With a continuously running clock do one pull-up the first minute, two pull-ups the second minute, three pull-ups the third minute... continuing as long as you are able.
Use as many sets each minute as needed.
Post number of minutes completed to comments.

This will hurt, good luck!
Thinking out loud here:
1st 5 rounds: 40# weighted
2nd 5 rounds: 20# weighted
Until failure: kipping
haha nice and this is just for reps right? no additional weight?
old pr is 15, gonna beast it tomorrow.
I did 40 Pull-Ups in a row yesterday! Not a PR but my hands are getting stronger! No rips.
Haven't done this one in a long, long time. It's an awesome WOD.
this seems like its going to end a lot faster than i would predict.
Ah! My hands are still skinless, since the 150 pull-ups from helloween... no pain no gain.
Can't Wait its going to be a long long day
Are you allowed to let go of the bar in the middle of your set, or is it a max reps type deal?
I'm still sore from the wod on halloween. pullups are fun though, and i didn't peel my hands off saturday, so its all good.
my picture made it up here: I am way too excited; thanks crossfit!
Will do it like Herm #4. As Chris #8 says, the end might come sooner than I think. Shooting for 12.
what kind of grip are you supposed to use? underhand, wide, palms in, palms away, neutral, palms sideways? so many! Thanks.
Herm- that looks interesting
Bingo- I just read your two rest day articles. My doctor was a nurse before she was a doctor. She believes that was a very important part of her education on how to and how not to treat a patient.
The root cause is interesting and I'm sure right on target.
Good thoughts. Keep them coming.
Shooting for 17. Got 16+14 pullups last time

So glad to be back in the swing of things.
Shooting for 18 tomorrow. Ill let you know how it goes.
I so ready for this WOD..I will do my best =)
Oh I did eadlift 220 today WHOOP WHOOP
I will do my best..tomorrow...oh by the way I deadlift 220 today WHOOP WHOOP
Question... So you do 1 pull up.. wait till the end of that minute... then do 2 in the second minute... then 3...? So you do them all in that minute?
Thanks
Jerod #28. you are correct. you do 1 pull up the 1st minute, 2 pull ups the 2nd minute, 3 pull ups 3rd minute.... etc.
#28 yeah you do however many pullups that minute is. 1 pullup in the 1st min, 2 pullups in the 2nd min, 3 in the 3rd and so on.
"Death by Pull Ups" - can't wait! Gonna do strict pull ups until max, then go into kips.
Hopin for 10 rounds.. still horrible at pullups.. i do strict form though not kipping
But i love crossfit!!!!!!!!!
This will help me alot for VMI
11: it says use as many sets as needed. this means you can start and stop, as long as you're doing all the reps required each minute.
14: do them however you want.
going for at least 10 mintues
To 14 with kit on.

Great, I decided to do half an Angie yesterday and did pullups on a thick bar, so my hands are a little sore. This WOD is gonna leave a scar.
23 / M / 5'9" / 130lb
Made it 12 rounds plus 5 last time, but I've been sick and havn't been training many pull-ups; I'm not expecting too much. I managed not to destroy my hands on Halloween, but I'm already kissing them goodbye tonight.
#4~ ANIMAL!!
One of my favorite WOD'S. Must wait until I'm off the shelf with my right shoulder...I'm not so good at being patient..HERM, HELP! :)
Beating my PR of 21 rounds will have to wait!
I also like this work-out. I like that its been adapted to other exercises. I even do a variant for max lifts where it's 1 minute to add 10 pounds and lift it (got that idea off the crossfit games where guys were getting PR's while lifting progressions of 10 pounds every 30 secs).
For this work-out I usually go kipping, then on the round I can't make the full number, I rest a minute then start at that same number of Jumping pull-ups on a bar that's about a foot above my head. NO NEGATIVES on the jumping though.
Useful for when I couldn't get above round 7 or 8 with just kipping.
Samuel #32,
I tend to disagree with doing dead hangs on this WOD. Sure you can do that, but I don't think you get the max output that you would if you kip. I'm sure you hear a lot of crap, especially in military or semi-military settings about the kip being wrong, but that's a misnomer. Having a good kip and doing a lot of pull-ups whilst kipping will increase your dead hang pull ups. As a matter of fact, I will guarantee that your workout will be a thousand times easier doing this with dead hangs. When you do go to that military environment, where you can't kip, you have to have the discipline not to kip. Should be no prob for a crossfitter. Challenge yourself Keydet!
#4 that sounds like a great Idea!
I have never done this WOD, we will see tomorow morning.. i bet is going to be fun..
got to six, could only do three in the seventh minute doing deadhangs
So just to be clear. The first minute will only be a total of 1 pullup. With that said, the 10th round will be 10 pullups and so on.... OR is it as many sets of 1 as you can do in the first round and as many sets of 2 you can do in the 2nd round, as many sets of 10 in the 10th round, etc... I am confused, someone please explain in detail.
Thankyou
Great pic! Did he make it??!!
I have been doing this a little over a month now. I have noticed a vast improvement in my body from this program. I started out being only able to do about 3 Pull ups. Now up to about 12. I am glad I found out about this program it suits me perfectly. Looking forward to my APFT (Army Physical Fitness Test) to see if it has improved me any.
Hey all I am new to cross fit. I am experienced in working out and know the exercises but I am still exploring this cross fit website to get a better idea of what I am supposed to be doing. Is this pull up WOD supposed to be accompanied by cardio or is the WOD enough?
To clear it up:
minute 1: 1 pullup rest
minute 5: 5 pullups rest
minute 15: 15 pullups...rest
can't do 15? You have a minute and as many sets as needed until you can't get the required number of pullups for that particular minute.
re:#49 The WOD is the main workout, but you should do some supplemental work if needed. I usually focus on my weaknesses or practice skills that are lacking. Handstands, 1/4mi speed, double under jumping etc. You could do a round of cardio if you want it to be a more rounded workout, but remember later in the week there will probably be some kind of terrible metcon workout that will leave you gasping for air. LOL thats my $.02
Still scaling the WODs as I am new to Crossfit and working out at a mega-chain gym; although I went to a local box for an 8-session Crossfit On-Ramp course. Weird looks when I 'drop' the 45-pound bar or do KB with dumbbells
Suggestion - link the WOD workouts to videos showing how it is done.
Amazing the progress I have made. Two-months ago a pull-up was a challenge. Today I can easily do 10 strict hanging pull-ups
The wife is noticing the positive physique difference occurring but accuses me of joining a Crossfit/Zone cult while she complains about her lack of progress, even though we workout together. I do my scaled WODs and she does the treadmill/machine thing.
Funny - Marriage has helped me understand the Al Bundy's behavior on "Married with Children" (grin).

