OK.. I'm loving crossfit. I'm much stronger than I was half a year ago when I was noticing that my favourite cast iron frying pans seemed a lot heavier than they used to be. I love the variety but I am getting frustrated with my pullups. A long time ago I was quite good at them. 3 x 12 dead hang pullups, often with extra weight was a constant in my workouts and when I started crossfit I was excited to be doing them again. I can power clean, press, deadlift and squat close to or more than what I could when I was an elite rower, but my pullups are not improving.

When I started crossfit, we didn't have a bar and I did some negatives off a ledge. I think that holding onto a ledge brought on some tendonitus that gradually got worse through more attempts at pullups (now with a bar that my husband built) and any sort of Olympic lifting that required a grip. I had to give the arms a complete rest for about 3 months is summer/fall. The elbows are better and I've been doing assisted pullups off a real bar now with a foot on a ledge, or a foot inside a bike inner tube to help me up, or jumping pullups. When I try to do them with my full body weight, however, it feels like the tendons in my elbow are going to snap.. it hurts qutie a bit during... but not so much after. My choice is to keep doing assisted pullups and be able to do other exercises that require a grip instead of pushing the pullups and end up injured. That's a no brainer but I am starting to get discouraged that I'm still not able to do workouts as Rx'd. I don't know if I'm looking for answers or just venting.... I think I'm just bummed.

So.. I'll be doing... deadlifts at 160 lbs and pullups with my toes on a ledge. I may not be doing at Rx'd... but I will be doing a workout.

Thanks for reading.

Comment #17 - Posted by: Anna at January 23, 2010 5:37 PM

Wow...not only a pull-up in a wedding dress, but CHEST TO BAR in a wedding dress. Seriously...we are not worthy.

Hey, my name's bingo, and for the month of January I've been offering some Newbie tips on the posted WOD so that we might have fewer questions about the workout from all of our New Year's newcomers. A little glib, a little gleeful, a little snarky, quite a bit full of myself...but hey, no one's told me to stop yet.

Check out THIS new WOD, eh? (Did I tell you I grew among French-Canadian ex-pats?) Deadlifts and pull-ups. Pretty heavy deadlifts if you're new to this, and lots...I mean LOTS of pull-ups. Like 150 PU. Tell you what...we've talked a bunch about PU this month because we do a bunch of PU in Crossfit. 150 PU? Come on. You're new to this. Do you really think 150 PU is a good idea? Right. Me either. What say we do 90, OK? 35-25-15-10-5. Scale these just like all of the other PU you've done this month. Use a Gravitron or use Bands. It's OK to do Jumping PU but for the last time, DON'T DO NEGATIVES on the way down.

225# Deadlift. Woman's weight? Tough call. As Rx'd is probably 155#. Strong women 185#. Now, for you new guys, what does 225# make you think? Do you have a strength background with some DL experience? 225# isn't really that much weight for you. Do it as Rx'd. Does 225 sound heavy, but you have really good DL technique? Nice. Reduce the reps a bit. How about 12-10-8-6-4? 10-8-6-4-2? You get the picture. Does 225# give you a bad feeling in the pit of your stomach, or would you like to achieve the met-con benefit that the experienced/strong CF'ers will get from this? Cool. Do the requested reps and reduce the weight to something that allows you to do each round with one or fewer breaks.

Now that you've been here for a couple of weeks it's OK for you to know that the really elite CF'ers will fly through the DL, they won't even notice, and will work through the PU. This is a really cool WOD. Can you imagine how cool it would be to see someone do the PU AND the DL in a wedding dress.

3-2-1...I DO.

Oh yeah...musings to come...really...I promise...

Sunday musings (anyone miss me?)...

1) Souffle. soo-FLAY. Dick Button used a cooking analogy today while commenting on the US National Figure Skating Championships. SOO-full. V. As in "to souffle". Also Dick Button.

I have no idea what he was talking about.

