4 months ago to this day (June 23rd 2009), I had a second shoulder surgery (SLAP Type IIa repair, 3 anchors, subacromial decompression, and sucapularis fix).

Today I hit 5 reps of an overhead squat of 99#, a 5 rep front squat of 176#, a 5 rep shoulder press of 93#, and a 5 rep deadlift of 352#. Life is good :)

What would you recommend doing if the most weight I have access to is 310lbs? My max is prob closer to 320... Should I do like a 2-2-2-2-2?

I hope I can go over 300 for only the second time. I seem to be stuck on 285...

Since I started crossfit my squat has gone way up my pull-ups and push-ups have improved like crazy but my deadlift hasn't moved.

Comment #21 - Posted by: wayne at October 23, 2009 8:59 PM

Need advice on an alternate. My two lumbar hernias are bugging me and my legs are tired from yesterday's WOD, so I think it would be better to skip out on DL 1RM for a while. I was thinking on doing a Tabata with push ups, superman, squats and knees to elbows. Even though my legs are wasted I could pull off squats without stressing my back. Any recommendations?

Comment #22 - Posted by: Rene J. Guillon at October 23, 2009 9:21 PM

Any suggestions for mid back back spasms??? Started in the middle of fran four days ago and I cannot stand missing WODS, it's making me crazy....

Comment #23 - Posted by: cheeks at October 23, 2009 9:38 PM

RE: comment 2

Lifting shoes for DL's? As was said before, socks or my favorite, Chuck Taylors. Flat soled shoes work best for deads. OLY shoes pitch you forward a bit too much for my taste.

Comment #24 - Posted by: Nate at October 23, 2009 10:13 PM

#28 Raine,
Tucker advises not to do any wods during the 2 days of the Gymnastics cert, because of the strain you will be putting on your core muscles the 2 days, going into hollows all the time, while performing the gymnastics moves,i was extremely sore for a couple of days, felt as if i'd torn something, but it's all good pain .

Wow that for some reason hurt worse than normal...good form but it seems I feel weaker..I got up previous PR of 405 then busted the bar by droppin weights...Man I felt weak though...But hey good enough for me for now...I will get my strength back..

As of OCT 1 I quit chewing tobacco, drinking and started Paleo diet...so yes that might be cause of weaker form for now..SUBRAT!!!!!!

How much rest time are we supposted to take between sets?

Should each set be at max? Or, do I work up to a 1 rep max?

What this stuff about socks? Do you do the deadlifts in your socks?

#48. Here's my 2 cents.

Any grip, any stance, heaviest weight as possible for 7 singles. Just like some people do wide stance squats for singles. Do what's best for you.

In my PL days, I used to pull sumo style. In OL years, I switched to regular stance DL. Nowadays, I pull regular because, for me, it transfers more in other lifts like clean and snatch.

But I might give a try at sumo DL today as I want to reach high numbers.

Mentally, I didn’t feel up to attempting deadlift singles again so soon after Total and just a month after this came up last time. So, to mix it up and ensure I got in some decent volume, I decided to work sets of 3’s instead.

Deadlift
3-3-3-3-3

286
300
310 PR
315 PR
320 PR (20 pound PR over previous 3RM)

Later, attempted a single:

354×1 PR (9 pounds over previous 1RM)

Surprised at how the day went, considering how heavy it all felt when I was starting the workout.

Am I wrong, but I thought that this wasn't 7 ATTEMPTS at a 1RM Deadlift, but that you are acatually supposed to lift the max weight you can at each round. It should be 7 COMPLETED 1 RM lifts even if you have to change the weight. Someone tell me if I am wrong but posted a failure seems a little rediculous. Also, why are people posting the weight they warmed up with? It should be only the max weight for each round. Please, someone at HQ tell me whats up, becuase I think people are crazy. Here's my COMPLETED(!!!!!) lifts.

Relax Eric Pelletier, we are just having fun with our workouts, crossfit is about escaping boredom and routine. When I played college ball we didn't just review the tapes of our wins, we also reviewed the ones we lost! (shocking ! lol) . excepting failure isn't an opposition in my book, but you can learn from it and the only way you learn is by acknowledging it my friend. so I say post your extra sets and your failures be freeee!!!

Comment #85 - Posted by: julius at October 24, 2009 10:59 AM

Quick question is it ok to use straps or does it go against the whole ethos or all round development.

The reason i ask is that my grip failed before i perhaps got to my max 1 rep.

Off PR (415#) by 70#. Still recovering from a low back injury so I was being very cautious. 345# went up easy. However, I felt a slight pop and some pain at 365# so I dropped the weight. Pain continued so I decided to stop there. Hope this doesn't set back my recovery. No fun having an injury!

Could only do two sets of 405. Yesterday I did the WOD revised with 50 pullups per round. Following this, I played an intense intramural football game at my school, and I have never felt so exhausted in my Life. At least not since the 4-a-days from football camp in high school.

Sad though I couldn't do this W.O.D.

Eric,
IMO the intent is to work up to your 1RM, to do 1 set of 7 reps of your 1RM is a brutal deadlift workout, and again, IMO would hurt more than help...ref some of Tate's vid lectures and not to misquote Rippetoe...a heavy deadlift day can take easily a week to recover sufficiently from, and after you pull your 1RM you would add weight till you fail to pull the next rep..then you are done. Some of the strength days you could possibly try again, but i wouldn't attempt a failed PR weight on DL. Hope that rambling helped.

