He's got courage, because if he falls in that water he "wins" a case of Hepatitis-Leishmaniasis-Saddam's Revenge-Syphilis-Gonorrhea...
Hey guys/gals I have a question concering wall balls. On the faq it says the standard target is 10 ft. Is that 10 ft from the ground, from my head, or from my farthest reach? Thanks.
10 ft from ground. no question is a stupid question.
but if you want to impress us all do it 10 ft from over your head.
see you at the games
So what happens when he gets tired...I usually plop off the bar and that is not an option for him.
Sunday musings...
1) Empty nester. Mrs. Bingo is visiting "The Heir" in Denver, "Lovely Daughter" is making a documentary in Italy, and Lil'bingo is out being a teenager. Just me and the pet menagerie holding down the fort.
I'm not so good at this extra empty nest thing.
2) Mortality. We address the mortality of young men and women here on CF because we are blessed to be among so many men and women who have dedicated their lives to the service of our respective countries. In that service, at times, they make the ultimate sacrifice on our behalf.
It's always a shock, don't you think, when we lose family or friend in the prime of life? In the middle of their prime, at the peak of their performance curve...here one moment and then leaving us in one of the next. These tragedies usually occur through the cruelty of calamity, an accident. Other times we know it's coming, some deadly disease quietly stalking, the inevitability stark and dark and inescapable.
We all die, you know. It's inescapable. I'm a doctor...trust me on this one. It's gonna happen to each and every one of us. Today, tomorrow, or some tomorrow's tomorrow, each of us will depart, each leaving an individual legacy of moments and memories. When will YOU go? What if it's tomorrow? Or next week? Or two months from now? What moments will matter between now and then? What memories will live in your wake?
Wow...where is THIS coming from bingo? Ah...my dear friend who has struggled so valiantly this last year against a particularly deadly cancer learned this week that it has come back. Most likely never left. It's a rather stark reminder of one's own mortality, to watch a friend forced to stare eye to eye with his own.
It may seem trite, I know, but it's still true, eh? We look back on yesterday with no power to change what has come before. We look toward tomorrow, and yet have no claim to a stake there. What we have, ALL we have is this tiny little gift of today. How will we spend this day? What moments will we have? What memories will we make? What will our people remember of our today?
It's all we have, you know. Today. Memories of yesterday, hopes for tomorrow, but only today to live, if we're lucky.
Don't miss today.
If I'm lucky enough, I'll see you next week...
as long as we use an archaic monetary system there will be a need for legal systems that will always be broken...
nice pic!
Wow, that was heavy! and Thank You, it really makes you think.......Thanks ;)

Nice words of Wisdom Bingo, YOU ARE THE MAN!
HAVE A NICE REST DAY EVERYBODY.
Going to Colorado for about 2 weeks right after the 7th or the 8th of March, WOOOOT WOOOT
SANTI.
Wow at first I thought he was dis-arming a bomb. Sweet pullup shot!
Please tell me this picture is photo chopped. I would sure not like to think those defending America are really that foolish!
Hooah, now thats motivating.
1Lt #17:
Relax LT, don't get your panties in a bunch. Its dangerous enough what we do over there, let the guy hang off a bridge if he wants.
Bingo -
Speaking of mortality - we won't all die.
1 Corinthians 15:51-54
51. Behold, I shew you a mystery; We shall not all sleep [die], but we shall all be changed,
52. In a moment, in the twinkling of an eye, at the last trump: for the trumpet shall sound, and the dead shall be raised incorruptible, and we shall be changed.
53. For this corruptible those that are dead when Jesus Christ comes back must put on incorruption, and this mortal must put on immortality.
54. So when this corruptible shall have put on incorruption, and this mortal shall have put on immortality, then shall be brought to pass the saying that is written, Death is swallowed up in victory.
(The corruptible are those that have already died when Jesus Christ comes back. The mortals are the ones that are still alive when he comes back.)
So what do we do until then?
1 Corinthians 15:58
58. Therefore, my beloved brethren, be ye stedfast, unmoveable, always abounding in the work of the Lord, forasmuch as ye know that your labour is not in vain in the Lord.
The photo reminds of a quote:
"The steady advance of veterans is more valuable than the reckless rush of raw recruits."
Perhaps one of my favourite rest day articles.