2) Tiny Gestures. A world famous chef, winner of the Iron Chef contest, heard that a 13yo girl who dreamed of being a chef was in his restaurant. Out from the kitchen he came, a 20 minute visit with my partner's niece and her granddad chatting about cooking, about life, about dreams. She left with an autographed menu; the chef left with a smile on his face and a smile on his heart. No one knows except a small family, a small restaurant staff, and now you. The famous chef had nothing to gain. He'll not be any more famous or any more successful for this gesture. And yet, he's so much the better, eh?

The scorecard in our lives is made up not of the grand gestures or the large successes we or others note. Nope, it's made up of the tiny gestures, all of those little things no one knows about, that no one counts, that don't show up on the public scoreboard. They count.

That little girl will never forget.

3) Hangaburger. Do you have kids? How old are they? Isn't it amazing how many funny things they say? Are you writing the down, or doing something else to remember them? Trust me on this one. "Lovely Daughter" used to call a hamburger a "hangaburger". She used to call me the "Hansondom Prince" (Handsome Prince). Upraised arms, "Ina Huggie" meant give that little blondie a hug!

"(boing boing) Hey Dad...what's up with THIS thing? (boing going)" as one of my sons discovered his manhood.

Seriously. Take notes. Trust me on this one.

4) By next to me. You know that old saying, 'behind every successful man there stands a woman"? Mrs. Bingo and I were having breakfast and reading newspapers today, talking about an article about successful women having difficulty finding men who were not intimidated by their success, wealth, education, achievement.

We got to thinking about what it is that makes a successful marriage or partnership. You know, that bit about 50/50 not being enough. How it has to be 100%/100%, each one totally in. All the chips in the center of the table. My darling Mrs. Bingo has done some stuff over the last couple of years that neither one of us had any idea she could do. Moved from behind to beside. Man, how much better that's turned out to be.

I think love, being in a loving relationship, means reveling in the successes and superlatives of your "other". Who's to blame when a woman of note, a woman of significant achievement does not find someone with which to share that success? Surely there is something that she could do (there always is), but equally surely there is room for a man...some man...to revel in her excellence, her success, her magnificence.

It's time for a change. It's time for that "behind every..." to change. I think my son Lil'Bingo has it closer to right (see #3 above), and I steal his line all the time.

"Mommy, don't sit back there. Come up here. Come sit by next to me."

I'll see you next week...

Deadlifts and pullups and deadlifts OH MY!

Bingo, I dont think you'll ever be told to stop!(Thank God) and looking forward to the musings for some of us it's the only "Sunday paper" we read.

I just hit a PR this past week for DL at 230, however I could've got more but didn't have anymore weight, that situation however has been rectified. So, I'm aiming to do this one as RXD but cant truly promise I will though.

Go Colts even though the jets will bring there A game...can't decide on Vikings or Saints. I'd like to see Farve go out in style (which win or lose he will do anyway, what a season!) But on the other hand I think Brees and Co. really deserve it they've come a long way! I dunno, what do the Crossfit faithful think?

Comment #33 - Posted by: J-Bird at January 23, 2010 6:50 PM

I might actually scale up the DLs and scale down the PUs for this one. 3-2-1-GO.

I had the real honor to attend the wedding tonight with Janet. Ashley is a delightful lady and was a beautiful bride tonight! She's CrossFit through and through (chest to bar? No problem!). We were able to show those in attendance, and Mike and Ash, the .com shot and all were thrilled. Awesome timing!

The photographer is CrossFitter Mindy Bush at 3 cubed photography http://www.3-cubed.com/. So if you are in Chicago, take advantage of her skills!

The wedding was in CF Memphis and was testament to Coach's comments about the community that a good Affil generates and nourishes.

Fine day to be a CrossFitter! Paul

Bingo, as always thanks for the musings and, even for us not-so-newbies, the WOD walkthrough. I only hope, though, that in terms of rest-day sports you watched figure skating only as a warmup before watching, and thoroughly enjoying, UConn's thrashing of Texas.

Anna it's a good rule of thumb to start with about 70% of the guys Rx'd weight. If that's still to heavy try 60% or 50%. That's the beauty of crossfit it can be scaled to anyone. Hope this helps...

