saweet! going for all under 1:55.
Great WOD to end the week.
my vest is still sweaty and damp from pulls, jumps ,lunges on wednesday.Cant wait!!!
No here WOD on 9/11?!? Seems wrong to me...
thought for sure it would mimic last year on this date: "Pick a hero".
To those that protect my freedom every day~ thank you.
I'm pretty new to this(started two weeks ago, working into it), what is an average time for this WOD?
I am perplexed with this one. NO HERO WOD???
@ 2
under 1:55? lol, is that humanly possible? less than a second per reps plus switching?
Would it be bad to try this with GHD situps?
Who's to say Barbara isn't a hero? How many first responders has she trained or inspired and therefore kept out of harm's way? How many lives have been saved because soldiers, sailors, cops and firefighters knew Barbara? If she's one of the Crossfit OG girls - she's a hero in my book.
Thanks to Nick in Sydney and Buretto for the advise on getting ready for my early am wod's. We'll se how tomorrow morning's Barbara conmpares to the last one.
Hard to believe it was eight years ago...
My PR was about 17 minutes...That's without rest.
Let me see if I can beat that..
Looking forward to doing this in the AM, gonna scale to pack level:
10 PU
20 pu
30 su
40 sq
oooh those pull ups are getting so close.. :)
Awwwwww, yeah, I love bodyweight WOD's like this!
#10
pullups are the only exercise where I cant get under 1 second per rep, even with butterfly. switching takes less than 1 second. pushups is where I make up all the time haha
Good luck guys and gals!
I am thinking a little vest action will be in order for this one.
From comment #9 to comment #12.
VERY GOOD POINT!

#22 Kevin - it was a great question to raise. Nothing quite like 9/11 to get us all thinking. Glad to be able to participate in the conversation... Lots of our compadres can't. I remember too, which makes me appreciate Barbara (and Crossfit) all the more :D
sorry, it should read for all those passed*
My thoughts and prayers go out to the firefighters putting their lives on the line to save lives and property in California. Be safe.
Have Fun, Train Hard,

For some reason, Barbara always makes me sick to my stomach. I think its the sit-ups followed by squats that do it. This is one of those WODs that I always have to pace back and forth a little to work my brin into it before I begin.
Have Fun, Train Hard,

A friend of mine is doing the "Never Forget":
2992 reps of the following exercises:
Pushup
Situp
Pullup
Squat
DB swing
DB snatch
Box jump
Double-unders
Wall ball shots
Ball slams
Don't know who first posted it, but it will faithfully be completed.
NEVER FORGET
Note on previous post:
Supposed to be completed by a five man team, and was posted by CrossFit Front Range.
This is going to be ruff, I love this though.
AHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHH, going to the gym right now to do this. Oh boy its going to be fun!
I really hate to say this, because i myself hate the "haters" that bash good, hard work...BUT i think doing this WOD 1:55 per round is unlikly, i would like to see the form, expecialy with the squats.....
God Bless the men and women who fight...
Eveyone enjoy the WOD!

