Today's picture is the sort of image that women who are afraid of doing what we do for fear of looking "bulky" or "manly" need to see. Keep 'em coming...

Jenni!! Great pic, girl!!

She is a top level performer and trainer as well. You rock!

#14 - If you've read the recent "Form Follows Function" CFJ article (HAVE YOU?!?), which features this picture, then you know that it goes completely against your "primarily about cosmetics" comment. Nobody said CF was primarily about cosmetics. Stop putting words in HQ's mouth.

#12...you make a really good point. Most girls I know spend their whole time at the gym on either the elliptical or treadmill. Their excuse for avoiding all other exercises is "not wanting to getting bulky."

Unfortunately, since this pic was posted 15 minutes or so ago...it seems 2010 has been filled. We are now available again...it looks like...in 2015.

Jenni, you rock girl. I want to be like you someday!

Love you!

Comments tonight are a comedy goldmine. Good fun.

So is this what Coach was talking about at CF 101- I asked about rest day topics/discussions. He mentioned a change might be happening...

I feel like I am back in school and have a homework assignment over winter break. Ever the nerd, I will read this. I won't ask Goat to explain this to me, I need to read it myself. He is too educated about this, it goes way over my head. Just now he started going on about Friedman...well, its a good way to cure insomnia.

I like this idea though- reading, considering, posting later. Hmmph.

And oh. Nice pic, Jenni!

I think they are GREAT! i hope others appreciate the effort of whoever is making these posts (scanned pages of "positive economics" by Milton Friedman.) The CrossFit discussion board would be much more enjoyable if participants would follow a few basic rules:

(1) Don't complain about the posted workout.

(2) Don't complain about the pictures of attractive women. Whether you like it or not, HQ has decided to occasionally post pictures of beautiful CrossFit athletes on the main page. There is no point debating whether or not this objectifies women every single time a picture appears.

Do any of you have this problem with front squats (and all related exercises) - I can't raise my elbows and get the weight on my shoulders. It feels like my arms are too long. If I raise my elbows, I have to extend my wrists painfully to keep the bar off my neck. When I drop my elbows, I end up holding the weight up with my arms. Happens even unweighted. Tried different grips etc. Can't seem to get my elbows up and weight on shoulders. Any thoughts?

Comment #32 - Posted by: bob at December 29, 2009 7:36 PM

Bob #50
Hey man that is something that we see often. I would guess that you are not letting the bar rest in you finger tips enough, maybe you are gripping the bar too much. It could be a combination of things but I would try to start light until you get the hang of it. Maybe your legs are strong enough to front squat heavy weight, but you need to give your shoulders time to get strong enough to support a heavy bar, or you wrists time to gain the flexibility needed to maintain high elbows. Let us know how it goes

Comment #33 - Posted by: Kade at December 29, 2009 7:50 PM

Bob #50

Make sure you aren't actually trying to hold the bar with your hands. With the bar racked, you can try just using your fingertips to hold it in place.

WOW! 18 posts have been deleted, I wonder why? Here is a little more fuel for the fire... let me premises this by saying I'm a huge Khalipa fan, sorry if I'm misspelling his name, but I was wondering about the "aide" he received during the run that allowed him to finish said run....since Crossfit is going with Corporate sponsors in the 2010 Games, is aide to the athletes going to be allowed in the future.. I know in Ironman competitions any aid by the individuals putting on the event is an automatic penalty for the participant..if they need assistance off the course, it's an automatic disqualification. I know this is not an Ironman, but to claim the fittest title that individual needs to do the work on his/her own. So what is it gong to be?

Comment #40 - Posted by: kris kepler at December 29, 2009 8:47 PM

I had a similar problem and solved it by gripping the bar 3-4 inches outside my shoulders. It allowed the bar to sit on the meat of my shoulders vs. my neck/collarbone. I also only grip the bar with my index and middle fingers. Hope this helps!

Bob re: front squats.
One of the tricky things to learn is to be comfortable with having the bar pressing against your throat in the rack position. Many people will try and hold the bar away from the throat to avoid feeling choked.
Dont worry, let the bar roll onto your finger tips, resting on your shoulders, and pressing against your throat. THEN you can keep those elbows high and watch your 1RM go up.

Comment #47 - Posted by: ian M/32/182/5'11" at December 29, 2009 9:42 PM

#42 Playoff beard: The aide the other poster was referring to was volunteers helping Jason to his feet after he collapsed during the run. In a super strict event like the Ironman, such help would result in a penalty. That being said, I don't think Khalipa was really assisted by the people trying to "help" him and to say he received any kind of advantage from the act is ridiculous.

