today i was unable to do the WOD due to school related projects and work. I was feeling a little bummed but once i got to work, which is a campus indoor pool, i saw that there was a delievery of 60 bags of pool chemicals each weighing 50lbs. I told my boss i wanted to put the bags away alone but he needed to time me. So, today's WOD ended up being to squat to shoulder carry 60 bags weighing 50lbs each 100 ft for time.

-16:31 not bad for missing the posted WOD

Okay, so Coach talks about Narrative, Data, and Method. So here it goes:

Data: 6 months doing CrossFit, lost 10 pounds, reduced body fat from 23% to 16%, went to the doctor today for my 6 month cholesterol test--overall cholesterol down 50 points, HDL up 14 points, LDL down points, Triglycerides down 90 points (taking Tricor for this, but the doctor said for the first time in 5 years that since I seem to have shown a considerable "lifestyle change" we could try getting off the meds).

Method:
Mainsite CrossFit WOD.

Narrative: My doctor comes in with my results and says "Well, we got some numbers here for you...and you are a new man...now the question is how did you do it?!?!"

Re: the Cliffhanger article - Just as Crossfitters are the kinds of people who take charge of their health, consumers of mass media are taking control of their entertainment options by utilizing technology to its highest purpose. The producers who respect audiences by supplying well-told stories will benefit while the hucksters drown on their own hype. When a Hollywood treasure or a turkey is released into the world, all it takes is one screening for Tweeters across the land to spread the word to save your money or to get down to the box office with your wallets. Big weekend$ for garbage are over. The audience is a lot smarter than the decision makers give them credit for. 3-D, CGI, HD sound, name directors and highly paid movie "stars" won't save the business. Great stories told well will.

Comment #11 - Posted by: Tim R at October 9, 2009 7:14 PM

Now that is cool news Jor! CrossFit works.

Hello Crossfitters!!

Much has transpired in the months I have been absent from the site. I am fortunate enough to have since found an affiliate in Toronto and a group of amazing individuals who inspire me every minute of my life! Thank you for supporting me through my transition and for listening when I wrote - you make a difference just by being in the world each day, encouraging the team and the people in your immediate lives.

In two weeks I am flying out to Ramona California to attend the crossfit kids certification. I am excited yet anxious, having never been abroad on my own. Also, the trip and cert are expensive and I could use some help:

I will be eternally grateful to anyone who lives in Ramona or very close by who is willing and able to host me for the weekend of the 23-25 of October. I realize I am a stranger insofar as face-to-face meetings go however, a friend in terms of crossfit. I am really just looking for a place to sleep and kind people to hang out with during the few hours I am out of class. Please contact me at 647.984.1003 or jenniferaegraham@gmail.com if you are able to help in any way. I am a wonderful house guest, able to help cook, clean, anything!!

Regardless, you have all been pivotal in making me who I am today - thank goodness for all of you.

Feedback is essential to growth and you give the best!

Take care and please contact me if you might help with the travel plans!!

Luv Jen

I have decided to

If all of Hollyweird completely crashed financially, it would not break my heart one bit. The film industry in America has become a dark pool of immorality and filth. There is very little that is good that comes out of that place.

Comment #17 - Posted by: Greg/M2 at October 9, 2009 8:15 PM

Wow, something worth reading on Pajamas Media. The comments on the article are hilariously off topic though - everything from "send money to Sarah Palin", to "watch more war movies," to "unions suck."

People still go to the movies?

"This extra terrestrial comes from outerspace, from some god-for-saken anti-matter galaxy millions and millions of light years from earth."

Pure gold.

As far as the trade schools go (whoops, I mean universities) they are facing a challenge. Will they stay in the business of providing qualifications, or focus on providing educations? Can they do both? I think the answer to the second question is "yes" because they have. But, prospective tuition-payers should consider what they want out of their university education/training? Do they want a job (a very legitimate question)? Do they want "an education" (however they define that now)? If they can get training for a job online or in some web-mediated format for less money and more conveniently then why wouldn't they do it? There are reasons why they, or an average 17-18 would not. I think there will always be a market for the seminar, the real-time discussion, the eye-ball to eye-ball voice-inflected contact between teacher and student (trainer and athlete?). Not everyone needs it, not everyone wants it, not everyone can afford it, and some subject matters benefit from it less than others.

