Alright! I have been waiting for this WOD since my attending my Olympic Lifting cert the first weekend in August. I can't wait for the morning!

Comment #2 - Posted by: mkr at September 4, 2009 6:54 PM

One of my favorite lifts.

Comment #4 - Posted by: USMA02 at September 4, 2009 7:01 PM

I have been following crossfit for a while. But I still have not idea what 1-1-1-1-1-1 reps means. Help!!

Comment #5 - Posted by: Bruce Benyo at September 4, 2009 7:02 PM

Would anyone care to explain to a NOOB what all the "ones" mean? I've seen them in a bunch of other WOD's but never understood.

Comment #6 - Posted by: Jason K at September 4, 2009 7:02 PM

You are supposed to do 7 sets of 1 rep at max effort.

Comment #7 - Posted by: DerekC at September 4, 2009 7:04 PM

I cannot do clean and jerks due to crippled hands. I am missing severl fingers and cannot control the bar. What is a good sub? Is there anyone person I could exchange emails with that could/would help.

Comment #8 - Posted by: Rod m/57/178/6'2" at September 4, 2009 7:04 PM

@ #7 : so does "max effort" mean the most that one could lift? Thanks.

Comment #9 - Posted by: Jason K at September 4, 2009 7:07 PM

too bad all that crossfitting doesn't help the black knights win any football games... go air force!

Comment #10 - Posted by: zoomie at September 4, 2009 7:08 PM

Thank God!

I have been hoping this WOD would show up for a very long time! This is awesome!.....How am I supposed to sleep now?

Comment #11 - Posted by: KLowe at September 4, 2009 7:11 PM

ROD- you could hold a heavy kettlebell like a ball or a heavy medicine ball. May be way too light to achieve your 1RM but it's the same motion. blast out the reps

Comment #12 - Posted by: Doug S. at September 4, 2009 7:17 PM

Zoomie--How about a little inter-service academy rivalry WOD? Let me know when you field a big enough group. As for football games, we'll see how that turns out for you guys in November. GO ARMY!!!

Comment #13 - Posted by: DB at September 4, 2009 7:18 PM

man college football, clean and jerk at 7 rep max.....I love how this weekend is starting

Comment #14 - Posted by: Kenneth A Hinz at September 4, 2009 7:20 PM

Comment #16 - Posted by: ArmorJoe83 at September 4, 2009 7:28 PM

Hey guys,
I've been working at crossfit for a couple months now, and I've been having a lot of trouble with cleans of all varieties. It's been frustrating because cleans are incorporated into so many workouts, but I've not been able to regain full range of motion since suffering an elbow injury a few years ago.
I can't bend my arm back all the way, and consequently have been straining my shoulders, wrists, and back. I can do snatches and dumbell cleans, although I have not come close to perfecting the technique at those. Does anybody have any recommendations about what I could sub for the cleans in our WODs? Thanks for any help

Comment #17 - Posted by: JR at September 4, 2009 7:49 PM

First time doing crossfit tomorrow. I ave experience with te lifts so I'll see how it goes. Looks like alot of fun

Comment #21 - Posted by: micah sybor 74"/230#/30yrs at September 4, 2009 8:04 PM

The 1-1-1-1-1-1-1 is that for each one you do the most wieght that you can safely do. So you do one at say 150lbs and the up it by 5lbs for each rep you should get to the last two or three and be completely wiped and struggling to finish. The key is to be safe if you haven't done this movment before practice with very very low to no wieght and then do a different work out. If anyone feels that wrong or left anything important out please correct me.

Cheers

I am in the Army and you are right the Army football program comes no where near the Navy. But to say that the Air Force Academy doesn't is pretty stupid. They play in the MWC and have been in the top 25 quite a few times in the last decade. Air Force is no slouch and can hang with Navy any day.

Rob is a beast. I recently went home to Idaho and showed a few of my old friends who are trainers at a "Gold's Gym", and they were completely perplexed that someone could do 100 body weight squats. Then I informed them that he did a wod the very next day! Rob you have all the respect in the world from me. I can't believe how incredibly strong you are. Keep up the good work.

Maybe you can increase the reps and go with a light weight, but still do the same movements. I mean, if you can do a shoulder press, deadlifts etc. Then it comes down to a balance issue, I've seen people do a Clean & Jerk with one hand. So with that being said, you should be able to develop the balance that is required to do it.

Yes it sucks, however even if you have to start at a 15 pound training bar, the skills will develop.

Comment #40 - Posted by: CJRH at September 5, 2009 3:58 AM

Maj Blackmon - Good to see you on the mainsite and your numbers increasing! I had a great time while I was there.. hope someday I can come back.

Still new to crossfit, but I am proud of myself today :)

45-45-45-45-45-45-45 lbs
45-45-45-45-45-45-45
55-55-55-55-55-55-55
65-65-65-65-65-65-65

Still had energy so I also did these:

100 jump rope
20 bench press
20 situps

That must mean I wasn't at max. Didn't want to push it since I'm still relatively new, but I'll be increasing next time!!

Comment #57 - Posted by: Phoenix at September 5, 2009 7:00 AM

kgs:

70, 80, 80, [80f, 80f, 80f, 80f]

Noob 47/75"/212

New to clean and jerk so need tons of work on technique. Given this is new, not sure what my capabilities are so stayed conservative and focused on technique.

95
115
135
145 had to power clean
155 power clean
165 power clean
95 back to full squat clean, focused on technique

Finished with a few sets of heavy benches

Too many years of high rep low weights bodybuilding routines. It's been a long time since I pushed that much weight over my head. Felt great and glad to be back to some heavy lifting. Once I get my technique down I've got lots of upside on this one.

