"Angie" is one of my favorites!

She'll have to wait until FGB IV is over though...maybe on Sunday depending on the WOD or on rest day Monday.

Those participating in FGB IV~best wishes for a great time and great numbers.

I'M HOME.... yes I *am* recovering from rhabdo. Just got home, discharged this afternoon. I am resting in bed, and reading up on how to best heal from this.

Laura- "How does someone that possesses excellent physical conditioning as you get this?" Well, to be honest I have a few hunches, but that's all they are. I will get to them. Believe me, no one was more shocked than me.

"Did you over work, poor form, work too fast?" Yes, I over worked, no my form was excellent (Goat was there to witness, but even if he wasn't, I am very strict with CrossFit- and most of my life, which factored into this scenario- so my form was spot-on) No I don't believe I was working too fast, I really was focusing on strict reps. I took many rest breaks.

"Was this caused by GHD sit ups?" The WOD in question was the GHD/back extension.

HOWEVER- I HAD BEEN SICK a few days prior. I had several days of poor sleep AND (I really think this is as important as the infection I was fighting) I was taking a very strong OTC med- which is rare for me I tend to shy away from this stuff- but it was the only thing that worked. MucinexD Maximum Strength: Guaifesnin 1200mg and Pseudo-ephedrine 120mg. I am thinking the med started me off in a dehydrated state, it was working SO well that I convinced myself I was well enough to do this WOD (which I had done before AND I do GHDSU in my CFWU 3 sets) Next, I was still fighting the viral infection.

and finally... I am stubborn. The chance to do a WOD as RXed, the chance to beat a previous time, to PR. Another opportunity to kick my own butt and fall in a heap, a soggy sweaty mess, high on endorphins and full of pride. I have NEVER considered myself an athlete. Here, via CF, I have unearthed strength, physical and mental, beyond comprehension. I usually scale. I do my best not to compare myself to others, though I admit to some envy here and there. I look at FitMom & Laura DeMarco in awe & wonder, as my heroes who inspire me to push, pull, run and row as best I can.

"Wondering if the massive numbers of recent GHD sit ups are worth this risk. I have incorporated 10-15 in my CFWU, to get my body used to the movement. But to try to complete the recent WOD's with the high numbers is almost insane." As I said, I do 30-45 full ROM each WU. I USUALLY scale to BrandX pack. For this one, I did NOT. I am very hard on myself, I was pissed that I had been sick (that sounds so dumb, I know) and ta-dah! here's a WOD that I can do as RXed. Goat told me to stop when the fourth round was done and I said NO, as I grit my teeth. I was so angry with myself. I could not believe how weak I felt and how difficult this WOD was and how often I had to rest. Poor Goat stood there and watched as I punished myself by continuing. (Uh, let's just say I unearthed a couple of issues while I was flat on my back in the hospital and have come to terms with a coupla things :)

I WORKED OUT THE NEXT DAY (saturday) Did back squats, didnt go heavy, focused on form/ depth. Max squat was only 135, very light for me. On Sunday I could barely move at first, but as I moved around some it got better. I spent the day walking around NYC, went to Museum of Natural History with Goat and my daughter.

I WORKED OUT MONDAY- did the SP-PP-PJ WOD- went light, felt strong. Did notice swelling in abdomen, but since I have body image issues, thought I was just seeing things and ignored it. I also taught a yoga class.

I WORKED OUT TUESDAY- taught a spin class. Abdomen now visibly swollen. Pain was nearly gone. Thought I was being a nerd with the body image thing again.

WEDNESDAY MORNING- I measured my waist at work on my lunch hour- it was up almost 5", misshapen, and hard. I called the dr. Immediate directions to go to ER...

my urine was clear, not pink/ tea colored
no nausea, fever, vomiting

Kinda scary, did not think I was susceptible, was under the impression this was just a risk for newbies.

I must say I am overwhelmed by the wonderful thoughts, prayers and well wishes via the main site, e-mail and facebook. You are a wonderful community, I am so proud to be a part of this.

can we break this up, as 20 of each in rounds till we hit 100 of each, or is it 100 of each in order?

