what the what?? pull ups push ups squats again??
oh man gonna be a rough one!!!
Whoa coach....are you trying explode our upper body? Dang!
You know, this is almost predictable...
lol!
i had a feeling it would be a third day of the same stuff.
hit it hard!
So do we go from one to the next and then rest 3 minutes. Or do we do 5 rounds of the pullups with 3 minute rests before we move on to the pushups, etc. Basically is this a circuit the. Rest 3 and do it all again in order 4 more times
#8 do the 20, 30, 40, 50. Rest three minutes, then continue with same pattern for 4 more rounds.
Does kipping make the PU easier or faster?
Hope I am less sore tommorrow.
No Mercy! haha gotta luv it!
How cow Batman....Pull Ups again!
Gotta be honest and say I'm not getting the whole "pound the body into submission" thing with three days of the same exercises. Been crossfitting since late 2005 and I've followed pretty well, but over-use injuries have plagued me for the past year+, and these workouts don't help. I think I'm gonna pass on this one.
# 10 kipping pullups able you to do more work in less time so yes the are faster, slightly easier and they make you numbers for strict pullups go up
This will be the first time I do this "As Rx'd."
I've been doing CF religiously for 8 months now. OMG I don't know if it's the moon phase or what, but my whole body is soar after the last couple WOD's .....Ok I quit 3,2,1, GO ... :))
It seems like we haven't done pullups, pushups, situps, or squats in so long....I almost did this today just because i missed them so much....
hmm, starting this WOD cycle tomorrow with Angie. Cursing myself for posting a few days ago that we hadn't had pull ups in 3 cycles
What's with 3 days straight of the same movement? Are you trying to tear our hands up permanently?
Pulls ROCK!! Stop Crying!! You all can go back to "three sets of ten" whenever you want...
Bring it !!! I think it's a bit much but, mother nature doesn't care so, I don't ; ) I'm gonna CRUSH it !!!!
Ouch.
OK. Well then, guess we'll get a chance to talk a little more about body weight exercises, eh?
Now I know what you're thinking...I've always been told that you shouldn't work the same muscles two days in a row, right? So, what's this? Three consecutive days of PU/Push-ups/Squats? What tha...
Here's the scoop. Crossfit is designed to train us for the "unknown and the unknowable". Our crossfit.com workouts are not random, but constantly varied. In life sometimes the same task or challenge arises 3 days in a row. Same thing here. I'll talk about "Barbara" a bit and then offer some suggestions on what to do tomorrow (remember, I'm talking to newcomers).
So..."Barbara"...another one of our "girls". The good news is that we get another "girl"; the bad news is that it's "Barbara". 20 pull-ups/30 push-ups/40 sit-ups/50 squats. Do this combination, rest "precisely" 3:00, then do it again. Total of five time through. The 3:00 between rounds 4 and 5 are simply the fastest 3:00 of your life.
20 pull-ups. The kipping PU is the default PU in Crossfit. Gymnastic, frog-kick, or butterfly, it doesn't matter. Can't kip yet? Bummer for you. Trade in your stopwatch for a sundial. Break up the 20 any way you need, but complete all 20 before you move on to the push-ups. Scale the PU with a Gravitron, bands, or by doing jumping PU. Do NOT to negatives on jumping PU. JUST DON'T. Go immediately to 30 push-ups.
After you finish your push-ups move on to 40 sit-ups. It doesn't matter what kind you do. Anchored or unanchored. +/- Abmat. GHD? What? Are you daft? You're a newbie; don't be silly. GHD sit-ups for you are a straight trip to injury. Finish with 50 squats. Just like always in CF if it just says "squats" that means just you and gravity. A$$ to ankles and stand up, full hip opening. Record your time and hope you've stopped shaking before 3:00 is up.
A word about scaling. The easiest way to do this is to let someone else do it for you! Click on "Start Here" on the left side of crossfit.com, then click on "Brand X Scaled WOD" and look at what Guarddawg has to offer. It's there every day. My thoughts? If you are truly new at this stuff drop down to three rounds of 10-20-30-40 reps. Be safe. Make it just a little bit fun. If you are really chewed up from "Angie" and "Cindy", really sore and worried about today, go ahead and take the day off, or go for a run. We've just done 3 WOD's in a row and tomorrow is a Rest Day. Keep that in mind as you decide what you will do. Crossfit is "you vs. you". No one is keeping score but you.
For what it's worth "Barbara" is the WOD that brings me closest to "Pukie the Clown" than any other. I have a love/hate relationship with "Fran". I just hate "Barbara".
3-2-1...GO.
I agree with #14, this is just asking for injury in the form or muscle tears, spasms, or joint problems. I think this cycle isn't for everyone, and insinuating people are sissies for not wanting to do it is ignorant...sorry coach I like to avoid injuries.
Will be doing barbara and mary tomorrow, couldn't do wod today after working thirty two hours straight with no sleep last night, recover and hit it hard.
Sorry, Greg, but I aint planning on going back to "3 sets of 10". I might not be as hardcore as you, but at least I'll be able to swing my axe when I'm on the roof tonight...
I'm with #21. There must be some logic to it. Just go get it....
1st day of workout. New to crossfit! Should be exciting, can't wait!
Sweet. Had a hunch that this was going to happen. Stuff like this (3 days in a row of more or less the same thing) does get programmed occasionally, and works surprisingly well. Yes, it will hurt and make us dig a little deeper, but that's not really surprising... It is crossfit, after all.
If you're fighting a repetitive strain injury, by all means scale or substitute or what have you. But if you're just sore, give it an honest shot. Some oft past pr's have come when I've been sore and tired and just generally blah about the whole thing, and I've actually felt better after the workout than before.
Bingo: well said. Particularly loved the bit about the ghd situps. We just got a ghd at our gym, so I went a bit overboard on trying it out. Then I remembered that Angie had situps... I paid for my warmup exuberance.
Man, there's been a lot of crying on here lately. If you don't want to do the WOD, rest or choose one you want to do. If you know enough to complain of the inappropriateness, then certainly you know enough to choose one that is appropriate.
i couldn't move my arms to wash my back after yesterdays. fml
ps this is comming from someone with a sub 3 minute fran.
Keep the videos of Mikko going! He is a true warrior and an inspiration to us all. Humble, driven, a crossfitter. An athlete we can all learn from.
Remember in start here is says that main site will tax the world's fittest athletes. Scale if you need to and rest on sat.
aw, come on coach...angie, barbara and THEN cindy would have been alphabetical. you are really messing with my OCD.
and Scott, i dont care what your fran time is, mental toughness is every bit as important as physical development. besides, i imagine bw stuff will dissappear for a few cycles and your body will recover stronger. complaining is toxic. Accept suffering in silence.
I am soar... so soar. I LOVE IT!!!! I just love that sick feeling in the pit of my stomach right before I start a crossfit workout because it makes the "laying on the floor in a pool of my own sweat" after it's over seem soooooo sweet! Started off the year with a PR, hope to keep them coming!!!
(giggles) i love this program XD
I'm a big fan of crossfit. A big fan of the OHS. A big fan of assisting developing nations with humanitarian etc. Combining all three together through one picture though? To me it's bordering on exploitation, and pics like these are the ones that tend to fuel the anti-crossfit sentiment amongst posters in forums all around the place. End rant.
I think there are some out there who need to give Derek White a call at Globo Gym!
MENTAL!!!! SIMPLY MENTAL!!!!
This is going to be a good one.