Burpees: 6 sets of 10

DL: Did my first ever DL last week, starting at 125 and going to 200. Felt like I could have lifted more, but was nervous about the back. Today:

185-190-195-200-205-210-215 kept going 220-230-240-250-250 not maxed out, but stopped
Goal:300

10 failed muscle-up attempts

weighted pull-ups (45 lb): 5-4-4-3-3

Ball Slams (12-lb d-ball): 6 sets of 12, tabata style

Cooled down with a rope, where I got my FIRST DOUBLE UNDER! The next ten were like riding a bicycle (not exactly).

Hardest part of workout: the burpees, BY FAR.

Not sure if you're being serious, but if you are, lighten up a little, man. People can post whatever they want that they feel will help them for next time. A lot of people post failed attempts so they can refer back and know what they tried last time. Some people may post what music they listened to or if there dog peed on their weights. For some people the post is more for themselves than anything else. This is supposed to healthy and fun, relax a little. I dig the intensity but save it for the workouts.

Went with a wider stance after 400 to help with low-back inflexibility. Felt great! Finished up with some 95lbs sumo deadlift high-pulls, figure that was stupid since we haven't seen those for a week or so on a WoD....would be my luck that we have to do them tomorrow.

I was wondering if anyone could offer any advice or suggestions for a problem I have with heavy lifting. The last time I did heavy deadlift (when I went for a CrossFit Total), on my second attempt deadlift at 365 lbs, I almost passed out. I was able to get full extension and return it to the ground without falling over, but I lost sensation in my face, and arms, got a little bit of tunnel vision and went temporarily deaf. Obviously, this sounds pretty serious, but I was wondering what some of your opinions were on this situation. I know that the recommendation for heavy lifting is the Valsalva, but has anyone else had this problem before, or any coaches out there dealt with a client complaining of a similiar problem? I've lifted heavier than this in the past (my PR is 400 lbs), but haven't had anything that bad happen prior to this.

Didn't deadlift, but I'm going to post anyway:

MEBB: Back squat 5-5-5-3-3-3. 185-205-225-235-235-235. 3RM PR by 10 lbs.

Goat-Based Warmup:
3 rounds:
2:00 PNF hamstring stretch each round
25/50/100 double-unders
2/4/6 muscle-ups

The Goat-Based Warmup works my three biggest current goats (flexibility, double-unders, muscle-ups), while allowing for a warmup by increasing reps each round. It also provides a defined progression: I'll continue this particular warmup until I can do one of the exercises unbroken in the last round: 100 double-unders or 6 muscle-ups. Then I'll swap in a different goat, with a similar rep scheme.

The Goat-Based Warmup takes about 20 minutes.

Today just wasn't a good day. 385,395,405,405(f)...started to black out on the last one, took about 5 minutes and MANY deep breaths, then dropped down to 365 and STILL came close to blacking out...worked on double unders and HSPU's...Disappointed...

CFWU with light DL's then,
DL: 225-325-365-405 ouch my back!

stopped because something popped in my lower back. no belt today, should have gone home and grabbed it.

did CFE instead. 400m run x 5 with 2:00 rest at 11.5 mph on treadmill. 1:18-1:20

3:00 iso-squat hold.

hope I'll feel better tomorrow.

Did this one today - a few days behind.
I started using straps after being unable to use the overhand grip exclusively to lift, instead of going mixed grip. Is this suggested? What do most people do?

225

335 (failed on grip - moved to straps)
345 (previous PR, mixed grip)

Any suggestions welcome - I read something about ripping your bicep mixed grip - didn't want to do that - but I'd like to know what others are doing.

Thanks

Question for the group/coaches?
Like mentioned by
#236 - Posted by: Clinton Canaday, I was getting really light headed after the heavier DL. Lots of straining and grunting on the way up, of course! I would tend to do 3-4 deep inhalations prior to the lift then from a full inhalation, stain up with a loud grunt (slow exhale). Is that normal for the DL or am I doing something wrong?

First time doing this WOD since my hamstring injury in the spring.

135-225-315-405-425-425-425(F)-405

Normally I would have continued with the 405's for three more rounds, but my mind was getting the best of me on the 1 rep maxes thinking something was going to pop. Grip was the limiting factor, otherwise felt strong. So I continued with 5 rounds of 3 deadlift reps each as follows:

315-315-365-365-365

Again grip was the limiting factor. Wasn't quite done so continued with the following as fast as I could:

12 deadlifts 225 lb
21 push-ups
9 deadlifts 225 lb
15 push-ups
6 deadlifts 225 lb
9 push-ups
15 push ups

After this I was pretty well spent.

Didn't truly max out, just worked on some deadlift progressions due to slightly torn hands. Didn't want to make them worse and tape was not cooperating.

225x5 - 295x3 - 315 - 315 - 365 - 365 - 365 - 365

365 felt good and pretty easy, should still be on par with my PR of 400

Did this after grappling, bought in with 50 kettle bell DL 80lbs, 20 pullups, 50 pushups, 50 4 count flutter kicks.

Forgot my base on the max DL next time I will move my weight up accordingly. GOAL: 355 (raw)