I am VERY disappointed today's WOD is not a "choose a hero WOD; post hero WOD chosen and time/rounds to comments" Crossfit had a great opportunity to remember 9/11 by celebrating crossfit heroes who have died in the service of fellow Americans. Instead Crossfit gives us Barbara. Truly a missed opportunity.
If you wanna do a HERO WOD, Do a HERO WOD. There is a training plan in place. I'm sure if one of them would have fit with what coach wanted they would have thrown it in there. Get over it. Post your scores and move on.
I do appreciate the patriotic notions, I am in Iraq, serving, but let it go. It's anoying, and it takes away from what this site is for, working out, compairing tips, and getting help. If you wanna cry about it start a blog.
#40 dandny
p.s. - go to gym jones then I'm sure they will have a great free website that you can pick any workout you want on 9-11. oh yeah I forgot they dont. darn it. guess you're stuck with the best free website that I have ever come across. BUMMER for you.
Thank you to all the soldiers firefighters and law enforcement we are so greatful to have. America has truly the finest of each.
It is hard to believe that eight years have passed since the ill-fated attacks on the Twin Towers in New York City. Today, we shall keep in our thoughts and prayers those who have fallen in the line of duty - those who have given their lives for the greater good. The freedom and safety that we enjoy would be lost if not for the continued persistence and sacrifice of our heroes. God bless them.
Note: the WOD is just that, a suggested workout. On any given day, one may substitute another workout for the day; today is no different. If you feel so obliged to perform one of the many hero workouts, please do so.
Yes, scientifically speaking, the Earth takes 365 days to orbit the sun. And yes, that's happened 8 times since the world as we know it changed forever. Why does it take a date to have to pay respects to the sacrificed? You should be doing that everyday.
As for Barbara from Afghanistan:
3:32*, 4:13, 4:33, 4:45, 4:49 = 34:12
*1st full set of 20 pull-ups in a row for me
Love the picture. Can you say crossfit 12 hours on 12 hours off for as many days as it takes to control the fire. Nice job guys. Stay safe.

9/11 musings (originally posted 9/11/08)...
The men and women who served and died on 9/11, and those who have served and died since in the efforts to keep each one of us safe, did and do so such that we in America may continue to live our lives in freedom. Our regular, every day lives, the ones we make our way through every regular day. Whether they be or were LEO, Firefighters, or in our Armed Services, each of them did and does go to work wherever they find themselves, doing a dangerous, some times life-threatening job, so that I may go about my day with that many fewer fears, with that many fewer dangers to personally confront. Having met so many more of you who do this these last 3 years only serves to increase my awareness and appreciation.
So what will I do today, September 11 2008? Well, I already spent a moment in silence in memory and in mourning for the civilians who lost their lives on September 11, 2001. People just like you and me, going about a regular day doing their regular things living a regular life. I reflected, and continue to reflect as I head to the office, that none among us who spends even a minute in reflection on September 11 is able to consider the life they live as regular in the same way any longer.
And so for the rest of today I will think, in each moment of my regular day, that my ability to have a regular day, today, September 11, is due in no small part to the jobs done by those who served and died on September 11, and by those who serve knowing that they may die in that service to this day. I will honor their service and their sacrifices by doing the very best that I can in the progress of my regular day, because that is what they hope for me and for each of you.
Each of us, living a regular day, free, means that each LEO, each Firefighter, and each person in the Armed Forces successfully completed their mission today.
And won.

God bless all in Afghanistan and all those involved with bringing down Al Qaeda.
I'm a little worried about Barbara tomorrow but I'm profoundly grateful for those who protect my freedom enough to allow Barbara to be my biggest concern
I just wanted to say thank you to all the service members on this forum, Military, Police and Fire.
Also, Barbara always kicks my butt. It's the rest that is the killer part.

Good morning! Hey, I've got a question I'm hoping one of you can answer. Are we to do a certain type of "sit-up?" I didn't notice any demos on the exercise link.

I use to post daily. Stopped because I found posting on my home gym's CF site worked better for me. Anyway, I came back to the main site today in honor of 9-11 and to get motivated by the photo, the WOD and people's comments on the board. To say I'm shocked by no Hero WOD or no 9-11 dedication WOD and the lack of a remeberance photo is an understatement. What are were the administrators thinking ? I'm Cert 1, pay for the CF journal, religiously do a WOD a day....drink the coolade etc. I want an explanation and a 9-12 redemption WOD/Photo to honor 9-11.
RIP all who perished 8 years ago today, the Flight Crews, pax & other innocents.

