Comment #6 - Posted by: randy at February 26, 2010 5:37 PM

Why do we even post videos like this? Shouldn't the main page at least be reserved for the monsters, potential "Blackhorese", at the very least quality technique?! Examples of what CF is and should be? Don't mean to pick on Dave here, he's been at it 6 mo. or so right? Sincerely, great for him, we were all at 6mo at some point, but people new to CF check out this site daily, should the example they see be bent arm power cleans and unfinished jerks?

Comment #9 - Posted by: Cookie at February 26, 2010 5:42 PM

Travis,
I think that their point in the video was to show that even if you are 6 months in to crossfit and don't have great technique, you can still experience the games. Just because you may not have great technique doesn't mean you're not a crossfiter. They have bunches of firebreathers on the mainpage and journal all the time, this was just a way to feature that broad domain which crossfit attracts.

Comment #10 - Posted by: Christian at February 26, 2010 5:50 PM

I agree with Travis....this kid has all the potential in the world at 6 months....but then again, we ALL have potential. I would have loved to see a video with a coach at his side giving proper coaching cues and then seeing the correction executed. This guy is on his way to a shoulder problem if he continues on this path. For as much as we are preaching quality these days, and I'm glad to see it, it sure would be nice if we continued down that same path with the video content.

Comment #11 - Posted by: ronnie at February 26, 2010 5:53 PM

Christian,

I respect your opinion 100%, and I agree that cf is for everyone, i've finally got my de-conditioned parents on it and am working on my aunt who is recovering from breast cancer.

When cf presents videos of athletes, they should be conducting movements with proper technique, and if not, cf hq, or in this case AgainFaster, should provide correctional subtitles as they did in the last video with Rory McKernan (sorry Rory). Technique, consistency, THEN intensity. Proper technique is vital to crossfit's principle of virtuosity.

Comment #12 - Posted by: Travis Reese at February 26, 2010 6:04 PM

I first learned about crossfit 6 months ago from my friend who is a trainer. He is a firebreather. In any event, he mentioned it to me when I was telling him about the 300 workout (on james madison universities website) that I was trying to do. At the time, my time was 45 minutes (scaled). I did it today as rx'd and I crushed the kids demonstration time by 4 minutes!! finished in 23:10. I know this is off base, but I am so pumped I just had to share. I have drank the cool-aid and I dont see myself ever going back to normal weight lifting again. Cannot wait for the sectionals. Thank You Coach! (and the affiliate sites)

WOOOO HOOO!! look at this workout baby! I remember this from last year did it in 18:50 as Rx'd, Tonight It is going down! hopefully I will break my time, the plan to do the workout is if I rest through the whole workout rest will be less than 8 seconds and keep pushing through, ME I am doing everything close to the Bar and I won't waste time walking (every second counts here), If you are struggling at Pull-UPs, check the Brand X website, they have various versions of the workout so that way you can do it with intensity. it is in the home page, start here, Brand X scaled workouts. once you are there click on the WOD and then today's workout. I wish I could do Butterflies pull ups and this Will be cake and a fly through the WOD! Have a nice one everybody, BRING IT COACH!!!

I just logged onto the mainsite and saw a BJ Penn quote saying that crossfit is his program.

I love it when crossfitters point to BJ Penn as a good testimonial, since in almost every fight his strength and conditional are called into question and pointed out to be his only weak spots in his game. (that is me being sarcastic)

I love crossfit. My point is that maybe we shouldn't use BJ as a crossfit model.

Comment #19 - Posted by: Jonathan Paulson 6'7" 217 26M at February 26, 2010 8:33 PM

#17,
Have you watched BJ Penn's past three fights? He has won in a way that has shown his conditioning outlasts his opponents. He is as phenomenal a fighter as he is conditioned. You don't become the lightweight UFC champ with poor conditioning. He has proven he deserves to be mentioned with the best of the best.

Travis although your intention was not to throw Dave under the bus - you have anyway. Maybe you can ask Again Faster to video tape you and you can be sure to have a perfect 3 minute video. However, I find you will always have someone that is negative, at least you left a name. Even the big dogs sacrifice form when fatigue sets in - are you aware of where Dave was during his workout? I like that the video shows a real person, working on their shoulder flexibility - to improve their form and their wod's. 90% of crossfitters - who pay as much money as the beasts are looking at the video and saying wow maybe I can do it too. Put your top dog on every video and that takes away from the fact that crossfit is also a scalable form of exercise. I get your point - form is important, we are not looking for tips on form from Dave. We are trying to get to know fellow crossfitters. So, relax and let Dave enjoy his 3 minutes of fame without you wrecking it.

