we miss you bro. Thanks CF
Always hate to see a new Hero workout. RIP Captain. Have to sub though...(no rings, not strong enough to do L-pullups)
RIP Garrett and god bless your family
God Bless you and your family Marine.
Are ring handstand pushups what I think they are?
Wow, this is gonna be tough. What's a good sub for ring HSPU's?
Wow, this is going to be crazy!
Does anyone out there work out at Crossfit Kandahar?
RIP Garrett
GOD Bless the Marine Corps and GOD Bless the Lawton family. Thank you to ALL of our Soldiers for our freedom and our American way of life.
Semper Fi Brother. F.I.D.O. 3,2,1..GO!
Thank you for all the workouts
I believe in cross fit.... Ps RIP...
We got a crew that CrossFits somewhat regularly at Camp Ar Ramadi. RIP Garrett. We're gonna hit this one in the PM!
3, 2, 1....zzzzz
then go :)
RIP brother!
Aloha,
Jordan
'Vaya Con Dios' my fellow Marine..Our Thoughts and Prayers are with your Family ... I will bring it to this WOD in your honor...
RIP brother. Thank you for your sacrifice for our country. Thank you for being one of the rough men so that we can sleep comfortably at night.
Godspeed to you and prayers for your family and friends.
75 squats - Are these air squats or weighted? How much weight?
New to crossfit, so pardon my ignorance.
Thank you for your service!
Air squats if they don't state a weight.
Sunday musings...
1) Ampersand. No reason, really. It's just a cool word.
2) 3rd Son. My "Sometime Son" Alex leaves for Marine boot camp tomorrow. Alex has lived with us on and off for some 4 or 5 years now, plucked off the streets by my kids who announced one night that he was coming to stay. He left us the most touching thank you card in the morning, declaring at first that he would never be able to repay us.
He discussed this with "The Heir" who in effect told him "nonsense." Alex should repay us by being a success in life. How proud I am of both Alex for his decision to serve our country, and of "The Heir" who gave him both comfort and wisdom.
Semper Fi Alex. Keep you head down, Son.
3) Textpectation. I am the world's second worst texter. I'm not sure who is the worst texter, but I'm pretty sure that there can't be more than one person who is worse than I am. I'm not too concerned about that, though, nor am I all that interested in making much improvement. I just can't stand the pressure.
Haven't you noticed? Unlike a phone call where it's totally OK to let it go to voicemail, there's an expectation that a text is going to elicit an immediate response. Actually not so much of an expectation as a demand. Call it "textpectation".
How do I handle the pressure of "textpectation"? Easy. I simply continue to aggressively suck at texting. I have effectively lowered expectations so far that any response at any time is considered something just short of a "visitation".
YMMV, but if you've sent me a text, don't take it personally.
4) Donkey. "Take care of your own "donkey" is pretty much the title of my first talk in Park City tonight. Lil'bingo did my slides for me and titled my talk "Bingo's Business Advice." My basic thesis is that it's not possible for a doctor to take care of his/her patients if he/she hasn't first taken care of themselves. I'll offer up my personal numbers--22%BW fat -> 11% for example--and encourage them to at least think about looking out for their own "donkey".
And guess what? I might even get a chance to mention Crossfit with the cover boy of last month's National Geographic Adventure in the audience. How cool would that be?! Sprinkle a little Koolaid in my day-job world. Mrs. Bingo would say that I'm getting a little out of control, but I think there's a place for Crossfit in EVERY part of my life.
Lil'bingo is hoping...reeeeallly hoping...that someone in the audience is a Crossfitter. "No way! You're bingo!?"
I'll see you next week...
#7...just regress the ring HSPU with regular push ups.
what is the depth we should go to? head to bottom of ring level?
Never a good day to see a hero WOD.
"garrett"
Squats as rx'd
Scale ring HSPU TO 12 with red band assistance
Scale L pullups to 12
20:51
Never tried Ring HSPU before, and couldn't even get one without assistance! Ankles are raw from riding the straps up and down.
RIP GARRETT
Why are we honoring a fallen hero with a WOD that maybe about 20 people that have ever been on cf.com can do RX'd? Ring HSPUs? Really?
I remember when hero's were inspirational to suffer through...not impossible to even do in their honor.
I was friends with Tubes; awesome Marine and an even better person. Thank you for the tribute to him. Semper Fidelis.
Hey Eric, Just modify it and try to your your best. Just as Tubes has done!!!! That might be the purpose.
Scaling the Ring HSPU:
Before scaling down to wall Hespu, consider doing the ring HSPU with your feet elevated on a jump box + stack of plates, waist high. If you do this, attempt to hold in a solid vertical line from hands to hips while doing the HSPU. Otherwise, it looks like incline ring push ups.
Someone out there is doing this WOD, rx'ed and is hopefully recording video of it for the main page.
If you can do ring HSPU, please make a video. It is inspiring to watch people crank out HSPU, but ring HSPU are a totally new level.
I will have to sub on that part. Those of you that do the ring HSPU, how high are you going to set the rings from the ground? Same heighth as if you were doing a muscle up? just wondering.
Bingo-
As the father of two marines, Godspeed to Alex! He will be in our thoughts and prayers. What a family you raised! Makes me verklempt (how's that for a word!) just thinking about it. Semper Fidelis.
May the Lord Bless thee and keep thee, Capt. Garrett. Know that your brothers and sisters at the Washington County Sheriff's Office in Oregon are praying for your family. I never met you, but you are one of my brothers none the less.
Going to have to scale to incline ring push ups. L pull ups will take a while after the first round, I'm thinking.
Semper Fi.
Would ring pushups at double the # of reps be the proper sub for ring handstand PU's? Or even more?
#25, maybe the fact that most will not be able to do this workout as rx'd is a symbolic reminder that most will not give the ultimate sacrifice as our brother and hero garrett did. as we will "do our best" in the workout, so too will we do our best to put selfishness aside and stand up for what it right though it will probably not cost us our life. modifying the workout is in no way taking away from the honor that can be shown by driven focus and contemplative effort during the workout. RIP. frankly, i find your comment disrespectful and selfish.
a note to those wondering about the ring handstand push-ups. just like going against the wall is fine (though not technically a strict hspu) with the regular hspu, so is wrapping your legs around the straps for balance on the ring variation. in this way, they are certainly more difficult, but not impossible.
Well said Moises. I'll do my best.
ps- I am constantly humbled and impressed by the thoughtful comments of most of the "youths" in the crossfit community and am proud to be a part of it. Thanks Moises
how many regular push ups would be equal to one hspu?? I have to sub.
how many push ups would be equal to one *ring* hspu?
Here's to Tubes! We miss you, buddy. Thanks for the workout, CF.
RIP Marine. I will give it my all.
God bless you Sir. I don't even have the words. When a military member is killed, I am certainly at a loss. When it's a Marine brother, it's even more difficult. Thank you so much for your bravery and amazing gift to all of us.
Semper Fidelis.
beastskills.com for ring handstand pushups video
Any ideas on what to do to scale the ring handstand push ups?
Anyone have an idea on what I can do to scale the handstand ring push ups down? I can't even do handstand push ups? Thoughts?
Moises. I appreciate your point of view on the symbology and taken case by case it's a beautiful thought... BUT namecalling gets us no where stick to your points in making a point.
The comment made before was pointing out the CHANGE in HWODs and for your comment to be taken literally what exactly are you saying about the fallen heros whose WOD is quite possible to do? I refuse to accept your point of view because of the comparison it draws on previous fallen heroes.
The above comment is not offensive What I interpret him to be saying is that he wants to have a workout that is normally a challenge, but that he will push through to meet THE goal, not A goal that he makes up for himself. Where crossfitters all around the world meet THE goal together.
to scale them you can use parralette hspu or put a ring on either side of a support pole and use the pole as a stabilizing plane
Blessings to Garrett and family.