I am planning on trying this tomorrow night, going to do FGB workout in morning, even though I did not get signed up for it in time.

Comment #14 - Posted by: neil at September 25, 2009 7:47 PM

I can only do a few pullups consecutively. I'm thinking about going for the "do it to it" plan on this one, which will make my time forever...but it'll help me do more pullups down the road hopefully!

I'm going to scale the pullups down like crazy unless I read at least 10 "do it to it" posts before I get around to this (20 hours). :D

I looked in FAQ because I had the same question.

Answer: "Complete all reps of each exercise before moving to the next."

Strong Lil Pony!

Thanks for posting details of your recent experience with rhabdo and letting everyone know the dangers of intense high-rep GHD situps to even experienced CrossFitters. I wasn't as mentally tough as you were and was happy to complete 3 rounds last Friday. I can still feel a litte soreness right now, which is a whole week later.

I hope that you will get better soon.

For some reason I really don't like Angie. Its not that I find it particuarily hard, quite the opposite actually as my heart rate never really gets up until the squats and even then it is only for a minute or so. I guess I find Angie very boring as far as WODs go. Maybe I will do FGB tomorrow instead. We'll see come morning.

#9 Pony,
Yeouch, thanks for the info. Did you get a blood test? Specifically a CK (Creatine Kinase) reading? Normally CK is around 200-400. The CK reading can be used for diagnosing rhabdo - it will climb to 10,000 ++ in rhabdo cases. Alcohol and drugs make the body more susceptible to rhabdo - especially if the drugs increase pain tolerance.
That you took pseudoephedrine AND had your symptoms (even without dark urine) is pretty scary to me.
Normally the body works pretty well to get rid of the cellular by-products of work - shed muscle fibre, lactic acid etc and can balance the electrolytes thus keeping the cardiac system working.
In rhabdo, the shed muscle fibre and cell contents (myoglobin) kill the kidney cells which effects the electrolyte balance, which in turn effects the heart rate.
Pseudoephedrine directly effects the heart rate also.
Dehydration compounds the effects as the body has insufficient fluid to flush the kidneys.
Consecutive workouts compound the effect.
You probably know all this by now.
I hope you are recovering well.
Keep your fluid intake up - water and electrolyte drinks.
Give yourself a lot of rest.
If I did that to myself(I have in the past but not THAT bad), I would be interested in seeing a blood test including CK readings every 3 to 5 days for the next 4 weeks.
If you could keep us posted please that would be appreciated.
I'd also be interested in knowing if anyone else out there has had that very warm and somewhat swollen feeling in their abdomen after doing GHD situps or other ab workouts.
See your Doctor for medical advice.
Take care

So when Dr. Sears talks about having something like a 60/40 carb protein shake post workout(or say 55/45 or whatever fits) what kind of carbs are we talking about here? Veggies? Fruit? Maltodextrin? And should we have a meal when we "return to normal life" after 2 hours from the workout?

Question - I know some of you guys are most certainly ripped individuals, but posting times of 11min 14sec is making me think that there is some kipping / jumping pull-ups going on here, or something of that nature.... Let me know, cause I know I can't be sucking that bad. I usually get 15-18 pull-ups in my first set, 12-14 in the second... but on these I was deliberately trying to make every rep legit (though many weren't great).

strong lil pony,

Glad to here you are home and on your way to recovery. It was not my intention to front you on your exercise performance. I was just trying to understand how this occurred and how I can prevent it from happening to me. I, like you, am very competitive. I see a WOD and think I can do that. I see posts of great times or extra ordinary weights and think, I can match that. I get so consumed in my weights or my times that I will sacrifice quality for time or quantity. I have to pause and regroup. I must take an extra 15 or 30 seconds and do the WOD right. I too, thought this was a newbe condition. You have educated me and I hope others. Thanks for the explaination.

And "joh h" thanks for your input. It all helps.

I am confused...

