Rest in Peace brother
American by Birth, Lightfighter by Choice
What If I have rings but can't do a muscle up? Should I perform 21 pullups followed with 7 ring dips?
Rest In Peace Sir. My thoughts and prayers are with his family and friends.
I think HQ is trying to break my chest. Might have to go with bar muscle-ups on this one.
RIP. Thank you for serving.
RIP Tyler, tomorrows WOD is for you.
I can't think of a better way to celebrate the life of a hero, and honor his sacrifice. I was going to take tomorrow off until now. This one is for you Tyler! Let's all be in prayer for his family and friens.
it sucks to see more and more hero workouts, but i will be pushing hard for you tyler. RIP
Thinking of you brother. God bless you.
In honor of a fallen brother. I'll do this workout with all I have. Rest in peace.
Day is done, gone the sun,
From the hills, from the lake,
From the skies.
All is well, safely rest,
God is nigh.
Go to sleep, peaceful sleep,
May the soldier or sailor,
God keep.
On the land or the deep,
Safe in sleep.
Love, good night, Must thou go,
When the day, And the night
Need thee so?
All is well. Speedeth all
To their rest.
Fades the light; And afar
Goeth day, And the stars
Shineth bright,
Fare thee well; Day has gone,
Night is on.
Thanks and praise, For our days,
'Neath the sun, Neath the stars,
'Neath the sky,
As we go, This we know,
God is nigh.
Rest in peace, Tyler. Thank you for protecting our country. My prayers go out to your family.
Thank you for your sacrifice, Tyler.
RIP - Thank you for giving your life so others may keep theirs. You exemplify the men and women who give without being asked.
RIP Lt. Tomorrow is for you and your sacrifice.
Can't do this wod because of work but I would like to truly thank you Tyler for you service to my country. Without people like you who knows where I would be. Thank you and rest in peace man.
Hate to see new hero workouts.
I thank you Tyler from the bottom of my heart, rest in peace.
well this is for you my fellow brother n arms....the pain will only be skin deep...lets SUBRAT it UP!!!!!!
Rest in Peace Tyler Parten, my prayers go out for you and your family.
Rest in peace, and God bless.
It is always a sad shock when a new hero WOD pops up. Sir, rest easy now, and thank you. To my fellow brothers in arms, and CFers...lets honor this fine Lt by destroying our bodies tomorrow. S/F
RIP Tyler will go damn hard tomorrow with this one
Cannot wait to do this workout
Great cycle!!! RIP TYLER!!!
I'll say the Mourners Kaddish for Tyler tonight. Rest in Peace Tyler, your sacrifice won't be forgotten.

My prayers go out to your family, Tyler. Thank you for your service, and God Bless you and all the other soldiers in harms way. You are all heroes!
Rest in peace Tyler. Prayers go to your family and friends. Will do this WOD soon in your honor.
RIP Tyler. We've run in the same circles. Tomorrow is my first formal on-ramp after two years of individual crossfitting. I'll be thinking of you.
RIP, Tyler.
Thank you for your service.
Getting after this one hard tomorrow
Your sacrifice will never be forgotten. Tomorrow, we honor you the best way we know how...
RIP, Tyler.
Thank you for your service and sacrifice. A good reminder that America is still at war even though much of the country seems oblivious to this fact.
We owe these brave men and women all of our support, respect and the honor of calling them "HERO" instead of some over paid sportsman or entertainer.
May God bless Tyler's family and loved ones with peace and comfort.
Rest in peace Tyler. It broke my heart to see tomorrow's WOD.
#2
Try jumping muscle ups
#26 Tim - Thanks for the heads up! My box is my garage and I am slowly upgrading my gear as finances allow. Sounds like the Rogue bar may get moved up on the priority list.