Why would you pay thousands of dollars for the privilege of sitting in an auditorium to hear one man or woman read a paper to you and several hundred of your fellows? If the web-based technological "revolution" push universities to improve themselves, to move away from mega-lecture credentialising then I say great.

Comment #20 - Posted by: Prole at October 9, 2009 8:47 PM

Also, since we're on to movies, I like the photo, where's Etta Place?

Comment #21 - Posted by: Prole at October 9, 2009 9:05 PM

If universities produce more effective employees (rather than selecting for them), then that effect should be measurable outside of the context of university education. We should not simply assume that it exists.

Why bother with insisting on a diploma at all for any profession? Why not just insist upon the relevant necessary skill sets and/or experience level? Isn't the diploma a relatively weak signal of competence?

A university education may be beneficial for some students and particular fields. I, however, would have learned more effectively and efficiently through my own research and experience.

Under the current model, many university students are buying extraordinarily expensive paper credentials rather than paying for access to a general education or specific skill set.

This model, like all models, will not last forever. I, for one, hope it dies soon.

Coming back from 10 days bronchitis, still coughing.. did some bicycling last week, otherwise nothing much. Any suggestions? Thanks everyone...

Tough to feel sorry for Hollywood. I still love going to the movies but rarely want to watch a movie for a second time anymore....

The great exception this year was the low budget film, The Hurt Locker.

Seen it three times at the theatre and would have gone a fourth but it only played for 3 weeks. If you get the chance, go see this movie on the big screen. I hope this movie wins an oscar or two. I am afraid it will be a long shot...

#27 Shane - Nice comment

Jor - great work

S'more - wow !

The days of going to college to get a piece of paper are nearly over. With the exception of some high priced/well named institutions there is not much difference anymore between hodunk university and backwater college. While employers are still looking for people with degrees where that degree comes from doesn't seem to matter as much anymore.

But colleges play another role too. They give 17-22 year olds a chance to mature. Not too many 17 year olds can jump into the "real" world straight from high school anymore. The maturity level just isn't there. That is a very expensive way to mature. And, of course, if the university doesn't crack down on the "animal house" style behavior then the maturation process may stagnate.

Of course, specific careers such as chemical and bioengineering and a whole slew of others will still require the in-depth background that a specifically designed program will deliver. There are not too many people that could self-study for those areas.

The military does a really good job teaching life skills and trade skills to its new recruits. Someone coming out of the military is usually more mature then someone coming out of a four year college.

As always there are exceptions to everything and everyone.

Comment #27 - Posted by: Pokey at October 10, 2009 4:15 AM

The university problem is replicated at the secondary school level. As a high school principal, am I supposed to provide an opportunity for a well-rounded education? Or, do I provide entry level job training for every possible employer?

To try and achieve the perfect balance of education and training, the best forms of delivery of an education and "real-world" experience need to be used. That means we need to use on-line courses blended with live classrooms and work study programs.

The next problem to overcome is that many parents resent losing the baby sitter of their teen agers. Let's face it, I currently provide their kids two hot meals a day, a safe and secure environment, and adults who care enough about their kids to set and maintain structured boundries in which they can grow, make mistakes, and learn.

Just like CrossFit, a quality education doesn't come easily. But, with a lot of hard work, dedication, and focused discipline to accomplish your goals; the results speak for themselves.

Hey Crossfit family, long time no post! I just want you all to know that I'm still around...just squatting and drinking milk mostly.

I went to to doctor's office yesterday and found out that I've gained 10 lbs in the past 4 weeks! I like to think that it's all muscle, but truth be told, there is a little bit of fat from all that moo juice. Hey Pony, pull my finger:-)

Stay strong and i miss you all...back in two weeks!

Man hugs and bad English to all!

Felt like doing something today

AMRAP 20 min
30 ft Rope Climb, 2 Ascents
20 inch box jump, 20 reps
20 dips
10 pullups
20 pushups

4 rounds + 1 rope climb

Doing this in the mid-afternoon sun of ft Benning was not a particularly great idea...

Tim,

I've thought that the recent spate of turkeys from Hollywood was caused by 1 poor story telling and 2 there complete disconnect from the rest of American society. Movies with America as the villain have done very poorly at the box office.

Pokey,
Animal house style behavior is it's own type of learning. Far be it from me to defend drunken debauchery (but it looks like I must) But lets say a student only wants to go to school to party. The student has specialized in social skills. And who you know is more important than what you know. At least if making money is your primary concern.