I have been doing crossfit for about 3 months now, and I love it. But i have seen a lot of discussion about whether to do kipping or strict pull ups when the WOD of the day just says "Pull ups." I have been doing strict pull ups, hence a bit longer to do the WOD.

So, which should I do? Like today I did strict. When it says kipping specifically, i do those. So..whats the final word?

Kipping pus works alot more muscles then strict pus. It activates the hip flexors making you better at cleans, squats, snatches, etc. We train the hip flexros in almost every workout in crossfit.

Rare first thing in the morning WOD for me (usually evening). Body doesn't like when I do that! Lost most of my time on the pull-ups.

Today is my 600th WOD w/o taking more than the Rx'd rest day.

I hope you feel better Strong Lil Pony, thanks for sharing your story and all of the info on Rhabdo.

I was wondering if it is just me or do others get throbbing headaches from doing full range GHD sit-ups. I figure it must be all the swinging. Does anyone else experience this?

Good luck with FGB today. I will be fighting along with everyone else when I head over to the gym in an hour or so.

Man am I drained from yesterday and the last WOD cycle. Adds pretty sore from the GHDs. Perhaps I'm hitting the month 2 wall.

Scaled to Pack 50 ea. Had to jump assist the last 30 pull-ups.

18:15

Question: I have some soreness in my forearm around where the muscle connects near the elbow. It is really sore for the first few pull-ups then goes away as I get through some reps. Could this be tendinitis from all the pull-ups I've been doing the past 6 weeks? I noticed it after the weighted max pull-up WOD about a month ago.

Any suggestions for treatment or just work through it?

Thanks

As a former Soldier, who now works as a civilian instructor on Ft. Leonard Wood, I have benefitted from the Operation Phoenix donation and the Marine Corps Detachment's hard work in setting up the equipment in Cunningham and the Clamshell. I have been Crossfitting for nearly three years now, and it has always been on my own and with equipment that either I bought, or is regular gym equipment that is not intended for Crossfit.

Having the ability to use the equipment is amazing. What is more amazing is having the community start to build at FLW. Between the Detachment Marines, some of the guys I work with, and other Soldiers and civilians on post, quite a decent community is being built here.

Again, thanks to Operation Phoenix, the Marines of the Ozarks, and Crossfit.

Strong Lil Pony - I am so sorry you have been under the weather, to put it mildly! I pray for a speedy recovery for you and all the best! I haven't been good about posting on here lately, but I am still doing the wod's and they are still kicking my @$$ - :) wouldn't have it any other way.
Did Angie today - took way to long on the pull ups but I finished it. Done in 20:58 - not a good time but I felt the hands rip at the 20 pull up and knew I was in for a long haul. Oh well - just happy to get it done and do it right.
I am sooo happy to see Fort Wood on here - I am a missouri resident too and it does my heart good to see more of our "homies" going to the CrossFit lifestyle!
Thanks Coach! Have a wonderful weekend!

#40 and #65-
Kipping pullups unless otherwise specified. Aside from the reasons everyone else has mentioned, kipping allows for a higher power output.
W=FxD
F is your weight (lbs)
D is vertical displacement (how high you lift your center of gravity)
The work performed for each rep (in ft-lbs) is the same whether it's dead hang or kipping, so kipping isn't cheating.
However...
P=W/t
If kipping allows you to do more work (i.e. more reps) in less time, then your average power output is higher. Not to mention the difference in peak power output between an explosive kipping pullup and a controlled strict pullup...sorta like the difference between a step up and a box jump. A step up produces the same amount of work as a box jump (again, W=FxD) but the peak power output is no comparison.

Took me a long time, but I can only improve!

Pull-ups were unassisted, sit-ups were unanchored butterfly style, Squats were down to a wall Ball.
Times are my splits at completion of each:

PullUp 28:36
PushUp 36:59
SitUp 43:24
Squat 48:36

Total time was 48:36, so it took my 20 minutes exactly to do everything after the Pullups. I was proud of myself for not grabbing a band to assist or getting on the Gravitron!