I asked him about it, and when he named it I figured, wrongly, that I'd be able to find it on the website. Looked like 21-15-9 of clean, push press, front squat, deadlift--or something along those lines. He was doing 135 lbs but said rx is 95 lbs. Ring a bell to anyone or someone know where I can find it? Pack scale - 15/35/50

1st rd unbroken, quasi-Tabata thereafter

1st two rds on low pullup bar: 8:12 (approx 40 sec slower than last time)

switched to high bar - lost some time crossing the gym to get there

3rd rd: 10:59 (better by 12 sec even with the lost time switching)

total: 19:13 (overall slower by about 30 sec)

Did anyone else think that last round was harder than the first two?

1st time on that workout.
1st round everything unbroken in just under 2:30.
2nd round only pull ups were broken sets, just over 7:30
3rd round everything broken but squats.
Finished in 24:17. Great job programming the last three days.

Most of the CFWU was in the workout, so I just did 3x15 of ball supermans, chair dips, and samson stretches.

HOWEVER, I did every rep unassisted. I had to break the pullups down into one kipping pullup at a time and really threw my body into it, but I got through all 150 reps.

@103- Why did you come to this site with the intention on failing something that the body is capable of? Just because you believe that YOU can't do something doesn't mean that it isn't possible.

The subject of the CrossFit default pull-up has been beaten to a pulp. Understand the fact that there are different kinds of pull-ups and certain WOD's demand specific kinds of pull-ups.

To make an analogy, I would complete a 2 mile course a lot faster with a car than I would running. By logic, I would get my chest to the bar a lot faster using my entire body, namely my hips, than with just my arms.

Your negativity is well appreciated because it reminds most CrossFitters of what type of mindset the rest of the fitness world still have. But it still has a place and that place isn't here.

Cheers,
Viva CrossFit Liberty

Steve S,
A few days ago we did 75 L pullups, those are dead hang with your legs out perpendicular to you body. Could have done 100 if the WOD had called for it. Could do 100 dead hang pullups easier than the L pullups. When I started I was amazed too but I watched people do it so I was encouraged that I could. You can too. Just spend a year working on it, you'll get there.

20-18-16-14-12-10-8-6-4-2 (total 110reps ea) of DL+ Hang Clean + Front Squat + Push Press, in that order, 95 lbs for men and 65 lbs for the ladies, you finish out the reps for each movement before proceeding to the next within the round... and it's for time.

width of grip is also dependent on your strengths and weaknesses- including stability and flexibility. I go wider for a 1RM than I do for high-rep OHS. That's just me, I suppose, but I'm guessing it's true for others, as well.

Steve S -

Even though the pullups are kipping we are still doing the work and the intensity level is higher which is the whole point of crossfit. Higher intensity level over time. If we were stopping every two pullups to rest like yourself then we would defeat the purpose of our goal. And I would be willing to bet that in a strict pullup contest I could do more than you anyways. Because I have stuck to the program and am an all around better athlete because of it.

This was my first time to ever do this workout and my time was 22:30 as RX'd

53 minutes

Through the "25" set in a little over 5 min, everything unbroken, moving nicely - no problem.

Through the "50" set in a little over 20 min, pushups broken 30-20, Pull-ups brokem 15-15-10-10, everything else unbroken - ok, getting tough, but as expected

Finished the "75" round at around 53 minutes with everything broken except for the squats. After 40 pull ups, I moved on and did 50 situps, then back to 20 pull ups, then finished the situps and did the last five pullups. last 25 or so pull ups were not even full range of motion. Messy finish, but finished nonetheless.

I was toast after this one.

Not bad overall.
Pushups only 6 or so at a time on last round.
PU-not much better than last time. Used TRX as PU bar. Grip more slippery. Only 6 or so in later portion & breaks too long.
Squats not bad. Good tech-lumbar curve & knees out. Few breaks on last round.

About 30 seconds slower than last time.

“But in your hearts set apart Christ as Lord. Always be prepared to give an answer to everyone who asks you to give the reason for the hope that you have. But do this with gentleness and respect,”- 1 Peter 3:15

As rx'd, done after the 8x400m.
Felt like switching to jumping pullups for the 75, but managed to get through without resorting to that. Dead hang pullups.

As rx'd, 25:36 (PR by over 3 minutes). Made this one up today in the hotel gym at Disney. GREAT pullup bar there!

This one was hard but didn't seem quite as hard as last time. First round and all squats unbroken. A little better this time on pullups and the last round of situps. Pushups were tough as usual.

p.s. I'm not real fond of early morning workouts, but it's really the only time I can get it in at Disney - I'm beat by the time we get back late afternoon. Anyway, this one felt okay, so maybe I'll try the HSPU/db squat cleans/L-pulls tomorrow. They haven't kicked me out of the hotel gym yet...even though I had to lie down for several minutes after today's WOD...