In their gentle introduction to calculus Howard and Talks (HT) wrote:
- "we have limited accuracy for quantities that are measured, not counted."
They ask us to find the circumference of a circle of radius 3. They give use pi and so tat we may attempt to measure rather than count the radius. Our answer is somewhat inaccurate (perhaps wildly inaccurate), ranging from 18.84 to 18..8495, etc. But this is not necessarily a problem, because as HT writes, we "only need to be accurate within our scale".
I'm with them all the way. Although we may not be able to be absolutely "accurate", we can be perfectly "precise" (where perfection is defined by our objectives). Knowing the radius is 3, and using Pi to the third, fourth, fifth etc., decimal place, we can always come up with the same precise measurement to the third, fourth, fifth etc., decimal place.
I think the emphasis on precision over accuracy reflects the way we experience and act in the world - not as a succession of one-off events and situations that take their signicance from their singularity or evanescence, rather, our experience is a serries of "more or less" repeated sequences (woke up, got out of bed, dragged a comb across my head). The sequences are never repeated perfectly, but there share enough with one another that we can calculate and adjuct our behavior with precision to achieve our objectives. It matters to me that between the months of November and April it will take me "precisely" 25-30 minutes to walk to work; it matters much less (or not at all) that on Friday Februay 26, it took me exactly 1651.24781 seconds. The range of 25-30 minutes counts as "precise" because my "objective" is to kiss my spouse goodbye in the parking garage when she leaves for work at 8:00, and to be sitting at my desk by 8:30.
okay. coolest picture yet by a long shot.
Thanks for the reminder, Bingo. Live.
hello fellow crossfitters,
Anyone has any good suggestions on treating plantar fasciitis. I have tried everything seeing chiroprator, orthotics, massage, ice...you name it i done it..
#24 I recommend reading the book "Born to Run" by Chris McDougall. He makes a very compelling argument on barefoot/less heel shoe, and how it has helped many overcome common running injuries.
So true Bingo. I've had a good think about mortality this week. I'm Reading 'Birdsong' by Sebastian Faulks again. Makes me realise how good I've got it and how lucky I am.
Tyson, great WOD and way to show how its done!
Prolix #24,
While that might not be exactly what Coach was looking for when he posted that article, I do like your analysis very, very much.
Thank you.
Mr. Howard's angst is misdirected; he whines of a broken legal system, but it is our society, and not the legal system, which needs mending.
Lawyers do not sue people. People sue people. Overly litigious individuals in our overly litigious society consult lawyers to seek redress in the courts for far too many injuries, real or perceived.
Howard's Wyoming schoolteacher anecdote said it all. A student's parent threatened litigation. The "fact" that teachers spend most of their classroom time exercising discipline rather than teaching reveals the underlying problem: our society today, which fails to encourage self-discipline, accountability for one's own actions, and respect, for self or others.
Bingo,
The last time I thought about calculus (other than very tangentally in a paper I wrote on Voltaire's treatement of Newton's Principia) was 1991.
I found the comments on the Ted Talks page in response to Howard's piece (and his piece on Pi) to be very interesting, and (for me and my gaping ignorance of mathematics) educating.
I hope someone else develops (or takes issue with)the "mathematical" (rather than the Humean-Kantian) implications of Howard's note on calculus.
Me: 43yo/M/5'10"/181lbs/11%BF
This was my 39th "Named Work Out" of the Year, Kelly.
Warm Up: Greg A's Warm Up + some Bar Muscle Ups.
WOD: Kelly: 49:40
400 meter runs: I ran in my Vibram 5 Fingers and took it pretty easy.it was a run not a sprint on each one.
20' box jumps subbed a 36' box. These took me quite a long time. I jumped up, stood for a three count jumped back down and stood for a three count and then jumped again. It took a while but I did not stop. Nothing gets stares like 150 36' box jumps.
20lb Wall Ball Shots: Subbed a 14lb ball, that's all I had. broke up each set into 20 and 10 more to get ready for the run then because I was totally gassed.
Cool Down: some bar muscle ups and back lever practice.
Have Fun, Train Hard,
Billy
Thanks Bingo. I miss your WOD postings.
Here is another quote you can use, Ischuros:
On life's journey faith is nourishment, virtuous deeds are a shelter, wisdom is the light by day and right mindfulness is the protection by night. If a man lives a pure life, nothing can destroy him.