And thanks to all for the compliments on the pic, and of course to CF for sharing it. Ashley is an unbelievable athlete, and she was a gorgeous bride tonight. She married Michael Bledsoe in a ceremony AT the box. It was awesome!! I was privileged to be in the wedding party, and we all wore Cons. (What other footwear would be appropriate, right??) It was a creative event from start to finish and obviously involved some pullups, kettlebell swings and burpees at the reception. Haha!!

If you want to check out a few other photos of Ashley's bridal session, including a few in which you can actually see her face, visit the 3-Cubed Photography page on Facebook: http://www.facebook.com/pages/Chicago-IL/3-Cubed-Photography/82463238539?ref=ts.

From SUNDAY 091227- Row 5k for time in local BKK Globo. A wonderfully rare rainy day during "winter."

Shara/30/F/68/140- 1xCFWU with 45 lbs OHS & Gravitron PU/Dips; 26 flat on row, setting 4.5. Tightness in hip flexors and sciatic nerve.

Tim- 3xCFWU with 45 lbs OHS; 23:10 on row, weight on sciatic nerve put legs to sleep the final 1500 meters. Tuesday should be interesting. No post to Cato articles- much too much studying this week, final exam for first 1/3 of Thai Language School Monday and Tuesday.

Bingo- great posts, as always. Guys like you make this community great, unique, and give us a standard of compassion, humility, and humanity to which we can all strive.
Congrats to CF Memphis, esp. Ashley and Michael on their partnership.

Alright... this is what Crossfit needs... a gnarly design for a crossfit tatoo. I want to wake up everyday and identify my body with pure crossfit. Then I want to go smoke myself.

Comment #55 - Posted by: Matt at January 23, 2010 11:24 PM

How should I know if I need to scale down for this one? I would probably have to split the DL to 5-5-5 etc and the pull-ups into 25-25 or 20-20-10 for the first set. is that to "low-rep" or acceptable?

Comment #56 - Posted by: Jake at January 23, 2010 11:42 PM

Mindy,
Awesome job on the pics!

And Great timing from HQ!

Paul,
It was really great to see you tonight, glad I could talk someones ear off about CF while Mike was tying the knot. I'd love to come train sometime. Let me know if you would like to set something up.

I was really hoping after they announced man and wife, everyone would hit chest to floor and then jump up and clap overhead...oh well maybe next time.

Once again, congrats you two!

will do this WOD as r/x as it's a rest day for me on Tuesday but....I think grip strength is going to be a factor here. Can anticipate doing the Pull ups in 2s and 3s by the end

Comment #58 - Posted by: nick in sydney 38/6ft/85kg at January 24, 2010 12:11 AM

Did this one *almost* as RX'd, mainly the reason I didn't is because I only have 96kg of weight (approx. 211#).

Took me 29:49.7. Probably a little slow, but it's mainly because I had to break up the pullups into groups of 2-3 after the initial 10 in each set ;).

Probably a bad habit, but a year ago I couldn't even do 20 in one day... So yeah, it's an improvement for me for sure! 150 pullups in one day is a record for me as far as I'm concerned :D

Comment #59 - Posted by: David at January 24, 2010 12:11 AM

Still nursing bruised/cracked ribs so dead lift movement was slow and deliberate, and I could not kip at all (hurt too bad) on the pull-ups. Used 225 lbs for DL, as rx'd. Had to stop 3 pull-ups into Round 4 (at the 40:00 mark) b/c of the ribs, but I was probably well past the point of diminishing returns by then anyway.

42 DL x 225lbs and 123 pull-ups is still a great workout in my book, just frustrating dealing with these damn ribs!

Thanks Coach!

Julie, awesome post. I think it's normal to go into and out of tendonitis. Not sure if you've tried diet as part of the healing, but it can make a huge difference. Either paleo (strict) or zone, if you're not already doing it, with fish oil in Dr. Sears recommended dosage, can drastically change pain levels and speed healing.