Not a big PR, but I know my push-ups looked a lot better this time, and my pull-ups were about 45 seconds faster (finished them in under 7 minutes). Oh, and again, I’m 10 pounds heavier than last time, so I’m happy with my performance today.

Going backwards in pullups. Have been in PT for elbows for 3 weeks - not helping. Less pain, but less strength too. Almost time to try something else. :(

Good luck to everyone in FGB today! And safe recovery to you, Pony. Thanks for sharing your story and thanks for recogniing it in yourself in time to get better!

Horrible time but I wanted to finish. I was yawning and yawning before wod. Late to bed last night and worked pretty hard before wod. At rep 30 time was 12:16, over PR. Decided to keep going for the 50 rep. Time slowed drastically. Had the shakes and felt little light headed after about 35 reps. Slowed down to singles. Decided not to go at 100%, just to try this wod. Kinda cool wod ;)

It's been a long time since I have posted on here because I've had to stop crossfitting for awhile do to a back injury from DL's. I decided to stop so that I could try to let my back heal. Well it hasn't healed so I went to the dr. this week and had an mri done. It came back as a disk protrusion/herniation. I'm going back to the dr. this week to see what my options are. Do any of you have any ideas or advice as to what is going to happen? What should I expect from this. My biggest worry is that I won't be able to come back from this. Advice please!!

Had to listen to my body today.

Yesterday, immediately after doing a set of max reps pull ups for a little friendly competition with my 145 lb friend, which I won stopping at 22, I developed a nasty migraine-ish headache in my temples and lower skull/upper neck. No specific clue as to what started it, but it came back with a vengeance 20 pull ups into Angie today, so I had to call it quits. Going to take a couple days off and see how I feel. DEFINITELY coming back to Angie though.

Happy with this! Hard, didn't feel good, think I'm dehydrated and possibly a bit of over training.
Did this on metcon day of CFSB.
Pullups 30-then 10s (try for 40 then 10s)
Pushups 20 then 10s and some 5s
Situps 40 then finished in sets of 20/15
Squats 25 then pushed through with small breaks.
Everything went well but next time will have to take shorter breaks and try to push a little more reps. Sub 18 next time!

I get the same thing, those headaches are brutal..I think they are called exertion headaches. One thing that I do combat them is ease into a workout out gradually increasing warm up intensity as i go through a session. Then if it starts i ease off...listening to your body can help alot. Bayer also works quite well. Good luck, and go Air Force ;)

I applaud everyone connected with Operation Phoenix; your efforts are commendatory.
It is unfortunate, however, that the USMC is in a position of relying on charity in order to field functional physical training equipment to Marines. It appears that this situation is the result of two primary causes. First, the USMC has become unresponsive to the physical fitness needs of modern Marines and has opted to shift focus away from effective everyday training methods and instead develop the CFT as an answer to combat fitness requirements. Second, the MWR system which controls gym/recreation facilities on bases is more concerned with providing a service to all members of military bases (families, employees, military members, etc) and is thus not prepared to provide and support the needs of today's Crossfit oriented Marine.
Senior members of the USMC should remedy this problem and ensure that Marine's do not have to rely on the generosity and initiative of well-intentioned civilians to provide equipment to a tax-payer funded military service.

Thanks Cam.

I'll try the Bayer Aspirin for sure. I took a few Tylenols, but they don't seem to help much. I'm going to ease into my warm ups next WOD I hit.

It was strange how it came about. I've been plenty hydrated and got a lot of sleep last night (night prior to first occurrence I hadn't...) and I can't shake it. The last week's WODs went great, felt strong and fit. I guess I am human after all ;)

Go Navy!

The last few months my hands have been a mess after any long pullup workout. At a cert, our trainer saw someone using gymnastic grips. You can buy them online for $10 at http://www.gymsupply.com/index.asp?PageAction=VIEWCATS&Category=57. Beginner Grip with Hook & Loop wrist closure. The grips have been a handsaver and let me focus on technique instead of tearing hands.

