Comment #9 - Posted by: MrB at February 13, 2010 5:38 PM

Do we use paralettes for HSPUs like at the games ?

Comment #10 - Posted by: inez at February 13, 2010 5:43 PM

You are right Kg, this picture is disgusting. I don't think I feel comfortable going on the main site, my kids might be scarred by this shocking amount of pornographic material! Haha damn prudes!

Comment #12 - Posted by: Steven@CrossFitAffliction at February 13, 2010 5:58 PM

Anyone know what the paralette set-up/depth/# of plates was for the games? I wanted to see if I could get... one rep of those.

Comment #13 - Posted by: buretto/35yom/6'2"/195# at February 13, 2010 6:03 PM

I don't have any kettle bells, is there a good sub for it?
I once did dumbbell swings, but the most I have is 40lbs.
Are they Russian or American swings?
Thanks.

Comment #14 - Posted by: FinnishCraig m/22/5'8"/159 at February 13, 2010 6:21 PM

@ #2.
Pood is a Russian system of measurement.
1 pd = 16kg = 35lbs
1.5 pd = 24kg = 53lbs
2pd = 32kg = 70lbs

Awesome picture by the way! I hope no lurkers find it offensive :p

Comment #15 - Posted by: Michael W at February 13, 2010 6:21 PM

Are the swings single arm swings? Alternating or 8 right straight 8 left straight?

Comment #18 - Posted by: Chris H. at February 13, 2010 6:54 PM

#16 Mike,

If you can do one arm 70 lb kettlebell swings, you are a better man than me.

Comment #19 - Posted by: Jon/M/27/5'9/160 at February 13, 2010 7:00 PM

@ everyone asking about the kettlebell swings:

Here is a GREAT Crossfit article straight from the horse's mouth that should give you all the information you need about how to do a kettlebell swing (also a great read for the experienced about the difference between Russian and CF KB swings):
http://www.fightfit.co.za/uploads/kettlebell_swing.pdf

So @ Mike:

If you look at the weights Michael W (#15) posted, it will hopefully answer your question on why these bad boys probably won't be done one-armed.

Comment #23 - Posted by: landon at February 13, 2010 7:16 PM

HSPU's
If you guys want to give it a go, set your parallette's 30" wide, stack up plates so that they are about 3" below the top of the parallettes, and do the HSPU's strict with no kipping. Feet must be close together and if they come away from the wall the rep doesn't count.

GHD
Touch both hands to ground and both hands to foot holds on each rep.

KB swing:
KB must finish overhead with ear exposed, KB in vertical position, and use a 72 lb. or 2 pood KB

Hope this helps!

Comment #24 - Posted by: Tommy Hackenbruck at February 13, 2010 7:18 PM

Hey crossfit HQ I was wondering if I could get a WOD named after my uncle. My uncle is Arturo Gatti and I would really appreciate it if we could get a workout of the day in remembrance of him. Thanks and let me know what I would need to do to get this to happen, keep up the great work me and my husband love all that is crossfit.

Comment #28 - Posted by: Annamaria S. at February 13, 2010 7:21 PM

Great opportunity to have the boys train with Zach. I can tell you from firsthand experience that Zach's the real deal.

I don't think CrossFit gets enough credit for bringing together so many like-minded and passionate people from different locations, all over the world.

Despite some of the recent criticism on the net, the fact is CrossFit change peoples lives...for the better.

I know I'm very grateful for what Coach Glassman has created.

Comment #29 - Posted by: Steve Liberati at February 13, 2010 7:22 PM

Quick ? if you done have a 70 lb kb and you want to use a 70 lb db how do you think is the best way to hold it. by the weight at one end or by the handle?

Comment #30 - Posted by: colby at February 13, 2010 7:31 PM

tried one from crossfit football I had seen in 09 and thought looked nifty...

At the top of every min, complete 5 burpees, for rest of min perform AMRAP during that min of thrusters. Goal to reach 100 thrusters.
I went for 85# thrusters, had to PC them up. Was ill Before the wod, and pretty sick after! Only went up to 75. Still, it was something of ~120 burpees and 75 thrusters at 85#. My bumm is sore!