Now, what I wanted to post about, Jenni Orr! This is fantastic and I loved the Journal piece on form following function. This is the kind of thing that I can really use as a trainer. The biggest fear I hear from potential female clients is "I don't want to get giant bulky muscles". Despite my insistence that it isn't going to happen, a picture is worth a thousand words! I hope HQ will publish more photos like this to show that a functional body is a beautiful body. I'm also wondering, is it ok to repost these pictures up on affiliate sites? Do we need to get permission first? these photos are a great tool for showing what the body of an elite female Crossfitter looks like and I hope we are free to use it.

Thanks

I have a question for those CF'ers out there who do both the CF main and the CF Endur. sites.

The question is (in terms of programming) how should I rest? In other words, I am wondering if I should just skip the CF Endur. WODs on a main site "REST" day or perhaps always take Sunday off from both sites and double up on Mon if needed?

I just started doing CF Endur. (always running) as rx'd within the last month. My sole objective is to improve my run times. I've also been doing the main site rx'd for about 10 months or so. My observation now performing both sites is that I am feeling totally beat up.

I want to be hard on myself and push through whatever WOD is posted. However, sometimes I am tempted to listen to my body and just skip that day's WOD. Conversely, this is exactly what I don't want to get into the habit of doing.

Bottom line, I'd appreciate any feedback/constructive thoughts from those who have had success performing both sites.

Comment #53 - Posted by: Cbus A at December 30, 2009 3:16 AM

It has been extremely rewarding to see the photos of strong and beautiful CrossFit women highlighted over the last month between the main site and the journal articles.

We are living in a society where 90% of girls have an eating disorder and feel they can't measure up to images they are bombarded with in the media. CrossFit women are beautiful first and foremost because of their determination, strength and courage. There are plenty of depictions of women in the media that we could spend time criticizing, this is not one of them.

One of the first things that stands out in my mind with regard to initial exposure to CF was how supportive and non-caddy the women were. Beautiful, confident women that are excited about other beautiful and confident womens' achievements.

It is nice to see the softer side of these amazing athletes. Just because you can deadlift an obscene amount of weight doesn't mean you have no femininity or sensual side. I agree with #13, this is such a great argument for the fear regarding 'bulk' that pertain to the women's population.

Thanks for being one of the great role models of CrossFit for women, Jenni. Stunning.

NW Qualifier participants...heads up on the Atlas Stones! Kurtis Bowler is hosting the Regional's in Puyallup, WA and I wouldn't be suprised to see some new strength element. The NW Reg. last year was heavily strength biased, I expect this year to have more than 2 WOD's, and at least one longer duration that favors endurance, but I'm sure strength will be a big component.

Nice article and pic, I like the message CrossFit women send to all females.

Just realized how important diet is. Took two weeks off of workouts and diet and ate like crap over the holidays. Started eating better Sunday. Tried the 5k row monday and quit after 3k because I was getting a crappy time. Finished with intervals. Yesterday did the 5k row and pr'd by 20 sec. after 2.5 days of great diet. Not really relevant to the post today but maybe this will give people motivation to clean up the diet with the new year, I guarantee it will help all facets of your training.

to Cbus A:
always, always, always listen to your body. I'm sure you know this but it is recommended that you follow the main site WOD strictly and augment with CFE 2-3 times per week. My advice would be to take advantage of the rest days by resting totally-doubling up is fine in one day. CFE recommends waiting 3 or more hours between workouts, so i would say if the main site cycle begins on monday, do CFE M,W, and F, using sunday and thursday as complete rest days. make sure you vary your exercises for CFE and cross-train, and take a day off if you need it. Also, dont feel obligated to follow the order of WODs on CFE-all of those interval workouts are awesome, so you have some flexibility to pick and choose. hope this helps.

Great pic. Shows the balanced body resulting from crossfit. Jenni's legs/hamstrings are superb.

Comment #71 - Posted by: StanXFinAK at December 30, 2009 9:14 AM

Cbus A- a little long-winded; sorry. I'm a runner (ran competitively from 10-26 culminating at the NCAA DI Level) who came to CF to become more balanced for as a military guy. I hope folks will excuse the length because the question of how to best create synergy between CrossFit WODs and Anaerobic Endurance programming discussion has a bit of merit and is something I've been considering for the past 18 months. I've failed to yet find the best answer other than "what works for me," but I still don't have an exactly perfect program yet. The "no sh*t" that the veterans and elites would say to that last comment is it's likely because I have not yet been to a Level 1 Cert nor POSE seminar. You get what you pay for... none here in Thailand, though we do get a lot of crazy looks when my wife and I do power cleans in the Thai version of Globo.

