Question:

I noticed on 5x5 back squat day that quite a few people said they should have started higher because they could have done more. If I personally am going for a heavy lift, I try to gauge my lifts around what will peak out in a PR/max effort for that day, whether it means going over the prescribed number of sets or not. How come people stop if they feel they can go more? The other day I did heavy thrusters for a 1 rep - and I did WAY more than the prescribed 7, and I'm happy that I did because I got back my pre-injury weight, (after 5 failures) and even attempted to do more. Do you guys not agree? Tomorrow is back squats for me, I'm running a few days behind...

Does anyone else find Barry Sears to be a little too hand-wavy? There isn't much substance to most of his anecdotes, if you actually look into them. He overstates so many accomplishments and seems like he just says things 'louder' instead of being more measured and accurate in his speech.

Most Gold Medalists are not zone diet followers, I'm not even sure the swimming medalists he keeps talking about were, there is little evidence for it. Beyond that, who knows what he's talking about when he says the zone? It isn't the 40/30/30 designation when he's talking about athletes taking it, but more just a high-fat diet. The looser he defines what is "the zone" the more he can claim that athletes are using it.

I think the Zone diet needs to be more specifically defined, so that it can actually be tested. Specific recommendations like post-work out meals, pre-work out meals, fish oil, food quality, etc. should not all be lumped into "the zone."

I really don't understand why crossfit has latched onto this diet, or Dr. Sears in-particular. It really doesn't seem to offer much.

Comment #11 - Posted by: Jared at October 31, 2009 8:04 PM

#3 Steven@crossfitaffliction

Why? These are meant to be max effort 800s, and full recovery should be allowed. I sure as hell need more than 5 minutes to optimize recovery between efforts. Why limit it?

Jared, I have been following the 'zone' diet quite closely - I wouldn't say religiously - and I have experienced a huge difference in bodyfat reduction. I wasn't fat by any means but have leaned out quite a bit without losing muscle mass too. I am not trying to make the claim that the zone did it, the workouts definitely make a huge impact. I guess I am saying try if you don't believe, what have you got to lose. Your performance definitley won't suffer. From what I have experienced from the book is cut out the bread, rice, pasta and potatoes - not unlike many diets. Lots of veggies, fish, chicken, etc.. Just make sure the 40/30/30 is in the correct block amounts to maintain that ratio. Worse comes to worse you dont like it but have tried a healthy eating regimen. Good luck.

Comment #16 - Posted by: Troy at October 31, 2009 8:30 PM

*Jared*
The Zone IS 40/30/30. Fish oil is just an association and an amplification of what the Zone already does, and that is insulin regulation and inflammation control.

Now whether or not the studies he conducted with the swimmers and other athletes are still valid is irrelevant because we have an entire community of people who validate that the Zone diet is working. Getting THAT hung up on specifics either shows that your not trying hard enough or your really don't care.

Comment #17 - Posted by: Eric at October 31, 2009 8:34 PM

yep...I second the hate running but hey lets get it on....SUB-RAT IT UP!!!!!

Comment #18 - Posted by: RATB's at October 31, 2009 9:08 PM

In response.

I have tried the zone. It did help me get off high-glycemic carbs, sugar, etc. But I think that was more the Paleo that i was integrating at the same time. The zone does tell you to do low-glycemic carbs, but does not restrict you to those food sources.

Yes, the 40/30/30 Is the zone but I have watched this Barry Sears lecture from almost start to finish, and most of what he is talking about does not have very much to do with these ratios. A lot of crossfitters who say they follow the zone, also do not follow the 40/30/30 ratio, the zone prescribes you up your fat intake if you need more calories, now the 40/30/30 ratio that was seemingly so important is gone, and replaced with something not very specific.

My point is, that if all the zone is is 40/30/30, then it isn't much. And, to me, the other changes in diet have been much more important. The zone is needlessly complicated, for me. That is, the official Crossfit recommendations for diet are much more helpful than the Zone diet. Beyond that, specific recommendations pre/post workout are also more helpful, and I think more measurable than this vague 40/30/30 that just gets tweaked to the point where the original idea isn't even there anymore.

As far as a whole community of people who validate the zone, I don't see that either. Crossfit prescribes the zone diet, so a lot of serious crossfitters are zone dieters. However, not following the zone has not precluded people from being top crossfitters. You can say that they are doing it in-spite of their less than ideal diet, and I can say that an ideal diet is much more variable than Barry Sears would suggest in all of his hand-waving.