Eight years ago today,
I was a rookie with about 1 1/2 years on. I had just finished a midnight shift and was getting ready for bed around 8:30 a.m. As I was about to turn off the t.v. I saw the indescribable. I immediately ran down the street and watched the skyline that I had seen my entire life crumble to the ground.
I will never forget that day, or the following weeks horror. God Bless America!
since when do you need crossfit to tell you how to remember a day of tragedy/mourning...?
for those of you bitching up and down the comment board, if you don't wanna do the WOD, do a hero workout. it's that simple.
if you're gonna act all butthurt about it, keep it to yourself.
the site provides you a valuable service day after day and all you people do on a day like today is bitch that you didn't get what you want...?
when do we ever get a workout that we really WANT to do..? you think i liked doing wed's workout? not really but i kept my mouth shut, my hands away from my keyboard, and banged that sucker out.
quit your bitching people. apologies for the novel but man, i've never seen so much whining from crossfitters before...

I'm still at pack level and the CFWU takes me 12-15 mins by itself. Should I be modding the warmup before a wod like this to go easier on pullups/situps/dips(pushups)?
All of you bitching about this awesome free service not posting a hero wod ,please stop now. There is no contract locking you into "barbara"if you wanna do a hero wod,do one, hell do two.
Coach and the crossfit team have always kept our police/fire/and military in the forefront of this site.Im sure it wasnt a slight to this dark day in our history.Im sure no one would mind if you did the "hero"of your choice and posted it.Many a hero has crossfit made.God bless all the protectors of our freedoms, foreign and domestic.

Another nemesis of mine…bodyweight workouts are my greatest weakness. Important note; again, I am 10 pounds heavier than the last time I did this workout, so I am pleased I was able to shave some time off, despite (or because of?) the extra weight.

TOTAL = 23:09 PR (39 seconds less than last time)
First two rounds of pull-ups unbroken; push-ups were challenging after the first round because of lingering soreness from push jerks. Anchored AbMat sit-ups per my usual.
Very suprised at the low blows here, you guys are chastizing an organization that for nearly the same eight years has relentlessly and in the face of continuous opposition taught, trained and tirelessly tested the boundaries of human performance almost exclusively for the good of the men and women who serve...FOR FREE... crossfit shouldn't have to tell you to remember a guy who died defending your freedom or a guy who died protecting the populace at large or even a pissed off American on flight 93 who said to himself I am not going to stand by and take this, if I'm going down it's going to be with a fight. That is what Crossfit represents everyday, when most organizations and groups come out and say never forget they mean try not to forget for the rest of the day, Crossfit reminds me three out of every four days that we all must remain vigilant not only in our rememberance but in our own preparation against all enemies foreign and domestic... GOD BLESS AMERICA and Semper Fi.

this comment was so true and made me laugh pretty hard
This workout looks promising for a great start to the weekend
God bless all those who have given their all and more for this country!
Hello everyone, I have been gone a couple of weeks. I took a nice long vacation. I confidently and with a sense of complete comfort got on a plane with my family and flew off to a distant land, where I had a perfectly wonderful time, and then flew back again last night.
Yes, safety, civil order, and economic opportunity are great things. For the presence of those things in my life I owe a giant debt to all of the many people posting on this site who risk their lives every day in military service, law enforcement, and firefighting. This is one of those days when saying thank you seems incredibly inadequate, but thank you for your service, everyone.
When I think about 8 years, I think about 8 years without another major attack in the US. That is phonomenal, probably not what anyone would have predicted back in those dark days after 9/11. Honor is due to all the people who contributed in so many different ways to make that happen. In itself, that is a major victory over the bad guys.
I was able to swim a lot on this trip, but did nothing else. I hope that means I am rested and recharged, not de-conditioned and fat, and that I can get a new PR 800m swim next week sometime. Guess we'll see. I might only last a few rounds with Barbara today. I am really looking forward to getting back into this and visiting this site every day. I missed you guys and it's good to be back.

