Woohoo on the mainsite! this WOD is gonna be killer! 3.2.1. GO!
filthy
i'm still waiting for the wod that begins,
"as many reps as you can until you puke: (such and such)"
Some buddies and I did FGB yesterday in the Wooden Center courtyard at UCLA where this photo was taken ... we were throwing med balls off the wall
Thats what you get for throwing your balls against the wall.
I think this WOD usually comes up on Sundays. Or at least I tend to do this WOD on Sundays... one of the two.
Finally will do this one as Rx'ed! Scared but excited :)
Herm,
As rx'd huh? The shoulder must be feeling better. Get some!!!!
funny how we did FBG right after this pic was taken
Hi Jim!
Yeah, my shoulders can finally do shoulder presses and overhead squats with very little complaints. Front squats too! I'm a happy camper.
That would be a decent sign to put in a CrossFit gym: just hang it 10 feet up and use it as target practice.
My YMCA just put up some new signs--"Please do not drop the weights" They ought to just say what they really mean--"Please use the machines only"
Yeah, UCLA won't even let me move take my shirt or take my camera into the gym anymore. Some people just don't know what crossfit is about.
OH LORD! Why have you forsaken me! I went so hard on Friday that my back is killin me. Here it is 8:45 on Saturday night and I think I'm gonna lose sleep between the sore back and anticipation of my meeting with Pukie in the A.M.(who wouldve thought Kool-Aid would hurt so bad LOL) Gonna try for sub 28:00 on this and hope I have enough in the tank for my run afterwards. 3,2,1...HEEEEEERS PUKIE!
I was wondering is the sign is at the 10' line?
Strangely enough, the same sign is on the wall at the NSA Bahrain gym.... although I can undersand why. Those fans looked a little worse for wear, and the walls were all mirrors (go figure).
Jump rope just came in! looking to do this one as rx'd for the first time!
dam it my GHD haven't made it to the box yet.
I did this today, and felt pretty good, thinking my 19:50 compared pretty well to Speal's 19:00. Unfortunately, he did that in 2006. On the CrossFit Games athlete profile page, it says he's done a 14:01. Just in case anybody starts getting a big head.
J-Bird- haven't seen you post in a while. Good to have you back :)
Goat and I are diggin' the KB cert. I feel like my spine cracked back into place ten times over. Finally learned TGUs. Wow- I can't wait to get my parents to do those. I can imagine my dad saying the likelihood that he will be able to do one of those is the same as the likelihood the Jets get to the Super Bowl LOL
Frat- git the filthy fifty!
I just did a turkish get up with my cat. No, seriously.
As for religion, I support any one which will allow me to sacrifice people and eat their flesh with almond butter.
Yes, people-eating is paleo.
Again J-Bird my post to you got held. Aw nuts. How come Goat can post ridiculous stuff like that turkish get up (which he really did, as well as cat swings) and I get held?
lmfao at the picture. I GO TO UCLA. That sign is in the courtyard. And right under the sign is a rack of medicine balls.
Tried this today:
400 meters of burpees
400 meters walking with 1 pood kb overhead
400 meters of lunges
400 meters "run"
51:50
I'm in the army and were doing some training in the "field" this month... We have been doing CF for pt and it's been pretty amazing/eye opening to see where I used to be... Some people hate it and complain the whole time, the a few of us are really pushing ourselves and I think the Command has taken note... Finally, all our cf efforts have not been in vain! Fingers crossed we will do cf more regularly for pt so I'm not spending every free moment working out... 210 pullups yesterday and only 2 of us finished then group races tonight... It was sick
this WOD seemed reasonable until i kept reading.. and reading.. and reading..
what to sub with if i don't have a 20# MB?
My question is: How can you compare a person with the expertise and knowledge that Greg Glassman self proclaims, to a person who spends $1000.00 to attend a level 1 cert., then decides to open a box and post a WOD? It seems to me that Greg Glassman's crossfit.com should be considered the only workout of the day. Any other workout is simply an imitation and should not be considered crossfit. Going to an affiliate and doing whatever workout they have posted discredits anything that Coach Greg Glassman has created. How many out of the top ten crossfit games competitors actually follow the main site WODS?
21:44 not RX'ed.
Double Unders were Tuck Jumps due to injury.
M/5'11"/29/172lbs.
I am so excited. I am finally starting to be able to do the WODs AsRx. I did Friday's WOD with 55lbs with is 10lbs more than some conseder the female weight. The 20lb wall ball shots will give me some trouble. Im looking forward to it.
f/27/5'2"/120lbs
34:08 Ouch! & only finished 20 knees to elbows (1st time).
Scaled: 35 pound push press and 16 pound wall ball.
Filthy!!!
Rest day on Sunday, i'll hit this on Monday.
Friday wod: Pwr Snatches and push ups 16,5 rounds
Today wod: Trail run (very hilly!!)7k
GOD TO KNOW HERM'S SHOUDERS ARE BACK, NOW STEP BACK AND LET THIS FIREBREATHER BROTHER MAKE SOME PR'S, GO BRO!!!
PROPS TO DA FRAT!!!!