That yellow pool is called a Porta-Tank. In rural places where water supply is a problem, these pools/Porta Tanks are set up for a water supply to fight the fire. Fire trucks that carry water on them will dump their water into these pools and then another fire truck that is pumping the water to the fire will suck the water out of the pool to fight the fire. The fire trucks that dump their water into the tanks will then go to the closets hydrant and fill back up. Once the truck are filled back up with water they will return to the Porta-Tank (pool) and fill it back up. I hope that makes sense.

HandStand Push-ups (HSPU) - go to the Exercises & Demos tab on the left of the CrossFit.com website! Find "Handstand" on that page. There are 3 videos there showing how to get inverted and multiple options on how to scale. If you have a journal subscription (get one), you can see this workout done at the 2009 games with paralettes and a depth requirement. In "Mary at 7k", you can see Rob Miller demo a kipping HSPU.

Kettlebell Swings - Pood is defined under FAQ (tab on left side again). Find the words "Kettlebell swings" (I'm using ctrl+F on my PC) and you'll see the basics. Then there's an 8 part series of vids featuring Jeff Martone teaching you the basic swing.

GHD Sit-ups - Look up the word "Glute" for Glute-Ham Developer (GHD) on the Exercises & Demos page and you'll find an older lecture clip of Coach Glassman & Nicole showing how to and how not to do this movement. Watch closely and save your psoas!

Pick your scaling options for each movement, set a timer for 8 min, press go and do as many rounds of 4, 8, and 12 reps respectively as you can without quitting or changing your scaling options mid-workout.

Get some!

Sunday musings...

1) Oscar Wilde. "Be yourself; everybody else is already taken." Priceless.

2) 30 hours. Amount of time Jeff Tucker spent in his vehicle driving from Texas to Cleveburg for the Gymnastics cert after DFW canceled his flights. Long drive for a Bushmills.

Just thought you should know.

3) Teen drama. Very little of it Chez Bingo right now (knock on wood), but I had an interesting conversation about this in the office with some grandparents talking about watching their teen grandkids being raised. We all had it, the drama. It seems to be a universal observation that it's of a greater magnitude now. Why is that?

If you are of a certain age (like me) you communicated with your friends by telephone. You know, the one on the wall in the kitchen, typically the only one in the house, the one that you shared with everyone else in your family. I know, I know...those of you NOT of a certain age have only seen this on "Leave it to Beaver" re-runs on Family TV, but it was really like that.

Your teen drama took place primarily face-to-face in school, or transpired one-on-one on the phone at night. You had a limit to how long you could talk (your stinky brother wanted the phone), and the "phone game" of a story growing and evolving with each transmittal was the real deal because, well, there was only one call at a time.

Fast forward to 2010. Verrry fast forward. Teen drama, whether it's a bunch of teenagers or a bunch of Crossfitters involved, is indeed a much more intense phenomenon. It hits harder and faster, and it spreads at the speed of light because it TRAVELS at the speed of light. Cell phones, Twitter, Facebook, Text...drama transmittal is now exponentially faster so drama growth is no longer linear but exponential as well.

Actionable point? Eh, I dunno. I guess if you are a parent or grandparent it helps to understand why it is that your teen and young adult kids seem to be hit so much harder and so much faster when the same stuff you experienced hits them. As an adult exposed to your OWN drama, though, I do think this knowledge should give you pause, encourage you to actually pause when in the midst of this kind of thing.

Because you can't un-ring a bell, and when you ring that bell in 2010 the sound travels at the speed of light, and whatever tune you tone rings forever in the vast electronic symphony hall. Teach your teens, but don't forget yourself.

You're a big kid now; slow it down.

I'll see you next week...

Re: photo
Is that what CrossFit has come to? Really?

The time has come to stop objectifying FireFighters. Whoever took this pic, and then had the nerve to post it is making their friend look trashy. I'm all for having fun, but keep that sort of creepiness at home. I mean, jeez, what if my cat was looking over my shoulder when I opened up the site?

