting that attachments high on the front kept the front edge from getting caught. Good observation though. I had a good number of runs before the kids jumped on. It's pretty loud so I think I'm moving it to grass.

Sunday musings (brought to you by several Crossfitters)...

1) Spring ahead. Yah. About that. Yawwwn.

2) Purpose (Maj. S. Hopkins, via Russ Greene). "The difference between action and activity is purpose." Lots of meat on that bone.

3) Trophy (CF woman on FB). "I am not a prize, but if I AM I'm FIRST prize." How much do I love that? As the father of the fabulous "Lovely Daughter" and sometime sage for many of her girlfriends what I wouldn't give for a pill or a shot of "I'm FIRST Prize" to give to all of them. No more measuring who they are, no more measuring their self-worth through the eyes of some guy. Nope. First Prize.

I'm biased, of course, but it's not the least bit surprising that this comes from a Crossfit woman. Lucky is the man who is the winner, who gets to spend life in the company of a woman like this.

4) CF Kids (Bob Guere). At the Arnolds last weekend with CF Kids we moved ~1200 kids through a classic CF Kids obstacle course. to be truthful not too many of the kids stood out. Not too many memorable individual kids, just memories of massive ear-splitting smiles and peals of laughter.

There were a couple, to be sure, who we all remember, good and not so good. The learning-disabled boy who came back every day, ran the course a dozen times. Yah...he's a good memory. The stud gymnast whose mother wanted us to let him show off muscle-ups on the rings. All he wanted to do was run that thing, face all lit up like a Christmas tree at the thought. Mother decided it was beneath him, his face falling like a dropped ice cream cone on a hot sidewalk. Memory not so good.

But the kids we ALL remember, whose memory makes us smile at each remembrance, are the two little ones totally bald from chemo. Not a hair on their tiny heads. No eyebrows or eyelashes. Bounding through the course as normal as could be. And you know what I remember most? They both had braces on their teeth!

Not a hair on their heads, but braces on their teeth in anticipation of a long life of smiles. Still gives me chills.

5) Old Crow (courtesy of John Brown). You know those liquor ads, all sensitive and such, where they show you a picture of a bunch of young folks warm and close. "You save your good stuff (presumably THEIR stuff) for your best friends." John thinks otherwise. Maybe you save your best stuff for your Mom or your Dad as sign of respect or a thankful gesture, but your REAL friends are the one's with whom you can drink the really bad stuff. The "Old Crow".

If you think about it for just the littlest bit John is absolutely right. With your best friends, your real friends, it's not at all about the what or the where but only about the who. You are sitting, standing, sweating...whatever...with your friend. "Old Crow" is just fine.

Try this. Someone, probably my Dad, told me long, long ago that your closest friends were the people you could hang out with in silence. If there's nothing to say you say...nothing. No awkward silences, just silence. That's one way I knew Mrs. Bingo was "the one" by the way.

(Lifts glass of Old Crow) Cheers.

I'll see you next week...

You know Bingo, I have a really close friend from a previous life that once told me "you know why I like you John? 30#x3 70#x2
40#x3 80#x1
50#x3 90#x1
60#x3 100#x1 (Chin to bar, but not over) Fail

There is still a 110# dumbell at the gym waiting for me next time!

Also for CD, 20 Kipping pu. Bench press 135x20, 185x12, 205x5, 135x20. Not sure why coach doesnt add bench into the equation more often. Thought this would round off workout into a good pull/push session

Way off today. Last time, in Oct, got 100 on two different attempts. Really sore today, but watched Kyle Maynard's video, from the sectional, and had to go do the WOD.

Kyle-you are the greatest! You have such a positive impact with your tremendous attitude.

Carole to do the WOD tomorrow.

Jim D.-nice job today.

30/M/5'10', 146 pounds,

First of all, Kyle you are the Man! No Excuses. As far as today's WOD I am very happy with it.