The "standard" substitute for Wall Ball is either dumbbell or barbell thrusters. Since you can't (or shouldn't, anyway) actually throw the dumbells in the air, use about twice the specified ball weight (40 lbs or so instead of 20) and do them as explosively as possible . . . but it's still quite different.
How many throws with a 20 lb medicine ball to take the wall down? Sounds like a workout to me.
'Post time and number of throws to comments.'
Or... with a continuously running clock, wall ball shots against the wall until campus police arrive.
Whoever has the lowest number of reps must continue until tased, all other athletes can stand back and feign ignorance.
I did 21 deadlifts x 225 lbs in 25.5 seconds, followed by Grace (power cleans) in 2:17 today.
Herm, I think we're both getting back to it.
awesome photo. thats a lot of 50's
I had a feeling that this was about to come up. I haven't done Filthy 50 in over six months. I am looking to DESTROY that first attempt!
I like the WOD progressions the past few cycles...heavy strength, BW metcon, strength metcon, long "wood-chipper" WOD. I predict some serious core work tomorrow.
I did the puppy version (filthy 20s) and came in at 6.26. I'm probably ready for pack... :P
The Movement and Mobility Cert with Kelly Starett was top notch! Raising the bar for trainers everywhere.
26:50
subbed: homemade MB swings ~10kg, toes to rings
Got 8 cycles of mainsite WODs before christmas break. Good start!

Died at the Knees to Elbows and since I can't throw a ball at the wall in my gym, I tossed the 20lb medicine ball roughly 5' above my head and caught it. Double Unders are insane, ended up doing 1 double under then 1 single under etc, only counted the double unders so yeah 100+ skips...
Comments?
If any UCLA students happens to read this, I'm in the process of starting a UCLA CrossFit club and am compiling a list of interested members. Send me an email!
I'm here at N. Il. U. I'd like some people to Crossfit with, too.
nickmooregot33@yahoo.com
Rec center is limited in equipment, so I have to box jump outside at a waiting bench, thrusters for wall balls, and no kettlebells, but I make do, I guess.
Here's a little WOD I and a buddy of mine came up with when neither of us had access to the C2.
As many rounds as it takes for time:
Find a rower. Take it. Run until you get away.
Never actually tried it...
The Famous Filthy Fifty! Nice! one of my favorite workouts since i started crossfit! sweet!
did something different today as my knee is still crook
AMRAP 20 mins
5x40kg strict press
10x60kg bench press
15x40kg push press
20xdips
4 rounds even. Holy triceps - those dips are killers.
back again Hall?
still not causing trouble? Who are you to decide what is crossfit and what isn't?
you are the same person causing trouble last week. are you just a bitter person or do you have a vested interest in trying to destabilise this free program that does so much for so many?
Stupid knee, because of that I could not do the wall ball or the burpees. If I known it was gonna cause me problems i would have found a scaled work on those two. oh well. 26:21 for the first time doing this minus the two areas i didnt cover. Guess better luck next time!
Subbed wallballs for 37.4 lbs dumbbell.