Warmed up with some selective stretching and some ball cleans. Then I turned to the wod:

Pull Ups, Kipping, 100 reps (25-15-10-5-5-5-5-5-5-5-5), 6:42
Push Ups, 100 reps (60-20-10-10), 2:23
Sit Ups, 100 reps (60-15-10-5-5-5), 2:52
Squats, 100 reps (60-20-10-10), 2:29
14:25

Way slower than my PR of 12:43 on 081225. Pull ups slowed me down tonight (6:42 versus 5:23 on 081225). Form on pull ups was not good, either. Not getting locked out on the bottom for all reps. Need to keep working on my pull ups - this is where my opportunity is for improvement on this wod.

It works great. It's just cheap wilson grip from target, about $2.50 for 3 peices and has lasted a couple of months. I've tried a lot of things and this is the best so far.

As rx'd, regular situps. 17:38 (PR).

Have been waiting for Angie to come up again! Previous attempts were both 25 minutes and change. Some of this improvement is real, but some is due to kipping - also, both previous Angies were done in Salt Lake, so altitude could have been a factor as well.

I was shooting for sub-20, thought I had a chance at sub-18. Splits were:

pull-ups (~5:30) -- big improvement vs. last time
push-ups (~5:30) -- happy with the effort, but about the same as previous
sit-ups (~4:30) -- a little faster than last time, I was gassed during these
squats (~2:00) -- about the same as previous, was happy I could push thru these

Done after bench press practice for the Raw World PL competition:

13:02

50 consecutive kipping chin over bar pullups followed by sets of fives with quick recovery breaks. The set of 50 killed my grip for the later sets.

Pushups had many breaks....tired after bench pressing.

Anchored situps. Thumbs on chest for all reps.

Squats with no Dynamax ball. Below parallel with full hip extension.

I hit my stopwatch on again sometime between the gym and home but I am pretty sure it was 34 something. Did a mix of kip, jumping and reverse grip pullups. situps were a killer after yesterday's ghd's. Hopefully faster next time but i did have to wait sometimes for the pullup bar.

Okay, one word. "OUCH"!

I scaled this workout down to 50 of each. However once I started I found out just how sore I actually am. Here is the stats:

Pullups: 4 (I had no power or strength at all)
Pushups: 50
Situps: 30 (I hit failure at 30 and couldn't go any further)
Squats: 50

Unreal. I envy the rest of you. I can't wait to get to your level. Although this is very painful to get started in I am really enjoying it.

First Angie - pull-ups are killer - still working on kipping (though, this gave me a lot of practice!!!) so these were largely dead hang and kipping attempts. 27:36. Pull-ups and sit-ups killed me - day before was my first ever GHDs - took some advice and only did 50 of those - the other 100 were all regular sit-ups - but my abs were smoked before I even started. Blew through the push-ups in 6 sets and in under 3 minutes - and the squats didn't take long. Pull-ups were just over 14 minutes and the sit-ups took me a while. Two days later my biceps are still crying.

At least I have something to push to beat for next time!

Did 10 pull ups every 30 seconds. Strategy worked well until 80, at which point I just did sets of 5 (or 3... or 2) as soon as I could.

70, 20, 5, 5 for push ups
100 sit ups and 100 squats.

Squats were hard, made me nauseous going up and down... still sore from the max rep back squats from a few days back.

Pull up form sucked! had to sub lying heaves by halfway!

Still recovering from a broken foot so I wimped out and went 10 cycles of 10 each exercise and hobbled 50m in a square to "station"

31degrees celcius and humidity here helps with the sweat!

this was only my 5th time doing the routine posted, that being the case I finished in what I think a respectable time of right under 45 minutes.

Should I be doing all of the pull ups first then moving on to push ups or can I cycle 20 at a time?

I don't know where it came from. I felt normal today, but crushed my last time by over 2 minutes. I did split my chin open and chip two teeth by impacting the bar on the way up with a kip. Crossfit always keeps it interesting.