Also, for people just reading the books and trying to do the diets, atkins seems to be more effective:

http://www.theheart.org/article/774531.do

Not only did they lose more weight than Zone dieters, but they had better health markers.

I think that if crossfit got away from the complicated prescription of the zone, and pushed something simpler like Paleo, they would get better results over the entire community. The Zone has been around for a long time and has very little to show for it.

Comment #19 - Posted by: Jared at October 31, 2009 9:16 PM

And how many videos of top crossfitters, I mean, people who are in the top 10 at the games. How many videos have we watched where they ask them what they eat, and they say they make good food choices, etc, or kind-of follow the zone, etc. I have yet to see one where they are like, "yes, I'm strict 18 blocks zoner, I weigh and measure my food, and am exactly at 40/30/30." I haven't seen it. That doesn't mean that it's not out there, but it definitely isn't the norm.

I'm doing this thing I dubbed, "eye-balling the zone" I know the basics, I know about what food has in it, approximate portions, which foods are high and low gly.
It's less time consuming if I just try to follow the principles and not count. I'm going for longevity. For me, I know eyeballing it, sticking to principles, will work better than precision counting..

I have been doing crossfit for 1 month now, minus a week for the flu, and I feel great. My recovery time has improved dramtically. This run today should be exactly what I need to sweat out the last little bit of funk left over from the pig!

This is a video of the Stanford doctor discussing the study you refer to - http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=eREuZEdMAVo&feature=PlayList&p=86A676EB7D10549D&playnext=1&playnext_from=PL&index=95 really interesting. What I got from that was he questioned how much compliance they actually got during the study, from all the different participants, and how much that altered the results. Also, they didn't look at body composition, only total weight loss. Personally I would rather lose a few less pounds if it was strictly fat than post a bigger number and lose muscle as well.

The zone isn't that difficult to follow once you get used to it, maybe just boring? I think you have a point about upping the fat level when you need more calories, although the primary ratio seems to be protein to carbs. I've wondered why you wouldn't add another block of everything rather than just fat, thus maintaining the 40/30/30.

I've read all the zone books (my favorite is the latest, "Toxic Fat")and IMO Dr. Sears makes a hugely strong case for the zone, not only for weight loss, but also overall health and performance.

Sunday musings (back from San Fran/Santa Cruz)...

1) Twitterpated. Used to mean head over heels to Thumper.

2) Capitalism. Edison and Bell died wealthy men. Gates and Jobs will likely do the same. The automobile. The cotton gin. The computer. The internet. The creation of advances for 200 years has occurred in a system that rewards personal ambition.

3) Haunted. My kitchen table growls. It jumps and chatters and travels all around the room. Seems it's been "inhabited" by a couple of puppies and only ONE bone.

4) Honeymoon. Mrs. bingo and I just returned from 4 days alone in SF/SC, our first trip with just the two of us in 4 years. No agenda, no itinerary. 4 days of sleeping in, holding hands, and sunsets. We are one school year away from being empty nesters, and this trip was a little preview. I sit here now, barely awake after a night filled with teenagers on Halloween, rested and relaxed and quite happy.

I will really miss the energy of Lil' Bingo and his buddies, but the honeymoon isn't over until someone declares it so, and ours is just beginning. Again.

4) Passion and transference. I am a huge fan of passion. You know, the kind of feeling you have about that thing or couple of things that you can't wait to do, that you might work in order to do. Mrs. Bingo and "Lovely Daughter" have a passion for horses; they can't wait to get to the barn, and they linger way past the time when they should leave. They subscribe to, read, and surf the equestrian world constantly. It always makes them happy.

I have strong feelings about passion because for many years I did not have one (other than Mrs. Bingo). I was openly envious of those who did, and on a continuous and constant search for one to call my own. I am not particularly passionate about my work, and any tiny flame I might have fanned was extinguished in a previous job, buried behind a cheer-free veneer of success. A new situation kindled a different flame, excitement, recently stoked by new technology, techniques, and teaching. But not the exquisite combination of passion and production that one experiences when one works at one's passion.

Enter Crossfit. Have you spent any time on the Affiliate Blog? Do you do your Crossfit at a Crossfit Affiliate gym? Ever chat with an Affiliate owner? Ah, now HERE are people who have a passion and who go to work every day engulfed in the flame of that passion. In some way, shape, or form most of us here share that passion, don't you think? Even if we don't make a living doing Crossfit. There's just something about this thing that lends itself to passion. Heck, even people who have sincere disagreements with things Crossfit (like Greyskull) are quite passionate about them.