-- Buddha
First a quick vocab distinction with regards to measurement: Accuracy is how close a measurement is to the true value of something. Precision is how close successive measurements are to each other. Hence it's possible to be amazingly precise and completely inaccurate. This might be fundamental for some but it confused me for quite awhile.
I remember quite distinctly as a young engineering student coming to terms with the fact the fact that only a certain degree of precision is necessary.
Fundamentally in engineering nothing is exact. We use tolerances, factors of safety, and all manner of approximations to cope with the fact that we simply cannot measure things with infinite precision. In some cases it isn't at all possible to measure what you want.
In my structural design coursework, I learned about the design methodology that effectively uses estimates to conceal the simple fact that we can't measure and predict with exact precision the behavior of steel. Basically, as engineers, we use fudge factors to make sure that the roof doesn't fall on our head. Sounds great right?
At first it made me feel pretty uneasy to know that every building I walked into (and particularly high rises) was constructed without an exact knowledge of what was happening at the material level. I have since realized that there are awe inspiring structures standing (the Notre Dame cathedral in Paris) that are not going to fall any time soon and I should be more concerned with things that matter, like heavy sqauts.
Aside from the personal story, my point is that amazing things are possible even without infinite precision or perfect accuracy. I could continue about machine precision and the errors of the floating point number system used in computers, but it won't alter the fundamental point. We don't need to be perfectly accurate with numbers as long as we understand the degree of accuracy required by the task.
Sorry for the long post. Have a great rest daty everybody.
Picture is photo shopped. Great job but if you download the large version and zoom in.
What happened to the heel of his right boot?
Why does his left shoulder not appear to be up as if he was doing a pull up?
Is his left hand holding the dark object that appears under his chin?
Glove on his right hand is misshapen a little.
I am a vet, don't make our vets look this reckless. The are working hard over there and deserve our respect.
IA Gone Bad video! I recognize the venue. It's at Snowbasin at the bottom of the Grizzly Downhill. I used to live there and I skied there 2 or 3 days per week every week during the season. *sniff-sniff* sigh...
m49 3 weeks post rotator cuff surg
my shoulder is noticeably atrophied already,
Not supposed to do any active shoulder exercise yet, but I don't have any pain at all with doing isometric work with my shoulder - very limited ROM. Can't just sit here and watch it melt.
yesterday: 320 squats: 19min 150 calf raises
day before: 150 situps, 150 back extensions: 23 min
Thanks for all the great quotes!! Some of you guys are quite intelligent,it is good to have a Crossfit mind!!
WB/Rope/Run WOD, details posted there.
Guy looks like a contractor...
Tom #38,
I am the guy who received that photo submission and resized it for the site. I can assure that no one at CrossFit created or modified the content of that photo. I also have access to the full size original (about 4x the size of the enlarged image). His right heel and right hand look 100% normal. That is not his left hand on the object in front of his chest. His shoulders look normal to me.
I did not take the picture, so I cannot say with authority that it is legit. But I have edited thousands of photos in my day, and I am very confident it is.
I can also tell you that we don't manufacture any of the photos on this site. We don't have to. The CrossFit community is amazing. We get many times the number of photos submitted that we could ever use.
And Badasses don't have to photo shop. They are just badasses and get caught doing bad ass things.
I don't know what is going on here, but it looks pretty irresponsible. Out of all the risk we take in warzones already, this shouldn't be one of them.
I just can't believe he's walking around with his boots unbloused. He is obviously unproffessional.
WOD -
OHS- to 155
FS- to 225
BS- to 300
All pretty solid, no cheating.
Bingo,
What a post(#8)! Just after I read it, I got a call informing us that my brother-in-laws wife got a new brain tumor & will be going into surgery this week just before her 47th birthday. While those of us as Christians pray and hope for the resurrection, we morn and weep through this vale of tears. It's tough when we are confronted with our mortality. Thanks for your thoughts.
Tony Budding #43
I never meant that anyone at Crossfit manufactured the picture. You said you received it from some one else so you may not know.
When I look at it closely I see very distinct signs of editing. A larger version would only verify this.
I am new to Crossfit and it is Very Amazing. The support and sportsmanship amongst the athletes is what makes it a great community.