1 x 70 LB (good)
1 x 80 LB (good)
1 x 90 LB (good)
1 x 100 LB (good)
1 x 110 LB (FAILED BY AN INCH)nose pass the bar but not the chin.
1 X 110 LB (GOOD) NEW PR
1 X 115 LB (GOOD) NEW PR

BROKE MY PR TWICE, OLD PR WAS 105 POUNDS, GO HARD OR GO HOME. MEET ANOTHER CROSSFITER AT THE PETERSON AF BASE GYM, David nice meeting you, the first time I failed at 110 was because of the grip, attempted to do with one hand facing away and the other one facing me. Didn’t work that well because I failed by an Inch, on my six try attempted with both hands facing me, and BANG, got 2 new PR's.

After the WOD did weighted Dips with the 45 pound plate did 4 rounds of 10 reps. Each round rested a minute. Have a nice one everybody.

38M/5'10"/170#

W/U: jump rope, 100 single-unders + 50 double-unders; 10 strict pull-ups.

As Rx: 45-90-100-110(f)-100-90-80-80#.

C/D: 250m erg row (0:44); chin-ups (chest to bar), 1x10.

Last time I did 100# across the board. So not quite there today. Fail at 110# was at eye level. Not a lot of time, so very little rest between sets. Did an extra set to make-up for the missed rep.

Comment #169 - Posted by: rjf (Since 07-20-07. WOD no. 727) at March 14, 2010 6:11 PM

At the weight of 225 I started there made my way up with my V-max vest. 20, 30, and 40 pounds added. Performed pullups all the way up and over bar.
The last set I did 2 reps to finish off since no more weight was added.

I don't post much on the main site, but I wanted to point out (to anyone who may have reservations about whether you see gains with crossfit) that I started crossfit in September '09. At that point, I couldn't do even 1 pullup unassisted--I'm a 22 year old female. Today, I did a 25lb weighted pullup.

Thanks Crossfit!

Not sure if I really failed or not on that last one... but without any validation I'll call it a failure.

All weighted PU were done with a kip. I can hardly do 3 strict dead hangs so I did a couple for practice afterwards.

Weighted pull-ups 1-1-1-1-1-1-1 reps

Did Pull-ups with band at Palace of Arts. No chance of me managing a Pull-up far less a weighted Pull-up, need to lose about 2 stone.

Went to The Palace of Arts. Eleiko platforms, plates and bars. Fantastic, a facility that actually wants you to do Olympic Lifting unlike my local Gym, managed PB in Snatch and Clean just a wee happy dance and a couple of not so happy dances when I couldn't lift what I wanted to.

Also met other Crossfitters, who came along to the Olympic training morning. Nice to put faces to names.

Found out that my Cleans are a nightmare, more like a D/L being yanked from the floor, can't seem to get the pull. Annoying bit is Tommy or Pedro could coach me at the gym if there was not a ban on Olympic Lifting. Not good Fun.

Tommy was snatching 110kg and Clean-Thrusting 115kg. Soooo impressive. The rest of us just watched on in wonder.

Great Fun

Wow! Expected to be able to hit 100# given my general pull-up strength and levels compared to some of the other posters here, but ended up at:

50, 55, 60, 65, 70, 75, 80f.

Some of the results may have been due to doing the WOD in a hurried fashion, as I was carrying the dumbbells over from the other side of the gym, and then not giving my arms much rest before hopping up and going for the rep. Also using dumbbells was a hassle in general. Regardless, definitely found something here to work on. Lots of amazing weights posted today... good job!

Switched from dumbbell in the feet to weight belt at 45. Weight belt was suprisingly more awkward. Next time may enlist some help for ankle hold, start off heavier.

I used a dip belt with a chain to hold the weights.. soo much easier than holding the weights between your legs with dumbells.
Warmed up with lots of double unders, burgener warm up and some light reps of pullups.
Finished with some dumbell snatch work and one arm barbell snatch work

Dumbbells at the gym only go up to 66lb (30kg), will have to use my weight vest next time this comes around. Equalled PR, probably could have gone a little bit heavier.
MU practice afterwards.