So what is it about Crossfit that generates these feelings? Is it the willingness to seek discomfort, that quest to be "comfortable with discomfort" per OPT? Is it the sharing of that discomfort, the community that has grown up around two fitness trainers' ideas? What is it? I confess that I just don't know. But if there is anything in my life besides Mrs. Bingo that might be my passion it is Crossfit; my hope is that there will be more and more of it in my life.

I HAVE noticed that passion, too, seems to be transferable, just like most of the other good things in Crossfit. I'm a little more excited about all of the other good things in life, and a little more open to the possibility that I just might become passionate about some of them, some day.

I'll see you next week...

Comment #46 - Posted by: bingo at November 1, 2009 6:29 AM

bingo - nice Sunday musings... :-)

Way cool that your wife and daughter share the horse passion! I just had to give up my horse passion (DH says "obsession") and found Crossfit just in time!

"So, what is it about Crossfit that generates these feelings?" For me, it's challenging myself, the detail, the minutae that makes huge differences, that someone cares enuf to point out to rotate the knees out in the squat, the lightbulb thrills of accomplishment (like the first squat that felt easy because someone pointed out the minutae that led to accomplishment), the continuum -- CF is like dressage or golf -- there's NO END... The more you learn the more you know you have yet to learn!!!! Progress and challenge are undeniable...

I'm hooked - perfect replacement for my dressage/horse habit...

I have a question on scaling the workouts...

For yesterday's, I scaled according to the site, mostly because I need it for the pullups and push ups. I was very tired from those 2 exercises, but felt I could have done more situps and squats.

When this is the case, should I add more situps/squats or leave as is?

I only scale my weak areas, and the parts that are my stronger areas i keep the same. No reason to scale something that you can do as rx'd. So it's only a partially scaled WOD.

I was alone struggling for air and pace. I felt slow and dired. it was hard to keep a good pace. Last time I ran with/against Brady. I see now what a great destraction it was. It realy was mental for me to get it all together.

Re: Zone. It is not just about 40/30/30, it is also and perhaps more importantly about porion size. The fact that the best athletes go 2x, 3x, 4x, or even 5x the fat allows for flexibility in the system. It would be unbelievable and unresonable to expect that a couch potato and a top athlete should follow the exact same diet.

I know my results are best when I am eating 15 or 16 blocks than when I eat 18 to 22 blocks even if the proportions are identical.

Re: Sears and the Zone diet.

My understanding of Sears original proposition is that greater health will ensue if one avoids a diet that promotes insulin spikes by eating carbohydrates that have a low glycemic index. Moreso, that one can improve health (using a traditional definition and traditional medical metrics) if one balances the stimuli for both insulin and glucagon release after meals, if one balances the macronutrients CHO and protein.

One must then look at implementation of the Zone diet to understand where Sears goes next, for after the above he reasonably could have been done. If one seeks to achieve an "ideal" body composition compatible with traditional definitions of health one would adhere to a 40-30-30 plan of macronutrient balancing (utilizing modern concepts of beneficial fat consumption ie. no trans-fats). However, if one seeks to use food as fuel, as we in part do here in Crossfit, one would then shift to another version of the Zone diet, the so-called "Athlete's Zone" where one maintains the relationship between CHO and protein, but where one "up-fuels" with increase fat.

Can truly elite athletes of any kind truly improve performance using this type of Zone diet? You know, the 0.1%ers? No idea. But if we are going to have a conversation about this we should agree on a little background, agree on the location of the starting line.

Joshua, (posts 84-85) I hope you gave track a chance, because those splits are incredible! I've never in my life heard of a dude as big as you running those times. Division 1 scholarship 800m runners don't run those splits in a typical workout. You've got a serious motor my man.

Matt (post 88) I used to be a cross country runner I always led everyone for the first mile then my motor runs low...lol....I'm 190 not overweight at all I primarly before yesterday lift weights 45 min 4 times a week and swim 5 times a week on my off day and after my lifts I am good for short distances running not so much for longer ;)....yesterday what killed me is I did all straight pullups (palms away from face) as well as no kipping and all from a dead hang I guess thats why I gave up after doing 100 strict pullups... I dunno if crossfit is for me I think i am gonna incorporate it a little. I dunno....maybe lift/swim twice a week and crossfit twice a week I need to think this out

Naturally portion size would matter, but why would the high level athlete do 5x fat? Wouldn't this person also have higher need for protein & carbs as well? I'll guess that if you dropped to 12 blocks and did 5x fat you would not feel as good?

I donated blood two days ago, and am wondering whether the lowered red blood cell count might be affecting my performance...