Back from a 3 week vacation in South America and this is my return to CrossFit WOD! Yay.
Hall,
Your question intrigued me so I read all of the comments from crossfiters that gave answers to your question yesterday. I think the people who answered your question yesterday did a thorough job of answering your question.
In summation of answers given yesterday.
1. some boxes do not have all the necessary equipment to do the mainsite every time. So they have to augment the WOD's
2. Some boxes have emphasis on certain things like strength or endurance or combat or have clientel that are at a different level or injured so they may have a varied WOD schedule or different excercises.
3. Greg Glassman has explained the method to the crossfit madness in below article so others could make their own workouts. So he has already imparted the knowledge for others to take advantage of.
http://journal.crossfit.com/2003/02/theoretical-template-for-cross.tpl
4. If you feel strongly about it, just stick to the Mainsite WOD it has been going strong for a number of years and has worked for me. If you do not believe a particular affiliate has the knowledge or skill to be a trainer, do not follow their training. with 1500+(?) affiliates there are bound to be some boxes that are underprepared to provide what it takes to forge elite fitness.
There may have been a few more points I missed and the individuals who responded yesterday likely said it better than me, but that answered what I was wondering.
good luck on the filthy 50.
Nick in sydney- you called it.
hall = parker = troll
:P
Hope your knee is on the mend
Oh my forearms are battered from KB snatches. Day 2 with Martone- can't wait :)

Sunday musings...
1) Beware the man who dreams with his eyes open.
2) Germany. Does anyone else find it odd that the fact that Germany and Germans seem so unified is headline worthy? I wasn't around for any of it, but I think I read somewhere that some version of a unified Germany had been around for a year or two prior to the Berlin Wall. Just sayin...
3) Aristotle. "We are what we repeatedly do. Excellence, then, is not an act, it is a habit." I like this very much; feels like Crossfit to me.
4) Vocabulary. Li'l Bingo, his GF, Mrs. Bingo and I were sorta watching TV last night. Some nonsense teen show, Degrassi something or other. Anyway, a character asked "are you in grade 9?" Grade 9? Who talks like that? This is a teen show. Does the writer even KNOW a teenager?
In the new movie "Precious" the main character visits the home of a friend. "They talk like people in TV shows I don't watch" is her reaction when she listens to her hosts in conversation. We teasingly warned Li'l Bingo's GF that if she sticks around we will start correcting her English, something for which we are rather (in)famous among the friends of the Bingo progeny. It's an important lesson, that people will form an impression based on HOW you speak, as well as on what you say.
How you say something is also a way to express both the importance of what you say, as well as a way to express your respect for your audience. In my day job I talk to dozens of people from all walks of life every day. My world is rather technical, a world with a special language all its own that is shared by both the professionals and those who work for them. People who do what I do have at least 12 years of post-secondary education; we tend to have rather impressive working vocabularies, and our street-edges tend to have been sanded down by academic exposure.
It's important for me, us, to speak in a manner that maximizes the transfer of the 'what we are saying' by concentrating on the 'how we say it'. Before speaking it's important to "hear" what I am about to say as if I was the audience. Not me, but whoever is in front of me, about to be my audience. It is a measure of respect for one's audience to use that part of your working vocabulary that works best for the audience.
Speak as if you are one of the characters in a TV show that your audience might watch.
5) Tipping point. Are you ever aware of the exact point when you KNOW you will complete the WOD? Like today, the "Filthy Fifty"--the last time you did it, that point where you knew you would finish. Going in I usually take this for granted, but on some days, when I don't feel so great, I'm a little tired, stressed, over-trained and under recovered. You know, those days when you plan to cut it short just to say you showed up.
I had one of those days with "Nancy" last week. After my CFSB I was toast. "I'll do three rounds. Yeah. That's the ticket. Three rounds, short and sweet, CFSB." But it just didn't feel right. That whole "you can be a pu$$y" thing and all.
Round one I'm good. Round two and I'm hurting, as expected. "Whew...man...thank G_D only one more round." Round 3 run...oh boy this stinks..."you can be a pu$$y"...and then, 300M in, it hits. I can finish. I can do it all. I just need to WILL it. Do you ever get this?
What gets you through? Who gets you through? "You can be a pu$$y" isn't enough for me. Round 3 OHS it's the "Heroes", round 4 run the active duty SEALs. Round 4 OHS it's Kyle Maynard, and round 5 run my friend Ken, battling a terrible illness with a strength and grace that leaves me awestruck.
Round 5 OHS it's "Lovely Daughter", my beautiful and brave child, among the toughest most courageous people I know, willing herself to win her battle every day. I finish. I win. Nowhere near a PR, but I win because I got to that point and I kept going.
Do you ever know you are at that particular point, in a WOD or, indeed, in life? How do you know you are there? What, or who inspires you to the finish line?
I'll see you next week...

subbed 20 pound DB thrusters for wallball

27:13, only had a 10# medicine ball.
That was one awesome punch last night that Fedor threw. Have you ever see a bigger punch than that?

