I'm going to redo Cindy! She was my very first crossfit WOD about 3 months ago! This will be fun!

Comment #8 - Posted by: wyatt22 at November 9, 2009 3:26 PM

I liked the video, it had a good perspective on coaching that people need to keep in mind. Though Dave needs to work on managing his cliches.

Comment #9 - Posted by: Richard at November 9, 2009 3:33 PM

This workout kills every time! Love it! To all that dislike crossfit or have a prob with some aspect of it, you can always go work out very, very safely at globo gym! Crossfit is a choice for those of us that like it and CHOOSE to do it. If coach makes money at it great, i for one dont hold that against him. There are so many different programs out there, research them and do the one that makes you happy! Also i would venture that at this point crossfit is bigger than coach (meaning that if they shut down the main site crossfit around the world would continue on!) Any way just my worthless two cents :) Have a great day crossfiters!

16 rounds of Cindy. pushups were hell

Comment #11 - Posted by: Scott Meyers at November 9, 2009 3:41 PM

I have a question reguarding crossfit and college basketball. i have currently been doing crossfit for about 3 years and its the best. i have been recently talking to my coach about crossfit and benifit of it. we got on the subject of squating and he responded by saying squatting heavy weights is bad or your knees etc... i told him the squat in my eye is the most fundamental movement you can do. i am wondering is squatting good for basketball players at the college level. are there any studies out there proving this?

Just a question about the one-legged squats, are they 10 each leg or 5 each leg?

Comment #18 - Posted by: Dan Orozco at November 9, 2009 4:59 PM

#12 Cory, I suppose you could ask coach what data he has to support his claim..

Jerod @ 30, 1-leg squats are unweighted. Pistols technically carry weight, most often 50lb. Goblet, extended, or waiter-style are all fine.

Dave Tate seems to go against the CF grain allot. His comments on getting injured doing things that are of no true benefit can go both ways. On one hand we can arugue that being good at everything is CF and whatever we are doing is helping that cause. The other is things like trashing your hands on dozens of kipping pull ups that will keep you away from top level training and doing dozens of GHD reps that will keep your slow lifts low. I like Tate well enough, but still not sure he is a good fit.

#60 JRock.. Tate has it figured out. I absolutely agree with him.

Like the they say in football, you have to know the difference between playing injured and playing hurt. There is no point in injurying yourself doing, as Tate says, something stupid and careless.

Pushing yourself to the limit is another thing completely.

If Tate is going against the prevailing CF wind, then he is a wise breath of fresh air.

#39- We've all been there, so just from my perspective I'm going to say DEFINITELY listen to your body and take the full days of rest. Jumping into Crossfit can be quite the shock to the body. I'd recommend doing 4-5 days of Crossfit a week until you feel fully capable... then follow the mainsite and take the days off as Rx'ed.

Congratulations just for starting!

Missed 8 days with various work & family responsibilities.. It's been killing me to get back!! Argh! Finally made it today!

Tried to start off with Oct 31 WOD 25/50/75 rounds of sq, puUs, pUs, and sit-ups.. Only made it through the first 2 rounds - 75 of each total - in 19:03:94.. Wow! Doesn't take long to fall off the wagon!

Wasn't satisfied so I moved on to the CrossFit Total and hit PRs across the board:

Back Squat = 340#PR
Shoulder Press = 160#PR
Deadlift = 400#PR

CrossFit Total = 900#
Last time = 785#

So strength is improving, but muscular endurance is not... Knocked down 8 times, Get up 9! The battle continues.

Maybe it is time to go full out with ZONE and PALEO to see how that affects my endurance. Any ideas anyoneÉ

I am finding it hard to believe people that say they are doing 30+ rnds of Cindy......a single round of Cindy with Butterfly Kip pull ups, chest to deck push ups and butt to ball squats takes on average 1 min. Either some of you guys are super human (doubtful) or you aren't doing the WOD properly. Just my two cents.

MY HUMBLE SUGGESTION TO INCREASE YOUR WEAKNESSES IS TO COMPLETE THE WOD.
YOU FINISHING THE 25-50-75 WOD WOULD HELP YOU MORE THAN DOING 66% OF THE WOD AND JUMPING TO ANOTHER ONE.
I THINK YOU WOULD HAVE BEEN SATISFIED LIKE I WAS IF YOU FINISHED THAT WOD. THE 75 ROUND WAS THE KILLER... NICE CFT PR THO.