Otherwise, keep working, sub ring rows, band assisted pu, try all different grip styles, warm up hands thoroughly prior to work out (try rolling up a long towel into a roll in your hands, hands in front of body, navel to chest high).

I had great success healing hand/wrist/elbow tendonitis - with a program from Matt Furey, believe it or not, ~$40 - which essentially had me working my hands in all ranges of motion a couple times a day, systematically.

You may even get some goodness from myofacial release/ART.

Good luck. Paul

really to long on breaks, I don't know what is up with me, but the last few workouts have been longer then 321go breaks. i found myself hands gripping the bar and standing looking at it for who knows how long.

I'm ok with the workout, but my metcon is lacking.

OMG. I was looking forward to this workout even though my hands were still raw from the 100 burpee pull ups a few days ago. I tried wearing wide reciever gloves to protect my hands but after a while that didn't help as the bar kept slipping on the deadlift and pu's chewing my hands. Completed with #185lbs deadlift and had to use hooks with wrist straps to hold on to the pull up bar at the end. Limiting factor was defenitly grip strength. I put vaseline on my chewed up callouses. Any other suggestions?

Scaled down the pullups today, still on the mend from neck injury, the lack of strength in my right arm has destroyed my pullup ability.

Sub'd Pullups for Jumping pull-ups and sets were smaller 35-25-15-10-5
But I managed to power through the deadlifts as Rx'd

Anyone know how long it takes for nerves to heal after a stinger?
Also any tips on rebuilding strength, the only movements that seem to be effected have been pull-ups and pushups. I really struggle with both now.

Comment #155 - Posted by: Stevie G at January 24, 2010 11:59 AM

As rx'd, 15:05.

Deads felt pretty good. I had hoped to do these unbroken, but I had to break up 2nd (9-3) and 3rd (6-3) set. Pullups after deads were tough - forearms and grip - first chunk was 15, then did 10's and 5's, with tabata-style rest in between.

2 torn callouses. I tore one during the round of 20, so switched my grip slightly and tore another higher up on the finger in the round of 10. I feel pretty lucky though, I had 3 more that started to blister but held.

Jen did this on Puppies today:

65 pound Deadlift, 15 reps
20 Pull-ups (assisted, gray band)
65 pound Deadift, 12 reps
15 Pull-ups (assisted, gray band)
65 pound Deadlift, 9 reps
10 Pull-ups (assisted, gray band)
65 pound Deadlift, 6 reps
5 Pull-ups (assisted, gray band)

Time: 8:27. She is doing these too quickly, maybe we need to scale her up!

On the road today so I did this in a 24 hr Fitness in Waikiki. Sure missed m equipment at home. Didn't have a bar to do pullups on but, they did have machines with handles on them. One was knurled and the other had rubber coating on it. Then I had to switch between the two while other people were using it. The ability not to maintain a grip really killed my pull-ups.

Doing the deadlifts presented its own challenge. 24 Hr uses octagonal plates so you can't roll the bar to your legs. This made the setup a little more challenging. In addition, had to set the bar down softly between each rep in order not to draw attention to myself. They didn't have an area where you could do deadlifts so I did them between the bench press benches.

I was surprised how much the pull-ups affected my deadlifts. After the first 50 pull-ups the dead lifts felt much heavier.

Can't wait to get back to my garage gym.

Newer to CF - scaled per Bingo's advice - thanks for great stuff Bingo.

Man i am humbled by some times here:

DL - 225 pds - 12/10/8/6/4 - Killer - made me dizzy... haha
PUs - 35/25/15/10/6 - Had to break them up and do some jumpers as I neared the end.

26:31

To make up for my shortcomings - 3 sets of lat pulldowns x 6 @ 160 pounds and 3 sets of leaning over bench rows at 70 pds (8,7,6).
Then i did 50 situps - feet anchored - 1:30 - followed with 10 minutes of ab work and 20 minutes of cardio on eliptical.

Me: 43yo/M/5'10"/179lbs/11%BF

I have not written on the mainsite in quite awhile.

At the beginning of the year I decided to do all of the named workouts in order.