Absolutely agree with #67 Phil and take mine a step further by backing off WODs 18 days (no science there, I just started my incorporation of CFE after Leadville recovery this SEP and that happened to be 18 SEP). It helps me with programming workouts. BTW- I did not use CFE to prep for Leadville- a deliberate choice because running that event for me was about specificity and I was NOT balanced beyond inconsistently following WODs here for the final six-months prior to the race.

Last point and I'm out- when you feel like you're suffering from more than DOMS and "hear" your body screaming, "Dude, I'm overtrained," scale weight or rest. We err on the side of being able to consistently improve without injury.

Thanks for popping up on the net with the CFE discussion here. Hopefully I contributed some intellectual and physiologically-sound discussion rather than create more questions. Going to simul-post on Anaerobic Fitness Website, as well.

Tim

Insight from the essay reveals that today's photo certainly does not disprove the hypothesis that form follows function!

Comment #73 - Posted by: Jim at December 30, 2009 9:26 AM

Geoff, wrong idea?
Read the aticle. The idea is that Jelli looks this good because she is CrossFit, not that she's cheesecake.
Personally, I think she looks hotter when OHSing BW 15x than hitting splits or spread for a sexy pose on beach. I just dig her attitude.

Comment #74 - Posted by: buretto/35yom/6'2"/198# at December 30, 2009 9:40 AM

Cbus A.
I too have been playing around with adding in CFE. Currently, I am following the main site CF WODs as they are posted and doing CFE on Monday, Wednesday and Friday. I do an interval workout on Monday, tempo/time trial on Wednesday and another interval on Friday. This allows me to have CF rest days, CFE rest days and every now and then complete rest days. Theoretically, CFE trains a different energy system than CF, thus having CF rest days on which I do CFE and vice-versa should not have a negative effect on your training/rest. That being said I find there are weeks wherein this all becomes too much and I cut back to CFE 2 times per week (one interval day and one tempo day). Additionally, I find that taking a week off of CFE or taking a cycle off of CF can really help me avoid overtraining.

All that being said, I would slowly add CFE to your training, maybe once a week the first couple of weeks then 2 then 3. Listen to your body and be flexible with your training. For instance, today was supposed to be a tempo day for me but with the 5K row yesterday and the impending holiday (and the resulting gym closing) I decided to do intervals today (lactate ladder).

Hope all this helps.

Comment #75 - Posted by: Dan m at December 30, 2009 9:41 AM

Today I did 5 x5 sets of military presses followed by 10 rounds of deadlifts (about 50% of my max) and 10 burpees at 6 am. It’s now 9:30 am and doing an IF til noon. Will this have a negative effect on muscle gain? I am trying not to lose weight but am trying to gain muscle mass (I’m 56 years old-have lost some muscle mass)and lose BF “love handles”.
Will IF or longer fast after a workout help me reach my goals (gain muscle and lose BF)?

A new topic:

I've really enjoyed watching all the complete games coverage. What a great event and well run too. I had a thought about tie breaking. After the women's couplet when the big cut was made there was a close tie that was broken by the highest placement in any single event. I thought this was a mistake because since they had the same overall score the person with the best score in any one event would also have the lowest average in the other events. This tiebreaking scheme rewards specialization and actually would choose the competitor who is less likely to succeed in the subsequent challenges. I would like to propose that the new tiebreaking scheme be the lowest standard deviation in score which would more closely represent a more well rounded competitor.

Thoughts?

Jenni -- that's one hot photo, friend. Keep up the great work you do in the CrossFit community. We really appreciate it.

A strong, beautiful woman. A couple of interesting articles to make you think. And a video with Kurtis Bowler about lifting heavy stuff. Awesome Rest Day post.

I am fairly new to the Crossfit community and I have a question about variance. I love that the workouts are constantly varied and that variance can include repeating. But why is the schedule always 3 days on and one off? Why not vary that as well? If 3 on and 1 off the best way to train, and why?

Keep up the good work.

Why do I get the feeling from reading the new articles and pictures presented on this website that the Crossfit organization leans to the right of the political spectrum...

The whole CrossFit philosophy is inherently "Right". Work hard, get reward. The law of the harvest in pure form such as exercise or farming cannot be subverted for socialist goals. You reap what you sow.

Question. If I want to follow these wod's and inegrate the endurance wod's do I just follow these on the main site and the wod's on the endurance site. I was a little confused with this statement taken from the endurance site

3+ Hours After Anaerobic Endurance Strength & Conditioning WOD

Is this alluding to the main site wod's. I saw conditioning wod and main site wod listed. And I saw the wod's listed on the endurance site. Is there a a third location? Don't want to miss anything

made up yesterdays 5K row today, still a bit sore from Mondays 5K, and yesterday's snatches.