RIP Devil Dog, new Hero WOD's are the worst
Bless the Garrett family. Hate to see a dedication WOD as well. I am, however, finding more and more honorable things about Crossfit that make me not only a proud American but also a proud Crossfitter. This will be the start to week three or so for me. I will probably substitute an elevated pushup for this one (haven't built my pvc pipe stands yet)wonder if the globo gym would kick me out for bringin those. Thank God it is air squats though, left quad is a bit beat up.
To all service personnel, thank you for your dedication and sacrice. May God himself protect you all and bring you home soon.
Sincerely,
One Greatful American
M/30/5'10/143 (MTN WARRIOR)
SIR
RIP. God bless our forces, God bless our country, and God Bless CPT Lawton's family, second new Hero workout this month, this workout is going to be a though one. I can do HSPUs, but I never ever even thought about a ring handstand pushup, that's taking the handstand push-up to new level, myself I am going to hang the rings from the pull up bar to maybe 3 inches off the ground with a matt under it and try to do a handstand in the rings first, then like Moises Del Mar said wrap my legs around the straps and try to go for it. those with a solid Gymnastic background should have fun with this one. I can see something like this for the 2010 CF Games. HAVE FUN EVERYONE.
SANTI
Fair Winds and Following Seas, Garrett. God Bless you and your family.
Here's to your family. 3,2,1, go.