What possessed me to do that, I will never know. I am finding out that many of the named workouts involve pull-ups, push ups and squats. So many that it is a gut check to make through these as rx'd because your too sore or your hands are torn up. Yesterday I did Erin. Today I did Eva, a brutal WOD for sure. Tomorrow is Fight Gone Bad. I am almost halfway through the named WODs and I will be glad to switch back to the mainsite. In my three plus years of crossfit, this has been the toughest challenge that I have done in CF yet. I will check back in with the mainsite every now and then to give an update on progress. :-)

Have Fun, Train Hard,

Billy

Great job to all the oldsters today. Kim, I know you're not supposed to do overhead stuff, but it seems like kipping pullups are what caused your relapse, you silly! (I know, the pot calling the kettle black, ha, ha). Great time nevertheless. Thanks Coach, Lauren, and Tony.

17:40 as rx'd. the issue wasn't the wod. the issue was the hands. when your hands begin to rip on the set of 30, what can you do?

i wasn't breathing heavy at the end because the limiting factor was raw hands and not cardio, strength, or the rest of it. before you go accusing me, my pull up bar is way thicker than any you work out on and i have to tape it to be able to keep any type of grip.

Good Job to everyone!!

Only wish my grip were better! Weight for DL would be fine, but for the lack of grip strength. First set full through with grip reset on 12th rep. Then the PUs killed my grip! Being near the weight of the DL myself, I'd have been better off subbing burpees like the other writer without the PU bar.

Unfortunately, I promised myself to try and rectify the grip problem by NOT resulting to straps. Too bad this workout came so early in my CF life...1 month and counting.

Anyway, the embarassing truth is my PUs went to singles around 25, so I scaled to:
225# DL 15
40 PU
225# DL 12
30 PU
225# DL 9
20 PU and then cut my losses at 30 plus minutes.

My breaks to try and recover some grip had eliminated any MET/CON benefit at that point.

Wish me luck on future compound grip WODs!

Sub'd 205# for 225# DL. Lately I've been concentrating a lot more on form, breaking some bad habits.

W/U:
45# DL, 10 reps
10 Pull-ups
135# DL, 10 reps
10 pull-ups

WOD w/205# sub: 21:04

Not as RX'd

Trying to slowly work up to full use of lower back. After trying to man up and aching for a week every time, I realized I needed to take the DL slower and ease in due to a back injury from Long Long ago. Normally wouldn't scale pullups.....guess I wasn't feelin it.

used 185 for the DL
and scaled 40,30,20,10,5

This was still a burner at 11:00 and my grip is ruined.

Great job ajwolf on the Marathon!

After my little hissy fit about pullups, I decided that I have to make them as heavy as I can without hurting.

I used rings (feels nicer on the elbows) and looped my toes into a bike inner tube that was hanging from the bar. I will just say that after you do a few pullups, the tube stretches and doesn't bounce back like it did on the first rep.

I did deadlifts 15,12,9,6,3 at 165# and pullups 10,8,6,4,2

My elbows feel good but my left forearm should give Popeye a run for the money.

Thanks for the words of encouragement.

Looking forward (dreading??) heavy thrusters tomorrow.

Ha...Just as I thought. Alot of chalk rips your hands faster than with out it. I have been CFing for about 10 months now and I havent ripped my hands this bad since when I 1st started. I used chalk for the 1st time today because I literally fell off the bar midway thru a kip. I figured I would give the chalk ago, and soon after that my hands are ripped and bleeding. The reason why I am saying this is if you are constantly ripping your hands and you use chalk, try to go very lite on it or not at all instead use a towel to dry hands. This is just my thoushts about chalk and hands, I did fine for 10 months with out it, if I use chalk it will be a very small amount just enuf to dry my hands.

I have the PFT coming up soon and need to focus on Strict Pull-ups. I took a minute of rest between sets to focus on getting maximum solid reps on pu's. AND I WAS JUST GETTING REALLY GOOD AT KIPPING TOO!!! Still smoked myself and my grip, but my time would have been AWESOME if I had kipped and not rested.