Bingo: Nice post. I too wonder why I've become so passionate about CrossFit. Probably there are lots of reasons, but for me one is the intense feelings you get from pushing yourself to your limit, seeing just how far you can push yourself, what your limitations are. And finding out that it's more than you thought (sometimes). And then there are the endorphins... Ahh, those sweet glandular secretions!

All, I work a day behind the schedule here because I work nights and I like the option of changing my workouts when necessar. Today I was doing the Halloween WOD as was getting it done pretty well. I was at the 75 rep round on my 40th pullup at about 20 mins, when I ripped one of my calluses off of my hand. I tryed finishing on the assisted pullup machine but the damage was doing so I just finished my situps.
At any rate does any one has suggestions on calluses and how to keep this from happening in the future? I was already using chalk.

I tried to do the second run on one minute rest and quickly realized that was a bad idea... I had to stop after a 1/4 mile for a little while because I was going to puke which killed my time.

My other rest breaks were about 3 to 4 minutes

RE to Comment #121:
At the age of 38 and beyond, I think it's all about injury prevention, even more so with each passing year.

RE Zone Comments:
From what I got out of reading a few Zone books, I thought blocks were supposeb to initiate desired hormonal release...but, if we have a higher fuel consumption rate, then we just toss in more fat. All three macronutrients initiate an insulin response, so I'm wondering how increasing one of them can stave off hunger without sacrificing the integrity of the proper block amounts, which will initiate proper hormonal responses.

I guess the answer is far more complicated than I can understand, but I think that you're either on the Zone or you're not. I'm not being judgmental because I don't Zone, but the more that a person modifies prescribed blocks, then the less they're doing the Zone. I attended a nutrition briefing from one of the dieticians for the 2010 U.S. Olympic Team; the presenter dissected and summarized 25 popular diets. He didn't have anything negative to say about the Zone at all, but the challenge that he pointed out was to measure all of the food to achieve the prescribed portion amounts of macronutrients on a consistent basis, meal after meal.

Rds 1 & 3 involved a slight incline. Slight decline for evens. Ran on gravel road at farm.
P.S.- How are people posting such times on a treadmill? I have to run at least twice the pace of on ground when using a treadmill, to cover the same distance. This is likely near the tread's max setting. Are people doing these on max speed? I would sooner run outdoors in the dead of winter just so it won't take as long as it does on a tread.

I was excited for this one because I like running fast, but my gym ruined it.
1st run - 10MPH, at 1/4 mile, treadmill slowed to a stop - I couldn't get it to go.
Moved to another treadmill - same thing. Error popped up.
Moved to another treadmill - found out I had already spent my legs for the fastest running. Got really bummed out and just did some running.

I weigh 250#, so I know the treadmills struggle with me running that fast, but I've done it before without issue.

Did 800m in shoes, 400m barefoot, 800m in shoes, 400m barefoot. Not quite strong enough in the calves/feet to run a good pace for 800m, only the second time running barefoot and it feels GREAT (hard on the muscles but I FLY). Someday I will stop hating running....

I think maybe I wasn't pushing hard enough the first 3 rounds..i've been kinda taking it easy my first time with each workout, just getting a time to beat. The fact that round 4 was so much better is making me rethink that right now.

...Between throbbing shins and cramping calves, I had to stop. I'm wondering if it would have been better with tennis shoes on grass as opposed to vibrams on a track. I run on my toes, but I may have a funny push-off since I have big feet AND I'm flat-footed. Any thoughts?

Anyway, the first two splits blew away my expectations, so I'm happy. I just wish that I could have kept going because there was plenty of gas left in the tank...The final stretches of those splits were an out-of-body experience.

Four rounds, each for time of:
800 meter run (subbed 1000 m rows)

Rest as needed between efforts.

Pressed for time so did only 3 rounds at 3:57, 3:57, 3:59. Not enough rest time, but still, much slower than last time:
3:48, 3:49, 3:49, 3:53

Next time strategy: maintain 1:50 per 500m pace for first and third 250 m segments, 1:55-2:00 for second and fourth

Have yet to meet pukie... but today I met fainty!!

Pretty crazy... after running my first 1/2 mile at 10MPH... I stopped running and felt very light headed and sorta wobbly so I went and sat down... everything just got kinda quiet and then just faded out.... When I woke up seconds later... I assume (pretty sure it was the same song on my ipod) I wasn't sure where I was I thought I was waking up on my couch bc I thought the TV was on... (TV = my ipod) in any event I was fine and actually drank lots of water and then ran again about 20 minutes later..... WEIRD!!