Comment #116 - Posted by: dan lau at November 10, 2009 8:27 AM

10 minute Cindy
7 rounds plus 5 pullups.

Not sure why so low, I think it's because my pushups were more standard. No snaking up. But took quite a bit of time.

Followed by PTP, on my third week and think I'm getting stronger!

Comment #117 - Posted by: SueAnne/f/49/5'6"/134 at November 10, 2009 8:30 AM

@112,

I think 30 seems crazy high as well (i.e., nearly impossible to achieve with perfect form), but I assure you that one can do 5 butterfly pullups, 10 chest-to-floor pull-ups and 15 ass-to-ankles air squats in less than a minute. The issue that brings question to my mind is sustainability.

My two-cents.

Did 16 about three weeks ago, my first Cindy. Was hoping for 18 this time. Result? Did 21 plus another set of pullups and pushups. Big difference was that I wasn't fading from the squats right around Round #9 or so.

Went and hit the heavy bag for a bit after, then worked on double-unders. Ended the day with a set of weighted (45 lb) pullups.

Thank you, CF. More Kool-aid, please.

I've struggled with shin splints for the past 6 years and finally found a way to keep them from coming back. However it depends what type you have (there are 2 major types of shin splints caused by 2 very separate things. If your experiencing the type that causes pain on the medial portion of the ridge of the shin bone(the tibia) and feels like that bone is practically breaking, it's caused by over use of your calf muscles and not enough stretching. This is usually treated by just increasing the amount of stretching for your calves and letting them rest for several says along with doing some shin-strengthening exercises.

However, if your experiencing shin pain in the muscle that runs along the very anterior part of your shin (the tibialis anterior muscle) and makes you feel like that muscle is going to explode, you have the same issue i did. It's caused by over use of that muscle which causes the muscle to become inflamed. This leads to micro-tearing of the sheath that surrounds that muscle and causes excruciating pain. If your like me, it's become a relentless chronic injury that's made running miserable. However, I found my cure when I read an article about bare-foot running. Running without the "support" of a running shoe puts your foot in it's natural position and allows the weight of your body to be put on the ball of your foot instead of your heal. This prevents overuse of that muscle and is how humans have run for thousands and thousands of years. Funny how these common running injuries have only plagued runners since the creation of supported running shoes, huh?
Now I don't actually run barefoot, I wear the Vibram FiveFingers which mimic running barefoot and give your feet a little protection. Plus you can wear them in a gym where shoes are required. Definitely worth looking in to.
If your interested you could check out the book Born To Run or just look it up barefoot running online to see what it's all about. There's TONS of scientific research supporting running barefoot.

CrossFit Strength Bias: Power clean 1RM 192.5#, 10 lb PR. Attempted 127.5# for 20 reps, only got 17 before my grip failed.

Over the past 3 weeks I've gained about 3 lbs of muscle and 1 lb of fat by doubling the fat intake on my 18 block Zone & Paleo diet. I'm at about 6x fat now, which is almost all sunflower seeds. I'll go back to 3x fat when I hit my weight goal of 185.

Oh and Happy Birthday, Marine Corps.

In honor of the 234th Birthday of our Marine Corps... The Marine Corps Physical Fitness Test (PFT)

Pullups (one set, strict dead hang) 5 points each
Crunches in 2 minutes (anchored) 1 point each
3 mile run 18:00 = 100 points. Subtract 1 point for each increment of 10 seconds over 18:00 (18:01 - 18:10 = 99 points,
18:11 - 18:20 = 98 points, etc.)

For the Marine Corps, 20 pullups, 100 crunches and an 18:00 3 mile time is considered a perfect score(300).

For Crossfit I'd propose no limit on pullups or crunches and adding 2 points to the run score for each 10 second increment faster than 18:00 (17:41-17:50 = 102 points, 17:31 - 17:40 = 104 points, etc.).

Semper Fi and Happy Birthday to all Marines.

It is no longer something where I simply lack the skill, like muscleups, because I have learned most of the skills. Now, my goats are the moves where I just run into a wall. Burpees, for example. They took ten minutes today. Unbelievable. Oh well, under 30 minutes overall next time.