Arvind - one ab mat HSPU

Uttam - two ab mat HSPU
37:30
Gautam - went to 2" negative on HSPU

Mad Science: I respect your opinion, but please remember that it is just that. Same as Moises. In no way was he namecalling, just sharing his opinion on an earlier comment.
In any event, thank you to the Glassmans for the WODs, for the CF community, and for this forum where all of us can share our opinions, criticisms, and enthusiasm.
RIP Capt.
Rest in Peace Cpt. Lawton. May your wife and sons live a life of peace and happiness knowing that their husband and father died preserving our way of life. Thank you for your sacrifice. God is with you Trisha, Ryan and Caden.
Semper Externus, Semper Fidelis, Frater Infinatus!!
Oorah Sir!!
My heart sinks whenever I see a new hero wod. RIP Garrett. May God watch over your family.
I miss you every single day, Tubie. Vengeance is mine...
Of course your workout would be an ass kicker. I will see you again. Thanks CF.
m/19/5'11/156
so pumped just did my first strict dead hang muscle up and did three. looking forward to doing this WOD
To Marine Capt Garrett Lawton wife, two boys and other family.
Very sad to hear of the passing of another fine man. CrossFitters in Australia have him and you all in our thoughts today.
RIP.
To all our serving protectors, stay safe out there.
Ben
God bless Garrett and family.
No offense to any of those that have posted before, but drop the nonsence. Try your best to do the WOD as close to RX'd as physically possible and lets grow as a community. Pray for this HERO and do him right by giving your ALL today, whether that be doing this workout as RX'd, or subbing with pushups on your knees. Only you know what you are able to do, just make sure you don't cheat yourself or Capt. Garrett. Even if this was the easiest workout ever posted on the site, the objective is to do it with a sense of urgency that would make Capt. Garrett proud.
Thank you for all that you do, service men and women, now lets all reach a mutual sense of discomfort in their honor, because we all know they aren't sleeping at the Hilton tonight...
Bingo,
As a carry over from yesterday, you correctly point out that we are more on the same page than in disagreement.
As a bit of added background, I have taught PE in UK, Australia, Austria (the one without kangaroos), UAE and currently in Vietnam. I found CF about 3 years ago while googling 'functional workouts children' and came across the CrossFit Kids website and found the mainsite after that, kinda the reverse of most people on this forum I expect.
I agree that the CF Kids branch does focus more on fundamentals and age appropriate cues (I remember your post after the Kids cert. 'elbow lasers' and 'angry gorilla back', stuff I had seen Jeff Martin do on videos) but I must maintain that there is more involved to be truly Physically Educated. Movement Composition and Teaching Games for Understanding (TGfU) to name two, plus the whole 'Health' domain.
I am doing my L1 cert. in 3 weeks time (Brisbane) and will do the CF Kids cert. when I can double it with a trip to Disneyland for my own kids (about 12 months away I expect, unless a cert comes closer). Maybe I will be enlightened after that.
I reply to you now publicly because I know that there are those in the community that would love CF to take over PE in schools. Apart from protecting my own vocation :) I want PE teachers to carry a bit more cred than a Level 1 and a boat load of enthusiasm.
Yours in Brotherhood,
James
RIP PEACE BROTHER I JUST LOST FOUR FREINDS OVER THERE AND I'M ON MY WAY OVER...MY BUDY GOT 11:14 AND I GOT 17:04..

re: how many regular pushups = 1 ring HSPU..... all of them.
Regular pushups are NO kind of sub for a ring hspu. Scale by balancing on straps, on a box, etc. Depth for all HSPU is a shoulderstand, CF normally does headstand pushups, not handstand pushups, believe it or not. Increase ROM with care. Good luck.
RIP Marine! You will be sadly missed in the Mountain State!!!