21:08.8

Which is 1:08 faster than monday's time! ;) No rests in the middle definitely helped. Hip flexors are again bearing the brunt of the soreness, but the lower back is a little bit angry too, probably from me concentrating on all 3 pulls to maximize my efficiency...not sure my back was all that willing to do its share! ah well...

Going skiing for the rest of the week so I made today my "pipe hitter" day.

Box squat (back) 6x2 135-155-175-185-205-225. Trying to integrate some Simmons into my strength work. 11" box, WAY deep for me, that is hard and I was happy to get 225 twice. Started light and worked up, looking for a good working weight, 205 seems safe but challenging for now. Handstands and L-sits between sets. I really like what that did for my squat form.

DL eight heavy singles, 365-385-405-405-405-385-395-395. 6 GHD, 5 BE between each single.

Weighted pullups 45lbs., 3-3-5-5-3.

Happy New Year everyone!

Still getting over that upset stomach thing, but it seems to be passing, albeit slowly. Figured since I'm going out for a week and won't have access to any sort of gym, I did Angie and Jackie today.

Angie:
Pullups - 3:44
Pushups - 4:48
Situps, anchored w/ dumbbells - 4:17
Squats - 2:28
Total time 15:17

Jackie:
1000m row - 3:52
50 thrusters @45lbs - 2:18
30 pullups - 1:05
Total time 7:15

Like #92, I made up the 5K from yesterday - I'm a day behind, but did back squats (3x5), Cleans (5,5,3) and Snatch yesterday (skill work only) and the other 5K the day before.

Decreased my time from 20:35 to 20:17 just by changing my pace from 2:00/500 (and subsequently exhausting around 2750 meters) to a 2:05 pace with a pick-up to about 2:00 at the 3500m mark with additional picks for the two remaining 500m marks. I guess I know my lactate threshold lies somewhere in between a 2:00 and 2:05 pace! New PR - the 20:35 from 2 days ago was a PR by a couple minutes - today was my 3rd 5K row.

Aah! Took some holiday time off for lots of skiing and skating w/ the fam, and what a nice welcome-back picture!

No rest day today though; made up BP WOD from last week. Results posted there.

Comment #97 - Posted by: Chas at December 30, 2009 2:42 PM

Phil, Tim, Dan m - thanks for your thoughts.

I think what I am leaning toward are the following changes...
1. Follow the main site strictly.
2. On the main site "REST" days also take CF Endur. off and make it up on a main site work day.
3. Only do CF Endur. 3 days a week, but perhaps considering consolidating multiple WODs.
4. When appropriate run on a treadmill to ease the wear and tear on the ankles, shins, etc. I have been doing every WOD on concrete outside.

Comment #98 - Posted by: Cbus A at December 30, 2009 2:44 PM

Still confused. What is the difference between anaerobic endurance strength wod and conditioning wod. I want to integrate endurance wod three times per week. But it seems you would integrate this with either anaerobic endurance strength wod or conditioning wod. Where do I find the other wod's beside the main page which I guess is the conditioning wod

thanks for feedback

Comment #99 - Posted by: Dalton at December 30, 2009 2:51 PM

Dalton-
Strength & conditioning is one term. The CFE site follows the CF football format: one workout in the middle like the main site, and another by date over to the right. interval/tempo/time trial WODs are in the middle, and the CFE "anaerobic strength and conditioning workout" is over on the right. It is my understanding that these are met-con and strength workouts which you can do in lieu of main site WODs, or disregard in favor of the main site. dont do both.

I would actually recommend Ultimate MMA conditioning by Joel Jamieson. Although a book for MMA (duh) he gives an excellent overview on the Energy Systems as well as examples of specific methods for bringing up each.

Who finds the economic content that gets posted up sometimes?

I don't always pay attention to the miscellanea at the end of each daily post, but the economic links that go up are of high caliber. As an economics graduate I'm always surprised to get such quality suggestions along with my daily workout, eg. Tyler Cowen talk on Create Your Own Economy.

I'm very impressed.

And for a counterpoint to Friedman, I can recommend Naomi Klein's "The Shock Doctrine" as worthwhile reading.

Two months into Crossfit. Loving it. Used to row at Olympic trials level, twenty years ago. Always stayed in "shape", but moved to endurance sport, as a means to keep off the weight (triathlon, etc.). Workout intensity was slowly dialed down to easy listening.

Enjoying falling off the erg to death metal and taking it one WOD at a time, with daily reminder's of the body's resilience.