Re to Comment #57:
Bingo, I agree. The trait of succinctness is valued highly in effective written and verbal communication, too.
43 min as rx'd. Exactly the same as last time.
So for the longest time i felt WAY out of my league when my last filthy fifty time was somewhere around 50 minutes. Then just today i realized I was doing it wrong. regular pull-ups in stead of jumping... and i thought knees to elbows were one rep = left elbow/ right elbow, and last but not least... 50 steps per leg.... morale of the story... Im hoping to get time more around par today... wish me luck!

Sorry Pony but its been a long 2 weeks,I have stayed faithfull to the WODs as always but just havent posted much, unless its been really late. Great to see your doin good though. It's playoff time in pop warner football and I'm a coach so this time of year is usually pretty hectic, that is until our boys lost a heart breaker in the regionals yesterday. It was my last year to coach so it was nice to go out in a blaze of glory but to see those boys(all of them from 11 to 13) cryin their eyes out just ripped me apart. Oh yeah Bingo as always love havin my coffe and reading the musings, (my sunday paper)

Bingo, I just have to say that of course my children get me through alot of the time, as well as my brothers and sisters in arms, but when it's really, really bad, it's my Momma. 10 years ago I lost her to cancer and the whole time she was sick she had this additude of she wasnt dying, she was LIVING with cancer. The woman never gave up. So when life throws me that hard curve, I think of how she never gave up and if at that moment I died, would I be able to face her and say I never gave up either? Just thought I'd share my motivator with you bud.

Comment #57 - Posted by: bingo
D, awesome question. For me, it's very simple. I love the motto "Never quit". During the course of self-doubt in the heat of the moment, I ask myself if it's worth the days and weeks of mental anguish, knowing that I didn't put my best effort out there. I try to do the right thing, no matter what I'm doing or how difficult my mind perceives it to be. Usually my brain perceives something uncomfortable to be life-threatening, and that's when pain can get in the way of good performance.
Obviously, there are days and weeks in which I scale the intensity and do not use 100% effort, but this is pre-determined. When I'm truly committed to putting out my best effort, "You can be a pu**y" is not an option, due to the aftermath of being a pu**y. It's tough to look in the mirror the next few days!
#25 - Hall
I totally agree with you and have been saying the same thing for awhile now. I have only seen a few affiliates (generally, the boxes that have been in existence since the early days) that have good programs. I have mostly seen, in the South Florida area anyway, new boxes that open with the most ridiculous WODs. My point is that, if you are a new box, why not stay with the main site WOD until you have more experience with training a diverse client base? Make adjustments as necessary for things like a lack of equipment, injuries, fitness levels, etc. - which is what you should be doing anyway!
The way I see it, any bonehead can make up a WOD that will smoke the Pee out of you and call it training. Very few people have the education and understanding (myself EXcluded) of Crossfit programming to actually make it effective, in the way that the main site does. I will continue to adamantely refuse to give somebody my hard-earned money to provide me with workouts and equipment that are Crossfit-like, but not really.
I think that Mr. Glassman has provided THE standard for measuring and acheiving REAL fitness, so I choose to follow his plan. Everyone is free to do their own thing but, as the saying goes, "if it ain't broke, don't fix it".
Good luck to you - and don't be afraid to voice you opinion - even when it goes against the grain.
M/6'1''/191.
As Rxd except knees to elbows I only complete 10 and then I performed 40 knee raises. I really need to study up on my form.

Why would you sub situps for back extensions if they don't work the same muscles? Why didn't you choose good mornings or superman? Just curious.
...and my WOD post got held up...again
#84, yes this is the Filthy Fifty.
The nutrition video is great! I know at least 10 people whose lives could be changed by this video. They are counting calories, and don't understand why they can't lose weight, even on a "starvation" diet.