Five rounds for time of:
7 Muscle-ups
95 pound Sumo-deadlift high-pull, 21 reps
33:12, muscleups were slow as always.
Gods speed Tyler.
Rest In Peace Sir. Raise your glass and sing the praise of a fallen soul. See you all on the floor tomorrow
RIP brother. You are not forgotten. Your efforts are not in vain. God speed to all our Soldiers, Sailors, Airmen and Marines. You are all in ours prayers.......Thank you!
Tyler, you're officially a Crossfit Hero...though you've been a hero for years in so many ways. We'll never forget your sacrifice, Brother. Rest now, as we continue to work in your honor.
Tyler my heart sank when I heard about this. Even though we only spent a short time together, I feel truly grateful for having known you. You were there when my family was going through our darkest moment. Andy was lucky to have known you as a classmate and friend. My thoughts and prayers continue to be with your family. Rest in peace brother, you've done well.
As day slips blissfully into the night,
Another soldier waged the good fight.
A husband or father, a brother or son,
We are eternally grateful for what you have done.
Stand down now soldier, your duty is o'er,
And rest in God's arms, forever more.
Tyler's sacrifice sure puts things back in perspective. I may not do the WOD tomorrow, but I will spend time with my 17 year old son.
hey I have a question, my wrists still haven't healed from the 30 muscle ups we did a while ago, is this fairly normal? I've only been doing the WODs for about three months so I haven't had a lot of experience with muscle ups but they aren't overly hard, it's just that they tear up my wrists so bad to where I feel they aren't worth doing. how hard is it to do them with no false grip?
R.I.P., brother in arms, warrior, fellow Arkansan.
High speed, Tyler.
Tim #26, we've heard you all week about your barbell. It sucks, and I'm sorry. But today would have been a good time to give everyone a break from the SHOUTING and have some respect for the WOD.
Blood and Steel Trooper you wore your spurs with honor. Sleep well brother.
I knew Tyler from school. What a great soldier and a great leader. Always Remember Never Surrender... Ducks live forever.
R.I.P. brother in arms. It was an honor serving with you. This one's for you!
See you at fiddlers green. RIP.. Scouts Out
...Not another one.
RIP, Lieutenant.
Lt, Rest easy knowing that we have the 'Watch'...
... Our prayers are with you & yours. Gods speed!
This has to be one of my new favorites. Can't wait to try it out.
Godspeed, brother. Thank you for your sacrifice. Peace to your family.
If you need to sub the Muscle Up's, the substitution is the following, from the FAQ section on this site:
"Most common substitution is 3 pullups +3 dips, or 4 pullups +4 dips."
So the wod would look like this,
Five Rounds for time:
4 Pullups 4 Dips
21 95lb Sumo Dead Lift High Pulls (SDHP)
If you cant do 95lb SDHP or dont have proper form scale the weight accordingly so you dont hurt yourself.
Tyler - Thank you for your service and your sacrifice for your fellow countrymen. Your efforts and ultimate sacrifice are greatly appreciated. Our condolences to the Parten family. Godspeed and God Bless, Tyler.
Honor and Respect. Will be knocking this one out so hard I crush myself.
A real American Hero!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
End of watch, RIP 1LT Parten!
Always hard to see a new Hero. God bless Tyler, his family and brothers in arms. Thank you all for you sacrifice, you will be in my prayers tonight.
#63
that sub is "PER" muscle up. so essentially the WOD with that sub would be this
28 pullups, 28 dips, 21 95lb SDHPs
well, that is my understanding of it. because 4 pull ups + 4 dips is not equivalent to 7 muscle ups. good luck!
Rest in peace Tyler
PROPS TO THE FRAT
RIP- Thanks to those in the armed forces from the bottom of my heart.
Woe! Postumus, Postumus
The Years are flying from you
Virtue and devotion shall not delay this wrinkled age
For unconquered are the hands of death
You may try, my friend, to sacrifice hecatombs
To soothe the tearless death:
Pluto, he who ensnares even
Ample Tityus and Geryon
But there are gloomy waters which all must travel
All those who have tasted the riches of the earth
Whether they ruled as arrogant kings
Or were humble workers of the land
Vainly we flee the blood of war
And the storms of the Adriatic
Vainly we flee the dreaded autumn
And the south wind which chills the soul
You will brave the thick stagnant waters of the Cocytus
Where ill-famed Danaus, accursed Aeolus'
Son ancient Sisyphus
Are condemned to endless toil
Your land, your wife, your home
You will leave
Bring only the loathed cypress
No other tree shall follow their master
And he shall squander what you treasured
Your heir, being a worthier soul
Bursting the locks to spill the Caecuban wines
To dye your marble floors
Rip, Tyler. From one Cavalryman to another:
Halfway down the trail to Hell,
In a shady meadow green
Are the Souls of all dead troopers camped,
Near a good old-time canteen.
And this eternal resting place
Is known as Fiddlers' Green.
Marching past, straight through to Hell
The Infantry are seen.
Accompanied by the Engineers,
Artillery and Marines,
For none but the shades of Cavalrymen
Dismount at Fiddlers' Green.
Though some go curving down the trail
To seek a warmer scene.
No trooper ever gets to Hell
Ere he's emptied his canteen.
And so rides back to drink again
With friends at Fiddlers' Green.
And so when man and horse go down
Beneath a saber keen,
Or in a roaring charge of fierce melee
You stop a bullet clean,
And the hostiles come to get your scalp,
Just empty your canteen,
And put your pistol to your head
And go to Fiddlers' Green.
If you ain't Cav, you ain't.....