Your WOD descriptions are great and even for someone like me that has been doing this for a long time, I still enjoy reading them. I'm sure the newbies greatly appreciate it.
Keep up the great start to 2010.
Whew! I don't feel so bad now seeing todays comments. I had the same "What the ...." when I saw the WOD. I feel like a wet towel that's been twisted dry. Sadistic Love I say! But I love it, love it, love it, love it. The physical changes that I am accomplishing are terrific and whether or not my body screams of anger at me, it knows this is the best thing for it. Internal Tough Love! :)

I'm a newbie to crossfit. But I have a long history of training. Been doing crossfit for two weeks without a miss. I want to do Barbara today. I am sore like I've never been before. I want to do it. Should I plow through or scale it back a little. Any feedback would be great.

Push-ups broken in round 4 and 5, anchored sit-ups.
Glad I did Mary (11 rounds) yesterday instead of Cindy. Nevertheless I will remember this as the legendary cycle when I did 365 pull-ups in three days.
Three days in a row of almost the same exercises improves mental toughness more than anything else. You probably won't set new PRs, but you learn that you can get through it, despite soreness and all.
Once you get close to do all exercises unbroken with no rest in between exercises time doesn't improve much anymore. Chris Spealler did 1 rep every 1.5 seconds on average in his amazing 10 minute Angie. How much faster can you go?
At this point of diminishing results the efficiency of the program suffers in my opinion.
Wouldn't it make sense to scale the workout up to force some rest in once you've reached a pace where you can work continuously without any rest? For example after you can do 12+ rounds of Mary, 25+ rounds of Cindy, a sub 12 minute Angie or a sub 3 minute Fran?
You could use a weight vest or replace air squats by overhead squats or substitute an exercise you are weak with.