The results from my short time performing some of the workouts have given me excellent results. I just need to do it more often.
Again, I never meant to insult anyone at Crossfit. just called it as a saw it.
Tom
The picture looks like one of the foot bridges that cross the canals on Camp Victory close to Z lake near Baghdad. If that is the case the biggest issue would be falling into the dirty water since it inside the wire on a very secure FOB.
awesome video! as a wildland firefighter i really enjoyed it... but why are they using real fire shelters? I hope they were old out of date ones.. we use plastic practice shelters for a reason... the real ones stay folded up until you have to use em. Pray you never have to!

Bingo: Awesome!
Thanks again to Kelley for exceptional Mobility and Recovery yesterday at NYC Black Box. Good stuff!
Great photo.
@ jongb
Unblousing of the boots is a common practice in the military. There are many reasons a Soldier might do it. The most likely is related to heat category. At heat category 4 unblousing of the boots and rolling of the sleeves is recommended.
Second the guy is wearing a baseball cap and eagle industries vest. He's probably not conventional Army.
RE comment #27
if you have done all those and had no luck then look at www.astym.com. its a soft tissue mobilization we do at my PT clinic and I get good results treating plantar fasciitis with it. the website should tell you the nearest clinic that has that service available.
Ran today. Did the Carmicheal interval run:
10 min warm-up w/4 20 sec strides
5x 1min on, 2min off, 2 min on, 2 min off.
10 min cool down.
ouch!
Very nice Ischuros! The last trump when we(believers), are called up by the Lord. Otherwise known as the Rapture.
For Glenn; it's a nice thought but no one can or does live a pure life. Just like everyone will die, everyone is fallible and self-centered. We are only made righteous in Christ.
By Grace alone, through faith alone, in Christ alone.
Are people really critiquing the photo? If you think that picture reflects a bad image on the military, then you are wound too tight. If you have been over there and haven't done anything stupid or fun to try to relax, then I'm not sure what you did there. When you get shot at on a regular basis, you downplay risks a lot. Nothing wrong with the picture in my opinion. Looks fun. I hate to hear what yall would have to say about some of things my team did. Reckless? Not in the least. Unless you also consider running into a building full of gunfire or going without armor into a fight reckless. Yep, that happens too. Its war, get over it and let the people that can have some have fun.
Great presentation by Phil. "People are acting like idiots"... How true is that. There is a tremendous lack of accountability, self-respect and people doing what is right. Its time to get back to the basics...
1: That Pic is AWESOME!!! It may seem a little reckless, but as long as he isn't putting anyone else in danger out there, I don't see the problem. Besides, it could be on a secure FOB out there.. who knows.
2: A little off topic but I'm hearing about it a lot lately. How can we blame society for a persons actions? Are we products of our environment? Or our Parents?
I have a problem believing we are influenced by society. I look at my life and what I have seen and done, I've always seemed to fall back on the values my family instilled in me when I make decisions. I say blaming video games, music, movies and television is irresponsible. I play plenty of games, listen to very loud crazy music, watch violent movies and television shows.
What does any of that mean? Well Im not exactly someone your going to see out and about doing violent and ignorant things. One, it would disapoint my parents and two, my country.
I think parents need to start taking responsibility for what they teach their children and how they bring them up. I am not beating on anyone in particular, but I am product of many different environments and lifestyles. I have seen and done things that most people will never encounter, thank GOD you don't.
People, please take responsiblity for your actions and the mentoring you offer your children. They ARE the future of this country. Where do you want it to go?
3.Live it up, Laugh it off, Drink it down and avoid the BS. Never have regrets, everything you did was exactly what you wanted at some point in your life.
Sorry for the Rant, Have a great day everyone.
I agree with #62. I'm gonna go on a limb and say no one hear knows the guy in the picture, so don't sit there and say he's a stupid show-off. You have no basis to say that, end of discussion. Yeah, obviously no one did a risk-assessment on hanging off a bridge in Iraq, get over it. It drives me crazy to see other guys talking down on their fellow service members though, that's something that makes us all look bad.
I went over there and did my thing, but I probably would not have done this stunt myself. If your all about that though, more power too you. Overall, I still think this is a pretty sick picture
Whoa, that workout was a blast. It took me nearly an hour, but I did row a 5k first.