No rings at my JSS, so had to do pull-ups/dips. I think that helped my speed, I can probably kip pull-ups faster than I could do a muscle up. SDHP killed me though.
God Bless, LT Parten. I was in Konar with 3-71 CAV in 2006-07 when we established COPs Keating (Kamdesh) and Kamu. We lost too many great Americans then and since. His sacrifice will not go in vain!
RIP Warrior
My small suffering tomorrow is offered up in your name.
I never met Tyler, but we probably worked out at the same gyms at Fort Carson. I'll be thinking about you, man.
My gym does not have rings, how many pull ups and dips should i do to replicate the muscle ups?
Fairly new to this so unsure
Tyler was a freshman in my company at school when I was a senior. Always a great kid and full of energy. I don't think I'll be able to knock this one out anytime soon due to some operational stuff, but it'll be waiting for me when I get back.
tyler was a good guy and I will never forget him, i was surprised when i logged onto the website this morning and saw him and this workout dedicated to him. im not sure who nominated him or why, but thank you.
#49 Michael C, you should thoroughly tape your wrists and hands to avoid a rip. Google "tape grip crossfit" or something like that and you can find instructions. Use 1" athletic tape from the drugstore.
For those who keep asking for the sub. This came from FAQ.
Pullups and dips. Some have suggested 1 min of both somewhat equates to one muscle-up. Most common substitution is 3 pullups +3 dips, or 4 pullups +4 dips.

thanks tyler. my future kids will live like all of us do now because of great men like u. RIP trooper
Thanks Gunny
As silly as this sounds do you do full lenght pull ups or do you sacrifice true form in order to blast through the reps as quickly as possible?
Only started crossfit this week so just trying to find my feet!!
Hey Sir, you did your best....to your family he's a hero, doing what he did best, defending our country
'Tyler'
Time=16.22
Subbed 1 c2b pullup+1 ring dip per muscle-up due to lack of space.
Thank to whomever posted this workout!! Tyler was my classmate and an amazing guy! He deserves to be called a hero for so many reasons, I have begun working out 6 days a week hard and doing everything I can to get to Afghanistan to continue to help our brothers in arms and the innocent Afghan people that face the terror of the Taliban everyday...trying to continue to do the good that Tyler did! Thank you Tyler, I have prayed for your family everyday since that day, we know God is taking care of you now!
Jim Bon -
For the pullups - Do the Kipping Pullup, that will be the fastest way.

To the american crossfitters:
do you have plates with both pounds and kilos written on it? Or just pounds? And are they calibrated on the pounds? Or are they calibrated in kilos and converted to pounds?
And if your talking about a bar, your talking about 45lbs. The official olympic bars from the swedish company ELEIKO are callibrated on 20kg. Do you have other bars?
The most common weights in CF are:
135lbs=61kg
95lbs=43kg
Should I use resp. 61kg and 43kg. Or do you mean 60kg and 45? Or 40?
I'm sorry if i'm an antf*cker (as we say in dutch), but I think it's quite important to compare weights or times.
Gunny
Thanks again for the advise. Looks like its going to be 1 hell of a session
God bless you and keep you Tyler, you and your household. Thank you for your sacrifice.
Bless you sir Rest in peace. Your sacrifices are appreciated.

Started muscle-ups from an L-sit position just above the ground, arms not quite fully extended, due to inadequate ceiling height in my apartment. Stepped off after each muscle-up, because I didn't want to hit my tailbone when lowering off to fast.
Good workout for a bad reason.
From your brothers in Fury 2-12, we are doing this for you. RIP LT, see you at the top of the hill.
Thank you Tyler and ALL of you men and women serving our country. You are appreciated more than you know.
Go with God & Thank you. Our prayers are with your loved ones.