Bingo...
I have been practicing CF for 2 yrs now. I used to think you and some others that leave lengthy posts regularly just craved a bit of extra attention, but I am trying to be a bit less cynical this year.
I have found myself reading your posts lately, even the ones the last couple days regarding the descriptions of WOD's as they come and go. You don't need my blessing, but keep up the good work. Although we can skip over the post each day, I'm sure thousands of newbies appreciate the explanation, and I will probably continue to read it to remind myself that I was probably confused by some of these WOD's myself at one point (humbleness is good).
Thanks

memuc #61 re: scaling UP
Spot on. The majority of Crossfitters, including yours truly, will find the main page crossfit.com WOD's to be more than enough to continue progressing, to continue to become more fit in every way. Some folks will never achieve "as Rx'd" in any but a handful of them. Still others, even those who do not aspire to compete in the Games, will find that they plateau after a period of time, and that the incremental fitness of a 2:59 "Fran" vs. a 2:51 "Fran" does not really move their fitness meter.
One response? Scale UP. More weight on the thrusters in "Fran". 275 or 325# DL in "Diane". Wear a vest for "Cindy", "Mary", or "Barbara" (well, maybe not "Barbara"). Whether you scale down or up, Crossfit is you vs. you, a continual quest to create a better version of you tomorrow than you yesterday through the work done today.
Keen observation. Thanks.

I have been looking on YouTube for one, and while many are high rounds, they seem partial ROM. It seems reasonable that there is an acutal max, where you take no breaks, have exceptional form, etc. Gravity can only pull you down so fast on air squats and push-ups.

Does anyone know if the endurance wod's are coordinated with the main site. It says on the endurance page that today is a rest day from the main wod's. I could be reading this wrong though. I may do some cardio today. Very sore from yesterday.

Thank God I didn't eat before. quite nauseous right now. I feel worse than after eva. As I have learned to use my abs more when doing pull ups (especially with kip)and push ups, I notice when I follow them with sit ups it is torture! Were sit ups the worst part for others?

BARBARA kicked my butt- but i kinda liked it :)
Noob question - what do you all recommend for post-workout food and/or supplement?
Protein shake? Muscle Milk? or any high-protein food, such as a dairy product.
Is it really important to get protein directly after a workout? Or does a regular healthy diet suffice, especially for a noob like me.
Happy New Year all!
Haven't posted in many a'month but had to reflect on the past year, since starting CF (after doing, well...nothing!) last Jan 19th.
Lost 23#, can do kipping pull ups (although Babs put me in a band today after the last two days), can do real push ups, lift way more weight than I ever thought possible, and even run a 5k (still kinda learning to embrace running)
To those new to CF, stick with it and eat well, you will be amazed.
Thanks to FitMom of CrossFit Persevere and the whole CF community.
Here's to 2010, hope you all surpass your goals.

Just a comment from Mikko's interview.
At the end of his workout he states I never lie on my back, it's a sign of weakness.
Previous interview after the crossfit games he stated something similar and referred to Standing Tall after the WOD.
Fight the urge to make "sweat angels" and walk it off. Your successful when you complete the WOD, but don't let it beat you at the end.

I have a completely torn supraspinatus (part of the rotator cuff) and I'm waiting on surgery with quite a bit of worry. I'm told that rehab from this surgery takes quite a long time. I'm 49 - tore my cuff non crossfit weightlifting (benching). I'm pretty dumb about injury but learning (the hard way). I thought the comments about the repetitiveness of the last 3 WOs were interesting. Although we did a lot of the same things, it seems to me the coaches are way more smart than I ever was. All the movements were unweighted and very basic. I was able to complete all the WODs as rxed even with a torn cuff, which at least tells me that these work outs do not strain the shoulder which I feel may be our Achilles heel.

This is a far far cry from my PR. I felt like i had no pulling or pushing power at all today for pullups, even for being on rings, and pushups were the same. Situps felt slow too. The only thing i was able to continually power through were the squats.
Had a pretty nasty headache with a little dizzinessat the end that was only remedied by putting my head down. That was pretty annoying.
Pretty poor performance day all in all, but i'm glad to have it over with along with this cycle. I'm looking forward to something different than pullup/pushup/situp/squat

This cycle reminds me of getting called out to a friends cabin for a long weekend of breaking concrete, hauling it up a severely sloped hill, and hauling down the newly mixed concrete in a wheel barrow and then pouring the cement. Then, too, the last day felt like the best!

Would have been a big PR, but subbed back extensions for pullups, otherwise as rx'd. Not quite sure why, but I was frighteningly sore from Angie, and even skipped Cindy yesterday. My tendonitis spots are screaming even today from only 100 pullups on Thursday. Subbing BE's for pullups really demonstrated how much those 20 pullups each round strongly affect the pushups and situps, because Barbara usually crushes me and this was dramatically easier than the real thing. Back from 3 weeks away from home. Stuck to 3 days on, 1 day off, using a selection of Eva T's body weight workouts I found compiled on Crossfit Westside's website, as well as suggestions from jon h.