46 mad science. forgive me for my misinterpretation of the previous comment. there was no name-calling in my comment, nor do i have a desire to name-call, but i do have a desire to stand up for the respect and honor earned by garrett and his family for their sacrifice. complaining about the workout in any way (in my humble opinion) is a form of disrespect. i realize this is my opinion and may not be based in actuality, but hey, it's a forum open for discussion, and if i want to stand up for what i believe is disrespect to a fallen soldier, i will do so. you would do the same thing. no hard feelings; keep up the good work. the fact that you are doing crossfit wods is enough to bring us together. togetherness often fosters debate, but debate, if done respectfully is healthy. crossfit, in general, thrives on it. good luck to all in the wod, and once again: thank you garrett and family. RIP
RIP hillbilly. You've made America and especially your fellow West Virginians proud.
23:30 just did the best i could at hspu im not strong enough to do ring pushups

Squats as Rx'd
Gravitron pullups w/55-85 lb assist
Pushups with feet on a platform about chest high (no rings and don't trust myself to even try hsp's without assist)
tough workout - looking forward to it.
I have a question regarding the hero workouts. Are these workouts the favorite/favored workout of the fallen Soldier/Airman/Sailor/Marine/LEP, or a workout that was named after them? I read the FAQ and understand that "Murph" was one of LT Murphy's favorite workouts, but is that true of the other hero workouts? Thanks.

Hung rings from Smith Machine frame (about 4" from floor), and assited myself using bar on highest setting.
L-P/U's started looking like crap last round.
Had to do sets of whatever I could to get to 25 on the Ring HSPU's; sets of 5 for L-P/U's.
RIP Capt Lawton

Semper Fi, Cpt Lawton. RIP
Garrett was a great guy and a beast of a Marine. He is missed. Will have to sub...I never could keep up with him. RIP brother, I'll see ya on the other side.
Hey! I`m new to this site, and I just started picking up tips from this site (I love this site!)
"Three rounds for time of:
75, 25, 25 reps of each exercise."
Does this mean that the result/outcome after three rounds in each exercise is like the x reps written over? Like after three rounds of each exercise u got 75, 25, 25 reps for each?
My english isn`t so good, either my translating, so I just gotta ask.
Moises, you painted a beautiful picture for a fallen soldier
let's all do this together the best we can
m/44/185
subbed hspu for ring hspu

"Garrett"
Three rounds for time of:
75 Squats
25 Ring handstand push-ups

ring HSPU's with foot assist. I hooked my heels on a rack to help. I could not do it on the ring, it was a mess to try. So I went with the foot assist.
TO EASY.
I did the first set and got 19 reps, that is more then I can do regular HSPU's. I should have gone with regular HSPU's, but I started with the rings I finished with them. Next time I know.
Squats were terreble. Man they were hard today. Quads were killing my. I even felt it in my back. My back is sore now from the squats and dropping off the pullup bar.
I am not complaning, I am just posting how it went.
RIP Garret, God bless and keep your familly.

I agree with Moises...this WOD should be a test of our diligence with CF. Everyone is not expected to do it rx'd, but the effort worthy of Capt. Garrett's sacrifice is.
I know I wont' be able to "rx" this WOD, but as a fellow Marine, I won't quit on the effort.
THANK YOU to the Lawton family, Bingo, and all the armed forces members in the CF community for all you have done and will do to keep me and my family safe!
God Bless!! 3,2,1...GO!

Don't let that stuff get to you...there are ALWAYS going to be people that complain or fuss. There are 92 responses! How many were good, praiseful and motivating?
Hopefully you return to reading the comments. Maybe one day someone will need a question answered or just a motivating word and your response is what will click for them. Stick around for them.