Cindy - 17 rounds

I tried to do this as a Chelsea WOD. At round 10, I ended up needing 1:04 to complete. I then rested until the minute was up and went back at it. I ended up needing two more 'rests'. This is how I got 17 rounds. I hope you understand. That said, does anyone know what a failure is for Chelsea? Would my score for Chelsea be 9 or do you keep going for 30 minutes and record how many times you couldn't make the 'each minute on the minute'? Thanks for the help. BTW, when was the last time Chelsea came up?

This was just as horrible as I predicted. I kept saying before it started “It’s only six minutes” blah, blah, blah. I mean, six minutes of being stabbed in the eye with a red hot poker, is still just six minutes right?

16 rounds, with 2 min to go, kind of lost track of time so wasn't sure if I'd gone over by 3 min or under by 2...

Either way, happy with how I did and how it felt doing it. My kips were ON today. Too bad my hands still got torn up.

Modifications: Switched to lat pulldown when hands broke open for last 2 rounds. Did full regular push ups until 4th round half way through push ups, when I switched to knees because I was down to sets of 2 or 3 at most for regular push ups. Push ups are rough on the ladies...

Comment #454 - Posted by: Clayton 30/6'4/224 at November 11, 2009 11:16 AM

As rx'd, 24 rounds + 5 pullups + 6 pushups (PR).

Previous Cindy was 22 rounds (+5 +9), in May. I had a pretty good pace for the first half of Cindy today. I was 10 rounds at 7.5 minutes, nearly 14 rounds at 10 minutes, and well into the 16th round at minute 12. Things slowed down from there, but I was able to keep at or just under 1 minute per round until completion. My slowdown was mostly b/c I started taking some short NWOG breaks ("no work, only gasping") at the end of rounds. Was trying to pace a little and keep Pukie away.

Pullups and squats unbroken. I had to start breaking pushup sets sooner this time (round 10 or so), most likely due to the faster pace of rounds (and pushups are still a weakness for me). Did pushups in sets of 6-4 or 6-2-2 in later rounds. Used butterfly kips for pullups - rhythm off initially, not a big deal, but maybe should have done a few more in warmup.

Cindy is a tough one for me - it seems to get hard around minute 3, and never lets up. Suckfest.

@453 - I find that push-ups are often a weak event for CrossFitters - just the opposite for me - my last PT test (2 weeks ago) I knocked out 85 in a minute - totaling 95 before deciding to save something for the sit-ups/run - stopping at about 1:15. I like any CrossFit workout that includes push-ups, as I feel it gives me an advantage.

PR as Rx'd today - last time (August 25 - also first Cindy) was 18 + 5 pull-ups + 8 push-ups. This time it was 20 + 5 pull-ups - all exercises were unbroken.

I broke the 1 per minute mark!

I'm impressed, I've only started CF about a week ago and I'm already seeing some great improvements in my stamina. I was doing strict pull-ups, military style push-ups and my squats were down to 12 inch's from the ground (squats were the hardest). Next time I'm thinking to add an exercise to this routine.
Thanks CF for all the suffering ;-)
I love it

As Rx: Cindy 31 rounds complete (PR by one full round)
I haven't done Cindy in a really long time... I have been doing Mary instead, and was going to do that tonight, but when I started warming up and practicing my pistols, my right knee really felt a lot of pain, so I decided to do the squats instead. I wasn't sooo mentally into it, but just kept on trying to push. good results... a PR by a full round.
Next time will be Mary though. sets of 15 pullups really tax me... 5's are nothing. I was glad to go unbroken with all sets and at the last few rounds I would stop at plank position for a second or two after about 5-6 pushups and then finish up. Same with squats over the last few rounds.

I meant to also add that I think that one reason I wasn't too pumped was that I was pretty sore from my last WOD of the filthy 50. I got a nice PR there too so I wasn't too sure I'd get a great result, but happy with my second PR and I'm sure I'll be a bit sore tomorrow.

Motored through these. Was impressed with my ability to complete 5 pull-ups without breaking them up over 8 rounds. Form on squats is also getting much better! Felt like I was going to puke for about a half-hour afterwards...kept burping up the chicken salad I had for lunch (yuck!).

Good job pushing at end. Squats not too bad. Faster pace w/break about 1/2 way on 1st 3/4 of rounds. Slow & steady on last ones. Easier to transition on later rounds, but still need to work on pace. PU felt good. Good height. Pushups tough but unbroken.