Just completed it on my first day back to Crossfit due to injury and illness. Took me 35mins!
By the way, was it posted anywhere that Erin Cafaro won two gold medals in the recently-concluded rowing World Championships (in the 8+ and 2-)? Double golds are incredibly rare in the rowing world, and Erin joins only a handful of elite rowers in history who have ever accomplished this. Great job Erin!!!
6 out of 10 members that conducted the 911 commission report believe that our government is covering up evidence about 911. it took 411 days for our government to investigate 911 only after pressure from the victims families(the jersey girls)
and they become disillusioned when over 80 percent of there questions weren't answered. i think we owe it to the families and service men and women that have lost there lives to have a real investigation. being a crossfitter lets you see outside of the box when it comes to what you have been told about fitness and I hope that in this group of forward thinkers that you won't just believe what you have been told about 911. Remember "those who sacrifice liberty for security will end up with neither liberty or security"
i do agree with you about the fact of being a crossfitter makes you think outside the box, but to think that the government would kill 3,000 innocent lives its truly disgraceful. you sir are unamerican, how about just be thankful someone you know didnt die, and maybe if you have some decency you will say a prayer for those who did lose someone instead of tarnishing them with a bullsh*t conspiracy.

Just realized I took no rests. My time was a straight through time.
Rx'd, 35:20. First round was 2:55 (unbroken), but the wheels came off the cart pretty shortly thereafter.
One thing I have noticed is that while my pullups, pushups, and squats take 1 sec/rep or less (maybe a *touch* more for the pullups, but not much), my situps are averaging around 2 sec/rep. Yeah, i was unanchored, but i don't think it would make THAT much of a difference!
Any tips to speeding up situps? I've got no problem with just doing them, but was wondering if there were additional exercises I could work on to increase the fast-fire nature of my abs.
As for 9/11, I would tend to quote LTC Grossman, but I imagine everyone here has heard the bit about the sheep, sheepdogs, and wolves. Stay vigilant, everyone; though it's better to know what you're up against than be in the dark, it doesn't mean you don't still have to go and defeat the threat.

Not new to working out but new to crossfit as of last week. Thanks for such a fantastic free site. So sore I can hardly move!
I'm enjoying learning about this new way of training :)
I'll visit Barbara on Sat. but like other CrossFit folks 9-11 is a different day for me. I'm certainly happy for my freedom, my health, and this community. How (or if) people reflect today or any other day is up to them. Sure CrossFit publishes WODs and results but if that is all that you are taking and never adding or participating in the FRAT then you are missing out on something special. Whether you wear a uniform or not we can all "serve" to support others. The mental and physical benefits we gain from CrossFit can help in amazing ways. Look no further than a story that just happened this morning...
Rescuers lift SUV off injured Framingham second-grader (http://www.boston.com/news/local/breaking_news/2009/09/framigham.html)
“It’s every parent’s worst nightmare, is the classic expression,’’ Shastany said in a telephone interview. “It’s a terrible, terrible tragedy… It appears from the initial investigation that he ran out without looking.’’
He said the SUV was driving at a low speed. The boy was struck and then came to rest underneath the middle of the vehicle. Police officers, Fire Chief Gary Daugherty and at least four area residents then circled the SUV and lifted it up so the child could be freed and given emergency care by paramedics, Shastany said.
Shastany identified the Framingham officers involved as Sgt. Vincent Stuart and Officers Arthur Sistrand and Ed Burman. He said Daugherty focus on removing the child while the officers and civilians lifted the vehicle.
After speaking with the officers, Shastany provided more details of the rescue. He said arriving police and fire immediately tried to shift the car off the boy. But they quickly discovered they did not have enough muscle power to do it, so they asked for help from neighbors who had been respectfully staying out of the public safety officers’ way, he said.
Shastany said once the officers asked for help – “boom, they had more than enough help,’’ Shastany said. “They got the wheels off the ground. They had to pull him out from under. The fire chief focused on removing him while the others went to lift it. When they got it up in the air it was just enough so they could pull him out.’’
Shastany said the incident under investigation by crash reconstruction teams from his department and the State Police. The name of the driver was being withheld pending the outcome of the investigation.
“I’ve heard the stories about adrenaline surge and people lifting cars – but this must have been quite a sight,’’ he said.
Since the rescue, the boy's condition appears to have improved. Shastany said he is in stable condition and is being transferred to a Boston hospital for treatment of chest injuries.