Thank you for your service and fighting a battle that so few are willing or capable of. Your sacrifice does not go unheralded. I know that is of little condolence to your friends and family but, just the mention of the name Garrett in the crossfit community will remind the majority of us of the impossible.
I was saddened to read the other day that almost 75% of males between the ages of 18 and 25 are ineligible for military service due to obesity, criminal history or lack of a GED.
To me, that alone speaks volumes for the young men and women that voluntarily serve to defend our country.
You are "The few, the proud" regardless of your branch of service.

Are you serous? WOW, is all I can say to that. Where did you get those numbers? That seems like a steep number to me. I would think if someone asked me that question that a realistic number would be roughly 25%... Sad, is what that is, just sad.

Comment 153, Mike- An "L-pull up" is a pull up where you lift your legs up at the hips till they are parallell with the ground, so you are doing regular pull ups with your body in an "L" shape. They are rediculous.

Gob Bless Marine Capt. Garrett T. "Tubes" Lawton and all Militay and Law Enforcment Heroes, who defend our freedom each day!
I was honored and privileged to have Garrett call me "Dad" for 30 years. He was the finest human being I ever knew and the only man younger than me that I ever looked up to. He was not only my son but my best friend. He was smart (two engineering degrees), funny, good looking, humble, and altruistic. He was a wonderful father to his two sons, Ryan and Caden, and a great husband to Trish.
I'm a former Marine Sgt and retired LtCol. I commissioned Garrett in Dec of 1999 in front of the Iwo Jima Memorial. He served a tour in Iraq with an F-18 squadron and nine weeks before his death in Afghanistan he won the Bronze Star w/"V" and a purple heart. He ran 100m through open terrain under enemy fire to try and rescue a SF soldier who's humvee had been RPG'd and was burning viciously. Garrett was severely burned repeatedly reaching in through the fire to try and pull him out. That was May 29th, 2008. He was killed by an IED on August 4th. We laid him to rest in Arlington National Cemetery December 5th, 2008, two days after he would have turned 32. I still him every minute of every day. I just wanted you to know a little about the man who's picture is posted at the top.
I love you, "Big G". I always will. Dad
Hey Eric,
there are many people that can't do main site WODs RX, but guess what you scale and do them anyway. Not everyone can be a Marine, but Tubes was. Please dont shoot down a hero WOD because you can't do it. I didnt think I would finish that wod today but I did 58:52 RX. So go home get your ring work on and finish this wod for tubes.

Thank You to everyone who attempted this WOD created in memory of my husband. After Garrett was killed, I began "trying" crossfit as a way to stay connected to Garrett. I loved ring push-ups and I know Garrett was a huge fan of the rings. He was so excited when his pair arrived in Afghanistan. Garrett was the most well-rounded guy I have ever known and the loss my sons have suffered is heart-breaking. Thank You CrossFit. Thank You CrossFitWilmngton NC for your generosity in introducing me to crossfit. Best Wishes!!!

Couldn't do this one. I was so psyched all day for it and then got home after dark and trying to setup the rings on this rigged up pullup bar out here in the dirt, umm yeah. I didn't have a spotter and all I could see was myself flipping through the straps and facing myself on some Iraqi dirt. Then I totally lost motivation and hunger got to me.
Well that's what happens when you try and do this stuff at 2100 at night.

What a workout!, gave it a try to the Ring HSPU, it was hard but they were done. the hardest thing about the rings HSPU was actually to get upside down in the rings so someone spotted me to get upside down, once upside down, strapped myself with both legs and that's how I did them, 1st round was done with full ROM, second and third round were not full ROM in the Ring HSPU. My some: 33:45 – Subbed HSPUs for Ring HSPU
Garrett Lawton was killed on my birthday two years ago. This august 4th I'll turn 24 and I'll be doing "Garrett" Rx and proud as hell to do so. Thanks for your service to all of us and God bless.
We walked among the crosses
Where our fallen soldiers lay.
And listened to the bugle
As TAPS began to play.
The Chaplin led a prayer
We stood with heads bowed low.
And I thought of fallen comrades
I had known so long ago.
They came from every city
Across this fertile land.
That we might live in freedom.
They lie here 'neath the sand.
I felt a little guilty
My sacrifice was small.
I only lost a little time
But these men lost their all.
Now the services are over
For this Memorial Day.
To the names upon these crosses
I just want to say,
Thanks for what you've given
No one could ask for more.
May you rest with God in heaven
From now through evermore.
- C W Johnson

Made several attempts at RHSPU's before starting clock, got a few when in position, but found it difficult to get stable upside down on rings.
So, did mostly floor HSPU, with 5 RHSPU's mixed in per round

Just did max pullup/thruster workout yesterday, so was tired for this.