Jerks are never a problem for me (jerk PR is 175); if I can clean it, I can get it up.

Started off with squat cleans to prepare myself for when it got heavy, but kept catching higher with each lift. By the time I hit my PR's, I was catching in a high power clean - stupid!

Tied straps around logs in the yard. Worked my way up to a decent size (for me) log. Right now it's all work on form, rather than strength. But I like the feel of this lift. There is something graceful about it when I get the movement down.

A question for the home crossfitters. How do you pad your garage? I've got some cheap interlocking foam pads on top of concrete floors, but I'm scared of dropping weight on them. What do you use?

Introduced the girlfriend to CrossFit today, used the Viking Fran WOD from a few days ago. Replaced the snatches with thrusters due to gym restrictions, and scaled to puppies:

Row 500m
Thrusters 15 reps
Jumping pull ups 15 reps
Row 350m
Thrusters 12 reps
Jumping pull ups 12 reps
Row 250m
Thrusters 9 reps
Jumping pull ups 9 reps

Wound up spending plenty of time walking from the Erg to the weights, and helping her with assisted pull ups, so I didn't track time. She had a great time though, loved the workout anyway

Set 6: 135* f
Set 7: 95lbs

first four sets were all full squat cleans with push jerk. plus a big difference making the cleans was using a hook grip (thanks Rodney)! the lifts of 135lbs were good powercleans, just not squat cleans. plus i failed to get the jerk on those two efforts. but 3 PRs today: 130lbs C&J/130lbs Squat Clean/135lbs Power Clean.

I leave for my Basic Military Officer Qualifications at 09:30 tomorrow morning with 100% confidence. Crossfit has been an enabler for me with respect to two key factors: 1) I now greatly exceed the BMOQ physical standards; and 2) I've learned how to persevere even when my body is screaming, "Hey idiot, quit before you kill yourself!". Consider this a general statement of thanks to the Crossfit community for facilitating my journey to this new chapter of my life, one that I can't wait to get started.

Ready, Aye, Ready. Can't wait to get back at it in four months!

"The magic is in the movements, not the tools", therefore use whatever technique you can that preserves your joint integrity.

I have a similar limitation in elbow ROM due to old injury, and commonly use the sandbag clean as a sub for barbell cleans. Also, consider breaking the clean and jerk into its individual components and training that way: high pull, front squat, push press. Whatever you choose, always put your safety first and if it hurts in an injurious way don't do it.

Comment #206 - Posted by: Jay M in SC at September 5, 2009 4:29 PM

Well I'm off to fight in the GWOT this week! Thanks to crossfit I am leaner (from 215 to 195) and stronger! This is a way of life!

@ #222 John Lamica

we should examine these more appropriate stats (for the record):

since the creation of the Commander-in-Chief's trophy in 1972,
AF beat Army (26/37) = 70%
AF beat Navy (22/37) = 59%
CiC's trophy awards = AF (16); Navy (11); Army (6)

comparing overall win percentage would imply that the AF, Army, and Navy all play equivalent opponents... which is simply not the case

I just did cleans to build confidence before attempting the jerk. I'm gonna wait for muscle memory to cement a bit more before I try performing two complex new tasks the same day.

made it to 170.

I think I need to work on my front squat as I'm still really just power cleaning. The idea of catching even 135 that deep is horrifying. I can't make myself do it anymore that I could make myself jump off a building. I think my glutes are still just super weak. I'm gonna start hitting some max front squats after WODs and maybe do some drops from standing to practice catching deep.

Took a break (5 min. maybe) and then maxed on pull ups. I got 20! New PR!

Today was my first time with clean and jerks. My form was a little dodgy at first but by rep 6 or 7 I was feeling good about my motions. But by that time I was worn out and didn't want to risk injuring by going up in weight. Figured I'd give myself an easier time in the future to use that muscle memory and set a new C&J PR.

The last 2 reps I used for videoing purposes for critiquing form, so I might have been able to go higher than 145, but didn't want to push it and go away from better form

Comment #336 - Posted by: bsw at September 7, 2009 12:26 PM

Done with PVC to work on form. Probably will do a few with 45# bar tomorrow to keep working on pulling my body under the bar vice pulling bar up. Not going deep at bottom of clean.

Some rest day today!

Comment #372 - Posted by: Josh Sr. at September 8, 2009 2:10 PM

Had a lot of fun on this one as I was mostly working on technique. Question for the community - my gym doesn't have an olympic bar, so I'm left with the choice of loading up the curl bar or doing these with dumbells. I started with the curl bar and did 65-75-85-95-105lb. At this point my wrists start to feel off because I'm holding an angled bar. So then I went to dumbells and did 40-60-80lb. I believe my form is better with the bar.

CFWU-2. Reg. Superman. Burgener. Did at Triangle Crossfit.

135,145,155,165,175,185,195. Didn't even attempt jerk portion on last 2 sets.
Good work on clean portion of lift. Moving bar back instead of straight up. "Feel the steel" when weight gets past knees.

cleans were no problem, took 2 attempts from the rack position on some of the successful jerks, and a lot of press outs.

Wish I had posted my stats the day I did this workout, and I lost the index card where I recorded my info on!

That said, I started at 95 lbs, and worked my way up to 115. Will start posting my WOD stats the day of!

This exercise kills my posterior shoulders, likely teres minor or posterior head of deltoid. Feel like my form is getting better, but still do nit get under the bar fast enough and I am muscling it up a little