4 1 pood KB front squats (starting from the ground)
8 "box" jumps (to a bar stool ~3')

I got exactly 6 rounds

Good to be home :)

Does anyone know what's best to get over a rotator cuff injury? When I attempt to snatch it really hurts.

Comment #90 - Posted by: O'Boy at February 14, 2010 10:24 AM

I know overhead squats really help me. If I workout in my apartment I just hold a belt tight for it.

I don't know how bad it is for you, but keep looking around for some good options... I know google is my best friend

Subbed 70# dumbbell and straight-legged, full range sit-ups:

5 rounds + 8 reps

Definitely need to push harder next time--it's only eight minutes! I might have gone an extra minute though, I had to use a clock on the wall and it was difficult to read where the minute hand was.

Comment #97 - Posted by: angstadt at February 14, 2010 11:10 AM

1 rep snatch--125 lbs (pr getting overhead)
(unfortunately power snatch--forgot i needed to full squat it like thy did in the games)

8 min
4 hspu (head to floor)
8 70 lb db swing
12 make-shift ghd situp

4 or 5 rounds exactly. i lost count, so i have to say 4 until i prove otherwise next time....

bring on the chipper! i've been too much of a coward to set it up and do it out of my own desire. but if it's prescribed...

As rx'd, but subbed 2x35 db for kb swings. 6 rounds plus 2 HSPUs (146 total reps). HSPUs were head to floor, not on paralletes.

That 8 minute WOD felt great. The suck factor had not really kicked in yet. Maybe I should have pushed harder, but I felt like I was moving pretty fast as it was. HSPUs - unbroken except for once when I lost the handstand - I thought I warmed up the shoulders good, but the first round of these were worse than the last (stiff). Same with swings, were awkward til I remembered how to "squeeze" the dumbbells together (also unbroken). GHDs I took a few mini-breaks here and there. I had 3 rounds even at 4 minutes, so I moved a little quicker in the second half of this.

This was supposed to be five rounds, but I felt like crap and didn't want to take 55 minutes to finish. My left forearm has really been bothering me, and it started to hurt in round two; I figured I'd cut my losses and make with the ice. I should probably modify the WOD to be one-arm for a while so I can rest my hurt forearm.

Me: 43yo/M/5'10"/180lbs/11%BF

Today I did my 34th "Named Workout" of the year today, JT

Warm Up: Nothing.

WOD: JT (the shoulder/tricep smoker) 11:57

Handstand Push Ups: head to floor. Actually a pillow on the stone floor, probably 2" when compressed. Toughest part for me.

Ring Dips: all the way down to fist in armpit and up at the top. I did not get all of them to full lock out, I need to work on that.

Push Ups: Chest to floor up as one unit. Elbows close to sides.

This was quite tough. Not a real MetCon but a real focused muscle burn out on triceps and shoulders.

Have Fun, Train Hard,

Billy

Completed 2/14, just getting around to posting -

Used some subs here:

No GHD yet, so just did regular sit-ups
And only have a 35lb DB, so had to use that.

My home gym is still a slow work in progress, but hopefully my Wright HD bar and set of Bumpers will be in today, that will be a BIG step forward!

Anyway - 5 rounds + 7 swings.

Really wanted to get 6 rounds in, and probably could've if it didn't take me so long to set-up for HSPU. First time doing them, so pretty awkward for me. Def want to hit this one again with proper equipment and more experience.

Used 70lb dumbbell for swings, head to floor handstand pushups. 4 round complete, plus 1 HSPU.

Prev 5 rounds even. Hit a wall with handstands with the last rep of 3rd round and remained bad after. Nothing else in the wod slowing me down. Glaring weakness exposed haha.

HSPU's self-assisted (too easy), 65# d/b swings (cardio blast), & anchored flat-legged abmat sit-ups w/ elbows behind ears (close as I can get to GHD). Have a cold & good amount of congestion so numbers could have been better otherwise.