10 ring pullups instead of 20 kipping pullups
situps were unanchored and hip flexors disengaged

Well, since I got to the bloody hand phase from Angie, I decided to pass on these last two days, unfortunately. Go ahead and call me a wimp. Fine.
I do give Crossfit props for giving us body weight wods that can be done without a gym during a holiday time after a lot of us were complaining about not having access to the gym during Christmas. I imagine the coaches were saying, "You want bodyweight wods? Fine, here's some body weight wods! HA!" Evil.
Holy Crap!! These three girls kicked the everloving $*!t out of me!
Started round 1 as Rx'd: 3:41
Rd 2 did 8 jump pu's after fail at 12: 3:57

Rd 4 & 5 dropped to half (10,15,20,25)no jump pu's: 3:18, 3:35
Total time: 31:51.
Couldn't believe how fast I lost it during 1st 3 rounds, even with subbing jump pu's to finish out 20.
Still spent cashout by wandering around aimlessly trying to keep "pukie the clown" outside the door! Still light-headed going on 20 min...Time to eat and drink lots of water.
Can't wait to see what next cycle brings.

My focus for this year is embrace Crossfit 110% and be more of an active participant on posting results. I've been doing Crossfit for 7 months.
M/43/196 - use to be at 305lbs 3 years ago / been working on improved fitness ever since. Crossfit is helping me go to the next level
Location - Somewhere in the heart of Alice and Wonderland - AKA Iraq - non-military
equipment/resources - limited at the gym
The chin up bar is so high I can't use an incline bench to help with chin ups, don't have the graviton, and don't have pull up assist bands... so here's what I did.
Pull Ups is my weakest link.
Friday Angie - I used the lat pull down machine with 120lbs
Saturday Cindy - was able to do the 5 body weight pull ups - accomplished 5 rounds of that program
Today Barbara - used the lat pull down machine, but I was so sore from the last two days put it down to 90 pounds then on the last round put it up to 120 pounds.
The gym here is not a pukie fan so I have to watch my p's and q's. One day I'll have to take a picture of the “don't throw wall balls against the wall.” Anyway..
Today -
20 minute warm up - elliptical - level 6 - 2.5
miles
Barbara:
20 @ 90 Lat Pull Down
30 - bent my knees pushups / was able to do full push ups with Angie and Cindy but the PAIN today! OMG!
40 - sit ups - anchored ankles on decline on lowest decline setting
50 - Squats
Followed this on 4 sets - rested the full 3 minutes - never in my life have I had such an appreciation for 3 minutes.
Set 5 @ 120 lbs lat pull down
30 still bent knee pushups
40 sit ups still on decline - lowest setting
50 squats.
Time 40 minutes - I could have pushed a lil harder but I think Pukie would have shown up - I could here him around the corner - remember - my gym is not a pukie fan. :)
Then walk about 1/4 mile back to room in soft gravel - uhg!
Oh yeah, I stay about a day behind everyone also so that I can get the WOD. I don't have immediate access to the internet so being a day behind helps.
Come April I'll be back home (states) for good and it'll be time to sign up at the crossfit gym at home. Since I'm in a blabbering mood today - goal once home is to become a certified physical trainer and get certified in Crossfit as well. I want to be able to help the potential "Big Loosers" meet and exceed their goals and expectations as well.
Tomorrow is a Rest Day - Wahooooo!
Thank You Bingo for your posts - they are much appreciated.
Peace out until the next WOD!
At work tonight Cleared the one bay at the hall and played floor hockey for an hour. After a good sweat I got to Barb. Did 2 rounds hard and figured I better quit juist incase we get a fire call tonight and I can't move. Good workouts the last 3 days and will be looking forward to a day rest.
Bring on next week I can't wait!
Great finish to a great series!
I was a little scared going into Barbara and did not warm up well, but this type of workout is right up my alley. I had some broken sets on the pull ups, situps and squats but felt great by round 3 and started to pick up the pace. As with any sport warm up is definetly the key to success and that was my down fall in this one. But considering I have never done Barbara before I feel I did well.

As a high school wrestling coach and training partner for some of our elite wrestlers. I was able to improve my time each round. I attribute that to being able to wrestle 3 to 4 full matches straight in our "live wrestling" sessions (that is 18 to 24 minutes of live wrestling after 1 hour of drilling and technique).
I will say I was very close to a pukie by round 5 I was pushing myself hard to break 3 minutes.
I am glad to rest tomorrow!

Practicing butterfly pullups on a swinging pullup bar. Got 14 on round 4. Lost them totally on round 5. This is the first full WOD I've done abs in for 2 months. Took it really easy on them but they're finally coming around.
I really liked Pat Barber's investment in this WOD. A jumping spin from the pullup bar then right into pushups then a scramble to the sit ups. Very awesome.
I liked Mikko's, "I never lie on my back - It's a sign of weakness." The guy is just cool!