To whom it may concern,
I am a long time CF’er, and understand that CF does not need my defense; but’ I think we need to put things into perspective. Leaving the most Military/Service support community I’ve ever known because of the posted WOD and picture is a bit extreme. Constantly Varied, Functional Movements, done at High Intensity = Crossfit, I think that Barbara meets that definition quite well looking at the past mesocycle. Further, not posting a Hero WOD definitely meets the Constantly Varied portion of the equation, knowing that many of us probably thought it would happen. Now before I go any further-I am in the US Army, and have been in harm’s way supporting OIF/OEF , so this is not coming from someone that is un-patriotic or un-American. This is coming from someone that loves to CrossFit and can step back and look at the big picture. I am appreciative of everything the CF community has done for me and my fellow Service Members. It is true, we have many WOD’s that Honor our fallen Hero’s, and in that case we honor them by completing them with all of the intensity that we can muster. Some perspective here; Honor 11 September with all the intensity that you can muster, and complete Barbara as RX’ed with all the intensity that you can muster and let that be that. If you want to combine the two, when you are in the deep waters of rounds 3-5 go ahead and think about 8 years ago to get through it. Being disheartened because a Hero WOD/picture didn’t come up on Patriot Day is just spoiled. By the way, the posted picture is of Fireman. It doesn’t take an abstract brain to make that connection.

Well spoken Angel. As a volunteer fireman, I think of those who've gone before in the line of duty quite often. It's interesting to see that many of the comments on this board defending the site are those who are serving us now overseas.
The firemen/women fighting on the line out west are in harms way every day and deserve the front page today as well. Remember those who gave lives in the past, but keep in mind that there are many who are risking their lives now - this day.

To address the Hero WOD issue and I say this as a soldier myself: How do you choose a specific Hero WOD? What Hero WOD is worthy of a day like today? My advice, keep them all in your hearts, in your minds, and lay it all on the line regardless of the workout, because no workout will ever truly measure their sacrifice and what they gave. Be glad that you have the limbs, and the breathe to do the workout, and realize after the workout that you get to go home to your family, because I guarantee if any one who has paid the ultimate sacrifice got a chance to come back they would not worry about the fact that they have to do "Barbara" today. PR by 4:09! I didn't have my old times with me, so I knew these were faster, but I wasn't sure how much faster. Pullups unbroken on first 3 rounds (PR!), then 16 on round 4 and 12 on round 5; pushups a weak point as usual, but unbroken thru 2 sets, and was able to get first 15 straight each round. Situps were killing me today, I felt like I was hurling my body upward in later rounds, using any muscles I could to get up (abs, hip flexors, back). Squats were unbroken and felt great (or as good as they can feel during Barbara).
I keep forgetting that Barbara takes a ton out of you. I felt faint from right after the workout until I could get something to eat. Oh, and the other slight bad news is my shoulder got trashed from this - either pullups or pushups or both maybe. I may take an extra rest day on Sunday to try to heal up again.

I'm so sore and beat down from my new sand bag training program that I'm actually happy with getting all the time under 5 minutes and that two are faster thatn before
Only made two rounds and felt glad to get that much. I was encouraged that I am only about 3-4 pounds over my normal weight. And it was great to get back to the gym and find I can still kick up into a handstand and can manage an OHS. Hopefully I will be back to full power next week.
Don't know if anyone posted anywhere that our own Erin Cafaro recently won two gold medals at the rowing World Championships, in the eight and the pair. Double golds in rowing are rare, in fact only a handful of elite rowers in history have ever done this. Congratulations Erin!