Can anyone tell me if doing pull-ups in conjunction with dips is a good alternative to muscle ups? I feel like I'm cheating myself on the workout, but my gym doesn't have any rings to use. Since I'm changing stations in a month I don't want to risk ordering some and never getting them, things take a little longer to get here than usual...
There is only one word to decribe the IA gone bad video - FILTHY!!!! I felt Pukey coming on just watching that!!! Especially when they got to the burpees!!!
Next to the video of the SEAL(??) shooting during rounds of a workout and the Krista Pappas video during the 2008 games doing the 30 C&P with her body weight, this is the coolest video I have seen...really shows CrossFit in action!!!!
Pic comment. He is not regular army (ball cap, un-bloused pants, eagle body armor, safariland drop leg). Why is hanging off a bridge for a photo op reckless? I am sure there are 11 other guys on his team with their long guns pulling security. Not to mention 3 trucks w/ 50cals, and any Iraqi counterparts w/ them. The only risk is falling in the shit water. Beside his pistol and radio getting wet, not a big deal, just don't open your mouth, we get enough vaccinations. Not everyone in the military is scared to go outside the wire. Some do it everyday, its not that bad, so stunts like this are not a big deal. You have to make time to unwind, even in a "warzone", if that's what you wanna call it. Why are there no comments on the pics of guys doing handstands in "dangerous" places? I would think all CFers would agree that the pic rocks.
IA Gone Bad is badass. haha
FYI to anyone who hasn't, go check out everyone of the rowing videos in the "excercise and demos" section. I had been rowing here and there and been hovering around 1:40 - 1:45 for my 500m time. Watched those videos and this morning killed my PR, 1:30! I was psyched. It wasn't going faster either, I actually felt better, took time on the recovery stroke, and killed it on the pull. Felt awesome, saw my cals sky rocket at the 20 sec mark and 1 min mark, can't wait to put that into action for next Tabata and/or FGB!
Regarding the pic: Maybe he's not doing pullups at all. Maybe he's looking under the bridge for Osama?
Sorry, had to lighten the mood a little. Hats off to you badass guys that serve.
Sick workout! Great terrain to work with!
Where is the video of this seal shooting during a WOD.
keep running, maybe not uphill though. If IAs gone badly enough that shelters not saving anyone.
its reckless not becuase of security, but because he could fall and break his fool neck
You folks need to lighten up on the guy. I think it is a very impressive pic. I wish I could do that, especially when you consider the weight he is pulling. Go get some D.I.C.K! The dude is just blowin some steam.

This pic shows one thing, and one thing only. A very undisciplined Active Duty Soldier who took an unnecessary risk to try and get his 15 min. of fame. The level of just how stupid this stund was, and the number of people who actually think this is "cool", "badass", or "awesome"....really scares me. It's bad enough that there ar people out there who are trying to kill us while trying to do our job....but this idiot takes a risk of falling and putting himself in a position to no longer aid his unit it accomplishing it's mission. The serious lack of self discipline, as well as lack of leadership of this Active Duty Soldier, only accomplished one thing. It shed a spotlight in a bad way on this Soldiers unit, and only discredited all the other great things this Soldiers unit has accomplished while deployed. And for those of you who think that this idiot is doing nothing wrong...I pray to god you're not in any position of authority and in charge of Soldiers at any level...because all you are just as stupid as the guy in the photo.
You guys got it all wrong....the guy lost his contact lense by the sire of the bridge, and he's trying to recover it.
Proof of it being his face all blury since he cannot see well...It is clear to me...
I think this is a bad ass pic! Keep up the good work.
I worked with this guy in Iraq for a moment. Although I wouldn't do it myself, I wouldn't bust him for it either. He is more than physically capable of something like this. Been to the gym with him. I won't argue over the wisdom, because downrange everyone has their ways of blowing off steam. There are people who would get pissed at this, but they are sitting downrange drinking booze and engaging in other activities they probably shouldn't be, or they are back in the rear judging from behind a desk. Bottom line, judge not lest ye be judged. Badass pic of a badass dude. Wish I was there with you to tell you not to post it though.
@ #76. Are you a ROTC cadet? Lighten up.
This picture is real, I know the dude. TACP airmen are some of the crazy guys alive!