"War is an ugly thing, but not the ugliest of things. The decayed and degraded state of moral and patriotic feeling which thinks that nothing is worth war is much worse. The person who has nothing for which he is willing to fight, nothing which is more important than his own personal safety, is a miserable creature and has no chance of being free unless made and kept so by the exertions of better men than himself."

I always feel bad when I can't do a hero workout as rx'd, but hopefully this was a somewhat worthy sub. It's always strange doing a hero workout. Every other workout I do, I am doing for myself. When I do a hero workout though, it feels as if I am doing it for someone else. In these cases, the hero.
There's isn't quite the same gratification as when I complete a normal WoD. It's almost a feeling of sadness or futility in knowing that no matter how hard I throw myself at the workout, it won't bring that hero back. To me it really hammers home the gravity of that soldier's sacrifice, and really helps me appreciate what our men and women in uniform face every day so that I can go to the gym every day in relative safety.
Tyler, I can't match your sacrifice by this WoD, but I hope through the pain that wherever you are, you know how much we appreciate what you have done.

Did 4 rounds plus 4 MU's* in 30:55, not exactly as prescribed.
*= All Muscle Ups were Progressions starting with a jump. Bottom of the rings was at approximately 6" from ground.
Started the SDHP's and was doing them a little wrong, so got some help to correct my form on the first round. It really helped through the next 3 rounds.
In the 5th round the MU's were sloppy to the point of being dangerous and I got a little dizzy after coming off the 4th one, so I stopped before getting hurt. Might have been able to go ahead and at least do the last set of SDHP's, but felt like I would have been risking it.

Considering my first round was unbroken and completed under 2 minutes, this was a terrible time. ALL my time was spent on muscle-ups from rounds 3-5. I had so many failed attempts. Something about the SDHPs completely ruined my ability to pull myself over into the transition. A good chunk of my time was wasted just waiting for the ability to do a MU to return. Very disappointed, i know i can do better.

I'm in the hotel gym in San Fran, so had to modify:
5 rounds of:
21 pullups (on the bar of a Smith machine)
21 dips
21 SDHPs -- 70 lbs. total weight on a curl bar
Time: 23:11
Pullups were nasty hard - the bar on the Smith machine was too low for me to really kip on these, so after round 1, it was mostly 4's and 3's with some singles at the end. Dips were also challenging, but close to normal for bar dips. SDHPs - I got excited with having a real barbell (even if only a curl bar), but it only had 25's on it, so it was a tradeoff vs. dumbbells.
Today was tough as I had minimal time before the conference reception this evening, just glad to get this one done.

95 pound Sumo-deadlift high-pull, 21 reps x 5 rounds
21 dips x 5 rounds
21 pullups x 5 rounds
~33:25(not including the mile) - this accounts for having to walk across the gym and start pullups once the Sumos and dips were done. If I did it any other way at the gym I would have lost the bar. Pullups were done on their own.
14:49 as Rx. Rocked the muscle ups... knew the sumo's would be y weak point but still did alright on them. RIP Tyler.

This seemed pretty easy on the dips/high-pulls, but, again, I cannot do more than 8 pull-ups at a clip. Pull-ups always seem to be holding me back.
RIP Lt. Tyler. As a police officer, I think of soldiers as my brothers.
Eternal rest grant unto him, O Lord, and let perpetual light shine upon him. May his soul and the souls of all the faithful departed, through the mercy of God, rest in peace.

It hurt, I was slow. I actually tried gaming this one instead of going all out, no verdict on that yet, all signs currently pointing to no. Also my last round I went from doing the straight dip bars to doing ring dips because some clowns were over on the dip bars, probably better for me anyway

I am the mother of 1st Lt Tyler Parten. Though I've worked out most my life, Tyler introduced me to crossfit two years ago. When he would come home for a visit he would put me through a workout til I was almost sick. I would time him through his and stand in amazement at the way he could push himself. When he went to Afganhastan, he trained his platoon on the side of the mountains with crossfit. At the time of his death he was lean and ripped. Thank you for honoring him in this way. He would be so proud! Esp. with the muscle ups.
We have lost so many, so fast from 4-4 in the last few months. I know that 1Lt. Parten will strengthen the resolve and determination of his fellow fire breathers in 3-61, 1-12, 2-12, 2-77, and the COLT's. With his sacrifice, will further rid the region of hatred, greed and ignorance. RIP 1Lt. Parten and in peace we all shall find you