I have a question reguarding crossfit and college basketball. i have currently been doing crossfit for about 3 years and its the best. i have been recently talking to my coach about crossfit and benifit of it. we got on the subject of squating and he responded by saying squatting heavy weights is bad or your knees etc... i told him the squat in my eye is the most fundamental movement you can do. i am wondering is squatting good for basketball players at the college level. are there any studies out there proving this?

Jeez, Bingo, lighten up, our Canadian friends provided insight into a point that you brought up in your weekly filibuster. Sorry, but I expect a respected elder statesman of CrossFit to act like something other than a thin-skinned I'm-always-a-winner-because-I-CrossFit-on-Ma-and-Pa's-Visa-Card punk. Our community already has an excess of those types...which doesn't do much for company credibility at all. Jebus criminy.

This one kicked my butt!! I did all as rx'd up to the wall ball shots. Just carrying the ball, my arms were shaking from exhaustion! Maybe I should have scaled the kettle swings or push presses, but I hit the wall at the wall ball shots. I decided not to push to injury on this one. Well, I was smiling when I typed my post, and I THOUGHT I was rather light-hearted when I hit "post". Heck, I guess I forgot to put that little emoticon, you know, ;=) to let our friends from up north know it was all friendly.
But really, in light of it being an American watching the show not knowing it was Canadian, and the additional quote from "Precious" illustrating the same phenomenon, my question is appropriate, don't you think? Does the fact that the show is Canadian and that they do, indeed, say "grade 9" in Canada (who knew?! (=; ) nullify my eventual point? Chez Bingo we often say "never let the facts interfere with a good story," always with a smile and with tongue jammed in cheek. Maybe I could have noted that, just before the ;=).
I may be a punk for sure, but I've gone waaaayyy further out of my way to be insulting and confrontational (see discussions of the F-bomb, for example), but my question was not in the least meant to be anything edgy, confrontational, or panties in a bunch hurt at all.
I don't think my Sunday musings could ever be characterized as succinct, which might be your point @0810, eh? Or would that be somewhat "thin-skinned" of me"? I'm good either way. I'm on record here quite often admitting that my Sunday "filibusters" are the epitome of "FRAT" posts.

Knees to elbows were a bear. Did the first 10 unbroken, then sets of 5. Touched knees to elbows on each rep. Had a real emotional experience at about the burpees and wanted to quit. Wall Balls and Burpees are still major time killers here...especially burpees. Didn't do as well as i normally do for DUs either, they got broken into 10s rather than straight through, wasted some seconds there.

To all of those still reading: form check. I did a few things differently and with better ROM. I'm wondering if I would have PR'ed if I used my old school ROM standards. I don't doubt it, I would have. Before today I was using a 22 inch box, the last portion of the swings ROM was absent, and burpees were not done to a specified target above max reach.

Time 24:22
last time I did this it was at home no timer no PP, thrusters with 30lbs for wall ball. Last time was a mess.
I hate wall ball, I hit wallball at the 16 min mark, it took me 4 min to do wall ball. I wanted to quite there on the first set of 10, but you know that wasn't happening, I'll take a slow time then a quite. I took my time and focused through it. DU's were ok, plenty of singles but I got 11 in a row, and some other chunks. I was just tire with them at the end. Looking forward to the 5k tomarrow.
Ugh, the burpees are horrible! I love Crossfit more every day that I do it.....last time we did this workout, I finished in slightly over 41, today was a hair over 31! I can't say enough about these workouts. Looking forward and dreading the next time we are tortured with the "Filthy 50."