God I love this WOD! :D

I can't believe hat I did 21+15 (total 246) last time. Maybe yesterdays indoor climbing, multiple pitches between 5.10 and 5.11, took more out of me than I had thought.
I gained about 4 kg since I started doing CrossFit three years ago. Both my weight lifting and my gymnastic exercises improved, but I guess at a certain point, adding more mass makes the gymnastic exercises so much harder that overall benefits will cease. Any opinions on that?

Stick with the deadhang pull-ups. It was my experience that the kip means zero in a military training enviroment. If you don't believe me turn around at the pull-up bar and ask your Black Hat or TAC SGT if you can kip. Your question will be quickly answered. Its been sometime since I darkened the doors of the "Institute", but rest assured at no time during your VMI years will a kipping pull-up be excepted. Save the kip for your off duty PT.

Sam #32, I have to agree with Spence '92: If you have to take a physical apptitude test inside the first days at VMI, they will most definitely assess your dead hang pull-ups because they are one--easy to measure (simple standards) and two--that's all they've known since God knows when. I'm not a VMI alum, but if it's like the other Academies, there will be a strong and active XFit presence inside the school once you get there, but you may still have to abide by some old-school testing and evaluation standards.
I pulled dead hangs for a year of preparation at the USMA prep school and then smoked them out on our first or second day at West Point in their PT apptitude test, along with a kneeling basketball throw, a 40 yd dash, and a standing broad jump (I think). Not very relevant in today's terms, but one--the standards were easily measured and two--it'd been done like that since Patton trod the halls there.
Cross-Train and pull your ass off on the day of the test. When your adrenaline is firing and you leverage your XFIT endurance, strength, and mental foucs, you'll amaze yourself AND the scorers.
Best of luck. 3,2,1,...GO!

I decided to take the last cycle off in an effort to get some extended recovery and come back strong. I decided to test it with max rep pull ups and HSPU. Yesterday I did 40 unbroken pull ups (PR was 35) and did 16 unbroken HSPU (PR was 12) so I was pretty pleased with it. My question is how often do you guys try to take extra rest like that and do you pre-plan built in extended periods of rest?

# 32... Idk your reason for not doing kipping pull ups, and that's totally fine if you don't want to do them, but If it because you want to be able to do more dead hangs. I say don't take kipping pull ups out of your training regimen. Here is why, I was a Marine and in the Marines we test Dead Hangs as part of our physical fitness test, and I for the life of me could never get to 20 dead hang pull ups. Well I started doing CrossFit and was constantly doing kipping pull-ups, and hardly any dead hangs, then after about 6 months I took my PT Test and got to 20 with ease I was ready to do more just to show off but no one really cared but me. All my buddies were pretty surprised and now some of them do CrossFit. Sorry for being wordy. Just Thought I would share. Good Luck

15 rounds flat. I made the last one for before the start of the next round. Probably could have gotten some extra ones if I would have let myself recover a little bit into the 16th round before starting again. A strategy I'm going to keep in mind for the next time this WOD comes up. Still need a lot of work on my kipping pull-ups. The energy I spent trying to control an "out of control kipping pu" may have been counter productive.