Followed that up with some machine practice for muscle up. Ouch!

Bingo: been on here for a while and your posts on scaling are great. My wife started doing the WOD about 1.5-2 mos ago and your scalings have really helped her to feel confident in being able to complete things to the best of her ability.

Furthermore, CF has completely warped my wife's mind and body: she is addicted as am I. And she had been in a rut, plateau, but the WOD has pushed her through. She can now do 3 pull-ups and 12 chin-ups. Before starting CF she had to do PU's on the assist machine. Thanks!

DL's as Rxed, pullups reduced to match the number of DL's per round. Probably could have done 2x, but definitely would NOT have had the wrist strength to finish, so...

@ 32m, working with one bar and pull-up machine shared between 2 CFers. Bar was heavy, but could maybe have gone heavier, and probably could have done more pull-ups. All full body-weight pull-ups, which is still a source of pride over here. ;)

.... this was ridiculous. first time i legitimately didnt think i was going to finish a WOD. deadlifts were easy easy but pullups killed me. got down to like only 5-8 at a time. i realize that at the beginning i rely too much on strength and dont REALLY kip, making the end much harder. also got five bloody tears in my hands. how in the bluest am i going to be able to row tomorrow.

Wanted to do this as rx'd...
But the globo was busy and the only usable bar (for kipping) was occupied. So I used the "machine"

Deadlifts were the easy part (??) Stormed through them like nobodies business. Pullups were another story - I did have to wait for the machine twice. But still worked it all through! missed the callous tears by a good 5-10 reps.

That was a tough but fun one to do!

Did 150lb DLs, which is as rx'd for my body weight (same % that 225 is to a 175lb person for my bw)

Subbed Push-Ups for Pull-ups due to grip still in recovery mode from workout last week with the burpees into pull-ups. The breaks in the skin right over a crease take forever to heal cause they dry out and keep breaking...ugh. So frustrating. Just can't get my grip to stay healthy long-enough these days.

Good workout. Push-ups got very hard, as they are my definite weakness, even on knees. So I needed the work on them anyway.

Absolutely loved this WOD. Who knew that deadlifts followed by pullups could be so painful.

Hands ripped apart from the blisters I had taken on doing the 100 burpee pullups.

Today was interesting:
Speed drill WU, then:
WU with 70# bag and 20# vest down then up driveway hill, 10 cleans, back down, run back up inside and 20x135# DL's. Mid-intensity. rest
DL 225x5, 2 sets.
DL 315x5, rest

Then: 100#Bag w/ 20# vest uphill(:37), 10xbag cleans, carry downhill, run uphill inside (1:59),
20x315#DL, no vest (4:47) = 7:23 total
wow, those DL's were SLOW. short rest then WOD:

Son of a gun! Tried doing this sucker from memory and messed it up! Did the following:

DL 225# - 18-15-12-9-6 (4)
Pull-Up - 50-40-30-20-10 (0)

Got to the last set of DLs and after 4 reps my forearms would no longer allow me to pull the bar from the ground. After trying various grips for several minutes, I gave up. DNF.

I had it written down, but forgot my notebook at my desk. Haha! better luck next time!

Does anyone have advice for the following: I am starting to wonder if it is better to scale the exercises and get better time or do any WOD that I physically can as required no matter how long it may take. May be six of one and half dozen of the other, but does anyone have words of wisdom on which may produce better results overall?

Comment #544 - Posted by: Vaughn at February 2, 2010 9:45 AM

Approx 30 minutes.

Grip faded fast.

Did only 15 pullups for the 30 pull up round, and ten and five for the last two rounds.

Stopped the clock, then after a minute or so break, went back and did 15 strict pull ups and then another 65 assisted on the gravitron.

Did deadlifts as required 225.
Pull ups scaled down to 20-15-10-5-5
I ripped my hand on first set of dls so scaled pullups. Grip was dead also.

First time kipping after doing CF for two years. Started to kip on the set of 40. Way too painful to do dead hang pullups.