NOT Rx'd:
37:30
Got 6 ring HSPUs and then had to switch to regular HSPUs
I hang my rings in a tree, and the branch i put them on is too high to allow them to hang nearly to the ground, so i had to go from support and flip myself upside down and configure/contort my legs in some manner to allow them to balance me whilst not creating so much friction that i couldn't push myself up. Needless to say, the effort and time it took to do this was simply impractical for a WOD.
To my surprise as soon as i tried to go to regular HSPUs i was already smoked from trying them on rings.
All in all, i really sucked at this WOD and am super disappointed. The only thing i was truly competent at were the air squats.
Okay, i'm done crying.
50:30
took an old jiujitsu belt and hung it at the middle of the pull up bar and halfway down put my foot in it grab the rings and did it ...it was more of a inverted ring pushup but a good sub i think ..whole lot of fun
scaled to just normal HSPU
36:20
One of the hardest workouts I've done for a long time. Used blue band on ring hspu for first two rounds then normal hspu for last round. THe thing about doing an extra hard exercise is when you scale back a little the tough exercise that once was is a little easier. 20.08
this was nearly impossible for me, in fact, i couldnt finish, i hate making excuses, but i am just getting into this and using this excuse makes me feel like less of a pansy..

Subbed regular HSPU, but set up elevated steps on either side for my hands to get better range of motion and make it more difficult. First round was the hardest trying to get used to the HSPU's on the steps, but after that it was a bit easier and I was able to string more of them together. Squats all unbroken, and L-Pulls were a bitch as usual, but broke them up to make it manageable.

As Rx's 29:34.
17 years of gymnastics, competed in college. I might have done 75 total ring handstand pushups in that 17 years.
First two sets had legs touching the insideof the straps. Last set was really rough, had to wrap the legs around the straps and cheat a little and on the last few had to use the straps to help me up.
Would love to see if anyone did the workout without touching the straps or keeping their feet inside the straps the entire time.

Hern,
Great to "see" you here! For those who passed over his short post, Hern did so much more than "just bring Garrett home." It's far too personal to post here but let me just say Hern is also a personal hero for the "band of brothers" type love he showed my son who was also his friend. Garrett had nothing but kind words for this fine man. Hern is an outstanding Marine and a Great American.
No one else will ever know what you did for Garrett, Hern--but I do--and I will never forget that. Again, from the bottom of my heart, thank you. God bless you brother and Semper Fi. Cal

Thank you to all the men and women that have served and are serving now, I'm in your debt.
Trisha,
Your journey will be never-ending, but time and prayer (and exercise!) will help. I lost my wife one and a half years ago, and she too was part of something bigger than herself - daily farm girl, ob-gyn, wonderful mother to our two sons, 11 and 9 now, everyone's best friend - I look back a lot and realize how blessed we all were to have had her here with us, even if it was abbreviated. The gym has been, and still is, therapeutic for me - even if you can't do the routines(you may be able to knock 'em out!), incorporate the principles into your workouts - multi joint sets, varying things each day, rest days for meditation and quiet times - that's what i enjoy about cross-fit -
Hang in there, girl. I know if you're a military family, you guys are strong, and you'll make it. Just keep moving forward and let those little boys know what a GREAT man their father was.
Take care and God bless,
Kirk Fee, MD

Garrett's dad and fellow Marine officer/prior enlisted type here. Thanks for all of the kind words about my son. He was the finest person I ever knew and the only man younger than me I ever looked up. He was a fabulous son, best friend, and a great husband, father, and a superb Marine. I miss him every day and couldn't me more proud of him for the life he lived and the way in which he gave it. Semper Fi, Big G. Love you--Dad