HOT TIP!!!! Appropriate day for it! I used to tear my hands a lot on high rep pull up days. I have always used a little larger bar, 1 3/4", for pullups that just seems more comfortable for me. That's beside the point. I tried a LOT of ideas to help with this issue. The winner was wrapping my bar with Wilson tennis racket grip tape, $2.50 for 3 pieces at wal-mart or target. Start with the sticky, tapered end toward the center, wrap it pretty tight, then use a piece of athletic tape to secure the end when you get to it. I have only wrapped my bar one time and it has lastest through the last 6 months WOD's. Not 1 tear since, not even 1 blister. If anyone wants any more info about it, e-mail me. I can take a picture of my bar and the wrap I use and send it to you. "OH SWEET RELIEF", my hands say. IT REALLY WORKS!!!!

1. General mental fatigue

Does it matter if I do pull ups with my palms facing me or facing away from me...I've always referred to palms facing me as pull ups and palms facing away as chin ups but in the videos on here they show people do a combination of both...so does it matter what I do??

I've seen countless posts whenever there is a pull-up intensive WOD on torn calluses, blisters, etc., and yet people continue to perform them. I just cannot understand the logic. If you are performing pull-ups and you rip your calluses, have you really achieved anything? What is so tough about tearing up your hands? Please don't say it is a mental thing that one needs to over come. It's not tough and no one is impressed. If you feel your hands are about to rip, stop, and save it for another day.
Be smart and learn how to take care of your hands. When you notice thick calluses forming, moisten your palms and use cuticle scissors to cut away the top layer of the callus. Don't cut all of the callus, because you want to maintain just enough to be able to effectively grip barbells, Kettlebells, and pull-up bars. Next, use a pumice stone to smooth the skin. Avoid the excessive use of chalk, especially when using Kettlebells. The best thing you can for your hands is to practice daily maintenance; do this and you will stay in the game.

Are you allowed to use wrist straps when doing pull ups, especially when performing sets like this? I only ask because I try to begin my pull ups w/o straps, but my grip fails long before other muscles. When that happens I usually will put on wrist straps and am able to continue for another few sets/reps.

I brought my rings with me to the gym and practiced the Iron Cross on the gravitron afterwards. I tried it before for the 1st time on Saturday outside at the park just for a cool picture. I didn't realize how hard it is pulling yourself back up from it until today! It was probably because of the pull-ups I did before.
After I got my arms tired from the Iron Cross, I practiced the back lever for the 2nd time ever. Just like last time, my upper body has no idea what my lower body is doing. Oh well I'll get it eventually... I guess it's time to do some research!

What a WOD, how deceptive on paper. I honestly thought I'd get close to 20; I have, after all, frequently done 20 PUs in under a minute.
But time is a relentless taskmaster. In fact, the structure of the workout is a near-perfect metaphor for how we experience time as we grow old, how the scarcity of time reveals itself so suddenly, often when we're least prepared for it.
I'm serious, stay with me here. In the first couple of minutes, everything seems so easy, time passes so slowly, we just can't wait to grab that bar again. Even around the eighth minute, it's difficult to imagine that time will ever seem anything but limitless. And then, all of a sudden....BAM! There's not enough time....

Whew, I think that is the most pullups I've ever done in one workout (181). Unbroken through 14 rounds! 10-5 on round 15. 8-4-2-2 on round 16. Rounds 17 and on were tough, a set of 5 or so, and then mostly twosies and singles. Finished round 18 at the 59 second mark - couldn't even start round 19 until 15 seconds in. Hands are really sore - no open tears, but blisters in a few places.
Used butterfly kip the whole time. Not sure if it's easier than the normal kip, but it IS faster - with regular kip, I can do 1 pullup every ~2 sec, with butterfly, I can do 1 every ~1.5 sec, even taking into account times when I lose my rhythm. Makes a difference in this WOD, where you are rewarded for finishing fast - as you get more rest time before the next minute starts.

TONY-
C'mon brother, are you really gonna get on people's case for ripping hands? You may aswell punish them for all sport related injuries... It just seems like you were having a bad day and wanted to lecture someone, save it for children... Tearing your hand is almost innevitable with CF and it is, in a sense, a right of passage here... I'm not in any way condoning the deliberate ignorance of health for the sake of saying you earned your scars, but most of us know what were doing and personally, I don't enjoy tearing a palm, but it's a badge of honor or a couple days... That is, in a way, the essence of what were doing here, we don't stop at almost... That's why mr pukie exists and why cf thrives...
To all who tore hands on this exercise-
Tony gives good advice on proper upkeep of hands, but always push yourself when you can! No reservations. No regrets! Now tape that hand and get after it!!!

16 plus 14 vs 16 plus 13 last time. The 14th was right on the buzzer.
14 min + 11 = 116 (all kipping, of course, with quads up to horizontal)
As far as I can tell, based on those who also posted height and weight, that's good for someone my size. Plus, I beat my last (2 rotations ago) total by over 1 round.
12 rounds + 12 pullups. In the middle of the last round the bar came loose and began free rotating. That made things interesting.
1 pullup less than PR of 13 rounds.
Worked on goats: hamstring flexibility, double-unders, muscle-ups. Did 60 consecutive double-unders, a PR!