Had to use jumping pullups half way thru, couldn't kip because of my homemade powercage pullup bar set up (not enough room). situps were the only movement I could go thru without rest. gotta say i still feel like I haven't recovered from Monday's CFT. The pull-ups killed me. I still don't have the form for kipping and wanted to make sure I got each one right. Otherwise, it would've gone a lot faster.
Now, I'll have a time to shoot for next time around!
Feels good to finish out my second full week of CrossFit.
Possibly the most nauseating workout I've ever done.

Oh, figured out a timer tip today for the rests: you can set your cell phone (mine's a Blackberry) to turn off the screen at a certain time after inactivity. I set that to 3 minutes... that left my watch free for timing the rounds. When I finished a squat, I'd hit the watch, then press anything on the phone and set it down.
Sip some water, walk around, gasp for air, reset the watch... when the phone screen goes blank, its time to go back to work. Worked like a charm.

I wasn't going to comment today, but I just watched World Trade Center, and had one thing to say.
In my understanding Jehovah's Witnesses do not celebrate holidays because every day is supposed to be a holy-day (the root of the word).
Likewise, in some respects 9/11 was unremarkable in that we have always known there were those who meant us ill, and were capable of acting on it.
That awareness should not ebb and flow with the vagaries of political currents, and the talking points of the day.
Fundamental realities change only slowly, and we are not even remotely in a safe world. Only foolishness permits concluding otherwise.
Whatever people are feeling today, I would encourage them to feel tomorrow, and the next day. What we are trying to do in America is lead the way to a world that is more peaceful, just, humane, and good. There are many who oppose us, even within our own nation.
But if we keep the faith, I do believe God will in the end shine on our project, and we will fulfill our destiny as one of many Cities on the Hill.

So bad, even though the first time doing this exercise. Subbed dips for push ups as I did a heavy bench session yesterday. Three rounds as follows:
20 kipping pullups
30 dips
20 GHD situps 20 normal situps

and 10:37
then dropped to

I did the 1st 2 rounds as RX'd to see where I was going to fall time-wise and seeing as I read somewhere that your rounds should be maximum of 4:00, I scaled down for the last 2 rounds (-10 reps for each exercise on the scaling).
push-ups are my hold-up on these bodyweight exercises. They kill me. I'm doing 2-3 at a time to get through it. My pull-ups were OK. I had to break several times on them. However, I did the full 10 reps on the last round unbroken (kipping w/ hands facing me). sit-ups are not my favorite, either. I was able to pretty much breeze through the squats. I'm psyched to keep seeing improvement though! I don't think I could have gotten through 1 set of Barbara if it was my first day as a CF-er.
This culminated my first full week of doing all crossfit workouts. I love the program so far, but am a little worried about how intensely sore I am.

This was a LOT better than I thought I'd do today. my diet has been a bit off lately, this past weekend and I had HORRIBLE sleep the past two nights. I have had bad pain in my wrist from arthritis, bus I wanted to do this WOD... it's always a realy hard workout, and I've been wanting to break 15 minutes.I did the pushups on dumbells so my wrists wouldn't be overly strained.. that was good for my wrists, but HARD on my chest... making my range of motion considerably harder.
I just kept plodding along.. no real rests... that makes a HUGE difference.
As usual.. this was a great WOD.. my legs were soo tired.. they felt like when I squat heavy and I'm still tired.

Heh, my timing got messed up today and I ended up doing 6 rounds instead of five.
Total time for 6 rounds was 46:31
Total time with 3 minute breaks was 41:40
I calculated my total based on the first five rounds.
Breaks 3 x 4 = 12 minutes
Total time of the rounds = 29:40
Average time per round = 29:40/5 = 5:56
That last round was 46:30-41:40 = 4:50
Considering that I really messed up the timing this is an approximation at best.