Absolutely died on burpees...50 burpees took me almost 4 minutes, need to cut that down! And I suck at 2unders can't do more than about 2 or 3 in a row (which also kills my time).
Just starting out and buying equipment as I go, so I was wondering? Whats the most common kettlebell weight used in WOD's.
I had to change up my WO this week due to my son's last football game. My son, my wife and I ran a fitness trail in a park in Cary, NC on Saturday. It is 13 stations over 1.9 miles. I have adapted many of the stations to emulate CF exercises and some of the stations we do multiple exercises. Anyway, it always kicks our asses so when the 50's came up for today, I knew I was going to be fatigued. I did my 50's up to push presses when I hit the wall. I hate it when Pukie is hiding around the corner. :P

What is Crossfit happiness? "Crossfit happiness is: when doing the Filthy Fifty, as you get through with wall ball, you realize that you're far enough ahead of your pace, that you know you will PR, so long as you don't puke or pass out during burpees."
This was surprising - I was not really setting out to PR, and I think I was right on pace through K2E (maybe a little ahead). For some reason though, I flew through push press. And wall ball went much better than last time. When I got to burpees, I felt as though I had maybe pushed too hard - even the first set was sucking bad. But I just put the blinders on and tried to push through. Burpee form was awful. Wiped by the time I got to DUs - fortunately, these aren't more difficult for me when I'm tired. In some ways, they seem easier.

Started with Pack (35reps), but on #23 of the box jump I about coughed up a lung, so I had to scale down to Puppies. I guess I still don't have my lungs back - far from it. Last week's flu really took it out of me (I haven't attempted a wod since last Monday). By the end, I was really ready to be done.

Worked out alone. Felt hard today. Thought I would try the women’s weights for the first time (I’ve always done men’s Rx)…that only made it worse. It felt just as bad as the men’s weights. Spent a LOT of time resting. Took me a minute longer than my old PR at the men’s Rx.

only thing subbed was 14lb medicine ball. Heaviest I had. Heart was hurting during jumping pull ups. Not sure what was going on there. Really wanted to do this workout. Had to wait two days. Took a deflected slap shot in the face playing hockey and face swelled up with black eyes. Still got the black eyes, but really wanted to work out. Got a lot of globo stares hehe. I was at 19:43 after my 10th rep on the burpees. Just shows how much longer those and the DU's took. Still can't do DU's one after antoher. Had to do every second or third jump cant remember.
37 minutes with some time explaining what CrossFit was to an interested observer. The kool-aid is good.
My legs started twitching after the box jumps and lunges, I wonder if there's a nutritional deficiency.

I still don't have a 20lb ball so I sub'd the 20 lb dumbell thrusters, but REALLY exploded up onto my toes into a mini jump up.
GREAT workout... finally had a little of the intesity that I was going for... it's been a little sub excellent intensity the past few WODs.

Did everything faster than my last time, but didn't do burpees or double unders. Just didn't have any energy this day.
Got to that point at about 22 minutes. Only had 25# dumbbells available, so those were used in some form for all the stuff that need equipment.
32 minutes (possibly an all-time worst for me...)
This is a wake-up call; I need to get on the stick!
subbed ~18 inch box
Jumping pull-ups (stood on bench)
Subbed 35lbs dumb bells
Subbed 40 lbs dumb bell thrusters

instead of NE did leg raises on leg raise apparatus
then did DU before Burpees.
Burpees and wall ball still my biggest enemy. Was averaging about 6 minutes per two exercises until I hit WB and Burpees. Then it took another 16 minutes to do the last three ;-(
Better than my first time with this one. Last time I did not do all the exercises and it took me 40+ minutes. Crossfit works!
34 year old male 199 lbs.
Did this for the first time RX'D and added some serious time, not happy. Last time was 37 something....today 45:15. Double unders, burpees and knees to elbows really slowed me down.

killing my timers on the knees to elbows. It takes me all of five minutes to do them and then I have to catch up through the whole rest of it until I hit my brick wall after the burpees. Frustrated today. Didi 20 double unders and 80 singles to finish, so close, but I was dying.

DAMN! I cannot find my old time for this one, it must have been when I was too nervous to post times, but I know I killed that old time today. Not to mention I did all as Rx'ed today! Great workout!

26:05 Knees to elbows and burpees wiped me out. I have only been doing Crossfit for two weeks though. Did I get knees to elbows right? I did not touch the floor, and I straightened out before every rep, if that makes sense. Are you allowed to put a kip into the movement?
34:09 45lb thrusters instead of wallballs...
45:10 I subbed a 15lb. mb since that was the biggest I could get my hands on. I was almost vomiting on the burpees and only completed 25 didn't make to the double unders and forgot somehow to write down the walking lunges. So 7 1/2 out of 10 is what I ended up with...I'm having a great time none of the less!
